The Frontier would still be my top choice of all the currently available midsize trucks. The value proposition is unbeatable, especially in Pro-4x trim. It's at least $5000 cheaper than the other two in top off-road trim. I also love the fact that it's smaller than the others, which makes it better suited for off-roading and maneuverability. The Frontier is still a great truck and an outstanding value.
They haven't tanked the Frontier because of people like us. "Why does the Toyota cost 5 or 6k more?" "Because it's a Toyota" Me "Huh? Later." My 2019 Pro 4x is loaded, including sunroof, for thousands less. I just watch a few videos that pop up to tell anyone on the fence how nice the Frontiers are.
That's why I just bought a 2019 Frontier Pro-4x. I get leather seats with driver and passenger power adjustability, rear differential locker, a bed I can actually reach (I'm 5'8"), and jeep-like capability. Power moonroof, Siri voice connectivity, roof rack, bed rails with adjustable tie down anchors, over 10" of ground clearance, etc. etc. and I picked it up for a lot less than either a Taco TRD Pro or loaded GMC Canyon. The Taco's seating position was a deal breaker. I couldn't adjust the seat enough for me to feel like I was driving a truck--it just left me feeling out of position and uncomfortable. The Frontier Pro-4X sits me upright and right in front of the steering wheel--360 degree visibility was by far the best in the Frontier compared to the Taco and Colorado. I did feel that the Colorado was a more comfortable fit for me than the Frontier, however.. I test drove the Taco TRD Pro (over 50K full retail), the Chevy Colorado loaded with leather, etc. I admit that the Chevy is the best, IMO, on road among the midsize trucks I test drove. But, it too was well over 43K. Even more with the Diesel. No thanks. Happy with the Frontier so far. Seems like an honest, simple yet capable truck.
@@waterhead1029 Nice! Got a 2019 gunmetal loaded p4x myself in a Crewcab. Love it and saving up for mods. Not enough people know how awesome these rugged little trucks are
Just bought a 2018 Pro 4x and Love it. They asked if I wanted to trade in my 2001 Frontier Crew Cab... Hell no!, I love that truck too, and its still runs like new with 225k miles on it. That's part of the reason I stuck with Nissan and bought another Frontier!
Got my new 2018 frontier sv for 26 grand. That included a tire upgrade, folding bed cover, nerf bars, and roof rack install from the dealership. Upgraded the speakers myself after purchase. Now i have almost everything the pro4x has except leather lol. Toyota couldnt touch that for under 32 grand. I found the interior of the toyota to be my favorite by far, but the nissan seems to have so much more passenger room for some reason. In all honesty, i set out to buy a new taco, but on my friends advice i gave nissan a chance to earn my business and they did. Couldnt be happier with my frontier.
I don't dislike the Tacoma, but it isn't worth several thousand dollars more. It's mostly the "Toyota Tax" in my opinion. My Pro 4x is loaded and plenty "sexy".
The Nissan is the best looking truck in this group and all the guy says is "it needs a refresh" compared to the other 2 ugly trucks here the question is why?? If it ain't broke don't fix it 👍
Frontier continues to be the most under-rated truck in the segment. Most V6 power, disc brakes, dependability, and price. Nissan is the best value in the segment hands down.
+Shawn Crowe.... I might just have to agree with you Shawn! I bought my 07 Frontier Nismo 9 years ago (new) after a lot of research, test driving, gabbing with mechanics and I'm still very content with the truck. It's had about 500 pounds of trades gear in the bed since new, so have used it for its intended purpose. I certainly don't baby it, but maintain it very well. I put real truck tires on it from the get go (Michelin AT's) and replaced the radiator at the 8 year mark before the extended warranty ran out. Apparently some of the earlier models had a problem with the coolant leaking into the transmission and causing havoc, but Nissan extended their warranty to cover any problems for a full 8 years. For me, it seemed like cheap insurance to replace the rad, so I did. Other than that, I like the 4 litre VQ motor (torquey) and the handling is very good for a truck. I could go on and on, but I won't Cheers!
+Adio V Last I checked, Toyota was #2 in recalls issued over the last 10 years, right behind GM. Both companies make over-rated and over-priced garbage. Meanwhile, Nissan has all the bugs worked out of their "old" midsize pickup and it's the best value on the market.
+Irishmick I wouldn't call Nissan reliable, my brothers 07 nismo frontier has been nothing but problems ever since he got, started with the radiator, than the whole cooling system, a bad transmission and warped heads, he finally got rid of that pos
+Irishmick I have a 05 frontier and I definatly agree with you. Very very reliable. No problems with normal maintenance. even take it off roading. this truck has been through alout and if tanks it all out. Great little truck I hope they refresh it.
No offense but this is dumb. Most people who actually offroad will upgrade their suspension to their needs anyway. Nissan is a great truck but the company is complete garbage and wont help their customers.
Nissan frontier is the best value for sure, i can take the cash i save in the frontier and put that back into the vehicle and make a monster for less money than a TRDPRO
I've got a 2017 Frontier Pro 4x and I LOVE IT. I did my research and I wanted something functional and reliable. I've been on trails where my side view mirror was taken off by a tree, or dented the skid plate, but it made it through. It's about 10k cheaper (in Canada at least) than a Tacoma and I don't care about modern styling of things, I want something simple and functional. If there was a "small" truck still existing I may have gone for that, but the Fronty is a wonderful, reliable, and functional truck. If it aint broke don't fix it. Nissan has been making trucks since the early 1900s.
I think the style of the Frontier has stood the test of time. It still looks sharp to me. I have a 2005 model with 238,000 miles on it. The only real issues I've had so far are the classic transmission issue and crankshaft/camshaft sensors needing to be replaced. I also had to replace the driver's side window motor. No engine problems at all this far... knock on wood.
they are all over priced. the gm is actually the better value if you think about it. vehicles pricing has been sky rocketing where ever it can especially on trucks. you can get a 50k tundra.. like what the fuck!?!? how can they sell that piece of shit for over 30??!
+AdventuRide They can ask what they want... and GET it if the truck has good resale value(of which Toyota is unmatched with the Taco). To Chevy- this concept is unheard of. Maybe things will change, but it takes time. It is a shame that ALL vehicles MSRPs are thru the roof(means 6-7 yr finance terms) which means Toyota wins in my book with the Tacoma- still hate to pay 37K for a truck that I paid 31k for in 2013(although I did just WHOLESALE it to a dealer for $24K with 60K miles and never even had to replace the tires... 5 oil changes and wipers once)
Finally a midsize review that doesn't go... oooh shiny truck and give an automatic win to the canyon/colorado. I personally would take the frontier... its the most honest truck of the bunch... sure its not as plush as the new gm twins and it doesn't have the downsized engine of the tacoma... but its a truck that makes no apologies. The 4.0 is torquey and lively, and the chassis is beefy since it pretty much comes down the titan assembly line.
+Ultimatemxcn even though im a chevy fan i can agree. you can see Nissan intended for the truck to WORK. Toyota and GM have so much fucking chrome/bells and whistles that nobody needs... and it jacks up the price astronomically. Nissan is looking to cater to the consumer, everyone else is looking for $$$.
+FPSGHoST808 its also a lot cheaper because they've been selling the same shit to people for over 7 years. that 4l does have some power but its also a dohc v6 which explains why they are such guzzlers. you can get a 2000 sierra with a 5.3 and be a lot happier
+Ultimatemxcn I am in the market, and am one of the holdouts who only buys a manual. So my options for a 4x4 manual pickup in the US is a Dodge 2500 diesel, the tacoma, or the frontier. I went to my local auto show figuring that the tacoma would be a slam dunk. Then I sat in one. It was the TRD Pro Off Road Crew cab (the biggest cab). I am 5' 10", and the front seats were so low that my legs were almost flat, and my ass felt like it was sitting on the floorboards. My 7 year old sat in the bench behind me, and his knees touched the seat. WHAT!?? I jumped in the back next to him behind my wife in the shotgun seat (she is 5' 6") and not only were my knees firmly planted against the seat, but the bench was so low that only the last 3 inches of my butt were actually touching fabric, the rest of my body was levitating over the seat because of the angle of my legs (from the low seat height). I thought I was getting punked. A Hyundai Accent has more rear legroom than this thing had. Disgusted, I begrudgingly went over to the Nissan section and sat in a Frontier Pro-4x Crew Cab. Holy crap was I surprised. Super comfortable front seats that actually felt like truck seats, my legs were at a normal 45 degree angle to the pedals. I left the drivers seat in position for where I would keep it and jumped in the back seat. I had inches of room from my knees to the back of the drivers seat, and felt pretty comfortable (wouldn't want to sit back there for a 300 mile road trip, but for an hour it would be fine).. I don't care how 'new' the Frontier looks, it is built for actual human beings to sit in, and is thousands cheaper than the Tacoma. I needed 4x4 capability to reach the family cabin in the winter, towing capacity to pull a 4,500lb trailer, and the utility to haul firewood in the bed. That is why I am taking delivery of my Frontier next month (it's a real bitch to get a manual transmission anymore!). I never thought I would choose a Nissan over a Toyota, but there you have it. Capability doesn't mean a thing if you cant squeeze your ass into it.
meestabeck Congratulations meetsabeck you it will become part of you. Hell I had a 2008 Xterra 4x4 that is now my brothers, I currently drive a Mitsubishi EVO and a Civic to commute and the Xterra is still the best vehicle I've ever had by a lot.
Due to reliabilty issues, the best truck overall is the Nissan Frontier.Consumer Reports has given the newly designed Tacoma and the GM coma/canyon a much BELOW AVERAGE RELIABILTY rating. The Nissan Frontier is the only one out of the three that has a ABOVE TO MUCH ABOVE AVERAGE RATING on reliability.
Yep. Early on the pathfinder/frontier had the infamous ATI leak and ruined the Radiator/transmission. Also fuel sending sensor would go out requiring new fuel pump. And the timing chain would go out early. It took Nissan 5 years to clear all that shit up. But after that, forget about it. This truck rocks. I just bought a Pro 4X and agree with you, this old 15 year old mid sizer is TOP OF CLASS. LOL. But compared to my 05 this has a ton more luxury. Its all new to me. Pro 4 X is a sleeper of a truck.
@@HiPlains1 i changed the cam sensors on my 06 Nismo Frontier with 98,000 miles back in 2012 at the time and then the radiator after knowing about the cross contamination issues. But ever since then my truck had piled up 280,589 trouble free miles since then. This is the best truck I've ever owned.
@@andresgarcia3516 Sounds like your are doing the transmission flush every 30K or so. From what I hear, if you keep on the maintenance these trucks will run a long time. It was a good design from the start. The 5 speed/VQ40 were never changed. Except the first few years of the pathfinder had a 270HP V6. Then they dropped it to 261. Not sure if the frontier had the more powerful tune. But if so your truck probably has the 270 HP version. In 2018 the frontier was rated the most reliable mid size truck one can buy. The Toyota Tundra is considered the most reliable full size. And both are old school tech. I think the problem with the newer trucks is the need to meet CAFE/MPG/EPA goals. The newer active learning transmissions are more complicated with awkward shift points. The Tacoma's 6 speed is reliable but frustrating to drive. GM's Colorado 8 speed has suffered for years with shuddering and torque convertor failures. The 10 speed on the Ranger seems to be ok. Ended up buying a pro 4X frontier because I just didn't want any problems. Still amazing this truck holds up so well. Better interior then both GM/Ford. I owned a Ranger overseas and the Frontier is more ergonomic and has a nicer layout. Very functional no nonsense truck. People always hate on the frontier for being dated but the VQ40 is such a wonderful motor. Lots of torque off the line. Never seems to lack power and the 5 speed is very smooth and shifts appropriately. This is a very similar setup to the Japanese built 4Runner with a old 5 speed and 4.0 liter. Also considered extremely reliable and great power-train.
I don't understand people. A good design looks good. It doesn't age. You guys look at a design say it looks great and then 5 years later change your mind? If GM sold a 1963 corvette with a modern drivetrain they couldn't make enough to keep up and the 2016 will always be more badass then a 1992 corvette. Good is good. Either say it looks good or bad. This "dated" in need of refresh...what is that?
The Frontier hasn’t seen any changes. That’s what they mean. The halogen bulbs up front are kinda lame compared to modern LEDs on most other trucks. The Frontier is a badass truck. It’s just nice it’s we some upgrades. Which it finally got.
My first truck is an 88 Toyota pickup 4x4 and still have it today. My second truck 28 years later is 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road. I don't like to wast my hard earned money on repairs or interest on car loans.
nissan all day. all night. twice Sunday and 3 times in july. quality, dependability, ruggedness, functionality, price, durability...takes the cake. don't get me wrong, toyota = great truck. but all in all, for what you need it for, frontier all day. just got a 2016 4x4 extended cab long bed. use it for work. love it. g m twins are def good lookin, but you'll be in the shop more than on the road. I'll take tried and true tested dependability and reliability over pretty bells n whistles all day. all night. twice sunday. and you guessed it, 3 times in july.
I have a '14 nissan frontier pro-4x and it's my second one and I will definitely get another. Dated or not I love my fronty. Still sells today despite no major changes in -15- years! And going up against more and more ever flashy and more capable trucks. That is a statement, go nissan!
still love my 2012 pro4x frontier 6spd. best vehicle i've owned. the mpgs arent great but i wouldnt trade it for the lumbering colorado/canyon or soulless tacoma. just waiting for the next gen frontier. its a simple truck with less tech but great mechanics. handles extremely well, handles all the terrain i can throw at it and towing even our enclosed race trailer if i have to (prefer not). it reminds me of the fun that i had with my 91 4runner
i just love how simple and no bullshit the truck is. i've not even felt the need to modify anything yet its been so functional. only thing ive done is put a tri fold hard toneau (which has been amazing)
I don't know about anyone else, but i'll stick to Toyota in this segment. The Chev/GM truck may be good, but with the recalls and unproven truck I am staying away. The Nissan has been around for awhile though and may be worth a close look.
+rocker85675 well I have any friends who own yotas from 2000 and up and not one of them have frame issues. I work at a place with a thousand employees that make high wages and nobody here is experiencing unusual frame issues on newer yotas and we are living in the worst area for salt in North America. I've owned yotas for 25 years and never had frame rust issues. take care of your truck, and you won't have unusual corrosion issues.
rocker85675 the rusting frame issue was with the first gen Tacomas only. The frames where made by Dana instead of Toyota (4runners are made in Japan and had no issues with very similar frame) Dana cheaped out on the steel and coatings causing them to rust. Dana then had to pay Toyota 25 million in the end. They are obviously not using Dana any more for USA built trucks and have no rust issues unless you live in the rust belt where everything rusts away.
You're kidding. The frontier looks like a crossover with a bed. The best looking truck is the Tacoma, its simplistic and beautiful curves are very truck like.
@@spawner2865 negligible more power. But sure, it does. I'll take the beautiful Taco that will last half a million miles though. Even if it's a little "weaker".
Nice review, very positive throughout. I don't care which truck wins with the great breakdown you guys did. Makes choosing a truck very wide open to a buyers wants or needs. I think reliability should be added in somewhere within the percentages based on something, maybe consumer reports and weight it heavily. I really don't think fuel mileage carries a lot of weight in real world. I think it is more like talking about the weather, its just something we have to talk about but it really doesn't matter that much as we are only talking about the difference between the two. Now the diesel is a different animal when talking fuel mileage and you did say you were confused why it took so long to get here and you touched on the reasons why. The reason why diesel is becoming an option is because of café requirements. I agree the Tacoma engine is a poor upgrade. Ford is leading the way with the small eco boost motors. The 2.7eco boost gets 325HP and 375Lb-ft of torque which is a superior choice over the diesel option in the Colorado at 369 torque and 181HP for the following reasons. Combined epa is 20mpg in a heavier truck in the F150 with the eco boost, maybe 21 in a midsize vs 28 in your Colorado test truck. However, the eco boost is cheaper to buy and produce and I have seen from my calculations (do your own) but it can take 3-8 years to see a payback on the diesel option due to extra maintenance, initial cost and other diesel expenses, (timing chain at 240K needs to be replaced as well, how much is that?) so the only advantage is that you can go further on a tank between fuel stations but you will need to as diesel fuel is not an option at many service stations. Now look at the torque curve on both motors, the torque may be the same but the torque curve on the gas motor is superior throughout the rpm range with superior HP. So if you want to accelerate as slow as the diesel you can maintain that low rpm big torque grunt out of the hole while maintaining decent fuel epa in the gas motor. Ask for more and you will burn a lot more fuel because you can, which is an advantage, a very big advantage for acceleration and maintaining speed up big hills but you do lose the fuel for that, but that is not an option with the diesel, you just get a flat throttle with low hp. SO WHY OFFER A DIESEL. Well choice is always a good thing, however manufacturers will not build it for that reason. The reason is a gamble on their part in order to meet café requirements. You see this with Subaru where their café requirements are above 40mpg, GM at about 33. Obahma stated it needs to be at 54.5mpg by 2025. Subaru is being forced to drop their models because of this or switch to battery, pay the fines for gas or switch to diesel, which is an inferior option they don't want, but if they do it, they will put a positive spin on it to try to sell it, much like GM with the diesel option, even though in my educated opinion based on the above, is an inferior choice to the boosted gas motor. The boosted gas motor will also have a big advantage at higher altitudes or on low atmospheric pressure days over an naturally aspirated motor. The other big problem with diesel that you touched on is the exhaust restrictions. The pollution from diesel vehicles in the UK is a big problem right now. Unlike gas motors diesel emits a soot which goes in your lungs but never comes out. It attaches to your alveoli for life and the small chemical particulates in diesel are so small they penetrate your skin, heart, kidneys, lungs and brain. Many birth defects are being linked in the UK right now due to the diesel problem. The government has actually admitted guilt and are offering subsidies to people returning a diesel for a battery powered car right now. Regardless of mandated filters only 3 of 24 cars actually passed the mandated exhaust standards, largely in part in that garages offer modified filters that increase a diesels hp and torque and saves them fuel, so owners opt to buy the filter and the garages make a sale and we breath in the problem. Even with mandated filters the pollution is still a problem compared to gas emissions as the dangers are far greater with the soot and micro particulates that still get out and penetrate the body. Even VW tried to cheat the filters with computer programming and went a step further by altering the engine oil, spiked with diesel fuel to lower the carbon exhaust. Without these proper filters VW gets better numbers for HP and torque. When filtered properly and safely the diesel is less attractive and weak to a buyer. This will happen in North America due to café requirements and we too will suffer from this pollution should diesel take off. We are on the brink of seeing battery powered cars with instantaneous torque (no rpm required) so powerful that mining companies are using battery powered scoop trams and we are on the brink of using hydrogen powered cars that run on water and the exhaust is oxygen. One way to slow this inevitable progression is to take easy way out and switch to diesels due to lobbyist's from the fuel companies bribing our governments. Obahma stated that by 2025 manufacturers will have to comply with an epa of 54.5 mpg. Diesel is an inferior option but that is the easiest route for manufacturers to take right now but it is a sht storm for all of us if it comes to fruition just like what is happening in the UK right now. So before banking on diesel is safe published by bribes from the establishment, bank on proof that is so undeniable right now that the UK government admitted to wrong doing by offering subsidies years ago to buyers of diesels. The reason was to reduce the C02 footprint to stop global warming and even that is being proven wrong right now and they admit they should have gone to battery, hydrogen or stuck with the gas engine. Diesel works for commercial use outside the big cities but bringing diesel into fruition within the city in vast numbers will be a big mistake and the motors don't have any capital gain to them, suffer from low hp and have an inferior torque curve compared to a turbo gas motor. I noticed the 0-60 times are very slow. MT has the new Tacoma tagged at 7.1 seconds and the manual Tacoma has a better gear ratio and no lag so it does 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, both are faster than the V6 Colorado. I would rather have a V8 in the Tacoma or an eco boost. I hope Ford builds a mini Raptor and some day slams a 5.0 eco boost Coyote V8 in it.
Kevin Voyer You sure? www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/most-and-least-reliable-cars-by-class/ You click on the truck and it shows you an image of the new 2016 model.
love my gmc canyon (2016 gas engine). super versatile fun has great towing capacity and luxirous. i agree it has low clearance but im not one to go over 15mph off road anyways.
The water board I work for bought 16 colorados (4 4cyl& 12 v-6). They have been troublesome past 50k miles. Every sensor seemed to go out and electrical problems too. The v6s are breaking down at a faster rate than the 4cyl do. Can shafts problems in 3 of them and transmission problems in 5 of them. Only 2 are 4wd and their transfer cases have both gone out. Only six still have a working air conditioning. Just two are past a 100k miles and both are 4cyl
The Z71 an off-road package? LMAO!! What a joke. It's little more than a decal package, and belongs in mall parking lots with the Ridgelines and Rav-4s.
Darren Thorsen sure Darren sure. But actually while not as hard core as trdpro, the shocks and front spring are different, there are skid plates and locking diff standard. Not to mention the tires.
now do the 2016 small truck shootout....oh wait...you cant, cause the damn auto makers wont make small trucks! Some of us just need a truck bed to haul around a rider mower or a washing machine and take trash to the dump. I don't need a $35k+ machine with almost 300hp to do that!
+RCPro Driver I picked up a 15' Frontier SV crew cab 2wd 4.0 V6 brand new for $24k back in October. They keep talking about the dated interior, coming from a 91' ranger, it's new to me. I just need it for hauling some stuff and the occasional tow, does fantastic. Don't need the extra cost in maintenance for a 4wd nor do I do off-roading. 2wd does fine in the snow if you know what your doing. A lot of these reviewers do the expensive trucks because the dealers get free advertisement and they want to push the higher end models.
T Ritchie Even the ridgeline is overbuilt for what I need to do. The payload capacity is double what I would need, and I don't need a crew cab. Im talking about companies taking a sedan or wagon, chopping the back off, maybe beafing up the rear suspension a bit and that's all I need. I need a vehicle that can haul around a riding mower/atv in the back...without it costing half what my house cost!
RCPro Driver Good luck finding that! Seems to me that everything new cost a fortune! From what I've seen of the new stuff Ridgeline comes closest to being what your after.Personally I like Trucks but part of me wouldn't mind a Ridgeline for a 3rd vehicle if I was rich. I guess its almost like a car. Kind of the modern elcamino. Not completely sure why its caught my interest though.Seems like I like most Trucks.
+camaroman101 Yep, we had a story on the testing portion - www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/tech/chevrolet-colorado-zr2-concept-caught-testing-54394.html. No confirmation from GM though.
+Off-Road.com Interesting read. I really feel like they will put the gas engine in it, just because of the improved performance/$$ ratio. What I would hope they do is tweak the diesel to put out around 50+ more hp, but who knows if they can. I absolutely would buy the ZR2, if I had the $$.
+SineOccasu The diesel was introduced for café requirements. It has no advantage over a small eco boost in capital expenditure and no other benefits to it. The diesel only suits the manufacturers needs to meet café requirements. The manufacturer will not build what you want because of café requirements. The only way they can add more power is to do a special one off build or to add battery power into the mix with an eco boosted motor.
+Thomas Paul ecoboost engines do better than their naturally aspirated companion in take off but ford needs to work a lot more on them. the trucks have a huge amount of issues, look up ecoboost horror stories. the owners will tell you themselves. I'd buy a 5.0 f150 if anything but why when I can get an 8 speed 6.2 chevy that can rape them both. doesn't make much sense and is even better on gas haha
Frontier!People are hating on it 'cause it's not as luxury with a big screen... Really? Trucks are made to get beat up. Want a nice car, go buy a sedan. Stop trying to ask for gold sprinkle on your bread.
Before you jump on the tacoma wagon, check out there forum... even the owners are calling it the turd gen instead of third gen... canyon has alot of bugs at the moment and it shows on there forum also... im trying so hard to get a frontier before they update it in 2018 and it goes down the crapper like all other vehicle at the moment. The pro 4x is an amazing buy and can hang with wranglers
Yep. The transmission on the third gen is a gutless, gear searching, hard shifting mess. 0-60 in ten seconds.. wow. Now the Colorados are having massive 8 speed failures for shudder and torque convertor failing. Big multi state class action just launched as well. And they have not fixed the transmission since 2017. Many failed TSB updates. The Colorado fan forum is loaded with problems. And GM is buying back allot of trucks too (lemon law). Its a POS. Honestly, IMO, the Frontier Pro 4X is TOP OF CLASS. After 15 years in production. I just bought one (pro 4X) and did my research. The rest do not have the capabilities or the proven reliability of the Nissan. Not even remotely so.
@@nateallen2709 also because that trans likes to shift early (killing torque). It searches gears all over the place. Did that on a straight level road on a test drive. Still amazes me how many buy them. Toy should offer their d4d diesel. Something/anything 😢
I really like the Tacoma, however I did not like the engine change even though it does have more power. I like to do my own oil change and on the new engine they moved the oil filter from the top to the bottom of the engine and the skid plate have to be removed to get to the filter also it is a paper filter that is removed from the filter housing. Very messy and time consuming doing a oil change. I understand that Toyota is very conservative company but with all the changes that they made I was hoping they would make a four wheel ABS disc brakes available even if it is a option package. It would be nice to the option to choose it. Overall I love the Tacoma. It is good to see GM finally improved the Colorado and the Canyon. They are on the right track. With continue improvement these trucks may take the lead. I feel that the Nissan Frontier needs to start to make the improvements now to keep up with there competitors. But it is a good truck, just need to keep up with the times
I'm not sure about the 2016 Tacoma, but the new TRD Pro 2017 has the skid-plate designed so that you can change the oil without removing the plate, and without dripping oil all over it when removing the filter. Seems that they might have designed these the same way.
People, please for the love of god, stop making videos comparing Nissan Frontiers to trucks like the Tacoma. They aren't the same thing. The Tacoma doesn't have a fully boxed ladder frame. It doesn't have 4 wheel disc brakes. It has a plastic truck bed you cannot put anything into without voiding your warranty. It is nothing but a glorified grocery getter / bro-dozer. The ONLY advantage you have in a Tacoma over a Frontier is the fact that you can resell it for higher. That of course is offset by the fact that you quite clearly PAID more for it up front. The Frontier is the last true midsize truck made for truck owners. STILL the most rigid fully ladder boxed frame on the market of all midsizes. The best reliability (JD power most reliable truck for sale in the USA, both midsize AND full size for both 2016 and 2017, whereas the Tacoma is the highest failure rated truck in the USA and Toyota as a brand has the most recalls of any import there is.) You buy a Nissan Frontier to do work, because it is reliable, because engineering to you is more important than having an extra 16 USB charging ports added to the rear passenger doors. The ONLY downside I've found to my 2016 manual pro-4x so far is the fuel economy and the fact that they won't sell it with a moonroof/sunroof when you choose a manual transmission. The fuel economy I expect. It's a heavily built chassis and body that doesn't flex and the engine, while dated, was designed for high torque and longevity. So while the neighbor with the Taco is wondering why his truck shuts off on the highway due to electrical glitches or has his passenger side door fall off of the truck when it's less than 30 days old while at 60mph, both of which have happened to coworkers of mine in the past 3 years, you can rest assured that your Frontier will mechanically and structurally stand the test of time. Toyota just lost in 2017 the largest automotive class action lawsuit in US history when the USA proved that Toyota trucks and SUVs have significant rust damage coming off of the assembly line. Before they even hit the dealer lots as new vehicles they are rusting away underneath and that's what they're selling to customers. The USA wasn't having any of that and that settlement is over 5 billion $ now and counting. The government even forced Toyota to cease sales of the FJ Cruiser in this country because they WERE BREAKING IN HALF AT THE FRAME and Toyota could not rectify the issue. Go try and buy a 2018 FJ Cruiser, I dare you. Just sold my 22 year old Nissan frontier which was parked next to the ocean most of my naval career and the salt air did literally nothing to it body or frame. Please stop comparing the current Nissan Frontiers with some of these newer midsize trucks which are trying to drive more like cars than trucks and give you CAR interiors and such rather than TRUCK interiors. They are not the same thing.
Mostly agree here but the FJ did not have the rust issues that the Taco did. From what I heard it was due to local suppliers in the US not applying the coating properly. The FJ was made in Japan. Mostly they killed it in the US because sales dropped to a mere 14K in 2014. I've not read anything that the Federal government to tell Toyota to stop selling the FJ. As for buying a 2018 FJ well they quit making them in 2014. Nothing wrong with the FJ's except they suck gas and have a small tank. You will be looking for gas after 250 miles. But prices on those are going up on autotrader. IMO, Toyota killed it too early. Its the type of truck the market is seeking out now. As for the Pro 4X I mostly agree. I just bought a 2019 with premium package. Its definitely old school. But its still the best value and probably the most reliable. I'm getting 18MPG city and over 20 Hwy as well. So IMO, the new active learning transmissions with higher failure rates is just not worth the couple extra MPG's you might get. The VQ40 is just such a great tune. Even with the 5 speed OD. This YT is one of the last to include the Frontier for comparison. Sadly, the Frontier gets little mention these days and most reviewers will just cast it off saying its old, outdated and needs a refresh bla bla bla. Meanwhile, sales of the Frontier are pretty strong: 2010 40,427 2011 51,700 2012 55,435 2013 62,837 2014 74,323 2015 62,817 2016 86,926 2017 74,360 2018 79,646 As you can see, 2018 had the second highest sales volume in the last 9 years. I'll be interested to see what the numbers will look like in the end of 2019. Not bad for a 14 year old design that Nissan does not advertise and most reviewers will just pass up completely these days. For those that do their homework they still see the Frontier as a very smart buy providing excellent value and in many cases a better truck. Longevity is a given at this point. The third gen taco/GM twins have struggled with issues (especially transmission). But the Frontier has the raw data of a decade of proven reliability. People just want something that won't give them problems. And with prices blowing past 40K on mid size trucks, this just makes allot of sense.
Yes but you can't get the premium package with that. No sunroof, leather, powerseats, roof rack, hillside descent etc.. Its a cheap package at around 2K you get allot more. For some reason the 6 speed MT does not get that package. And really hard to find one. Good luck.
The winner in the Article is the Tacoma, I'm sure all trucks will do the job, but just the insane resale value of a Tacoma should make it the clear choice. Seriously for the money these trucks cost, u might as well get a full size.
Just remove the air dam, add a 2" level to the front springs, and get some BF goodrich or Cooper AT off road tires and the Canyon / Colorado will be fine off road.
I drove all of these trucks and ultimately bought a frontier crew cab with a long bed. the gm with diesel is not worth the money. you can't buy the truck without getting a 7k$ package. the diesel itself is 3800 but you have to buy the z71 or LT upgrade package. I hate to say it but the Toyota is a great looking gutless truck. even tho they claim it has 270 HP it drives more like 150. the power comes late in the rpm range and in WV it shifted up and down constantly to maintain speed up hills.
how? i drove all of them, weighed my options. did a cost /benefit and in the end the nissan came out on top. i much rather like the way the toyota looks, but it has very little usable power and torque for highway driving up these mountains. it is worse than the gas V6 of the colorado, which i passed on because it has already had some issues come up with carbon build up due to the direct injection. the colorado was my first choice for alot of reasons. 48 inch between the rear wheel wells means it can haul a full size atv easily. interior seems comfortable and plush yet tough enough to last. but... it is an untested platform. what issues are going to develop down the road? direct injection has its own set of problems inherent to the design. the turbo diesel is what i wanted, but the fact that gm will not sell the diesel in a work truck trim means its an extra 7k$ just to get the 3800$ motor. that just turns me off regardless of how much i like the truck. the nissan was my last choice. its an older dated design but what it has going for it is a very usable power/ torque curve and a reliable history of durability. nissan has been making that same truck for about 10 years now so it stands to reason that the bugs are worked out. history shows us over and over that the first couple years a vehicle model is built is when they have the most problems and recalls.
+whatchinmewatchu came from a a f150 Eco boost and now got a frontier sv 4x4 and am totally happy. Love the look and feel And way cheaper than its competition. Tried the yodas, awesome looking truck, but wasn't for me. Would do it all over again.
@@salvadorgarcia9108 The only thing I would like, and it's only cosmetic, is an aggressive grill like the Toyota. I think the Navarra has that. The Toyota engine, especially the low torque, made me go Frontier. And, I beat the shit out of my Altimas without anything major ever failing.
I purchased my Tacoma 17 years ago, I recently sold it, for $2300 less than my purchase price. I can't think of another vehicle that could compete with that. Not to mention, I only replaced the clutch, timing chain, battery, and light bulbs. And I wooped its ass.
First gen was the best. Second gen was still pretty good. But the current taco is a POS. Horrible transmission. Very slow. And there are more problems now. Its less reliable then the frontier at this point and the VQ V6 on the Frontier is more powerful with great throttle response. Frontier sales are actually going up again. Mainly because the rest are going to advanced transmissions that have performance and reliability issues. But the first gen tacos are collectors items at this point. People just want to pick them up.
@@HiPlains1 frontier sales PALE in comparison to tacoma. That tells you something about what people care about. Nissan is never going to beat Toyota in quality and reliability. That slow transmission you mentioned in the taco will never mix oil and coolant like the nissan did. And it will last longer, overbuilt, and runs smooth. Tacoma's hold their value for good reason.
The third generation taco is even worse for engine/transmission performance. ALLOT worse. And from what I hear, the frontier is the new reliability king. Plenty of issues with the taco transmissions and even more issues with GM's 8 speed. Toy is riding on past reputation and resale value. All your yoyo's chant resale value/reliable, resale/reliable over and over and over........ And even when toy puts a crap transmission into the third gen you have some that rationalize and make excuses and whatever to deny any problem. But many loyalist won't buy the third gen and others don't like what they bought. The Frontier on the other hand is the REAL DEAL. you better believe it.
Even though I likely won't need it, that surprised me. My Pro 4x has more torque than a new design Toyota. I'd have noticed that if I was one of their engineers. Torque is a big deal with trucks. If I was designing something brand new, it would be a beast. At least more than a truck from 2006.
@@HiPlains1 It probably wont be like my plain Jane Ranger, parts were available everywhere, and mechanics had worked on them, pretty much unchanged, for many years. But the Frontier has to have cheaper parts available, and mechanics have been turning a wrench on them longer.
While the toyota is not a piece of shit, it is most certainly overpriced just like the GM. The best value is the frontier. No matter how you do the math you cannot escape the fact that the frontier is so much more attainable. I will admit it is a very old design but it works. I have owned a tacoma and I currently own a frontier CC long bed 4x4 SV. I also used to own a 2009 frontier cc pro4x. I like my frontier so much more than the tacoma just due to the fact that it had more power and offered so much more for the price. Offroad, I would have to say the tacoma was a bit better because of the stock ride height being higher than the frontier, but that is fixed by spending 1/4th of the price difference on a lift kit.
That Tacoma motor is probably fine on the dirt, but on those occasions when long periods of Interstate driving is necessary, this motor will drive you nuts with it's constant need to downshift to maintain speed on even small hills. I suppose flat highways would be fine, however. The seating position sux, too.
Honestly, these are terrible buys. I don't think they understand the bulk of the mid-size market. There is a market who wants a small off-road utilitarian vehicle. But thats not the main mid-size market. The main market are people who need a cheap truck that doesn't need to haul a lot. That's the main selling feature of the Tacoma, $16k MSRP. It was also the main feature of the 2nd gen Dakotas. The 3rd gens started at $25k MSRP. These trucks are just too expensive. They sell higher than full-sizes. They also get the same MPG as full sizes. This is why all mid-size truck sales combined in January was less than the Ram. Just take this Canyon and compare it to the Ram EcoDiesel. Same MSRP, Same MPG, but the Ram is heavier with a larger displacement engine. It also comes with many more features.
+Kevin Smith You cannot lease any other truck for the low payments that come with a Tacoma. Price a 4 door Tacoma off road (manual even cheaper) with a V6 and price any other similar equipped 4x4 4 door and you will pay 100 to 600 dollars more per month. The Tacoma is the cheapest lease option. The only one that comes close but is still higher is a Frontier. This is the true value for your money because the Tacoma gives back higher resale proven by their lease plans. With a lease you only pay for the depreciation. That is proof the Tacoma is cheaper than full size. And the Tacoma does this and is more capable than a Ford Raptor when off roading.
1.You sponsored reviewers need to stop talking down a design because of it's age. How many years did the Porsche design dominate. If it's good it's good! 2. That diesel has lots more cost to it besides the initial retail. One of the biggest lies about diesel is that fuel economy saves you money. Fuel filters, exhaust oil, glow plugs, loss of use while those maintenance requirements are being done, diesel fuel that cost the same as premium gas, all lead to a higher cost of ownership. The Ike Gauntlet test has also proven it's not at all that much better of a towing vehicle then the others.
+Scumerican Have you ever seen the Frontier in action? I had a buddy in a 10 year old 2WD Frontier follow my year old 4x4 Tacoma through Diablo Dropoff without so much as a hiccup. I'll admit we were concerned and I had my tow strap ready, but after watching the Nissan soldier through like it did, I've got nothing bad to say about the Frontier.
Binder Dundat I agree, that's why I bought one. My comment was directed at Scumerican re "Lame ass Nissan" though. The Frontier is hardly a Tacoma, but it's no slouch out in the shit either.
This really isn’t a fair review. That’s the Toyota Tacoma Trd off-road package which is expensive because It has the TRD package. You can still get a Tacoma SR5 or a Prerunner and it be cheaper. But, that’s TRD suspension does look like a blast..........love the interior of the Tacoma. It’s clean, and it looks modern while also being a bit tactical. Wish they would upgrade the interior of the frontier. It’s so dated. The interior for the new nissans look good, perhaps they should give the frontier a spin. But, with updated interior comes and updated price so don’t expect the frontier to be the same bang for your buck value
GM - Went for the consumer market that doesn't off-road much. That diesel is aligned more to commuting and weekend yard/gravel and boaters. Its a perfect truck for suburban weekend warriors. Drop the price by $10k and GM will take the market share.
+Steve C I think the most recent Super Bowl era commercials portrayed it the best. The Colorado ad showed a metro sexual driving his cool truck around downtown Los Angeles while the Tacoma ad didn't even bother showing a driver, but instead had their trucks bouncing over dirt roads and (albeit a bit ridiculous) being jumped by motorcycles surrounded by fake explosions. I've also never met an actual Tacoma owner who gave two shits about the lack of power seats and the (apparent) low seating position. I personally love the high clearance and low center of gravity the latter affords my Tacoma as it makes it that much easier to hang my head out the window to determine whether or not that rock I'm driving over is going to plant itself in my door panel, which again doesn't seem like a subject someone attracted to the Government Motors twins would ever put themselves into the position to worry about in the first place.
He said wasn't happy with just a 3mpg increase for the Tacoma. Then tried to compare it to the gmc diesel. Key word there being diesel. You can't call the mpg of the Tacoma bad (which it's not) then compare it to a diesel. The canyon diesel was made to get mpg's, not tow. It's a mid size.
+Jason Corbin And it is 181HP which is a joke. Throttle response is flatter than paper. Step on paper and push as hard as you want, its still flat (0-60 in 10 seconds) Watching paint dry would be way more exciting. And the diesel is easily modified which is a big problem in the UK right now with toxic emissions. Diesel is a soot that stays in your lungs and the chemicals are so small they penetrate every part of your body
+Spurphy you guys talk about it like its some magic, if the truck cant get up the hill without it it wont get up a hill with it. you cant cheat physics
That's your opinion. I think the Canyon looks bitchin' and getting that kind of mileage while towing a decent load is pretty cool. if I need to tow heavier loads I'll us my dually. But to get the same mpg as my Avalon but be able to haul a load or trailer fills in the gaps.
+thehotsung8701A Lift kits are pretty cheap for a 4"-6" lift. That's why I didn't add the GMC special wheels to the order. But then due to contract concerns I had to back out of the order. I just don't trust my company anymore. Wish Toyota could bring their diesels to the US like the tons of diesel Land Cruisers and Troop Carriers we have here in Afghanistan. I may just get an older LC and if it needs a new engine look into a diesel repower. But finding a V-8 diesel like what they have from the factory will be a PITA. Not sure if I can order one from Japan or not but I doubt it.
I blame the U.S for not giving us diesel like the 35 mpg diesel Toyota Hilux or Navara or Ranger, etc.... Our trucks get 15 mpg tops. I won't get a truck until we get a real diesel truck that isn't a Ram.
What a boring review. The presenters are knowledgeable on the trucks, but they just offer 0% entertainment value. You guys should down a six pack before your next filming or maybe some redbulls to make your vids more exciting.
one short coming with this video is that one cannot hear the sound of the engines . This to me is one of the main caveats of reviewing vehicles.Otherwise, there are some excellent camera angles and still shots. I love the shape of the Nissan.
love this vid boys ty! I'm a die hard! Chevy man! but I've owned a new tacoma since 98 till currently and I love my 2015 taco! but I do believe my new truck will be a Colorado with this DURAMAX! so ty for this video!
Too bad you guys had the long bed of the canyon. It's too long with that config. and I think it hinders some of the off road worthiness. I'm having a blast in my CC SB 4x4 diesel 'rado so far. Definitely a bit different on the power delivery, but all in all very happy and easy to get used to. it feels like it can crawl up just about anything I need it to. Thanks for the honest review guys. I love a little competition in the market place.
OMG, the Canyon is a urban station wagon that looks like a truck, you can't take that go off roading, but take it go everyday grocery shopping is the best. lol
Put a lift kit on it and try again. Videos like this show the high speed Baja aspects but if you're into technical off-roading then slow speed is where is at. Ground clearance and low end grunt.
The new Ford Ranger with the 3.2 turbo diesel would easily make light work of this trial and would win this shootout hands down....its way better than the Frontier. Too bad for the USA that it's not sold there Americans would love the new Ranger.
Adding to the value on the Frontier... no one pays $35k for a new Frontier. Nissan knows its an older truck and dealers will take big discounts on the truck. 2016 is probably the best year to buy a frontier because its a proven reliable product and the New GM twins and the New Tacoma puts pressure on Nissan and its dealers to sell cheaper.
+glenvandy The Nissan is almost doing better in sales right now than the Colorado and it is the shortest truck in the fleet which really helps making it the smallest truck to many that need shorter to park and fit within garages and parking spots. Many do not buy trucks in 4 door because of the length. Toyota got 4 inches longer which I really hate.
The Tacoma is ugly plus it's way too small inside to be a midsize truck. I have a 2014 front tier and it clearly has more space inside and the looks or a lot better in my opinion
@@princessluna1233 Just drive a third generation and you will see what happened to the engine/transmission. Its a gutless, gear searching, hard shifting, mess. Plus you still sit on the floor with legs straight out. What's with that toyota? Low ceiling and no heighth adjustment and no power seat. Keep your second gen. Its' allot better then the new one. You want new get the frontier. Trust me. Pro 4 X owns the taco offroad and better offroad ride and more power. Thousands cheaper too.
My wife and I live in Maine but our son lives in Utah. He says the Tacoma is becoming very popular for use there for back-country camping and exploring. Just wish they'd stop using the phrase, "off-road" because it gives too many people the impression that the owners are out destroying the back-country. That's an unfortunate misperception. Almost all the owners of stock Jeeps and pickups stay on existing roads.
Buyers beware. Toyota still hasn't fix the driveshaft vibration issues. I have a 2016 4door long bed TRD off road. Feels like your hitting rumble strips at low speeds.
Great job guys. For some reason I like the look of the Frontier the best but I'm sure it just has grown on me over the years. Personally for what I need a truck for the Colorado or Canyon would be just fine for me but I am also waiting now for the new Honda Ridgline to compare with the Chevy/GMC. One thing I have noticed is nobody seems to want to review the Canyon or Colorado with the 4 cylinder and stick?? I would love to know what you guys think of the 4 cylinder Colorado and I believe one can also buy this truck with 4wd.
im a chevy gm guy but come on give a little more ground clarence to all there trucks, silverado as well an id reather lose a little mpg for more truck , the guy that spends 40 k or more for a pick up should have little more off road capability from factory ,Z71 should be little higher then a none Z71 locking rear end skid plats better sway bar all cool and good but need to sit higher so ur not scared driving off road ....sad ....imo
I'd say the GMC is for people who need a truck but want something luxurious. The Nissan is for people who want a good simple reliable capable off-road truck. The Toyota is for people who want a good simple reliable capable off-road truck, and want other people to notice them.
Another thing to consider is going off road, I feel better beating up a cheaper truck than taking 50k to get roughed up, nissan takes the cake hands down with the costs savings you can do upgrade mods or repairs when you beat it up in the bush.
I test drove the new duramax in the 2016 colorado and drove my friends up a logging road. The turbo lag really sucks, it's a lot more than what they stated in the video. If you let off the gas it's gonna take about 2.5-3 seconds for you to get the power back. It's got a weird power ban and delivery. If you want one to trick out and go off roading I'd invest in a better turbo.
it's going to be a long long road for GM to catch up to the Tacoma or Frontier, my guess is they'll be discontinued just like the previous gen twins in a few short years, i laughed when Motor Trend named the Colorado "truck of the year" and it was recalled before it even hit the showroom floors lmao
DeftonesFan867 the Tacoma has outsold the twins 2 to 1 combined on average since the twins came out and that's before the new 2016 Tacoma was available, did you see Autoguide's reliability ratings list? the twins took 32nd and 33rd place out of 33 vehicles LMAO, looks to me like they have a long long road before they can compete with the Tacoma
+guy proulx Lmfao at reliability ratings on BRAND NEW models. Also you said they can't compete with Nissan or Toyota. Now you're just picking Toyota? Nevermind the fact that Toyota only updated the Tacoma because of the GM twins.
DeftonesFan867 take a look at Autoguides ratings, these ratings are based on 2015 models and problems people have experienced with these vehicles, even if Toyota had kept the older model it would still be light years ahead of the new twins for reliability, you can also look at forums on the twins and see for yourself how bad the twins are, the twins were recalled before they even hit the showroom floors and GM had to stop production on them to take care of a few safety recalls, seats coming loose, brake calipers leaking ect...how about the old gen twins, how was their reliability compared to the Tacoma, well i guess we shouldn't go there LMAO
the turbo diesel may be able to make considerably more power with a programmer to adjust fuel and wastegate pressure once companies start making them. but for now the frontier has both beat with usable power and torque in real driving conditions
Cole's World than the older Colorado/Canyon? Not saying much. The new GM twins are only two years old, truck of the year both years! So give them time they might do better. But as is, you can get a better deal and money off to begin with. But the tacos sell at full price everywhere I looked at them!! When I was shopping for my Colorado I did look st the new taco which is a nice truck, but like I wrote about^^^ the taco does not haul as much weight or tow as much. Plus I was able to get $5,000 OFF on the Colorado, offered 0 off on the Tacoma. Plus got $2,000 more for my trade. So I saved $7,000!!!! Buying the Colorado new!! It will take years to make up that much difference if at all!
well if you think about it @kavin voyer, if they are willing to give away $7000.00 on a brand new truck what will it do to a used one. The domestic automakers use unrealistic prices to lure in buyers who dont understand true value. Ask yourself, if both these trucks were the same price[which they are at MSRP] what one would you buy. If you look into detail of Chevrolet history in the past decade you will understand that they have been making below average cars. therefore they have to give such massive discounts cuz no one considers them a competition for the taco[ it has over 70% market share] being $5000 more. but best of luck with the colorado. i love the way it looks.
Comparing gasoline engines with a diesel in the terms of MPG is like comparing apples to oranges. Canyon is also mid 40k in the tested configuration. Ill take a Tacoma with its underpowered V6 any day to save 7k plus, and have a vehicle that holds its value.
barely 1% of truck owners take their trucks off road its such a niche that most people ill never do. please review these trucks based on what 99% of people will be using them for (towing, daily driving, interior ect)
+justin bouche 99% of people who buy sports cars do not race them, so why not buy a sedan. You fail to see that many truck buyers want their vehicle to represent off road capable and to have that known heritage like Raptor, Jeep and Tacoma. Long live GM ZR2 NOT. Someday maybe. Even 40% of Tacoma buyers buy TRD models and the Pro model is back and the Raptor sells well and will be back with even more capability for off road. It is what people want regardless if they just wax it to look at it in their driveway and never see mud.
budcargeorge but there are many sports cars hot hatches (Fiesta ST) Low power RWD sports car (like BRZ and miata) and you would be incorrect as Z06s have more than 30% of their costumers who take them to tracks mclaren owners reportedly 40% take their cars to tracks do you know why more people are willing too track sports cars than go off road? its because off roading is more likely to void manufactures warranties including ford and toyota mean while almost all the large manufacturers offer a proper track warranty. so yes, my point still stands, the fact remains more than 9/10ths of people dont take their trucks off road as many manufacturers dont hold up their warranties off road.
+justin bouche Just about every review on RUclips weighs their scores toward road driving, which is why the Colorado often gets such high marks and is smartly marketed to said crowd. Go watch one of them as there are hundreds of them out there. Believe it or not, people do actually use their Tacomas and Frontiers to tear shit up with in the desert though and we appreciate the few reviews like this that are out there.
+B T I have a '15 Colorado, and I drive mine in the desert and up the mountains all the time... And I can tow off-road with it... I've test driven the '16 Toyota, and it's terrible (though better than the '15)... Horrible on the road, piss poor performance from the engine, and lackluster interior. My colorado has gone everywhere I've seen a stock Toyota go (airdam took 20mins to remove), and it's dirtier far more often than most of the tacos around town. Plus everyone laughs at the price of the GM, though a fully loaded Taco at its top trim comes in at 5k more than I paid for my fully loaded Collie.
odhinnhrafn I'm sincerely glad you like your Colorado (I mean it), but being the tax payer subsidized, union owned, Government Motors piece of shit that is, am far too biased against anything Chevrolet makes to consider it a viable contender in the mid sized market as it has no business even existing. I can at least meet you half way on the princess factor of a lot of Tacomas on the road though. Mine's consistently been the dirtiest one in town as well, and doesn't have a tenth of the useless crap everyone else seems enamored with accessorizing their trucks with and the 2016 automatic transmission sounds like it's turning out to be a real gutless piece of shit, though maybe that's what people get for driving a truck that shifts itself. That said, I couldn't be happier with my 2015 Tacoma and I'm glad you like your Colorado. I'll keep an eye out for you in the desert when you need a tow!
$37k is not in the ball park. Last-gen Tacoma with the same config was $33k. The car companies are overcharging for trucks because their popularity has increased with regular consumers in the last decade.
My theory is that Gen X and Boomers are "downsizing" and have $$$. The price reflects that. My Frontier is the perfect size. My days of moving stoves and shit are done.
Seems like an honest, simple yet capable truck.
plus available parts to swap out wether for repairs from other frontiers at the junk yard or titan upgrades

Nice!
That Frontier is STILL sexy!!!!
So sexy
Damn right!!
Eeeehh!
I don't dislike the Tacoma, but it isn't worth several thousand dollars more. It's mostly the "Toyota Tax" in my opinion. My Pro 4x is loaded and plenty "sexy".
My second truck was a 2001 Nissan Frontier(2.5L) loved that truck. I now have a 2018 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x!!
The Nissan is the best looking truck in this group and all the guy says is "it needs a refresh" compared to the other 2 ugly trucks here the question is why?? If it ain't broke don't fix it 👍
I agree the frontier is the best looking truck, love the interior too, don't know why everyone is complaining
U are correct frontier best looking truck
Frontier doesnt need a refresh lol. Still the best of the three!
I would get the Frontier.
Frontier continues to be the most under-rated truck in the segment. Most V6 power, disc brakes, dependability, and price. Nissan is the best value in the segment hands down.
Lol dependability?? Kidding right. Last I check the Tacoma was the 1 in resale of any vehicle.
Unless your main goal is to go fast on sand dunes [toyota], nissan all the way.
Nissan all the way
I've got a 2017 Frontier Pro 4x and I LOVE IT.
$43,000 for a GM mid-size truck?!? GTFO man. $30,000 is too much for a mid-size.
For real!
they are all over priced. the gm is actually the better value if you think about it. vehicles pricing has been sky rocketing where ever it can especially on trucks. you can get a 50k tundra.. like what the fuck!?!? how can they sell that piece of shit for over 30??!
5 oil changes and wipers once)
damn right.
totally agree with you!
+meestabeck toyota is a piece of SHIT
NIssan frontier good torque and HP
@@HiPlains1 i changed the cam sensors on my 06 Nismo Frontier with
98,000 miles back in 2012 at the time and then the radiator after knowing about the cross contamination issues.
All of a sudden pickups need to have a new "sexy" look? The Ranger I had had the same body style for, what, 15 years more or less?
exactly man you nailed it, if anything I think Nissan should refresh the look to be more off road badass look
I'll take tried and true tested dependability and reliability over pretty bells n whistles all day. all night. twice sunday. and you guessed it, 3 times in july.
one thing i do love about the frontier is its tried and tested. box frame, dependable engine, and just great value.
I have a '14 nissan frontier pro-4x and it's my second one and I will definitely get another. Dated or not I love my fronty. Still sells today despite no major changes in -15- years! And going up against more and more ever flashy and more capable trucks. That is a statement, go nissan!
still love my 2012 pro4x frontier 6spd. best vehicle i've owned. the mpgs arent great but i wouldnt trade it for the lumbering colorado/canyon or soulless tacoma. just waiting for the next gen frontier.
its a simple truck with less tech but great mechanics. handles extremely well, handles all the terrain i can throw at it and towing even our enclosed race trailer if i have to (prefer not). it reminds me of the fun that i had with my 91 4runner
hell yea brother! and this is coming from a 05 frontier! still works great.
i just love how simple and no bullshit the truck is. i've not even felt the need to modify anything yet its been so functional. only thing ive done is put a tri fold hard toneau (which has been amazing)
the Frontier is the best looking
it's the only one without a bloated front end. AKA it's actually a truck, not some aggressive SUV wannabe.
Robert Findlay that thing is ugly ugly ugly. Toyota for the win
I think the Frontier is fine. My dad would bitch slap me if I said "Dad, I want a sexier pickup".
the canyon is 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS more.
INSTANT disqualification in my book.
+swapsplat yep 10,000 more new and after 3-4 years it will be worth 10,000 lesss than a same year Tacoma lol
yup, Toyotas hold their resale value VERY well. Almost as well as Jeeps.
swapsplat the Tacoma has the highest resale in the bizz
+swapsplat actually the fj cruiser has the highest resale. then the wrangler then tacoma.
brian dejesus show me a link where it shows the wrangler having a higher resale than a Tacoma
Sitting in a parking lot watching this in my Tacoma while a Colorado is parked next to me and a Nissan drives by on the road
+Kevin Welliver toyota is a piece of SHIT
Karl Smith you're a peice of shit
+FloppyBit toyota is a piece of SHIT
Why does the Tacoma and Canyon look so damn bad? The Frontier is like 13 years older and it still looks better.
You're kidding. The frontier looks like a crossover with a bed. The best looking truck is the Tacoma, its simplistic and beautiful curves are very truck like.
@@Pengowirr Maybe for you, but the frontier has more power.
I love the looks of the frontier... timeless if you ask me, great truck too
@@Pengowirr ha ha, good joke... if anything here is the crossover its the taco... that frames made of cooked spaghetti
Canyon/Colorado currently occupy the #8 spot in Consumer Reports top ten list!!!........ For the least reliable new cars.
bliglum that is the older generation! The new ones say to new for info!
Kevin Voyer You sure? www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/most-and-least-reliable-cars-by-class/ You click on the truck and it shows you an image of the new 2016 model.
Better check again.

Looks like they got removed from the newer list. Progress baby!
Kelly Blue Book,J.D Power,Cars.com and U.S. News have the F150 at the top of their list. For best truck.
These guys are very articulate and break down the pros and cons very well.
For crappy cars pretending to be trucks they were good to them. Overpriced JUNK!
love my gmc canyon (2016 gas engine). super versatile fun has great towing capacity and luxirous. i agree it has low clearance but im not one to go over 15mph off road anyways.
The Nisan with less technology is your best buy by far.
I don't need a lot of the gadgets. It's like my phone, I would use next to none of them. I really like the camera / sonar gimmick.
now do the 2016 small truck shootout....oh wait...you cant, cause the damn auto makers wont make small trucks!
+RCPro Driver Maybe Honda Ridgeline? Although to me the 2017 one almost looks like a car with a truck bed. I think it would do what you said you need.
RCPro Driver
Good luck finding that!
+RCPro Driver Import a Fiat Strada from South America or Europe
Just a couple of years ago, the Tacoma had the highest resale of any vehicle on the road, may still be the case.
ZR2 Colorado & Canyon have been spied in testing and are coming soon!
+camaroman101 Yep, we had a story on the testing portion - www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/tech/chevrolet-colorado-zr2-concept-caught-testing-54394.html. No confirmation from GM though.
+Off-Road.com
Interesting read.
+Thomas Paul The diesel get much better fuel economy in the real world and for towing than an "ecoboost" engine would, not to mention the torque.
Frontier!
Dated and still looks the best
Love my 2016 Tacoma !!!
Excellent review. Watching this gives me a sense of taking it for a test drive. Thanks
I liked the video, because I got info from the comment section
Tacoma's are the Bomb
Toyota should release their new 2.8-liter diesel with the Tacoma in the US as well (The Hilux uses it). It's already Euro-4 certified.
Frontier all the way!
Meanwhile, sales of the Frontier are pretty strong:
2010 40,427
2011 51,700
2012 55,435
2013 62,837
2014 74,323
2015 62,817
2016 86,926
2017 74,360
2018 79,646
As you can see, 2018 had the second highest sales volume in the last 9 years. And with prices blowing past 40K on mid size trucks, this just makes allot of sense.
manual frontier pro 4x sign me up
Yes but you can't get the premium package with that.
Sorry bro but you messed up. Or should I say f up.
how? i drove all of them, weighed my options. did a cost /benefit and in the end the nissan came out on top. i much rather like the way the toyota looks, but it has very little usable power and torque for highway driving up these mountains. it is worse than the gas V6 of the colorado, which i passed on because it has already had some issues come up with carbon build up due to the direct injection. the colorado was my first choice for alot of reasons.
How is it that the Frontier has 281lbs of torque and power seats and Dana 44 rear axle since 2005 and the new Tacoma can't say it beats any of these?
Yota for life
the Toyota Tacoma is the best I would buy one
Still running rear drum brakes that get out of adjustment in about 120 miles.
Wife hates the ride quality and uncomfortable seats.
toyota is a piece of SHIT
It remains to be seen with third gen, but gen 1 and 2 are great trucks that will last for a long time
Dan Rigsley Toyota doesn't need to give discounts to sell their trucks, unlike the big thrre
Thomas Paul Ohh didn't notice the price of a full size went up about $8k over the last 5 years.
+TheFrogman RC toyota is a piece of SHIT
The Nissan Pro4x all the way! Don't need to change anything on it. It's a tried and proven design. Long live the VQ40 engine! :)
The Toyota Tacoma is KING
+Scumerican Have you ever seen the Frontier in action? I had a buddy in a 10 year old 2WD Frontier follow my year old 4x4 Tacoma through Diablo Dropoff without so much as a hiccup. I'll admit we were concerned and I had my tow strap ready, but after watching the Nissan soldier through like it did, I've got nothing bad to say about the Frontier.
Yes I have. Tacoma is King
Binder Dundat I agree, that's why I bought one. My comment was directed at Scumerican re "Lame ass Nissan" though. The Frontier is hardly a Tacoma, but it's no slouch out in the shit either.
+CW CW toyota is a piece of SHIT
+B T toyota is a piece of SHIT
Good thorough review, thanks.
the nissan has that thing like , i don't give a fuck how i drive it....i love nissan they keeping it simple.
I hate the LA Kings, but at least this reviewer has the class to be a hockey fan. I'll give him that much.
TOYOTA power! Best small pickups around.
No mention of crawl control? It's the main off-road feature setting the Taco apart from the competition this year!
+Spurphy you guys talk about it like its some magic, if the truck cant get up the hill without it it wont get up a hill with it. you cant cheat physics
Crawl control is for city people that dont know how to drive it isn't something to brag about !
The GM twins are so ugly.... Why would you buy a midsize for towing?
That's your opinion. I think the Canyon looks bitchin' and getting that kind of mileage while towing a decent load is pretty cool. if I need to tow heavier loads I'll us my dually. But to get the same mpg as my Avalon but be able to haul a load or trailer fills in the gaps.
+6806goats1
Canyon look good but doesn't have enough ground clearance. I wouldn't feel good going off road in it.
Just scaled down silverados and sierras
I blame the U.S for not giving us diesel like the 35 mpg diesel Toyota Hilux or Navara or
Ranger, etc....
Wow mid size trucks have gotta expensive. I'll probably buy a used Taco when my Tundra dies.
im a GM guy but the Tacoma rules the midsize segment
you ain't a GM guy you are a Brainless Delusional toyota sell out
The Tacoma is ugly plus it's way too small inside to be a midsize truck. I have a 2014 front tier and it clearly has more space inside and the looks or a lot better in my opinion
I got a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport. It has plenty of room on the inside. The Tacoma will always be king of the midsize
That may be just yours, because ours doesn't have that issue..
+Mr. Tbag well in any case I just paid 37k for it and Toyota basically told me to deal with it because there's no fix for it.
PAUL HAWTHORNE Damn, really? That's a load of shit on their end. Have you tried going to another dealership?
+Mr. Tbag not yet, but I did call Toyota corporate and they told me the same thing.
PAUL HAWTHORNE Well that's bullshit man, sorry to hear that!
I would love to know what you guys think of the 4 cylinder Colorado and I believe one can also buy this truck with 4wd.
im a chevy gm guy but come on give a little more ground clarence
to all there trucks, silverado as well an id reather lose a little mpg for more truck , the guy that spends 40 k or more for a pick up should have little more off road capability from factory ,Z71 should be little higher then a none Z71 locking rear end skid plats better sway bar all cool and good but need to sit higher so ur not scared driving off road ....sad ....imo
It isn't asking much from an expensive 4x4. A question you shouldn't really have to ask at all. This didn't dawn on the engineers?
What up with the tilt shift lens? Are they trying to make them look like toys?
when will ford bring back the Ranger
I think i will build my own truck. Cant afford any of these.
it's going to be a long long road for GM to catch up to the Tacoma or Frontier, my guess is they'll be discontinued just like the previous gen twins in a few short years, i laughed when Motor Trend named the Colorado "truck of the year" and it was recalled before it even hit the showroom floors lmao
+guy proulx Failed so much that it exceeded their sales goals....you need to get rid of your bias.
DeftonesFan867 take a look at Autoguides ratings, these ratings are based on 2015 models and problems people have experienced with these vehicles, even if Toyota had kept the older model it would still be light years ahead of the new twins for reliability, you can also look at forums on the twins and see for yourself how bad the twins are, the twins were recalled before they even hit the showroom floors and GM had to stop production on them to take care of a few safety recalls, seats coming loose, brake calipers leaking ect...how about the old gen twins, how was their reliability compared to the Tacoma, well i guess we shouldn't go there LMAO
guy proulx Recalls happen to ALL makes. Maybe I should bring up the frame rot on the Taco's making them snap in half?
the turbo diesel may be able to make considerably more power with a programmer to adjust fuel and wastegate pressure once companies start making them. but for now the frontier has both beat with usable power and torque in real driving conditions
Tacoma's hold their value a lot better..
The yota was never anything special. It just works and turns out people like stuff that works
well if you think about it @kavin voyer, if they are willing to give away $7000.00 on a brand new truck what will it do to a used one.
@kevin voyer let us know in a few years how its working out
Tacoma is number one but the Colorado is very close at 3rd in holding their value.
Started wanting a Tacoma. Then found out that at 6'1", I could not fit in one. So, went to the GMC diesel.
really? damn that sucks bro but hey you got diesel
I'm 6'4" and fit in the frontier
It is what people want regardless if they just wax it to look at it in their driveway and never see mud.
budcargeorge but there are many sports cars
hot hatches (Fiesta ST)
Low power RWD sports car (like BRZ and miata)
and you would be incorrect as Z06s have more than 30% of their costumers who take them to tracks
mclaren owners reportedly 40% take their cars to tracks
do you know why more people are willing too track sports cars than go off road? its because off roading is more likely to void manufactures warranties including ford and toyota mean while almost all the large manufacturers offer a proper track warranty.
so yes, my point still stands, the fact remains more than 9/10ths of people dont take their trucks off road as many manufacturers dont hold up their warranties off road.
Exactly I remember when these trucks first came out they were only 17k
My theory is that Gen X and Boomers are "downsizing" and have $$$. The price reflects that. My Frontier is the perfect size. My days of moving stoves and shit are done.
Toyota is #1!!!
Lol first thing I did when I got my 2018 gmc canyon was remove the snow plow (air dam)
The Frontiers, even the Pro4x, have air dams too. I removed mine as well.
bring back mini trucks
Z71 trailboss has been available for a while with the duramax as well!
