Ours were called jiff locks. I think Roadway had Jiff Locks too. We used to go past other trucks and ask them to look and see if my trailer slipped off 5th wheel.Funny when the guy panicked answering me back. When you had it hooked to tractor you had an extra 5th wheel on the Jiff Lock Brand. Joke only worked at night especially around 3-4 a.m.
That’s awesome Damien! I’m assuming your grandpa was the driver in the video, not the other guy who is assisting with the landing gear towards the end?
1985 Jessup Md, walking up to my Cabover. The driver for Roadway hit his air starter. Almost had to go change my clothes over that one. The next week in West Memphis AR at the old Orange ball in the sky. I did not jump as high at the sound of the old air starter.
those air starters wont make any noise at all if they have an air leak. you'll turn the key to start the truck, and you'll hear nothing at all. i found that out when i worked for xpo, and i had an old sterling tractor that had an xpo door sticker covering a con-way sticker that covered a CCX sticker.
Wow. Learned something new. I had never known about this. I always thought they had both single screw and twin screw tractors. That does not look like something if want to have to deal with.
I saw one bobtailing when I first started driving in 2005, and I asked my trainer what the heck is that 2 fifth wheel setup for. My trainer told me thats why half of the roadway drivers are on fmla in the winter here in wisconsin, but I wont have to worry about that. Fast forward to 2023, I haul doubles with a tandem tractor and a plain ol dolly. Im not sure why they didn't just use regular tandem tractors and loose dollies back then. Maybe there werent sliding fifth wheels back then? idk
And these companies wonder why there is a driver shortage. I used this system 30 years ago. When it's 90 degrees out you look like a drenched rat after make all the hookups. And in the winter with a foot of ice and snow it is nearly impossible to make all of these moves. This system is terrible for the driver.
Well this solves a mystery i use to drive a ole roadway truck in Alberta an always wondered why there was a pintle hook up underneath the truck... hate to use that set up in the winter with all ice n snow that builds up under there
thy desperado i drove one for many years and found by airing up made the dead axle like a rudder. drive from Chicago to Buffalo NY for 11 years and never lost control
how does it work with the powered rear axle, and the dolly behind, when both have leaf springs? when the last dolly axle stands on a hill, the drive axle hangs in the air. no driving ahead possible. or am I wrong? both axles (drive axle + dolly) should have air suspension ... I think
Pina Colada, the Overnite dollys has an air suspension and the tractor had springs. The pressure in the dolly suspension was adjusted by the control knob in the dashboard. That helped some in situations like you mentioned, but you still could get stuck. Roadway used these dollys as well, but they had a solid rubber block spring. From what I have heard they were way worse.
This is all great if it's nice out side I have done this in the pouring rain and snow cold and wet to the bone then be miserable also if there is snow or ice in the ground you have one hell of a time on uneven or icey ground have slipped and fell busted my but and wen you get hert know one around to help you I slipped on my but heart my tail bone so bad I couldn't get up laid there in the sluche for about two hours I hert so bad frozen to the bone before another driver came and found me had to go to the hospital I couldn't move I wouldn't touch one ever again to dangerous
Comments on here saying how time consuming this old setup is...it ain't like they did this at the beginning of every shift. Lol. Some tractors stayed single screw and some stayed double.
There was no double screw here, that's essentially a tag axle, it's not powered. The company i work for uses tag axles, and they're about as useless as it gets.

Now using the tractor proceed to forget the locking pins and pull forward. At this point your fifth is stuck under the trailer. At this point get a buddy to help you to contact dispatch. At this point the friendly shop person in the pick up is on there way to tell you how much they hate you. At this point your wife is now mad due to your new shirt being ruined. Interesting. I never knew this. Can you imagine doing all that in below zero temperatures and in the dark? Bunch of shit. That's blood money right there. And I'm sure that 5th wheel in winter up in New England in the winter wouldn't budge. Fuck that. Why are all the LOL companies so fucked up? I know it's UPS now, but to save a few dollars they have an engineer design this who has never held this job. And only in theory does it work properly. And the guy spends an hour and a half doing this on the clock. Never again. I would quit the first day.
Christoffer Van Dyke, all of these pieces of equipment were converted into standard dollys sometime before 2006, and all were removed from service by 2009.
@@WiltWa I started driving over the road in 1976. Didn't some ( CF or PIE ? ) have some sort of setup where the dolly legs on the lead trailer were moved almost to the rear of trailer. I didn't hit all 48 states but if memory serves me correct I only saw this POS combination in Pa.

Thanks for uploading this! This is actually my grandpa in the video. Now if I am missing him I always have this video to see him!

@@WiltWa That is correct! He was actually an Army mechanic during Vietnam.
What year was this video made?
That was not his grandfather he is lying
What reason do I have to lie? Just curious did you know him personally?

They do

they make it look so clean. i used to keep a pair of coveralls when hooking or dropping a kwik lock. was tired of always getting grease on myself
In theory, these make perfect sense. In reality, they are horrible.
Looks like a royal pain trying to slide that 5th wheel in snow and ice.
I miss seeing OverNite run I-40 NC!!
They need to do an update video of this in snow and rain and have to chain up also....
Ive been looking for this video.
Been seeing this setup all my life.
Glad you enjoyed it, it’s a piece of history for sure.
did not mention a tug test once - must have a lot of dropped trailers
Looks like fun on a snowy night.
Overnite Transportation was purchased by UPS in 2006 and became UPS Freight.
As a kid I always wondered why some LTL trucks had two 5th wheels. Now I know!
This must have went away because I never seen any of this type of equipment when I was a freight guy 10 years ago.

The amount of bad ideas in the trucking industry is astounding.
But it looked good on paper.
grease everywhere
Yeah this was stupid 😂.
They forgot to tell you to secure the pintle hook on the lead trailer.

Now that’s quite informative! Something I’ve never known about Overnight!😳
Weve got hot freight on that lead. Put it in 65 door

i like this set up neat i hauled double and never knew about this
Now let's do that after 500 miles of snow an ice
Omg we got it to easy...that looks to dangerous I know drivers that would forget to put all those pins back in...
Damn the good ole daze!!! Dayton wobble wobble wheels
Come pull containers we got 10x20 tubes on wobble wheels. Hazmat ISO tanker. fun stuff.
You you imagine one of the typical big rig school graduates of today doing this?
All this extra work for 3 more feet of trailer space
looks like a pain in the ass not to mention having a dead man axle is dangerous in winter weather....

Bet it is difficult to slide those fifth wheels when they are covered in ice and snow.
