In this #metalmonday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to the song Bad Company. First, we're going to the original version from Bad Company. Then, we're listening to the cover version by American heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch. I very much enjoyed listening to and noting the similarities and differences between these two recordings. Come along for the ride!

Yes it was. But I always felt Bad Company was a weaker version of Free. BC was slightly more pop oriented, but they were so much more successful than Free. I was there for their debut tour and it was awesome. Happy it worked out for them.

They did relatively simple songs with basic arrangements, but they knew what they did best, and stayed in between the lanes. Very pure British blues-influenced-rock. Very different from Led Zeppelin, which is probably why LZ wanted them on their own Swansong label.

This is the song that first got me interested in FFDP. They have done some other great covers: "blue on black" ( Kenny Wayne Shepard ) , "Gone away" ( Offspring ), " House of the rising sun" . They also have a lot of great original songs: "Wrong side of heaven", "Never enough", "Wash it all away", "the bleeding", "Jekyll and Hyde", "Got your six" and many more.

Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke were in a band called Free before they formed Band Co. You really must have a listen to Free, with Paul Kossoff on guitar, Andy Fraser on bass. Still one of my favourite albums to this day, "Fire and Water", includes their famous song, "All Right Now". Please check out the title track or Mr. Big, but there isn't a bad track on the album. You will not be disappointed!

Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs was originally a founding member of Mott the Hoople. MTH was a rather schizophrenic band for their first four albums, alternating songs and vocals between Ralphs and Ian Hunter. When Bowie became involved for "All the Young Dudes," he encouraged Hunter to become the focal point/leader of the band. It was Ralphs' frustration over this that in part led to his leaving MTH to form Bad Co with Paul Rodgers. The other reason, which was well publicized at the time, was that Ralphs had written the song "Can't Get Enough" (which became Bad Co's first hit), but found that neither he nor Hunter had the range to sing it.

    Hi Doug!
Title tracks of eponymous albums... I'm familiar with 3... Black Sabbath, Bad Company and Iron Maiden... The B-52s self titled debut had a song called 52 Girls and Focus missed the boat by naming their album Focus Plays Focus (In and Out of Focus for international release) which opens and closes with Focus (instrumental) and Focus (vocal version) respectively... but that's neither here nor there.
Bad Company was what we call a Super Group with its line-up culled from previously successful bands... Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke from Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and Boz Burrell from King Crimson. Their debut album was the first album released on Led Zeppelin's new Swan Song label.
Rock 'n' Roll Westerns are few and far between... some being Desperado by Alice Cooper, Doolin' Dalton and Desperado by The Eagles, Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan, Bad Company by Bad Company, I Feel like a Bullet (in the Gun of Robert Ford) by Elton John, Silver Dollar [a personal favorite] by April Wine, Blaze of Glory and Wanted: Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi and, of course, Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles!
And thus ends another episode of Trivial Trivia with Max :)
    Cheers!

So over the years ive see 5FDP 5 times(ironically) ...twice as the headline act …I can say I saw “Bad Company” before the studio version came out … I loved the original and I love the cover … Ivan Moody was part of the local rock scene in Denver for a good while before making it in Vegas …and is a great vocal talent … as the band evolved from covers like this & “House of the Rising Sun” …songs like “The Bleeding” “The Pride” “Remember Everything” really established their sound … then as they became a headliner, songs like “Wrong Side of Heaven” and more recent songs “A Little Bit Off” and another outstanding set of covers “Gone Away” & “Blue on Black” became digital media performance staples … 5FDP is defiantly worth checking out for the story telling video presentations with meaningful / emotional lyric and vocals that brings songs to another level!!
