I was born 87 years ago and raised on a farm in Illinois. My Dad farmed with horses for years. I owned a team of Ponies and used them for pulling contests. So I enjoyed watching your horse pullings. I am amazed at the hard work you people do. Your way of life brings back a lot of great memories. Thank you for giving this old man something to look forward too.

@@meandmybuddy964 If they don't have hay fever, I can think of little that would toughen up a 12-16-year-old boy more than buckin' hay bales. Turns you from a boy into a man in one season. We had a kicker bailer, so most of the labor was getting the bales from the wagon into the loft. We still had to run around picking up stray bales that missed the wagon. Kicker bailers can be temperamental.
The big kids (15 and over) could throw bales. The smaller kids (14 and under) could stack them. My 1st year, I was the smallest, so they put me on the tractor or the pickup, depending on how many bales we had to pick up in the field by hand. One of the privileges of being on a farm is learning how to operate anything with a motor and wheels.
There were saddle horses and cattle around, but pretty much all the farming was mechanized in the '70s.

My father has just turned 84. He shared this video in our family app. He remembered that his oldest brother also put the horse not straight for the cart when It was an extremily heavy load, because only 2 wheels have to be moved instead of four initialy. That got the job done and got the cart moving. So this brought back memories for him. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Back in the late 70's, I worked for an old N. Dakota rancher that had a half brother/sister team of blue roan Belgians. As mother nature had a hissyfit of a winter, including a record setting blizzard the likes of which he'd never seen in his prior 40 years of ranching, he taught me how to hitch & drive the team and his old sled. That's how we fed the cattle all winter. A GREAT experience!

This brought back many memories of working on the farm as a child. It's great to see work horses still in use today. I noticed from 3:48 to 5:00 the horses were fighting off biting flies. That explains the back legs making several attempts to shew the flies off their belly. And why the tails were swishing from side to side. They're strapped in harnesses & had limited ability to keep the flies off of themselves. We would spray the horse's to keep many of the flies off. Then wash the repellant off with cool water at the end of the day, which they loved. Even with the biting flies, the horses look very happy.

Beautiful horses, beautiful farm, beautiful summer day, beautiful girls...... what's not to like?
Being and speaking as an old farmer, retired, who caught the very tail end of the horse and mule era as a child, because my grand parents kept the horses and mules for old times sake, and worked them a few days a year....... after switching to tractors and trucks even before I was born.........
Well, the thing not to like is that you have to care for horses, feed them, check on them, EVERY SINGLE DAY of the year.
When you don't need the tractor, you park it in the shed, and don't have to feed it with diesel or gasoline again until you need it again..... maybe weeks and sometimes even months later.
And you can work the tractor twenty two hours a day......... day after day............ with two hours set aside for maintenance work..... assuming you have two beautiful girls to take turns running it, lol.

I didn't grow up on a farm but my cousins did and we visited them often. I wished that we could trade places but they laughed and said I wouldn't if I had to get up at the crack of dawn and start the daily chores. Anyway, this brings me back to what a family farm is really like with everybody pitching in. Thanks.

When I was a little kid horses, wagons and pitchforks were in use, as well as many helping hands. Then came the tractors and bailers. We got to take turns driving the tractor which gave us a break from throwing bales onto the wagon. I always liked the horses better than the tractors as they were more like us. Even sweated like us, and glad to finish at the end of the day.

If I knew enough about horses I could start a draft horse revolution here in Portugal. I can see all those blacksmiths opening shop again. What a pleasant dream I have on my small piece of land.

My earliest memory at 2 yrs old was holding the reins on top of the logging wagon gathering firewood with the men of the family. Grandad actually led the Shires but I pretended it was me in charge. Never lost the love of working horses some 70 years later. Still bring a lump to my throat. Cheers from Wales, UK.

Very nice family participation, all with good skills and admirable personality. The family and horses work so well together; always a pleasure to watch these videos which remind me of similar activities when I worked on farms in northwestern Illinois.

Reminds me of the good old days when everything was a much slower pace. No tractor noise or smells. Just a quiet time with the horses. I remember picking corn by hand and putting screens over the horses noses so they couldn't eat the corn as the went through the field. Tied the lines up to the wagon and just used voice command to control the team.

“Family” “dad” “girls” , “mom” …..all so refreshing to hear today with all the BS on the go. And I’m sure someone will protest something lol. Thx for the nice visuals.

Great job guys. Like seeing the colts in more video's. Although is seams routine to you, I'd love to see more of the prep and finish with the horses.

Great to see this family work together ,and I love their horses! When I was a young lad I would sit and watch friends work with horses and plow with their miles!

Beautiful daughters and Wife Jim, this is so great to see the old school Horse Logging and Farming carried on. I miss the days of Horse Logging with the Amish people. My Dad worked with their Dad, so that was the connection. They used Clydesdale and Belgium, and they were impressive! They were great around the saw too, not spooky or anything... Great channel Jim ! Holla from Vermont...
