  • Today my daughter Abby stopped to help me hauling logs from the woods with the draft horses! I did some logging earlier so we are using two teams to bring the loads of logs to the sawmill. Abby is using the Percheron team, Ken & Buck, and Jim is using the Belgian team, Lady & Bill.
    Check out my daughter Abby's channel (A Drill & A Dream) ► / @adrilladream
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    It is really nice listening to the directions being told to the Horses. My Mom was 1 of 12 kids. They grew up working the fields and knowing how the commands of right, left or what they need them to do. I was raised on a ranch in California with around 700 acres. We did not use horses for work but we had 40 head of horses. Enjoyed your videos horses are what you teach them.

    This stands out as a wonderful video. Very good job of filming Brenda, beautiful scenery and well composed. It still never fails to amaze me as to how the horses behave, a lot like giant puppy dogs. I was surprised how they came running when Jim called them. Again, this video was a great compilation of low afternoon light and great surroundings. Well done! Thank you.

    Good afternoon from The Land of the Waxhaws, NC. Watching your channel brings back my memories of when I was 14 and working for a loose hay farmer. He had a team of "Browns," and at nearly six feet, at first, I had a hard time throwing the harness up over their backs. But I loved working with them and took to it like a barn fly to a cow. I used them to cut hay, ted or side delivery depending on whether the horse owner was going to bail or load the loose hay, in which case we hooked a loader behind the wagon. There was a real art to "mowing" the hay on the wagon and again in the hay loft. Again, we used the horses to pull the hay up from the wagon and into the barn. It was my job to set the fork and his to drive the horses to lift the hay We cleaned the barn using horses, spread the manure, dredged the creek and a million other things, all using horsepower. One thing I learned about horses they were a whole lot smarter than a tractor and cost a whole lot less than the maintenance and gas to keep a tractor going. As they grew to know me, they'd do their darndest to please me, and when out loose in the field, they'd come to me as soon as they saw me. Of course, I might have a couple of apples in my pockets or some carrots. Your videos sure stir up some good memories of back when I was but a slip of a kid and always hungry. p.r.morehouse - author

    I find it hard to believe that cars don't slow right down when passing horses. Here in UK we slow right down to a walking pace and wait until the person in charge of the horse tells us its okay too very slowly pass them. 🐎

      @alangknowles 2 года назад +7

      Very true. But we don't tend to use horse teams for logging and haulage like Jim and Abby were.
      Perhaps motorists are more used to it in Amish areas and they assume the horses are less skittish near vehicles.
      It made me nervous just watching.
      I have noticed that the new highway code has made cars slow down a lot more near bicyclists (and I suppose horses) - even taxidrivers are obeying the changes.

    • @momclean

      Oh yes on respect for horses on the roads... it's scary, and dangerous for cars to drive at speed passing horses.
      As a horse owner/rider/ driver, I would take the vehicle number and report it to police...

    • @momclean
      @momclean 2 года назад +4

      @@alangknowles horses came before cars...vehicles don't have the sole rights to moving on roads..
      I suppose there are still people long- training horses on roads - horses learning road work for driving etc..yes even in UK.
      I lived on Dartmoor and used to walk miles training horses/ponies on roads, most car drivers were cautious - there are idiots everywhere though!

    Great trip down and back. scenic, just the sounds alone are enough for me. the sounds of the hoofs on the pavement and roads. the clink and clank of the agons. and Brenda ? those Gassy sounds were "Aeronautical propulsion" from ken and Buck to help move the load of logs a little easier. And nice job of backing in the cart Abby. not an easy task to do in one shot. Also that Tight turn after you dropped the wagon off. Ken and Buck probably could have done it on their own. they've done so many tight turns like that in the woods they are well versed in them. great video all way round thanks for taking us along. and I am following your Drill and a dream Abby. thanks all! God speed. ECF.

      Yes!, we need to light off the afterburner fuel methane. Ah ha.😄
      Yes! That turn sharp and like the hay rake, negative turn radius, John deere don't even have that..
      They don't need much space, good training, but like Jim says can catch the tire and flip over, he(also Abby), make it look easy.. don't retire Buck yet, hopefully Buck will be able to spend some time with the young bucks b4 he hangs up his shoes.

    And you are an excellent driver of a team of horses and my sister‘s goal her has been a fan of Percherons for many years! She owns horses and really wants to own a Percheron it’s not too but I never understood it until I started watching your videos. She always said they were very gentle and I never believed her but I am short and tiny and she’s more like you and you’re such a skilled horse man and I love the relationship you have with your father… I was very close w/ My Dad, and I thought it was so sweet how he got down off of his wagon and came up to you and gave you very specific instructions telling you what he wanted you to do with regards to going down that hill and making sure you understood how to protect yourself first and then the horses second. It just brought tears to my eyes that he loved you so much, that you were going to be first in his life over the horses.❣️❣️❣️And we both know the value of those horses ❣️❣️ I love hearing the sound of the hooves on the road and in the barn, as you were driving, and also backing up! Plus, I was so amazed at how well you backed up into the barn was barely even turning around! You did it was such confidence❣️❣️❣️❣️♥️♥️ so proud of you ♥️♥️ANN!!
    I love the little kitten… Tiger stripes not so much his name back I’m sorry you don’t get to keep it for yourself because it was an adorable face and he definitely likes you💕💕It is wonderful to see you working with your Dad and the wonderful relationship you have together❣️❣️ mine father has been gone 22 years approximately and I miss him every day as well as our relationship. I knew I was special to him even though there were 12 children in our family and that was no one else closer to him than me. He was careful not to show favoritism but I worked with him just like you are your father and did things that nobody else was willing to do with him and he would take those times to Tell me how much she appreciated me and he would use those times also to teach me and to this day, I value those times so very much!!!!
    Thank you for your Mom and you making these videos, because I don’t think that if the two of you weren’t doing it, we would not get to see the beauty of your land, the horses, and the special work that you do on your farm because I think your dad is much like my father call mom and that the workload was already heavy enough that he didn’t have time to pick up a camera and take on one more thing and wasn’t going to start talking to a little box LOL some of my most prized possessions either one that are the videos the old fashion VCR type of our family at the holidays and my dad is playing games with us on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day… And he was so intimidated by that camera… One evening we were playing charades and he was definitely out of his element but I look back on those and I love them. I hope to give all of my siblings a DVD of the copies of our family and I know the dynamics of our siblings and Grandchildren, as well as deceased siblings and family members will be different but that is part of my family and so they can you’re fast forward or throw it away if they want but I don’t think they will do that. It is a way of having our parents and grandparents, visually live due to virtual internet, for a few hours. You guys will look back on these videos for years to come. I thank you for sharing them with all of us and especially for sharing a part of history that is long past.
    I cannot believe how long those logs are but your dad cuts and then puts him up in his barn and turns them into lumber. I am amazed and his strength😊❣️❣️❣️❣️.
    One question I have is, what does he eat throughout the day? Does he drink a super power drink to help him cope or does he Just drink coffee like my parents did? Thank you again for this wonderful video and until next time, God bless and my prayers are always with you guys and your safety if you work with the horses! Great job and driving the team down that hill, Ann❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️😊😊

    Nice job going down the hill! The ride through the woods and the sunset are beautiful images.
    Our rescue kitten was quite interested in "possibly Henry." My son's buddy heard this little guy crying in a bank parking lot in the middle of the night on August 12. He was only about 7 or 8 weeks old, fully weaned but only recently. We're not positive how he got there, since it's in a shopping mall district and not really near houses. Anyway, we had just been talking about getting a kitten because it had been nearly 2 years since our feral rescue died. That one was an older street cat that was severely injured. We only had him 3 years before he succumbed to the effects of his hard life on the streets. This kitten looks just like him -- orange! Different colored eyes though. My son called him Apollo because he's a little ray of sunshine 🌞 (Apollo was the Greek god of the sun). It's so nice having a kitten around and watching him develop and learn. I understand why landlords rarely allow pets, but it's still kinda sad to not be able to have one. Hopefully it won't be too long before Abby can move into her own place and be the one who decides if pets are allowed or not!
    I enjoyed this video as always 💕🐎😺

    In my old Farm and Ranch magazine the farmers put branches in the draft horses bridles to repel flies. Plants that repel flies: basil, Lavender, rosemary, mint or bay laurel. Wonder if you have tried that?
