John Cena Was Absolutely Crazy

- John Cena was absolutely crazy. Before Cena was the PG billboard we all grew to hate, he was the leader of the chain gang. And for many, this was their favorite version of Cena. The carefree, no F's given outlaw who just came out to entertain the masses. In his earliest days, John Cena was coming out on a weekly basis getting some of the loudest boo's on the roster. But as time wore on he started to capture the audience's attention with his authenticity. What made him so much fun was he came out and he said inappropriate words and shook things up. By 2004 the Cena character was one of the hottest on the roster and less than a year after winning the US title he became the WWE champion, going on to change the title's look, continuing his crusade, and racking up wins against the best on the WWE roster. It was mid-2006 when he ran into Chris Jericho and the crowd started to sour on Cena. Many fans thought that he was not what the companies "top guy" should be. But he was still growing WWE & his own brand. Coming out with movies, an album, performances on RAW. In this video, we take a look back at thuganomics & chaingang John Cena.-

Man, Cena was on another level during the Ruthless Aggression Era compared to the PG Era. TV-14 really does bring out the best out of characters. I really hope WWE goes back to TV-14 one day.
I wish WWE was TV-14 to😔
Cena was on Smackdown on UPN during almost the entirety of his Thuganomics gimmick and that show was always rated PG. The way they did it back then was that Raw was live and rated TV 14 and Smackdown was taped and was rated PG. Smackdown was somewhat edgy with Torrie, Sable, Cena etc.. but they would just beep certain words whereas they didn't beep anything on RAW.
Imagine Tribal Chief Reigns with a TV 14 Rating
@@CharlesHitmanStone imagine roman in the attitude era
Highly unlikely considering most of their audience is young
this man is single-handedly responsible for probably one of the top grossing items in all of wwe history:

The Dr. Of Thuganomics is definitely on my Top5 greatest characters of all time.
Who r the other 4
It could be top 1 because John Cena's Mic Skills back then in 2003-2004 he's on a whole Universal Level. John Cena is The GOAT for me. The Real Dr Thuganamics John Cena is Just Untouchable. Everytime he come out he would get a huge pop back on his Dr Thuganamics Days.
Cena Dr of thuganomics gimmick along with Eddie Guerrero lie chest and steal gimmick where the best of the ruthless aggression era
He went from hated to loved back to hated and then got recognition for the legend he is. Seriously, I was never a fan of John Cena growing up, but as I got older I could appreciate his contributions to the sport I've loved since I was a kid. It's just... WWE doesn't feel the same without him there. Which is what I'm sure you Attitude Era watchers said about Austin.
FYI I was a Jeff Hardy fan when I was a kid. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the time when Jeff was catching fire.
Austin is lucky cena wasn’t around during attitude era
Same I would paint my face and cut up panty hose to make the wristbands every Monday or Friday
Haha I love the “nobody else was allowed to cheer for Cena except me” part because I was totally that guy too. He came around at just the right time for me, I was preaching Thuganomics to anyone who would listen in early 2003 when I was 13 and he instantly became my favourite guy. My little group of wrestling friends at the time were having none of it because he was a heel. As soon as he turned later on in the year and his popularity started to rise they jumped on the bandwagon and I was having none of it 😂 great stuff, man. Cena will always be my GOAT. 🐐
Well said right here

@@grandcanyon-fu9zt no, not even close tbh
I have a feeling that Rhea Ripley is gonna be the next breakout star. She's got what it takes to be the biggest name in wrestling since Cena.
I think even up to 06 he was doing well and most people still cheered, he put over Edge and RVD when he had to, he was getting much better in the ring, especially at psychology and storytelling. Maybe the problem was that he was always the go-to guy for Vince McMahon. Eddie, Benoit and Umaga dead, Jericho gone for a couple of years, Batista, Undertaker, Edge injured at different points, Orton and RVD were suspended...and Vince went with Cena every time rather than pushing someone else, possibly younger. That got him heat and WWE going PG made things worse. Everything he did until his feud with The Rock got him more and more heat. Then he put over Daniel Bryan, he left for a while, he had a bump on the road with the Wyatt Family (he should have lost that one), but after being destroyed by Brick Lesnar, after the feud with Rusev, the US title open challenge, the series of matches against AJ Styles in 2016 and early 2017, the feuds with The Miz and with Roman Reigns... he's been gold again. He shows up every few months, he has a few great matches and he's now John Cena the Legend, not the Dr. Of Thuganomics, the Chain Gang, the Marine or the kid friendly Cena but all of them. Even his harshest critics admit he's actually good, kinda miss him and recognize he has a positive influence on the product.
People keep trying to push the narrative cena was massively hated even though the ratings show otherwise. I guess these are the same people who mindlessly hate on Roman still also.
@@KnucklesWTD what do the ratings have to do with Cena getting booed? Cena wasn't the only guy on the roster that was popular back then. Also way more households had cable back then
He was getting boo’d 3 months after winning the title

You don’t realize that WWE has a loyal fan base th at will put up with anything. They hate cena and reigns. They do. They just put up with it. There is a reason ratings are new better than they had been in a decade.

In the ruthless aggression era, his raps were great and the perfect reason to watch WWE. A few of them were on WWE's RUclips channel not so long ago and they got taken down one by one. I was a city boy growing up in downtown Jersey city. Short, Puerto Rican white boy that loved hip-hop. Eminem was my favorite rapper. My dad dressed me in rockawear, ecko jean shorts, & those hot brands during that time & 2000’s rap was soarin’. I’m a kid, growing up in this culture.
Then, Here comes Cena, white dude battle rapping, fitteds & snapbacks, chains, ecko jean shorts, Reebok pumps, baggy clothes, & repping G-Unit! G-unit was down with 50 Cent, 50 was synonymous with Eminem & I loved Eminem!! Cena quickly became my favorite wrestler, & when the first Smackdown vs Raw came out, I really got hooked on Cena, as he was who I always played with.
Cena with the spinner belt, Cena then little by little started going marine status, & I loved it!! I loved the military tribute Cena. I loved Cena speaking so powerful, with his “whether you love me or you hate me I am here for the WWE universe” speeches he would open the nights with. Or his quotes like “hustle loyalty respect” & “never give up” / “rise above hate”.
For me, he was genuine, he was a hero. & many hated him for that. Many thought him to be too cheesy and boring by that time. & when he was Super Cena they claimed he “buried” talent…. But we all saw the shift & change of heart in the fans once it was obviously apparent that Cena had left the building & moved to focus more on acting. Only then was when I saw more and more people, miss & appreciate John Cena…
Cena is forever my childhood & my favorite wrestler hands down. I resonated with him from the beginning. Hustle. Loyalty. Respect

When Cena came out I was in Junior High. Kinda like 6 months after W21 (and sure before the Edge feud), I remember finding a Myspace page with an old school WWE fan who did an parody album of John Cena basically making a diss track of each song in his album.
It was nuts for me because:
1. It was one of the first times I saw someone being this creative being a hater on the internet
2. Also teach me that not everyone liked Cena (which was crazy to me since it was the baby face)
I seriously wish I could go back and get those tracks, there were the purest form of internet content.

I know cena is having the best time of his life currently in Hollywood with suicide squad and f9 success but before he retires I just want him to win the wwe title one more time...For those persons who think he dosen't deserve it I have to say you are idiots, no offense but ric flair cheated almost all his title wins whereas cena carried the company on his backs for over a decade and won every title fight fair and square as one of the greatest face in the company
Honestly Roman reigns is only getting pushed because he’s family to the rock
Even Ric Flair himself want Cena to break his record.
Yes i agree Cena is the only one that should break Flair's record
Bro you had a whole villain backstory at 7😭
Even though he was never my number 1 guy and or even in my top 10 personal favorites, I was apart of the Chain Gang back in the day and even up to 2012/13 wanted him him to succeed really and was behind him Kayfabe wise.
I will continually maintain that Cena's overall Peak in Pro Wrestling was truly from 2005-2007. Before hand he was more if a fan favorite but wasn't really a main eventer and past that point until 2013-15 he was void of what he was and just super powered boring etc in most cases.
In 2005-2007 while their were plenty of others he still had most of the crowds mostly with him, had probably his best most memorable feuds and moments, was still pretty aggressive with his clothing and way he went about things and 2006 as whole was probably his biggest Year overall, made HHH tape out at Mania, ECW One Nightstand, feud with Edge throughout, the Marine in theaters and ending the Year going unto his 380 Day long reign.
Honestly you can throw 2008 in their too. It wasn't really until around 2009 Post Mania 25 where he became Fruity Pebbles Super Cena
Thanks to Stephanie…..
we got The GOAT Cena!!!!!
Man I remember having the pump shoes. I thought I was the shit 😂😂😂.
This Cena was perfect and it was just the perfect time!! Every teenager just wanted to be a cool guy like john cena and then when he became the typical face cena, all we teenagers thought "Oh he is not cool anymore " and we always rooted agains him We have become a little bit older too and we began to appreciate guys like Y2J or Kurt Angle and what happened? He beat them all. His first few years on smack down where just epic. And from 2006 or 2007 on we just hated him. But now looking back, this time was just epic. It wasn't like it is today. Today it is like "his booking is bad, oh we blame vince!" in the past it was like: "F... Cena is winning all the time, we hate you cena, just lose!!!!"
I was there when Cena's popularity took off, I remember him being in these ridiculous shorts fighting against Kurt Angle and getting respect from The Undertaker too. Stephanie was there on the right time and Cena saved his own career with doing a freestyle AND having somebody like Steph taking a liking in it. What's even more funnier to me is that Cena got stabbed by Jesus (sent by Carlito) because he was celebrating that title win. Looking back it was attempted murder but you see Jesus walking around like it was nothing 🤣
As a kid back then I was like "DAMN... is Cena okay!? Carlito is not playing around if he sends his bodyguard to kill somebody like Cena, holy crap!!", now I'm an adult (30 years old) and gotta laugh like crazy about that angle.
It was really funny what Cena did, you could tell that he was really going off in that gimmick. I just didn't like the transition to the Hustle, Loyalty and Respect thing. Basically Super Cena. That's where I started disliking him. Super Cena / Marine Cena was involved in many veeeerrrry questionable decisions over time. Some angles were fire, many of them were just eh in the long run and overall. He definitely is one of the greatest dudes. He made the US title pretty interesting to watch back then imho. Word Life Cena is just built different, literally. Like the video said, you can't pull that off today. So I am glad that I was there to witness all the wild and crazy ish at the right time. I was too young to understand it fully but I'm glad that I can go back watching that stuff and comprehend what happened in my childhood and teenager years. Good times, good times....
"I sat there and I knew my time was up"
😂😂💀
As a Indian I can confirm all of the things he said about his parents
I think it would absolutely be legendary if Cena came back a heel and started doing attitude era like stuff to send him into the sunset with the 17 wwe championships.

When we got 7 minutes into the vid I learned a lot about Superkick Studios.
You forgot to mention: He released a REAL decent rap album. Some of those track still slaps. But yea his cultural impact was great. I'm a little older so I remember Steve Austin having more of rebellious impact. So many times my classmates at the time would flip the double bird in teacher's faces...bashing two pepsi's/coke's together and downing the foam. Whenever they set out a table for a bake sale...it only last for about one lunch period as someone would always get sent through said table. But Cena's mainstream and cross platform appeal was amazing, especially in the transition to the pg era.

i love how everyone talks about how the wwe spinner belt looks like a toy compared to the one they use now the spinner belt at least there was some money spent on it the belts they use now not only look like toys but they look like they were about 40 bucks a piece
I don't get why people hate the WWE Spinner Belt (WWE title and the US title), both belts have nice credibility, creativity, and lots of value (using jewelry). The modern belts looks so generic, bland and boring, no creativity whatsoever.
What toys have diamonds on them, it’s a stupid argument
The spinner belt is a gaudy piece of garbage. I figured at the time that it would be similar to Stone Cold's belt that was personalized to him and it was just a temporary gimmick like the US spinner was but then when Cena lost the title and whoever beat him kept the spinner, thats where it got ridiculous. Made no sense in kayfabe for them to stick with that ridiculous looking belt, they clearly just wanted to sell them to kids. Winged Eagle belts and the big gold looked like real championships and had an air of prestige to them.
