'Horns Surrounding Me' was the very first track of Julia I've ever heard and fell in love with it immediately, mostly because of these overwhelming horns.
man, i'm loving this Julia Holter album! as with scores of other albums over the last two or so years I've been watching the needle drop, thanks again for doing what you do (and doing it incredibly well - easily the most articulate person i watch on youtube: and John Green's meant to be a writer, so props there) and introducing me to music i'd of otherwise probably not come across. give Cal a kick from me. forever.
Thanks to your review of this album, I am now hooked! I never really paid Julia Holter any mind when Ekstasis came out or any of her other releases before that, but I really love her musical aesthetic and surreal writing that's very narrative. Thanks for reviewing a great album Anthony :-) Speaking of pop music, I would be very thankful if you would review the new Pure Bathing Culture album, it came out a few weeks ago, but its still fresh
Loving the new format, man! Keeps things fresh! One thing I miss though, is the song bit at the end. Like you said about this album, there needs to be some closure! Anyways, great work Anthony, keep it up!
Light 9 from me, might be the best record I've heard this year, only contested by the album featured as my profile picture. But I think the best track is Horn's Surrounding Me. It's just so, can I say cohesive? Well, it's paranoid and engaging. I also like how the album isn't very conventional in song structure. It fits what I see as the theme of the record, but now we're getting abstract. and you already reviewed everything I wanted you to, so good day.
I enjoy your reviews. They're well thought out, and it seems you always try to see the positive. I suggest reviewing Populuxxe by Cutting Pink with Knives. It's a very diverse album, which encompasses a range of genres, and if even if you don't like it, you'll find it somewhat interesting.
I think the upright bass and the horns make it less dreamy for A, whereas the earlier releases have had more layers of keyboards as instrumentation, although I agree with you when it comes to the dreamy aspect.
I agree; it's pretty common for that to happen to female musicians in general. However, I think her song "He's Running Through My Eyes" is somewhat similar to KB's "The Man with the Child In His Eyes" (Fantano showed the album cover of The Kick Inside also) and Julia Holter's vocals are lighter and pretty high pitch in a similar way of KB.
Although her most of songs are calm, there is a lot of emotion in it, like in World or He's Running Through My Eyes. I also like her experimentation, like in This is a True Heart or Horns Surrounding Me, but wasn't too pleased with Maxim's II.
Dude, I could watch videos of you reviewing turds every week. You are awesome. Your reviews are funny and refreshing. And you do the music scene a huge favor/labor. Freakin awesome. Keep it up.
Perhaps emotion was the wrong word - more like feeling. I need to feel something in order to be attached to the music, be it reminding me of a place (the ocean) or actual emotions (joy, anger). Without something that tethers me to the music, something that sucks me into the world it tries to create, that vital attachment isn't there. Experimentation is important to find new ways to express different emotions and keep things interesting, but I feel it hides more than it reveals here.
I totally respect your opinion, I'd just like to hear why is transmitting emotions should come first? As a bad poet i myself focus on transmitting emotions, but I don't think focusing on experimentation is any less valuable, or makes something indulgent. Art is Art
Review Rejjie Snows 'Rejovich' and King Krule's '6 feet under the moon' please, I would love to hear your opinion, I think theyre both pretty good and different
Cal and Anthony have different length hairstyles today. I think Cal is finally realising that he doesn't really need Anthony to survive. Power to you, Chuchesta.
Man. I still feel there's nothing stopping me in my tracks about this album either. Horns Surrounding Me is great, but half of it feels awkward and blows over my head. I *should* like Holter's music, I know I should, but I don't feel the city aesthetic at all here, and I felt even less on Ekstasis. I feel like I'm in the minority, but what can I do? 5/10 for me.
arguably a perfect album

loud city song is about a fantastical night! the ending is the commencement of dawn.. of course it lends to an openness

Great review! Thanx for bringing my attention on this amazing album, once again!

Loved your Cal dis track at the start, it felt somehow both harsh and richly deserved
Best album in recent months for me. So inspiring.

hi anthony. i know they're a little old now, but can you please review "slave vows" by the icarus line, and possibly "to the happy few" by medicine?
Dude, I could watch videos of you reviewing turds every week. You are awesome. Your reviews are funny and refreshing. And you do the music scene a huge favor/labor. Freakin awesome. Keep it up.
Also I like how Anthony just chucked a bigger shirt over the black one he wore for the Doris review.
