Rebuilding My First Bike : Retro GT

- I'm doing a slightly different style of video this week. I've been watching a lot of restoration videos from Tysytube and My Mechanics and I like their lack of music and voice over with simple text graphics. I thought I'd see if I could do something similar.
@TysyTube
@mymechanics
As for the subject matter, I'm really pleased to be building with this frame as it's something I've wanted to do for years, it's handy that a lot of people seem to have been bitten by the retro bug or have come back into riding after a long break and are dusting off the old bikes, I'm hoping this video will be of interest :)
I had most of the parts needed but I did need a couple of things. The forks were kindly donated by Danny Macaskill, tartybikes.co.uk provided the spokes and Ebay got me the rim and nicknacks.
I'm yet to ride it but I can't wait to give it a try!
What do you think? Also tan or black tyres?
Thanks for watching!

Restomodding older frames with newer components is an amazing thing, glad people are doing more of it.
Love the Sam Pilgrim reference
Sam would have used a brick
@@morgannnnn3020 pff more likely a car battery
@@zygis337 Let's be honest; Pilgrim's car battery is also probably a brick
He's such a sick rider is sam
Pilgrim uses his driveway as file
i love how it’s just the bike being built with no talking. it’s very refreshing. Plus the text you added in just puts me in a good mood
“I didn’t have a spare straight steerer fork”
“But Danny did”
“Now I do”
This had me cracking up Ali 😂🤣😂🤣
No Danny doesn't!
Ali Clarkson thank you so much for the pin
When the headset was being smashed into the frame, the RUclips subtitles algorithm decided it was [Music]. And it was right!
Who watches with subtitles
Just joking i have nothing against title people
@@dawidgacek4764 a lot of people don't have the same capabilities to hear things that you do
All I heard was my stomach turn.
A shittyer job seemed unimaginable, until I saw him "stress" the spokes 😖
Loll when he was putting in the bb after he said the threads are still good it counted that noise as an applause which was appropriate for the condition of the threads.
@@surreal6670 Good luck building a strong wheelset without bedding in the spokes. Of course, you could just not stress them, then deal with re-truing your wheel every week.
I wish I could smash the like button harder. This was one of your most enjoyable videos I’ve watched yet. Loved the jokes during the quiet relaxing build. And such a cool build. Well done 😎
Yes but i think better if he read the text
My first mtb was a GT too! It was some steel rigid bike, but still heaps of fun, and it got me hooked on mtb.
Looks more like a "go get a beer with buddies jumping around on the way to the bar" than a trials bike. Amazing vid bro
Amazing video! I’m 17 years old and I very like to watch bike’s restoration videos! Thank you very much
Love the video Ali! I don't ever comment but I had to because I'm also rebuilding my first bike, a 1995 GT Zaskar as of this week! Cheers!
1999 GT Tempest for me, Was going to only use my spares box just to get it up and running but the frame came up so pretty im now going for a thought out setup, 3x9 with the view of maybe going 1x9 in the future, XT rear derailleur(spares box front cos possible future 1x9) independent shifter and brake levers, Blue Kevlar cables, blue rear brake booster on V brakes with cartridge pads, front disc(crappy mechanical from the spares box just now but will be hydrolic soon) , might go for hydrolic front and rear rim brakes, dont know, depends how good the current setup proves to be, its certainly been a lot of fun thinking about instead of just simply bolting on whatever fits from the box, hope you have as much fun with yours.
I love the finished bike. I can't help thinking about the patina you lost with it. Every bit of glue residue, scratched decals and the flames all told a tale. I
The GT is fulfilling its biking destiny! Great vid, Ali - can't wait to see it out on the street.
I loved this video. I have an old 1995 GT Backwoods I built into a tourer. It was far too small but I still took it round the Middle East and Iceland. She’s finally retired in the garage but I was pleased to add more memories to her life..... I love your GT and I get your attachment to it!
I've always wanted to use a half links instead of full master links to get the fit just right on my single speed. They sell individual links, but I'd just buy a whole chain and then I'd have a bunch of links. Super cool to see a single speed build like this. Really awesome to see freewheels like that too.
This is really well-done. I like how, unlike a lot of bike restorers, you use new parts rather than old stuff you have lying around or searched out. I have a 1999 GT Rebound,, which is loaded with sentimental value but has seen much better days. I was ready to say goodbye until I found how difficult it is to get hold of a new bike right now, and at wildly inflated prices. I don't know a thing about building bikes, though, and so I am hesitant to try this. Anyway, thanks for adding to my knowledge store. Never saw your other videos, but my vote is for no music in every case.
Oh i hust happened to have a brand new hope bb that fits behind the sofa 🤣🤣🤣
Nobody...
Ali: oh, just found an inspired hex behind the sofa, oh well
Aloha Ali, back around 2000 or so I visited a friend in Lake Tahoe and his spare bike was that bike give or take a year but with 1-2" front travel. I rode that and others has new full sus bikes and I hammered the downhill and kept up they were shocked! Love GT's I have my childhood 1983 20" GT Pro frame and fork right now sitting in my living room. 🤙
Yes! I'm a huge fan of My Mechanics and you Ali!
Nothing like bringing an old bike back to life!
Loving the build. 1997 was all about my Dawes and dirt jumps. Never thought you would hear they eh? Could never have afforded a gt back then. Great to keep the memories alive!!
What kind of fertilizer do you use in your garden to get hubs like that?
@@Ali_Clarkson Noice bike mate ! (I would definitely love some of those special seeds to plant in my backyard who knows maybe will grow something..) ;0)
Stay healthy & Ride safely !
Oh man loved the retro rebuild video. I could watch them all day long. Nice one mate. I’m looking forward to seeing you putting it through it’s paces.
I have to start playing this video before bed... asmr for people who like bikes and tinkering with them. Tan wall tires for sure.
Very good aluminium bike frame. I currently ride on one.
When i found that bike it was just some old junk with a broken fork and pretty much no parts. Whoever had it painted it with a dark-green that was ugly to look at.
I sand blasted all of it and rebuilded it from scratch. The only original paint that remain on it are the inner "GT" Logo on the lower triangle.
A decent bike that i have been abusing a lot and never failed on me so far. I went a bit crazy and made it custom 4 brakes. 2 V-Brakes and 2 Disc Brakes. 4 Brake levers.
From someone that learned to build wheels without any instructions and failing a lot before succeeding your video on wheel building was really well done and easy to understand. I've tried to explain stepping on the spokes right after a fresh build but didnt know how exactly to go about letting others know why we do it, till I saw your video and it all made sense. We can send a fresh build without stepping on it all the way around on both sides but in short order the spokes will bed in on the rim and hub and slightly release tension so it seems like the spokes loosened up after the first couple rides(but in reality the spokes bedded In which lessened the initial tension)so we are basically destressing the spokes to eliminate early spoke stretching and keep the wheel tension so we dont require as much maintenance down the road.
I'll be 34 this year and gt was always my dream bike so I finally bought an aggressor to ride. Thanks for the great video!!!
I have an aggressor but I’m not 34
Retro Gt stuff is gold. Lasts a lifetime
Hey Ali Clarkson! Nice resto on that new fangled modern bike! My first bike was a 1985 rocky mountain Blizzard that was the first year of sis shifting! Wish I hadn't sold it! Hope you sneak out on your bike a bit when no one is looking! Ride ride ride!
I could tell you had watched a My Mechanics video before i read the description, it has that feel! Nice bike, good to see older frames get a new life, so many good older bikes out there!
Man, my first good bike was also a GT Avalanche, what a coincidence! Got mine in 2005, absolutely fantastic. I miss that bike so much. Few time ago had the oportunity to have a GT Outpost trail from 1995, didnt think twice, got it, put some modern parts and im rocking it since then. It reminds me of the GT Avalanche. Those retro bikes are so much fun and incredibly good to ride, they bring back some good old memories. Nice vid man. Keep rocking. Cheers from Brasil.
Such an enjoyable video to watch Ali! Thanks :)
Nice bike, makes me wanna get mine out the shed and wheelie round the garden.
So cool that your doing this and that you haven’t just forgotten about it 🔥
Great choice on Double Tan!
Nice one!
Bought that frame as my first jump/trials bike back in late 90:s, but I had a metallic blue in a size 16 I think.
I remember the sales guy in the bike shop couldn't believe I wanted such a small frame for my length (I'm 188cm today), but for what I'm was going to use it for it was perfect!
The bike turned out so sick!
@@Ali_Clarkson Even though I'm not from that bikes era, it still makes me so happy to see a cool project like this!
Cant wait to see the videos of you riding trials on this beast
sadly you are one of the most underrated youtuber/bike rider
love your content :)
Ali, it's a GOOD video, thanks ! ... tan tyres for sure ! 🎉🥳
First he mentions MyMechanics, and then it says „I fit the new one”… I like that 👍😎
Awesome video! L9ve the comical but informative subtitles works super well!
Ali, in 17:15 you used a gear compresionless housing (with stright strings) insted of wound brake housing (which have round string to hold the breake forces)
no wonder it broke..!
Clear compound v brake pads from disco brakes and a brake booster........best brakes ever. Even with smooth rims. Love them
Absolutely love GT bikes. Have done since early 90's when i worked as a YTS in a local bike shop.
Very cool! I still have my well cared for 1997 GT LTS Team bike.
You did the dirty frame clean indoors and the clean headset fit outdoors! I’d have been roasted by my missus. Great video, so easy to forget the origins of trials... and I love “bits box” bikes.
Awesome mate, good work. X
Interesting build! My first (proper) mountain bike was a GT Aggressor. Looking forward to see you chucking this one about. The written commentary was amusing.
Would have loved to see you polish the frame to a nice shine then clear coat it after getting the original stickers.would have been so sweet.
'i do it sam pilgrim style' as you smash the headset in with a bit of wood. love it haha
Wow the finished bike looks amazing. Memories... I had a steel GT Karakaram (early 90's). It had a U-brake with a built-in strengthening arch. I put Michelin Chamonix tyres on it back in the day along with many customizations. Changed the threaded rigid forks and ridiculously long stem to an Aheadset, short stem and rst suspension. I wanted rockshox Judy's but they were too expensive then. I was planning to put maguras on it but it got stolen, in '98. I do miss that bike, but not the internal cable routing!
I'l have to look into that video. Thanks
great job. a lot of hard work out there. well done👍
Just finished building up an old GT timberline last night! Love the look of the frames
The reading was nice and even some wit thrown in there!
Those forks are a thing of beauty
I love the look of old gt bikes
inspired by this built. now I'm going to do my Timberline!! subscribed!!
What an amazing vid! Thank you for your job! That's a perfect example of oldschool and capable bike, smth I want build for myself too. Think it is perfect bike for comuting with some steeze.
10:22 im sure it does haha. nice bike, funny to see a retro bike with such a mix of new parts on.
Those triple triangle frames STILL look fantastic. Nice looking build.
Yeah, I miss old Nitromors too. The way it used to burn your nostril hairs and took the paint off the neighbours fences just by opening the tin.
Just watched the video mate. Very good. Funny enough I'm building an avalanche for my brother at the minute. Also just finishing off my hardrock sport with 13 inch frame. Used to be so into cycling then I got motorcycles. Now I had time I'm getting back into It.
Hey any bike is good.. great way to keep riding ,,🤘🏻
Uncanny... I spent a couple of evenings last week resurrecting my '96 (bought in '97) GT Pantera. The frame is almost identical to that. I've kept mine as close as I could to its original purpose, though I've had to make some concessions for the same reasons. I love the beefy welds, and polished alu look too. I'm glad I've kept it this long.
Great vid Ali, that frame deserves a proper polish, I'd love to see it looking a bit more shiniery 😉. Long live 26"!
I own a 92 Gt Tequesta and I love it. The bike is fully black with White paint splashes on it.
I still have my 96 Zaskar built these days as a 3x9 disc brake bike. Still my favourite mountain bike. My main off roader these days is a cross bike. Nice build.
She's beautiful! My first proper bike was a 16" 97 GT arrowhead so this build really appeals to me!
Always happy when I see you've posted a new video 😂
It sure does fit perfectly
Funniest video you've uploaded. I'm not even into trials but this was great to watch.
nice bike build, i redid my specialized stumpy like 6-7 yrs ago with a orange paint.
Love the old bikes, i wonder if i will still love my 2008 as much as i loved the 98.
also have a 2017, i guess i get a good bike every decade.
yeahboy!!! the channel is back!!! i wanted to see this video again so bad, i just got a GT Pantera frame and im so keen to build a nice Singlespeed bike
Can you make a video on how you make your own brake pads?
Sí..por favor como los hace.
Oh man I had a 90s yellow gt karakoram with rs judy and my buddy had a silver gt avalanche. Great bikes and lots of memories
That was my first MTB .. Brings back happy memories out in all weathers ✌️
Love t shirt rag and Sam Pilgrim way 😉 watching it without any music is very calming.
Hahaha as soon as you pulled out the decendant crank I knew „well... that‘s gonna be interesting fitting a gxp crankarm into a 24mm BB“ Nice work Ali! :)
Also cheers from Switzerland, as mymechanics is also
I love those builds of your, those jokes. I'm always sure you will suprise me with some legacy parts.
Nice video Ali. I’m a MyMechanics fan too and it’s a fitting tribute. Funny thing is, I’ll be rebuilding my own sentimental project soon - an ‘89 Avalanche! Looking forward to seeing the bike being reused.
This has better spec than my main bike🤣, great video
Another awesome video ali loving the retro build cant wait to see you out riding again and a little tip I use petrol to remove stickers works a treat
Great build man....I don't even consider it retro. Its just building a good frame with good parts to make a great bike. And it will ride as good as anything out there. The result is greater than the sum! Its the best feeling when you out rip someone on their 2020 boutique brand...proof that modern marketing is simply mumbo jumbo.
This was super cool! Makes me want to dig my old Raleigh M60 out of the shed and build it up like this. 🤔
I'm so excited to see how this rides
I remember when i was a teen all my friends where getting into trials I put fat tires and a smaller chainring on an old Mountainbike frame to ride with them and it didn't ride well but boy was it fun
THX that is great video. I have similar memories on my first bike (merida dakar 780 1996)
Love those triple triangle frames!
tan walls on a polished bike looks great!
I really enjoyed in this video
95 gt interceptor was my first rig. When I was a wee lad. I rode gt for years then fell in love with powerlite. (Bmx racing)🤘
That’s nuts dood!
I literally just pulled one of these out of the garbage. I'm planning on building it into something. Had a heck of a time finding out what it was because most of the stickers had cracked and peeled off. It has a single bolt derailleur hanger like this one(some gt's have a double bolt) and the two wads of metal for the rear brake guide. Seat tube is 18.5, i assume that makes it an 18.
Yo Ali, great video, I am not a fan of tan walls but they work well in this case.
My merch arrived and the hoody will end up walking it's self to the washing machine as I'm wearing it every day!
where we all started,. on some random mtb
Oh, I had a GT Tequesta as first MTB! Those memories!!
I have one as well I took all the parts of it and I don't know what to do whit it but after watching your realbild now I know what to I'm going to give her new life thanks bro. I love to show the frame but how
I love it ! I just scored a almost mint 1998 GT Avalanche LE with full XT and Judy sl freshly serviced for 250 bucks ! I'm estatic as i sold these bikes ,that i could not afford, at the bike shop i worked at as a mechanic in the 90's
Wow great work, cool vid
Ali. two things.Hope do a convertor for Sram/Truvativ cranks and most important. That is gear outer you are using for the brake not brake outer. The brake outer is a coiled metal inside to resist compression but be flexible where as gear is more rigid. 😄 I'm a bike mech by trade...Nice vlog though.
@@Ali_Clarkson that's interesting to know. Cables have always been a sneaky experiment I have found. Nice idea about making your own brake pads too. The adaptors are just a couple of shims that fit non drive side I believe. Best check though. Hope you are well.
The Shimano SP5 I haven't seen before ( that I can remember). We use Jagwire as Shimano stuff can be a bit pricey. The BMX market died a death round here when Micro scooters took off. Then of course the fashion went brakless. I hope I didn't offend.
@@Ali_Clarkson lucky you did. Oh the Tan wall look spot on on the GT.
that bike looks clean i would totally ride that. especially since i have no bike at all lol
good job on the video love that raw asmr type
Awesome Build.
I'm currently working on a 96 Mongoose Iboc Comp, hopefully turns out similar 👍
