  • Wow what a response I got after my last retro ride video where I asked about a replacement frame!
Turns out I simply have the best fans who are eager to help and in the end I had to turn down some great offers as I simply don't have the space to store all the cool frames people were willing to donate!
I have accepted a few frames and will be explaining more in the future but this video is about the frame Chris Brown sent me, an early 2000s GT (possibly a Backwoods?).
It's exactly what I was after, a frame similar to my old Avalanche but a bit smaller so I can actually do a little bigger riding.
I'm genuinely surprised how much these old style trials bike can do! Don't get me wrong, a dedicated bike like my Inspired is better/easier but for someone who perhaps wants to try trials out, then modifying their own bike or buying a cheap Ebay frame like this and a couple of trials parts from www.tartybikes.co.uk would get a very capable bike for pretty cheap!
HUGE thanks to everyone who got in touch about a replacement frame!

That's what a professional means! Even with a frame whose geometry is not very comfortable, it seems that you do tricks with the ease of a butterfly! And also, I found on Google map a place under the bridge where you rode!☺️ This is the section between Paisley Rd and Kingston Quay!)
Perhaps I will never be lucky to visit Glasgow, but it is so nice to know a little more about this beautiful city!

If RUclips was entirely retro mtb content, I'd be happy. Sure, the new bikes are great and all, but they also make things a lot easier too. My own 90's bikes put the fun and challenge back into riding without having to spend huge amounts to go somewhere the bike is designed for, any old family-friendly trails are a blast on those old bikes.

    • @stinkyfungus

Other than the fact it doesn't have a working gearset, this bike is an example of what a budget minded privateer would have competed on in the late 90s early 2k
In the 26" stock class. This rig is far from "crappy"
Back in that era, a hot number for a home brewed 26" stocker was a Gary Fisher "genesis geometry" XC frame in small or extra small. The genesis bikes had longer top tubes, and shorter chain stays than was commonly seen back then. Made for a pretty capable trials rig.
A 1x crankset using a 22t 0r 24t granny ring, with a bash ring in the middle or outer position was common, Short cage road derailluers, and 5 or more road cassette cogs were also the norm to comply with gearing requirements, they just had to work well enough to be considered "functional"
The well funded could buy a ready made 26" stocker from outfits like Monty etc. But most of us made due with a used, small or XS MTB frame and whatever we could cobble togeather from our parts bins... helped to know some roadies - they were always swapping out perfectly good shimano 105 short cage rear mechs for ultegra bits and parts binning them.

Nice job mentioning you don't need a trials specific bike - I competed in "stock" class meaning it was basically an off the shelf mountain bike you used for trials. Nice job.

Nice one mate, proving to yourself and everyone else that the bike helps, but it’s not always a limitation.
I started riding aged 12-13 on a hi-tensile steel rigid giant with 21spd suntour gears, standard drive crank, 1” quill stem and saved pocket money and Christmas gifts to buy Shimano m600 brakes with stx-rc levers. I later regretted buying those levers as they cut my knuckles to pieces. Apart from being fully rigid there wasn’t much going in my favour with that bike. I adapted and made do.
Started out with the side hop and became fully obsessed until I was 16. Much of my average school grades can be attributed to my love for trials. Had some great times and hold fond memories of the buzz riding with mates after school and weekends. Wish I’d kept riding now.

That 360 endo drop to wheelie then back up was proper old school! What's it like for dropping to front wheel? I always found my Curtis better for that than the newer style echo and adamant frames I had. (I used to love drops to front, cracked a few frames though! there's a clip of me doing one in Nick G's glasseyetrials dvd. And also a drop to flat from two big cotton reels, landing on a redbull can at NASS festival).
I'm loving these videos Ali, it's great seeing the old style bikes being ridden again, and it's interesting to see how you're able to adapt newer style manoeuvres to the older size and geometry.
