Agreed!
I thought the same!
this whole video makes my heart happy
I have to admit that I was cringing when I saw you removing the classic paint job. BUT the end result was so much better than I could have anticipated. Proof (if needed) that these kind of restoration projects always come out with a result which is greater than the sum of its parts. And the new paint job looks fantastic!
Lol I agree. I had a hard time destroying a good paint job too but in the end I really loved how it turned out. It rides nice too. I love the tires.
@@oldshovel yeah those tires look amazing, although they look like they may not have that much traction.
They don’t. They’re intended to be for dirt jumping but good gumwalls are hard to find now for 26”. For the riding I’ll do with this one it should be fine.
@@oldshovel that's what I thought.
When spary painting a bike it can really go either way...
We have all seen those supposed restauration videos that are really just a dude rattle-canning a trash bike...
Sir.... your style and story telling make me watch every single video.....even when I say to myself I'm not crazy about a color scheme you chose, it's still amazing just to watch you work..... no one is better on RUclips at what you do.....I salute you
What a great looking bike.I am a former bike shop owner & professional wrench & i do the same thing also restoring vintage steel MTB's giving them a new life with some modern changes.Taken vintage MTB's & turning them in cool single speeds & fast commuter slick townie streets bikes.I then donate most of my bikes to my fellow veterans who need some transportation or just want a cool bike to ride, then some i sell for profit to restore more vintage MTB'S.but the best joy is seeing the smiles on the faces i get from the fellow veterans in my town when i give them the a bike for free the thank you's never seem to stop coming these hero's. (US NAVY DISABLED COMBAT VETERAN GULF WAR / DESERT STORM /SOMALIA WAR/BATTLE FOR MOGADISHU/OPERATION RESTORE HOPE)
Awesome awesome awesome! I love that. Thanks for joining in on the conversation. Keep it up.
I love bikes, but your videos are much more than bikes. The images, the environment, the soundtrack and everything, makes me think that you are a really good person! A great guy! I'm Brazilian, and I share this video with my girl in France. She will surely love it. Thank you. Tchau!
This build is AMAZING. I love the paint job - the constellations are beautiful. Thank you so much
I absolutely love your content, my favorite part of your videos is when you share memories and stories. It's almost as if life is being shared from an older family member. Keep up the amazing work.
Best comment of the day. Thanks for the support and kind words.
You had me at the Richey Logic cranks, then a supreme resto !
The fact the era of frame & other apt components were bang on made the video truly satisfying. The fact everything was available bespeaks to a truly legendary period of mtbiking.
I have my bro-in-law’s old 22 inch gray&teal Specialized Rockhopper Comp, that he bought new in 1990. He gave it to me in 1997, and despite having other mountain bikes, it’s been my main ride ever since I got it! It’s a bit battle worn nowadays, and I’ve been wanting for years to refinish it in orange paint, but I still Lovvvve that bike! It’s the first bike I ever had, that made me feel like I was flying!
fantastic job oldshovel !!! The Hudson bay company is the oldest company in North America and has been trading blankets since 1670 and first commissioned the the Thomas Epson textile mill in England to make the striped blanket that they still make today. The company traded these same blankets for furs mostly beaver and minerals like gold that led to the exploration of the North American continent. The company still has stores here in Canada and still sells those same blankets. A lot of history for a blanket and a store.
I have an old 1997 Rockhopper FS Alu framed which I bought new, very similar to this one, (only with the brakes levers on the "wrong" side) You've done it proud!!!
Still use it too!!!
Your work is so inspiring. I love how old things bring to us their new meaning with a restoration made with love and care.
Keep going! Ciao!
Thanks 🙏
I have started fishing for bikes in the local rivers and canals for bikes to restore and this is because you and a few other RUclipsrs so I thank you from my heart 🚲
This bike turned into something to be hanged on the wall as an art piece. If it were mine, i would not even ride it, so beautiful it became. Great work! Congrats. Very inspiring. I just re-bought a 1994 KHS Aero Sport that used to be mine to restore it inspired by your videos. Cheers from Brazil.
Your videos are so relaxing
You are making me fall in love with old bikes again...
RUclips recommended your videos after I bought a new bike after nearly a decade and started to watch bike related stuff. I wanted to learn something about the mechanics to take care of my bike properly. I spent a whole night watching your videos. It is awesome to watch your skills and I keep watching to learn from it. Thanks a lot for your awesome work and sharing it
Thank you Daniel.
Beautiful! I love your videos. I did a restoration about 20 years ago. My son's youth 20". I forgot what brand. It was a Walmart perches. We donated it to a kid for Christmas. I have a picture of it somewhere. Thanks
I love it. Yet when you put the lettering on, that gold man ....epic ! I now know what colour to paint my old Canadian TECH frame . Gold !
The patience , skill and concentration of guys who do these restorations drives me crazy. I put some new brakes , cranks and bars on my bike and I was burnt out.
I totally get it.
Major work on wheels and spokes you did paint without spokes, then back together, time consuming not to mention skill involved. Great attitude to work is rare, you have! Congratulations. Only seen a few of your videos and the enjoyment on process is in everyone of the bikes I've seen you worked on. Very rare. Those are quality and gifts of a true artist. My words come short to your dedication but results speaks for themselves. Keep up the good work.
It's awesome that you do that for people in your community.. there's no greater love than that....
Going through your back catalog. This was an amazing paint job. Well done.
binge watching your videos...and sir, this is the best build I've seen....that paintjob
Something that might help with your next paint job is to never stop or start your spray over what your spraying. Start spraying before the piece and continue spraying until you are past it, helps eliminate the possibility of runny paint. And this bike turned out absolutely gorgeous!! Please continue to do more!
Good tip. I am by no means a pro painter. That’s one thing that’s awesome about these paints. You can be a total novice and still have things end up good. Thanks for watching.
oldshovel I’m sure since it turned out amazing!
Beautiful restoration, I love the paintjob and the silent hub is amazing. Great video too! I restored my dads old road bike this summer and enjoyed the process. Now I get to ride it to university everyday and it always puts a smile on my face.
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Wow Man What A Fantastic Bike. Dare I Say Its A Work of Art.
Thanks 🙏
Bike came out beautiful even better than I thought
Thanks 🙏
Have recently found your channel and I LOVE IT. Being a born and raised Canadian this build hits home. can't wait for your next videos.
I just woke up to this video. I watched the first 5 minutes before work and can’t wait to watch the rest when I get home. I really look forward to your bike restorations, and the fact that you are doing it for a kid for Christmas makes it that much better.
Thanks for watching. It was an awesome fun bike to restore.
Back around 1995 my brother bought a slate grey Specialized Rockhopper that was full XT equipped and i was like 😍, i was riding a neon orange Haro that i got at a pawn shop for dirt cheap. I road that bike hard like 5 day's a week and it was fun 👍. I was going to buy my brother's bike a few years back because he still had it but my son and i were building up our musical instruments so i passed and he sold it, seeing this Rockhopper brought bacl those old memories of riding back in those day's ☝️.
This must be one of the nicest white paintjobs on a bike that I’ve seen! Fantastic work and as usual a really nice video to watch!
Love the way how you're bring retro bike, remake it and add new bits. Looks amazing 🔥
Great idea to give back to the young people in your community this way. An inspiration.
Thanks
Wow oh wow this is the most beautiful build yet!
Hey old shovel, I recently found your channel and absolutely love your stuff and have subscribed! I think you should take a photo of the bike before you restore it and one after you have restored it (very similar photos) and cut it down the middle so that half of the end photo is new bike and half is old. Keep up the amazing work!
I must say you are one kind giving human being and honestly I feel you give back in so many ways few I think will understand thank you.
Thanks
Thanks for the Hudson's Bay themed bicycle. Cheers, from Canada
Please make more bike restorations I absolutely love them and find them soothing. Found your channel a few days ago and haven't stopped watching all your videos, keep it up I love them!
Awesome thanks and I will.
I've just stumbled upon your channel now. Really amazing and inspiring builds/restorations. The videos are so satisfying to watch, seeing the new life breathed into old classics. Please keep them coming.

One of my favorite bike builds
the world needs more people like you, you are truly an inspiration! way to go sir
Love this color scheme !!

Beautiful bike. Stumbled across your channel and addicted now find it relaxing how you put your videos together and very up building. Nice of your sister to get you the prezzie looks great. All the best from the UK.
Bike turned out beautifully
What a fantastic restoration and you really gave the old bike a new life with a soul.
Thanks 🙏
Its nice to see old things brought to life again and bring a smile to someone's face. Amazing work!
Thanks 🙏
this year 1994, I already hold my mountain bike competitions at Cross Country here in Brazil, I had bikes from national frames like Alfameq and with parts like those of the shimano XT, it was a consumption dream at the time this mountain of the Specialized RockHopper or Stamp Jamp, and beautiful rock shock suspensions. Mes brought this video back to the past. Congratulations on the excellent work of restoring these works of art. beautiful video !!! Congratulations !!!
Awesome thanks
Your video is soothingly fresh.... Plus that music background and how you narrate.. It'll make your heart happy watching your vid. Keep up the good work man!
Thanks 🙏
Wow, just love seeing old school mountain bikes that I grew up with given new life, it warms the soul and brings back fond biking memories of biking in the early 1990's. What we have today is so much better for biking, but There will always be a generation that will never know where we came from.
True my friend. This era, mid 90’s was one of a lot of great innovation. There were a lot of fun thing just being thought of that shaped what we have today. Thanks for joining the conversation.
That paint job looks fantastic.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks 🙏
What a paint job. Another amazing restoration
Wow that came out exceptional. I wasn’t too sure about the stripes at first but it really does sets off the bike. And that’s a pretty awesome gift that your sister gave you.
Such a wonderful resto. I loved how you stuck to old school, all the way down to the bottom bracket. Most of my bike tool will not work with today’s bikes. They would with this one. You were very creative with the paint. Make me want an old school bike, like my Voodoo.
I really admire your pacient & dedication, & a kind heart, thanks joe. I am learning more about bicycle restoration. Thanks.
The paintjob is awesome!
Bravo. A simply stunning refurbished classic. I've breathed new life into a couple of old Kona's for my son and I, using spray.bike too.
It’s a great product.
What a Gorgeous build! It’s a work of art.
A fantastic bit of mechanical restoration you did. The paint job is amazing of what you did. Hope it inspires many people to be able to get the confidence to be able to do something like this with their cycle.
Very nice... the tan tyres set the bike off very well 👍
Agreed. Thanks
This has to be the nicest bike ive ever seen. No lie!
Thanks
@@oldshovel man I wish I could own a decent bike. They're so expensive, you're right
Really enjoying your channel man... you're doing great work... I've been busy restoring a 120 year old reed organ for the last 8 months... "21 episodes and counting" LOL... it's been kicking my ass, but I'm close to getting it wrapped up... keep up the good work...
Wow restoring an organ sounds awesome
That bike is phenomenal!!!
Very fun video to watch! As someone who tinkers with old bikes often (I have way too many) I realize how much work goes into your restorations. Simply beautiful paint job!
I've been binging your channel on the treadmill for the last few weeks and I think this paint job is just sweet. This and the green Ritchie you did with the local teacher are my favorites.
Stunning restoration.
That turned out beautifully. Really, really, fine work and creativity.
Man what a great story and what a great and impressive build.
Those constellations look mint!
I think that might be the nicest bike I have ever seen.
This paint job blowed my mind
Wow, that bike looks incredible. Great build!
Thanks
Great job again. And so cool to see you riding at the end. I really like the idea of these bikes getting used again. Riding trails once more 👍🏼
Thanks 🙏
That thing looks so clean!
Thanks 🙏
Wow. These builds are amazing!!
Thanks
Beautyful job, beautiful soul.
Thanks 🙏
I'm certain that the young man receiving this bike will be very grateful! Beautiful job as always 👍
Oh my god finally someone rebuilding a bike and re-greasing the headset surfaces before bearing cup insertion...
Impressed!
Wow...incredible job...stunning. Brings back memories of my early 90's Mtb life. I still have my 1992 Specialized Stumpjumper FS. Might have to do a restoration of that one now. Keep up the good work.
Do it.
I put a 50mm bmx stem and wald riser bars on mine. It rides so much better than with flat stick bars and 8” stem.
I love this bike and I love what you do period.
This must be the coolest mountainbike I've ever seen... Wow...
that old ritchey crank is pristine!!!
What a dream! Why didn't you keep it? One of the best you've ever restored! 🎉
Oh man that gold!!! So so so sweet
Amazing job with that mountain bike! 👍
Thanks 🙏
Você é o melhor...um artista...parabens pelo seu maravilhoso trabalho..
Thank you for the Spray.Bike paint recommendation, just finished painting my 30 year old mountain bike and it came out great! This paint is amazing and so user friendly.
I really love your bike videos. Love the old stuff and the music is incredibly relaxing
Awesome thanks.
Another magnificent build, mate! Keep them coming!
Thanks 🙏

Just got back into the bike world your a beast...
Hi there! Little remarks :
-you should put grease on the BB axle before pushing the crank arms onto it, it ensures an easier dismounting, same for the pedals, rear derailleur, brake calipers and everything screwed with force.
-I advise you to use a torque wrench, especially for the alloy parts.
Awesome restoration though, keep up the good work, man!
Greetings from France.
This is a beauty. I recently used spray.bike paint on a build, and, despite my subpar application, it is indeed better than the run-of-the-mill hardware store paint. You inspire me to try a restoration job on an old basement Schwinn. Job well done.
I love watching this. I love building bikes, painting bikes, old and new, and watching these inspires me to go and do it better, thank you for doing what you do
Classic and beautiful. Good work.
Beautiful job the old girl looks awesome I would love to have something beautiful like that hanging in my apartment
Real art. You have done amazing job
Thanks 🙏
Been waiting for this build. Looks good. I like the colors. Great job. And building a bike for a gift for a kid is awesome.
Thanks 🙏
What an amazing job. Beyond impressed by your commitment, passion and excellence.
