A Do-It-Yourself Portable Smoker For Camping, Beach Trips, And More

- With just two foil roasting pans, some metal skewers, aluminum foil, and a small cooling rack, I was able to build a Portable DIY Smoker and test it. Did it work? Have a look and check out the Tri Tip I cooked on my little creation :)
This sort of project would allow you to smoke cuts of meat, including chicken, beef, and sausage, if you are at the beach or on a camping trip, without the bother of bringing along a larger grill or smoker.

Nice out of the box thinking. Looked good.
To be honest, I truly was uncertain about how it would work. I mean, the design is straightforward, but the process and the result was very satisfying. And tasty :)
Can you use flavored wood chips in it
Totally Genius! It reminds me of when I started seriously fishing as a hobby. I went out and bought the best of the best equipment, I mean just went all out! Well on a fishing trip, I was out there and I mean I just wasn't catching ANYTHING! Well I looked across the pond and I saw a little guy (maybe 10 or 11), fishing with like a $5 Zebco and some worms or grasshoppers he caught there in the grass. And this kid was catching ALL morning! It was impressive. It was also very humbling, and from that moment on I realized (and this goes with almost anything), it's not about what you got, it's how you use it! That little "makeshift" smoker is pure genius!
This was such a fun video to do. I just let my brain go crazy with the idea :)
Or put briquettes in middle of rack and have potatoes on sides on rack ... this is brilliant , thanks for posting this
Wooow.!! You couldn’t have done it better sir. It’s perfect and the meat looks so juicy.! Yummie.! Bon appetite.
A few binder clips would hold the top on even better.
That's a great suggestion :)
Nice looking for a camping smoker. Think I found it. Thanks
This is simple genius. We’re going to try this on our next camping trip in a few weeks. Thanks for the creativity.
Great idea! I was looking for something to use while camping. I'm going to try your design, but leave out everything on the charcoal side, drop wood chips there, toss the whole thing on a Coleman 2 burner stove, and just heat the side under the wood chips. If all goes well it should make for nice apple wood smoked tri tip.
Thanks to those that suggested binder clips. Great idea
I've seen some interesting designs that use the same concept.
Saw this last night so I had to run out to the dollar store and give it a whirl myself. More or less followed your method, the only changes were that I bought a 6 pack of binder clips from said dollar store to help keep the lid tight, which actually help quite a bit, and I also just bought a cheapo cookie cooling rack rather than use skewers. In my case I had to cut the rack to size, but it was VERY easy and didn't require anything elaborate...just a pair of tin snips and then a bit of wire to hold it back together after it was cut. You could honestly have just bent the rack back and forth on the side of a picnic table if you had to, and re-attached it with paper clips. The whole thing took maybe 20 mins. Anyway started it up with 10 or 11 briquettes and had the same problem, way too much heat, so I backed it off to about 8-9 and got it down to a relatively useable 285. Still on the hot side but not a huge deal. Let them burn about as far as they'd go, and I did add a couple of briquettes near the end as the temp was beginning to taper off. Total cook time was nearly an hour on the dot for a ~1.25 lb chunk of sirloin. Gonna bring this camping later in the summer for sure! Might try sort of a "snake method" approach, only light maybe 5 briquettes to start but arrange them in a row rather than just light the whole thing at once.
Anyway great project, super easy to make, and easy to operate! Fun stuff.
The binder clips are a great idea :)
The “only” changes 🤣
LOL, I was completely riveted to the screen watching this
Excellent!
Cheers for the video mate. I picked up a small fish smoker today on clearance. This gives me the confidence that I’ll be able to do larger cuts as long as I leave it a bit longer.
Brilliant video! I live in a motorhome so this would be perfect for me as I can't carry a regular smoker, thanks man 👏👍☺️
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. I would’ve never thought to do it. Nice one, Ry!
It was just one of those fun ideas I had to try :)
WOW.... Awesome Rye you really went outside the box wonderful . From Trinidad
Thank you :)
Very creative make shift smoker indeed
Wonderful Job , Mate. Good on you. keep coming.....Mate
I like how you made a smoker out of aluminum foil pan, I made a charcoal grill out of a aluminum foil pan, cause I didn't want to pull out my big grill, my favorite wood flavor I like to use is cherry, sugar maple, peach and oak.
Perfect
I've been really wanting to make tri tip here on the SF Beach area. Thank you for your sweet video!!
That was an awesome experiment and fun to watch.
Thanks! It was a fun one to make. And it worked!
Gave me lots of ideas, maybe build with a chafing pan!
Good idea Ry. Thanks for sharing.
It was a fun one to do.
Love it! Thank you!
Good concept. No reason the same technique wouldn’t work on a Weber mini portable charcoal grill.
As longs as you can fit what you're cooking, no issue at all with that. It should function quite well :)
I'm going salmon fishing and camping. I have a bunch of those aluminum pans. I will try your idea, thanks!
Great fun! I've fashioned a few impromptu grills over the years, but never a disposable smoker.
The principals were all there, just adjusting the fuel and sizing is all that would be needed.
I might just try this over the weekend.
Thanks Ry.
It was a hoot to try, and it actually worked!
Ry MacGyver!! That was fun to watch!
LOL. Mac saves the fay :)
Great job Ryan going to try this when I go to the Beach or Camping good job maybe use Biding clips to hold them together might work.
I'd patent that bad boy, lol!
I love stuff lke this. Ill be gving this a try, nice video. Thks!
man u legend
Get wet apple or apricot wood chips.
Hi Ry, just subbed your channel from Australia, loved the video very much thank you for sharing.....CM
WOW!!! Just found this. We are planning our beach vacation. I will give'r a try at home and then take it to the beach. Have you tried this configuration with other meats? Thanks for sharing.
Just Tri Tip but it should work for other cuts. Kind of fun to do :)
To keep top with bottom use paper clips
I just checked out this video. Fantastic job!👍🏻
Are you ever going to resurrect it to smoke some thighs? 🤔😉🇨🇦
Interesting idea :)
Excellent. Very well done, sir.
Thank you. That was a fun project :)
Can I use 2 stainless steel pans welded together to create a facsimile of your smoker? It would have most/all your smoker's features without the waste. The aluminium pan although light will have to be remade. The one done with two welded stainless pans would last a lot longer and would only be a tad heavier than the you you created with the disposable aluminium pan. I am not an inventor so I don't know.
Interesting idea. I'm not a fabricator but it might work even a little better with solid metal instead of the aluminum I used.
@@CookingWithRy great. Go for it.
I don't have the funds for these materials at the moment which would have to include shop tools as well as a space to store them.
These things are items I am saving to purchase.
Hey Ry,
Love the channel....When are you going to do another slow cook brisket?
Thanks Matthew! Probably early summer when I can gather enough family around to eat it :)
@13:40 why don't you like to use matchlight for cooking?
We think alike.
Could u later potatoes on under the meat?
I am looking at such a thing to SMOKE / PRESERVE meat with, not so much to cook /BBQ with. Maybe you could do something pertaining to preserving meat. I do know one has to keep the temp low but not sure how low, maybe just enough to start and keep the smoke going. How many briquettes one would need? How long to smoke a 3-1/3 lbs of meat? I know that it will shrink during the process. Maybe a 3-1/2 lb would end up being 2lbs.Don't know. Still enjoyed the video. Thanks...Jack
😳
You have any more recipes using this??
ie chicken wings??
No, I only did that one using it :)
Ry, I have a lil mole on my left cheek exactly is the same place as yours. means nothing ,just thought i would share. nice smoker hack.
I am no chef but if you are making a smoker, why are you so focused on the temperature? Seems like you are making an oven to me as a smoker cooks with smoke and not heat and takes just a little bit longer than and hour and five minutes if I am not mistaken.
Smokers also cook with heat. The smoke is mainly for flavor.
@@CookingWithRy I know in order to cook you need some heat but the heat needed comes from the smoke only not the fire or coal. As seen in this video with the source of heat quite a way away. And just trying to understand the concept for my own project. Thank you. ruclips.net/video/3aquqpT-Ldo/видео.html
good, but "smoker" is NOT synonym for "grill" as you show here.
Yeah I don’t get hung up on terms. It’s the food that matters, not whether someone says BBQ, grill, or smoke.
Hear me out. Binder clips...
way to complicated dude you don't to do that much
Dude it was for fun. Relax.
