Sex ed in french school : everybody together. It's actually a part of the biology curiculum, not some time set aside especially for that and I feel like it makes more sense that way.
We had a separate “boys and girls” puberty talk when I was around 11. And an actual semester of health/sex ed at 15-ish. However… as a cis male, I’m pretty sure my mom gave a simplified explanation of a period when I was very young. Kids sees hygiene item, asks “what’s that?” Discussion ensues. Also, I was 5 when my sister was born. Which, at least for me, was old enough to have questions. It’s not that hard to appropriately discuss pregnancy with a child.
For real dude, I’m a guy (not cis) and my parents just kept books about pregnancy and everything and were perfectly open to discussion and gentle explanation on the topic, so I knew all the basic information (where babies come from, periods, even the DIVISION OF CELLS in the womb) before any of my classmates had even seen the differences between male and female anatomy. It doesn’t have to be one big ‘talk’, it can just be gradual explanations, and I wish more people understood that.

My takeaway is, kids benefit from absorbing the beauty of life in the first years, then anatomical details slightly later.

I'm a trans guy who had to deal with the US education system, and while the video was amusing to watch, after it was finished I realized that this all seems ridiculous since I've had years now to fill in the gaps that my education left, but if you'd asked me these same questions when I was in my last year of high school or the first year out, I wouldn't have known a lot of the answers. The sense of anxiety left from having no idea what's going on with your own body is unreal. Like, I know dysphoria was part of my discomfort, but it sure as hell wasn't the only factor in why I was so uncomfortable in my own body for years.

I’ve had two Sex-Ed classes, one when I lived in Ireland and went to a (very) catholic school and one in America and went to a public high school. The one back in Ireland didn’t separate based on sex, but the one in America did. And from what I remember the Irish one was better taught. Also, the ages were different. In Ireland we were thought in 6th class, so about 12/13 years old, in America we got it in our freshman year, about 14/15 years old. (And now that I’m really thinking about it, it’s actually horrifying that there are 15 year olds who know/were taught less about sex than a 12 year old.)
American education on this stuff is gonna vary by state, possibly even by school district, because the social conservatives make the rules in some places but not all of them sooooooo

I'm old enough to have gone to a VERY conservative all-girls' school in the UK, back in the 'eighties. Our 'sex education' consisted of a couple of nuns from the local convent making a guest appearance to talk to us about periods. They told us what periods were, advised us to use sanitary towels because "tampons are sinful to use before marriage," and gave us what was basically a brochure from a sanitary towel company advertising their product.
my "sex ed" was called "be smart" and barely touched on sex. periods weren't mentioned once (i was in the girl room, i would know, awkward as hell for a transman). hell, sex was only mentioned a few times. there was more of a focus on drugs, date (noncon intimacy), and abstinence (yeah, it was 100% christianity-based, there was a lot of religious language even though it wasn't a religious school). it was horrible, we had to see pictures of stds (i had to hold my friend's hand and i still cried because it was so gross) and there was no choice if your parents signed you up. you weren't allowed to leave the room once class began, no matter how upset you were. gross as hell.

No idea what the boys learned (but clearly more than the girls). At my school the genders weren’t separated, which is good. But it was awkward AF. I was sitting across from a bunch boys, and I swear they were ALL looking at me and the girls I was sitting next to to see if we had our period, as if they’d be able tell.

In 7th grade we had HG&D and the teacher was talking about periods. Someone asked if we could pee with tampons in and the teacher said yes and explained why. A different kid randomly shouts, “WAIT, THERE’S THREE?!?!?” 😂😂 the teacher and all the girls BURST into laughter

Someone should ask the American lawmakers and politicians who have so much control over reproductive rights and sex ed in school these questions. I think we'd learn pretty quickly that the same people who are ruling that refrigerated embryos being used for IVF are the same as live, born children (yes, a literal court in Alabama has now set this precedent) don't actually know anything about biology or biological functions, especially in women. Also, I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't answer a lot of these questions, even as a trans guy, because I received absolutely zero sex ed in school. That's not hyperbole; the school taught nothing about it because it was a conservative Christian school and they believe that it's the parents responsibility to teach these things. My parents also taught me nothing about it. It's also worth noting that even if you are taught sex ed, it's a bit of a gamble whether or not it's going to be comprehensive and realistic, considering only 18 states legally require sex ed to be medically accurate. Can you imagine a class meant to teach children reaching puberty about their biological functions NOT being medically accurate? It would be laughable if it wasn't such a huge problem.
We had a congressman ask an OBGYN testifying why you ‘can’t just swallow a camera and check around the womb’. Sir, the womb and the stomach are not connected. And he was one of the better ones….. at least he just mistook the colloquial phrase ‘the baby is growing in my belly’ literally…. Some of them made up totally impossible medical procedures and others thought women could choose if a baby happens or not (not in a get an abortion way, but a literal will it to not happen)
Two small corrections: The first few days of the cycle are not fertile in the large majority of people, so unless something really weird happens, one can't get pregnant in those days. The discharge can be normal or not, it depends on amount, color, smell, and other symptoms (or lack thereof).
I think a lot of this is not only the lack of education but also about how we talk about these things. Often girls talk about their periods with each other but not with boys. Maybe that's also part of the problem. Just another consequence that arises from a homosocial-normative society.

We only had one year where sex-ed was mixed. There were only three guys in the class and at some point someone would make a joke and it would turn into a mini sex-ed lesson because ALL of the guys would be confused. We learned a ton about male anatomy in my classes, but I guess they didn’t learn anything about female anatomy.

The first “sex ed” or health class I ever had was in fifth grade (10-11 y/o) and we were separated. In middle school, we were together. In highschool, I was not in school bc of Covid, so we didn’t get “sex ed” or health or anything. Thankfully, I am not dumb, so I did my own research during that time, but I suspect others were not so smart.
I am fortunate that I have a mom who gave me books on anatomy when I was growing up. In 5th grade, my school separated us into boys and girls and only taught us the bare minimum (external changes only) about our own bodies. In high school, our health education included both male and female reproduction. Due to a full class schedule I didn't take this class until I was in 12th grade, so I was in a class of mostly 9th and 10th grade girls. To add some important context I am a trans woman (who wasn't out at the time and most people assumed I was gay) and depsite not having a proper school education on the topic, I was the most knowledgeable in the class on both. It was painfully awkward answering questions that my classmates were too embarrassed to ask our male teacher. It made me sad that so many girls knew less about their bodies than someone who didn't share the same anatomy as them.
I mean the tampon-size thing is not 100% untrue because some people just NEED to use the smallest size cause the ones for heavy flow are just too big (not necessarily to fit but to be comfortable and to use for several days in a row)
We had sex ed in gender separate classes. We only learned the bare basics of the male anatomy. Unfortunately my sex ed class was in the late 80s, so by the time i got my first period everything was out of date. They gave every girl a kit to stash away so they had what they needed for their first period. Mine included a large pad and a BELT to wear and attach the pad to. Needless to say, by the time I started in the early 90s, belts were completely out of use, adhesive pads and tampons were mainstream and i was completely lost.
As an agender person, it’s times like these when I’m glad I abandoned all gender (I’m born biologically male so im sorry that some of my biological brothers are ignorant and just flat out stupid (I blame whoever decided to not teach us properly)

In our sex Ed we weren’t separated! We got one in primary school where two people came in and told us about like love and romantic feelings and stuff (I’m pretty sure at least one of them was bi) and they also talked a bit about queerness and that it’s normal and okay to be queer and then we got one in secondary school where we talked about the biological side of things and stds and how the reproductive system works and that’s what we got 👍
I live in Germany, born in 2000. We had sex ed like 3 or 4 different times to varying levels in different classes between grade 3 and 10. We never got separated and I definitely think it would have been strange

my "sex ed" was called "be smart" and barely touched on sex. periods weren't mentioned once (i was in the girl room, i would know, awkward as hell for a transman). hell, sex was only mentioned a few times. there was more of a focus on drugs, date (noncon intimacy), and abstinence (yeah, it was 100% christianity-based, there was a lot of religious language even though it wasn't a religious school). it was horrible, we had to see pictures of stds (i had to hold my friend's hand and i still cried because it was so gross) and there was no choice if your parents signed you up. you weren't allowed to leave the room once class began, no matter how upset you were. gross as hell.
I had "sex-ed" in 5th grade (I'm American btw). Boys and girls were split. All they told the girls was that girls have periods, and then we sat there for the next 2 days doing nothing. No idea what the boys learned (but clearly more than the girls). We had to sign forms (parents and students) that said we wouldn't discuss _anything_ from the class with _anyone_ while we were at school, and they hid those forms & locked them away. 🙄
I never learned anything else (well, not from a school, at least).

reading all the comments makes me feel so lucky for the sex ed I got. It wasn’t separated, everyone learned abt male and female anatomy, stds, birth control, etc. There was also a slideshow briefly covering the differences between sex, gender, gender expression, and sexual orientation which was also cool. it all felt very normalized ❤
At my school the genders weren’t separated, which is good. But it was awkward AF. I was sitting across from a bunch boys, and I swear they were ALL looking at me and the girls I was sitting next to to see if we had our period, as if they’d be able tell.

as a cis guy, during sex ed i think we spent 1 class learning about female anatomy and saw a video of someone giving birth. the teaching wasnt that great but also i feel like since men dont have periods and often dont really see exposed female parts besides in a sexual context, it makes it hard for them to care enough to commit the anatomy or non-sex related stuff to memory

In 7th grade we had HG&D and the teacher was talking about periods. Someone asked if we could pee with tampons in and the teacher said yes and explained why. A different kid randomly shouts, “WAIT, THERE’S THREE?!?!?” 😂😂 the teacher and all the girls BURST into laughter
After my sex ed one of my guy friends in my friend group said “what did you guys talk about, we just talked about hygiene” one of my other friends decided to give him the period talk he was traumatized 😭
Yes my sex ed was separated for the first half. Then the next part of it we were in the same room but uhh it wasn’t very “detailed” or anything. They just showed the tampons that go in “vaginal cavities”

In my “sex ed” (it was a watered down version for a 7th grade “biology” class) the boys and girls were separated and we were taught the same things. (The female and male anatomy of that area in the body) it traumatized me Ngl.

As an American: In seventh grade they gave us half a year in “health” class, we learned about mental health, nutrition, and towards the end of the year, we got “the talk”. They did not separate us by gender and they actually taught us about reproduction, wow! This. . Included a video of a woman giving birth. . Other than that, the class actually taught us stuff! I went to a public school, and you needed parental consent to attend the class, but still.

Someone should ask the American lawmakers and politicians who have so much control over reproductive rights and sex ed in school these questions. I think we'd learn pretty quickly that the same people who are ruling that refrigerated embryos being used for IVF are the same as live, born children (yes, a literal court in Alabama has now set this precedent) don't actually know anything about biology or biological functions, especially in women.
Also, I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't answer a lot of these questions, even as a trans guy, because I received absolutely zero sex ed in school. That's not hyperbole; the school taught nothing about it because it was a conservative Christian school and they believe that it's the parents responsibility to teach these things. My parents also taught me nothing about it.
It's also worth noting that even if you are taught sex ed, it's a bit of a gamble whether or not it's going to be comprehensive and realistic, considering only 18 states legally require sex ed to be medically accurate. Can you imagine a class meant to teach children reaching puberty about their biological functions NOT being medically accurate? It would be laughable if it wasn't such a huge problem.
We had a congressman ask an OBGYN testifying why you ‘can’t just swallow a camera and check around the womb’. Sir, the womb and the stomach are not connected. And he was one of the better ones….. at least he just mistook the colloquial phrase ‘the baby is growing in my belly’ literally…. Some of them made up totally impossible medical procedures and others thought women could choose if a baby happens or not (not in a get an abortion way, but a literal will it to not happen)

Two small corrections: The first few days of the cycle are not fertile in the large majority of people, so unless something really weird happens, one can't get pregnant in those days. The discharge can be normal or not, it depends on amount, color, smell, and other symptoms (or lack thereof).
I think a lot of this is not only the lack of education but also about how we talk about these things. Often girls talk about their periods with each other but not with boys. Maybe that's also part of the problem. Just another consequence that arises from a homosocial-normative society.

We only had one year where sex-ed was mixed. There were only three guys in the class and at some point someone would make a joke and it would turn into a mini sex-ed lesson because ALL of the guys would be confused. We learned a ton about male anatomy in my classes, but I guess they didn’t learn anything about female anatomy.

here in germany the first sex ed in primary school was seperate but the second and third + the class about stds and contraception specifically was mixed genders

Its crazy to think that my brothers had gone to a catholic school (different than mine) as well and they were taught sex ed
The first “sex ed” or health class I ever had was in fifth grade (10-11 y/o) and we were separated. In middle school, we were together. In highschool, I was not in school bc of Covid, so we didn’t get “sex ed” or health or anything. Thankfully, I am not dumb, so I did my own research during that time, but I suspect others were not so smart.

I am fortunate that I have a mom who gave me books on anatomy when I was growing up. In 5th grade, my school separated us into boys and girls and only taught us the bare minimum (external changes only) about our own bodies. In high school, our health education included both male and female reproduction. Due to a full class schedule I didn't take this class until I was in 12th grade, so I was in a class of mostly 9th and 10th grade girls.
To add some important context I am a trans woman (who wasn't out at the time and most people assumed I was gay) and depsite not having a proper school education on the topic, I was the most knowledgeable in the class on both. It was painfully awkward answering questions that my classmates were too embarrassed to ask our male teacher. It made me sad that so many girls knew less about their bodies than someone who didn't share the same anatomy as them.

I mean the tampon-size thing is not 100% untrue because some people just NEED to use the smallest size cause the ones for heavy flow are just too big (not necessarily to fit but to be comfortable and to use for several days in a row)
We had sex ed in gender separate classes. We only learned the bare basics of the male anatomy. Unfortunately my sex ed class was in the late 80s, so by the time i got my first period everything was out of date. They gave every girl a kit to stash away so they had what they needed for their first period. Mine included a large pad and a BELT to wear and attach the pad to. Needless to say, by the time I started in the early 90s, belts were completely out of use, adhesive pads and tampons were mainstream and i was completely lost.
As an agender person, it’s times like these when I’m glad I abandoned all gender (I’m born biologically male so im sorry that some of my biological brothers are ignorant and just flat out stupid (I blame whoever decided to not teach us properly)

In our sex Ed we weren’t separated! We got one in primary school where two people came in and told us about like love and romantic feelings and stuff (I’m pretty sure at least one of them was bi) and they also talked a bit about queerness and that it’s normal and okay to be queer and then we got one in secondary school where we talked about the biological side of things and stds and how the reproductive system works and that’s what we got 👍
