My sibling came out as nonbinary a few years ago, and us having an almost/entirely straight/cis extended family, we didn't really know what to expect with their reactions. Surprisingly, our whole (huge) extended family respects their pronouns and chosen name and tries their best not to accidentally misgender or deadname my sibling. Just something that I'm incredibly grateful for.

I came out as nonbinary last fall. I use she/they pronouns, because I prefer to be called they, but if people continue to call me she, I don't get upset about it. I don't bother strangers or mere acquaintances with my preference for they, but I love it when friends or family use the right pronoun. By the way, I am 76 years old and have always been a pretty open-minded person.

one time i heard someone say: if you ask a cis person why they are their gender, their answer/reason will most of the time relate or circle back to their sex or the fact that they were born as that gender. when you ask someone who is trans, nonbinary, or whos gender identity does not entirely match with what they were born as, their reasoning goes way more in depth and will relate to things like feelings, surroundings, their history, or maybe even trauma.

As a closeted non-binary person, I have met a couple people saying why non-binary people even exist and how the non-binary community is just ‘a trend’, leaving out the extreme body dysphoria, denial and confusion. Like, can’t people just be people? And also, about the ‘trend’ thing, it’s obviously not true. Non-binary people have existed for as long as people have existed. To be honest, I have been in a state of denial and shock for such a while now and everybody has been very supportive and I hope that you find this acceptance and friends in your life!

Because of this, I usually just introduce myself with they/them pronouns as they have yet to cause me any dysphoria and it's easier than just constantly changing them on people. My relationship with gender is so funny because my parents didn't raise me in a "gendered" way, like I could play with whatever I want, wear whatever I want etc and because I have ADHD I didn't pay attention in school when they were teaching us that there were 2 genders or whatever lmao so i never thought about it.
People called me a tomboy but that's wasn't a label I really identified with even if it probably was the closest description from the outside lol, I was just me- I just happened to prefer more 'boy' stuff to 'girl' stuff. I wasn't even aware of gender as a concept until I hit my teens and puberty and I felt dysphoric lmao (they did at least teach us the difference between sex and gender in secondary school though, it really shocks me the amount of grown adults who don't know that).
Now as an adult I def feel more 'masculine' than 'feminine', whatever the hell those things even are, I don't identify with so-called womanhood at all and have never felt like a woman or a girl, because I'm not one. I consider my gender (or lack thereof?) one of the most "pure" things about me because I was so detached from the performative aspects of gender growing up so it just formed organically for the most part.
In the wise words of The Spongebob movie "you are who you are", and this is who I am lmao, fck everything else.

Hell, you may not even be referred to as a person if you're decent enough. In official Finnish, you got no gender but people aknowledge you as a living being, but everyone speaks spoken Finnish here, in which case you just automatically get referred as "it".

I spoke about my gender fluidity and how I’d honestly be happy with any pronouns as long as it wasn’t just she/her all the damn time. 52 here, so older generation I guess, Gen X. I used to be pretty bad with trans issues, I didn't understand it so I didn't accept it. Then I realized my acceptance didn't require my understanding. I accept lots of things I don't understand. Now I've gotten to the point where I have a friend who came out to me, as a trans woman, before she told anyone outside of her medical providers. I think that is a huge honor.
Recently I've been having fun educating people who insist that They Them is plural. I point out that the word has been used to identify people whose gender is either unknown or irrelevant. And that it has been used like that since Chaucer.

This one one of the realizations that really helped me begin to understand more about gender. My own understanding of my gender was not super clear to me and I always had an “f-this” attitude towards societal gender roles. That made it hard for me at first, to open my mind up to the idea of someone feeling assured and confident in what gender they were. Once I understood that other people can have a strong sense of their gender identity, I realized that even though I don’t really know what that feels like, it doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
I think that realization that other people have different feelings than us, but we don’t need to know all the details to accept them, is so important. It seems so fundamental to let go and relax, in order to open the door to others. I am so glad to see this comment and I’m happy that y’all have come to that realization. It is super cool and it reinforces that the acceptance of not understanding, is so so important.

And, similarly, I feel that pansexuals feel attraction in a different why than bisexuals. They tend to claim gender doesn't play a role. For ne it does, I am just attracted to all genders but that gender is important.

They got angry and frustrated saying "No, what's your gender you male or female, girl or a boy? I'm a girl. What are you? I said "I'm just a person who uses they/them pronouns." and then I walked away and I could hear them yelling like: "bro I just asked this person what they're gender was. I didn't ask for all that, are you a girl or boy? it's simple just like that!" and that's why I don't like people.

It got to a point where it was just so emotionally draining that I decided to just not care. i forced myself to not care about a label and I have felt at lot more at peace with my identity. so now I don't use any specific pronouns and don't label my gender or sexuality and I have found life so much easier. anyways :)

@@honey_Bee1333 That's the point, they hate all those that don't validate them. Everything else is "hurting them" or somehow causing a so called genocide. Apparently the old woman at the end is "offended" by being polite and not wanting to take part in the pronoun cult whilst even so far as calling herself as part of the older generation in order not to make others feel bad. Their "suffering" is self inflicted and no amount of emotional blackmail should encourage you to sympathise with them. They push their own problems onto other people. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to take part or being recorded on camera. Recognise who the ones are that don't respect people's boundaries.

I'm only out to a few people, but I'm hoping to come out to more people soon, so hopefully I can get support experimenting with pronouns Thanks y'all!

19:17 OKAY. Okay okay OKAY. I am so ready to talk about this, I feel like I was made for this moment. Hear me out.
Today it’s increasingly accepted that gender is a construct, but it’s still a newer concept, so when I was explained the rationale around 10 years ago, my cis ass struggled to grapple with it, particularly because it felt like it was denying trans people their identity. I’d long accepted I had weak gender identity- I would have described myself as cis by default, but if you accept sex and gender are separate, and sexuality and gender are separate, and interests and gender are separate, I realized that gender couldn’t be a reliable predictor for any aspect of a persons life, and was therefore arbitrary, or if not exactly arbitrary, arbitrarily defined. Before I go further, I DO believe people identify with gender, sometimes very strongly, but people identify strongly with race too, and even nationality, and those are Obviously social constructs.
So even though it took me a long ass time to fully accept gender as a social construct, once I did, I chose to reject the foundational concept of gender on a personal level, and when I did, it changed how I felt ON that personal level. I went from mostly straight to properly pan, with some preferences, I more fully embraced my femininity, I AM trans, I am a little grossed out being lumped in with guys, but I wasn’t until my mental state changed.
BUT THAT SAID, I still code mostly masc- not exclusively, but I don’t owe anyone androgyny- so most of society treats me as male, and if I believe gender isn’t real, it follows any humanizing pronouns would be equally valid, so it’s I can imagine choosing he/him pronouns for convenience even though for me personally, it’s like an itchy sweater.
Like, if you call me he/him it’s fine, but even if *I* have rejected gender associations, I know *you* probably haven’t, and so when you use exclusively masculine pronouns, you are pushing me back into a box I reject, so if I know you enough to tell you I’m non-binary, it means a lot to me when you treat me as non-binary.
