When and How to use Sidechain Compression

- Here we learn how to use sidechain compression to create punch and clarity in instruments, when and how to apply it, and when not to use it. There are 1 million sidechain compression tutorials on the internet, but i find a lot of them are misinformed and vague. There are many applications for sidechain compression not just for kick and bass. You can even creatively duck sounds in rhythmic ways for extra movement in your mixes.

It is not often that I take time to comment but man.. this time, it is worth it! ... YOU ARE AN AWESOME COACH! ... I was knocking my head on the wall for years... records labels were telling me... "use sidechain!" you got a really nice song but...." Use a sidechain!" ...all the tutorials I watched online were hard to understand and I was ending up saying "to hell" ... but you did it man, you explained it in the way I needed to ear it! Sitting in the studio with my ref monitors ON I made real time tests with my own songs while listening and relooping your video over and over and now... you know what.... I GOT IT!!!!! Now I not only sound better, my bassline and synths give a lot more groove in my tracks! I subscribed and already searching for more material from you! Thank You!!
you one of the few creators who explain "WHY" versus how to do it. Appreciate it!
Instead of freq splitter, you can use Ableton stock plugin called "multiband comp" turn of the high's ;)
Another great tip for the comp setting are long attack for lush pads to get that future sounding vibe ...
why dont u uploads tutorials video bro u seem like u got some great knowledge
Multiband comp comes with phase issues so it's better not to use it for best quality
the sidechain comp already has the EQ option, to affect which freq spot you want
Great side-chaining tutorial. This channel rocks.
Really... u aaawesome.. plsss dont stop to post ur videos... u teaching really very nicely.. and when u teach ur music also nice.. some people when teach..their music gives irritation
One of the best music tutorial channels out there, always excellent
I've seen other videos teaching sidechain but none of the others explained it like you did. This was a masterclass!!!!
Very informative! Finally a crystal clear explanation of sidechain. Thank you!
Sublime. Clear, fast, obvious. You're the man.
You're a really good teacher. You explain everything very clearly and calmly. Thanks, man! You've just earned a new sub from Poland!
Love your instruction dude! Really make this music production so much better!
Thank You!! All your Videos are broken down to my level of understanding, big TIME "A,D,D". Can't wait for your Ableton Courses. Let's GO!
Thank you for this video! You deserve hella more views! your information is super solid and I really like that you don't try to just pander to the audience like other RUclipsrs and you stick with the information
You’re right. I’ve seen a lot of videos on how to side chain. This video gave me the best guidance. Thanks
Thank you for these! Your teaching style and diction is so impressive
Wow, once he dragged the compressor into the lows I really had an aha! moment. Sounds brilliant.
By far the best video I have seen on sidechain compression! Nice one!
Thanks a lot!!! You've changed my life! There are so many people talking about some functionalities. But they forget to tell why we should/shouldn't use it.
This is so wonderfully put together! Now it makes sense! Thanks!
You changed my life right now !
I've been into producing for 2 years now (don't know why i don't know about side chain, but it is what it is) and just finished a song with 110 sound chains, and i've been mastering it with my knowledge, which i guess was too shallow.
Now as my album is coming to a closure i'm just going around videos, learning how to properly master and this one was an eye opener. Nonetheless if someone would like to give me some feedback, write he mere or just type in "Nebula - Nemo Metodiev" and teach me there.
this has been one of the best videos Ive come across for music production. I will surely be watching more videos. thank you kind sir for your insights
Wow man we are really blessed have a person like you teaching the world>>> Big Ups from South Africa ! Love your videos
So happy i have discovered this chanel !

Good explanation with real-world examples, well done.
This was so incredibly helpful, thank you!
Love this! Thank you very much. This is super helpful information, keep it up!
you are an amazing resource! Thanks so much!
Great video. A lot of mixing tutorials I've been watching kinda just tell what to do and how to do it, but I think the key is knowing why.
Amazing explanation. Thank you.
Thanks for advancing my mixing by about 3 years with this video.
really awesome video. love these examples.
Brilliant video. Really clear explanation. Thanks a lot.
Just found your channel, really loving your explanations. Thanks!!
Thank you! Very good explanation
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen for this
Great lesson, thanks.
Holy shit this is gold. I was always wondering how to get that very specific "pulsating" sound, and knew it had to do with side-chaining, but you're so good at relaying that information. New sub
Excellent stuff.
Well worded and articulated.
Subscribed...
appreciate how you explain things man and picked up on exactly the missing bits from other stuff.
Commonsense yaaaaaaay
Thank you for the great video! Finally I have the feeling that I understand sidechain compression!

Thank you anthony, you continuously help me so much with my projects. I hope to one day meet ya:)

Great explanation. The extra head-room in total output alone is more that worth doing this.

Fantasic... so good
Great intro, you pulled me in.
that frequency note was really helpful thanks. was trying to side chain my tb 3(303) baseline cause I thought thats what one just does, side chain bass, and I could not hear much change.. obviously I need not :)
nice one, thanks man
Im hvng a whaow moment ...thanx Mabrada ...
very helpful!
very good tutorial: no water, every step is clear
AMAZING!
Cheers dude
Awesome!
Merci beaucoup !
You are one of my heroes. Papadosio is in my top five bands list! And I’m an old jazz fusion guy from the 70’s! You are way ahead of your years and I’m supporting you guys every way I can. But I can’t find the link to the frequency splitter. Is it expired?
Dude that frequency splitter is a game changer for me
That last example is really interesting. The EQ function on the Compressor acts as sort of a filter for which frequencies of the 'feed' audio are actually used by the Compressor to do the gain reduction... But by placing the entire Side-chain Compressor into the 'Frequency Splitter' it is acting as an EQ for which frequencies are gain reduced. Probably going to download that! :)
Also the "Synthwave" example was awesome. Amazing how a boring pad with a simple drum look can be made so vibey and dynamic. I like to think of Sidechaining as allowing for *silence* to become an instrument which you actively use.
(Boring pad composition*) Not trynna diss the sound lol it is good
thanks man!
thank u so so much bro my low end better
Thank you very so much for this excellent tutorial! Although I'm really fighting to hear any difference at the 5th & 11th minute (can't tell whether it's my generally flat headphones [Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 worth $250 - or my ears do need more training on the subtleties of sound engineering), but the information here is just wonderful. Thanks.
thanks bro
I really appreciate this tutorial. I've been checking out other videos about side chaining and they dont go into depth on the theory behind this technique. Keep your tutorials and discussions up man!
Mr. Seed. Great video., usual. I also just downloaded the freq. splitter. Btw, where should I save it?
Eye opening
Спасибо, брат)
where is the link for the frequency splitter? :) great video, keep up the work
Thanks for the tips and explanations! appreciate it, I would just say, it would help if, when you are A-B the on and off of the compressor, just do it, we can see the cursor, maybe when you say, here is with here is without, it distracts from hearing it properly. Just an observation. Thanks !
Really helpful video! Thanks man. Does anybody know how to get frequency splitter in cubase 10 pro?
You can also use EQ to remove that click sound from the bass.
7:25 "Sounds fantastic!" :D Love that comment!
For those clicks when the attack is short, using RMS mode instead of Peak mode does the job. I dont know if this has any downsides however.
❤️❤️❤️
do you find it necessary to sidechain the kick on other drum sounds like tom, snare, hats or other percussion like world drums for the kick to be super clear and crisp? I'm Using Maschine to record beats with multiple kits and trying to keep the kick sounding clean. I'm really trying to keep things as simple as possible so if i could just not side chain i would choose that. but it would be nice for my mixes to be loud....gah
Great video. Excellent instruction. What are the benefits of using the frequency splitter versus Ableton's stock multiband compressor? Thank you!
Robert Ryder it looks like there’s no huge difference, it’s an audio effect rack set up to be used as a multiband compressor
The frequency splitter website won't let me view the page, any ideas?
Does the EQ bit on the compressor affect the EQ of the incoming signal, or does it affect which frequencies are ducked?
Can you also just use EQ to hide the low end in that 3rd example?
Loved the tutorial in terms of the explanation, but even whilst listening with an expensive pair of Audio Technica's on, I couldn't really hear the difference in the kick with the sidechain compression on. Would this be because of the RUclips quality?
if i want a bassline in the beginning of my song without drums, how do i automate the sidechain so that i don't' have the clicks from compression in the beginning of the songs where drums aren't there
Does Papadosio use sidechain compression in a live setting? I'm working on project where I'd like to run a trigger from the kick and snare back into ableton for sidechaining during a live performance. Not sure the best way to do this. These videos are great! Thanks!
you could easily set this up live using the same style of routing. You would need to lower your buffer to perhaps 64 to get the compressor to act fast enough but it's very doable through ableton.
Make me think of Future Bass
Do you ever use the EQ for sidechain? I always turn it off and wonder if it's helpful for any specific reasons..
7:20 I heard a click with drums... abletons comressor from live 8 does not make any clicks....
