Sidechaining Explained - What It Is & Why You Need It!

  • This FL Studio beginner tutorial will teach you what sidechaining in music is, and why we use it. If you're a music producer then you need to know what sidechaining is, or sidechain compression which is the more correct term. Technically sidechaining can be used for a lot of stuff inside modern daws such as FL Studio, Ableton, Logic pro etc. That said, when people talk about sidechaining they are actually usually referring to sidechain compression, which is basically volume ducking, so that's what we're going to focus on in this video.
    When you mix and master music, you need to ensure that the kick and the bass don't interfere with each other. The tail of the kick will often be quite long, and when the bass comes in between the kicks these two elements will often overlap. Because the low-end is so powerful, this can often cause your mix to sound muddy or muffled. Sidechain compression can help avoid this by ensuring that the volume of the bass ducks to get out of the way of the kick. This ensures that your mix remains crisp and clean in the low-end as well. Mixing and mastering can be difficult, and it's important to be aware of the various mixing tools available to you as a music producer. Sidechaining is definitely among the most important tools available to you, so this is something you need to know if you want to succeed as a music producer.
    In this video, I'll explain in a simple way what sidechaining is and how it works.

    I just love the clarity with which you explain things, how you give examples, how you zoom in, how you use arrows, how you bring things into context. Seriously, not everyone does this. I knew I had to chain, but nobody made it clear to me it was to reduce mud and that it was specific to low frequencies. You bring things into context and explain how they are related to the bigger picture. So refreshing!

    Thank you. This is what I thought it was, but I am sick of all the other channels trying to show off with all the DAW tools and compressors trying to make this sound like rocket science, essentially it's volume automation to avoid overlaps.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  3 года назад +1

      You're welcome. Glad you liked it. Exactly, it's basically just volume automation, and you can either use a plugin to do the ducking at repeating intervals, which work very well for any four to the floor beat, or you can use a kick and a compressor linked together, so that it ducks the volume automatically every time the kick hits. It's not rocket science :)
      I think some people just like to make it sound harder than it really is so that they can get more watch time on their videos.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 лет назад

      You don't hear the difference even in the transients? In the first example with no siechain, the kick and the bass sounds more like one continuous "booming" sound. In the second, with sidechaining, you can clearly hear that they sound more like distinct individual sounds with more transients, and not just a smear.

  • @CasamTheAnimator
    @CasamTheAnimator Год назад

    However, even if you sidechain the bass,l to the kick, they still clash, because the tail of the kick is too long, so using transient processor, allows us to shorten the tail of the kick.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  Год назад

      Sidechaining is basically just automating the volume, so it actually doesn't matter how long the tail is, the sidechaining will lower the volume at the set point anyways, that's why it's so useful. It means that you don't have to tweak the kick tail manually. :)
      If you want to control your kick manually though, you can trim the tail manually using this method: ruclips.net/video/nuUe7dnrKaY/видео.html

    • @CasamTheAnimator
      @CasamTheAnimator Год назад

      @@FireWalkMusic I have seen that video.

    • @CasamTheAnimator
      @CasamTheAnimator Год назад

      @@FireWalkMusic It's important shorten the bassy tail of the kick, because that's what causes overlapping frequencies, so the volume envelope in the envelope section may help you take out all that bassy tail so the kick only has a hit.
      But here's how the kick is made, the kick consists of one oscillator, with the pitch automated with in envelope, it starts a high frequency, then goes down the lower frequency at the speed of light, which is what creates that hit, another thing they do is they also add white noise and automate the volume of it so it drastically gets plucked, which makes the kick hit more.
      And that's why the kick seems to have that long tail.

    Hey firewlak i got a question here, if the Lead and the Vocal occupy some same frequeny at the same, or the mid renge,like piano and vocal some elements, If it sounds muddy what should i do?SideChain?Or it has to be sidechain?Thanks: )

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Jack. Interesting question. This is something that can definitely happen, there's a few ways to deal with it. Sidechain can somewhat reduce the problem, but you can't use a sidechain plugin such as kickstart or lfotool for this. In this case, you will have to make ghost notes matching the vocal if you want to sidechain the vocal, or vice versa if you want to sidechain the leads. Then you have to sidechain the traditional way using a compressor, and then have the ghost notes trigger the sidechain so that the sidechain follows the melody and not just the four to the floor beat.
      A perhaps better solution would be to figure out exactly where the frequencies are clashing (try the mono trick) and then sidechain using peak controller and an EQ instead. That way you can sidechain the same way, but reduce only the affected frequencies instead of the whole thing.
      In situations like this when things are clashing, panning cal also help reduce the problem. Pan one slightly to the right and the other slightly to the left. You can also try stereo separation, which will delay the right signal vs the left or vice versa. That can also help levitate the problem.
      In some situations though the frequencies are so similar that no band aid will help. Some times, you just have to accept defeat and replace the leads. Some times it just doesn't work, no matter how much you want it to.
      In those cases, just try something else and move on. Don't spend days trying to fix something that can't be fixed. :)
      I hope this was helpful.
      Have a great day! :)

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 года назад +1

      You'll have to look up some tutorials for that. I don't use reason myself, but it's fairly similar in most daw. You make a "ghost" kick and link it to a compressor in order to do the sidechaining. You can also use plugins such as LFOtool, kickstart etc if you're using a standard four to the floor kind of beat.

    Sir what does synthesiser mean & how it works?

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  7 лет назад +1

      It's a device that creates sounds. a VST is just a software emulation of that device.
      From wikipedia: A synthesizer (often abbreviated as synth, also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through instrument amplifiers and loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers may either imitate instruments like piano, Hammond organ, flute, vocals; natural sounds like ocean waves, etc.; or generate new electronic timbres.

      Well, first you have to figure out the tempo of the original song, and then match the project tempo to that tempo. Then you have to sync the beat to that tempo. After that is done you can change the tempo if you wish.

    Sidechaining vocals?? 🤔

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 лет назад

      Vocals actually tend to be slightly sidechained in a lot of genres these days. Some times just the very low end of the vocals are sidechained, while the higher frequencies are left alone, so there's no rule that says that you can't sidechain vocals. :)
      It all depends on the music of course. You wouldn't use it in a acoustic sounding track for example, but in a very busy mix it might be needed if you have a deep male voice and you struggle to get the low end to come through.
      The only rule in music production is that there is no rules. :D

    i don't like that you only briefly covered the actual meaning of sidechaining in your info but your whole video is just spreading the ducking-lie that everyone already believes in anyway. why do you do that? what's the purpose of making an educational youtube channel if you don't show them what it really is even though you know it?

      Hi, I decided to put the footnote into the description in order to not confuse people more than necessary. Sidechaining can be used for a lot of things, but at least 90% of the time it will be used for volume ducking, and when anyone says you need to sidechain that bass, everyone will think of volume ducking. It's like when someone says "Google it!" they mean that you should search for something, but technically speaking, google is a lot more than just a search engine. Sidechaining has become a terminology in much the same way. Kind of slang for volume ducking.
      As a RUclipsr, I need to do research to figure out what people search for and what info they expect to find from what they search for. In about 100% of the time, when people, and especially beginners, want to know about volume ducking, they will be searching for "sidechaining" "how to sidechain" "how to sidechain bass" etc.
      Now, I could of course have started the video explaining what sidechaining really is, and then moved on to the actual intent to use the sidechaining for volume ducking, but that would confuse a lot of beginners. Many of them would just leave the video at that point, and some would end up more confused than they were before they came, since a lot of these people think of volume ducking as sidechaining. I wanted to teach them how to do volume ducking, and knowing that most of them will search for sidechaining, that's what I did. My main goal was to teach people HOW TO accomplish the task they were searching for.
      But as you say, I'm also well aware that sidechaining is not just volume ducking, so I put that into the description. My main goal was not to confuse people more than necessary. I have a friend who gave up music production because he could never figure out how to use sidechaining the old school way with a compressor. He didn't understand what it was for and how it worked, even after watching a lot of videos. Everyone told him "you need to sidechain it!" That's why I made this video, and after watching it, he finally understood it. The last thing I wanted was to confuse him by saying that everything you think you know about sidechaining is wrong, because it's not just volume ducking etc etc.. I'm pretty sure that right there and then, he would just close the video and say: ok, that' sit for me.. :)
      I totally understand your point, and it's a valid one. But it's a hard choice to make when you make a video like this. Do you want to be 100% accurate and risk spreading more confusion? Or just show people how to do what they came to know? I decided to just show people how to do what they searched for, and then make a separate video instead about the misconceptions surrounding the topic. :)

    This is really informative but is soooo boring!!! It’s 2020 why does this video feel like it’s from 2001. Also very redundant, I learned my lessons half way through the video.
