Who the heck complained? I love when you explain shit, you're good at it.
GOAT. finally someone who understands how to explain side chain properly. The only person who can articulate this and I’ve been searching. You simplified this sooo much. It’s like people aren’t trying to teach when they make these videos. This was educational
I’m excited to hear it. I agree there is a lot of confusion on the inter web
Joe……..I really enjoy your talking, explaining and your jokes. It sticks in my memory. I’ve been recording for years and never understood side chaining, but the first 3 minutes of this video and your drawings made it clear to me. I so appreciate you Joe. Your are an excellent teacher, and you spend all this time and effort sharing your wisdom for free! What? You are a blessing brother!
I appreciate what you said at the start, Joe. Understanding concepts and generalisations has helped my mixing more than specifics to the dB and millisecond. Thank you for your PSA.
I don't know why it's been sooo... foggy and hard to understand I'm my brain, but... this is by far the most clear explanation of sidechaining I've come across. Thank you.
Especially in explaining the "why" behind sidechaining so that it's not just senselessly put everywhere.
Where would we be without Joe to explain things so clearly and concisely, yet so entertainingly as well? Joe, you’re the absolute best.
I love how you emulate sounds with your voice. Demonstrates the concept and is fun too.
I like the "learning" approach.. i need the most basic info i can get to help me wrap my head around what I'm actually controlling, in addition to how to turn it's knobs!
Damn…I think I understand this now. Thanks so much, Joe!
Hi Joe. This is the first time I have ever watched one of your videos. I subscribed at 3:42 of this video and will finish it out after this comment. Just want you to know, there is something about your explanation that just hits home... and I absolutely love your style of teaching. Thank you!
Thanks Todd.
I don't always watch your videos just to learn technical concept of making music. I also click your videos to listen your advices that motivate and inspire me in a creative way.
Joe "Less people die in the studio" Gilder
I'm quite certain he emphsized the "Less"...
Which is most accurate.👍
Finally, a video with an explanation on why we do what we do. Too many people just show us what to do but not why.
Joe……Joe……. 🐐 status confirmed. This is the BEST explanation of side-chaining I’ve ever watched. Bless you sir.
Maestro, It's you again. Thank you for all you do for us. And, Your talk is really Important, we learn.
I like your teaching. It is simple and approachable.
lol No complaints about talking too much from this cat. This is like the 5th video on sidechaining I tracked down because I still can't figure out what the heck it is. And you explained it (unlike all the others) within the first couple of minutes. Awesome video!! Thanks a bunch 🤩
Excellent explanation of side-chaining, which I've always heard about but never explored!
I’m five years late, but you talk all you want Joe. You have been the biggest help! You are also very personable. Feels like I’m hanging with my smart musician friend that knows all the tech stuff🤘
I love all the details you give. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so the more the better! Thank you!
How are you this good at explaining things and making them so comprehensible…Youuu are the BEST
Another great video, Thank You Joe!
"less people die in the studio...." 🤣Joe you're a hoot.
I love the details Joe! Keep on the great work!
Great! Thanks Joe.
Love Joe's videos, he explains things so well and makes them interesting with a natural vibe. Big thumbs up Joe.
great vid, thank you Joe!
Thank you Joe! You rock!!🤘🎶
Thanks Joe! Great teaching.
Thank you for the video. Blessings!
Fantastic explanation. Thank you.
Thanks, Joe, yours is the best (that works for me) info on "side-chaining" I have watched.
This has gotta be my favourite mixing technique! Side-chaining sends is such a great way to liven things up but avoid a muddy mix. I’ve even used this same technique on giant reverbs
very thorough. thank you so much
And once again you helped me a lot. Thanks, Joe!
Well said! Keep teaching.
Still one of the best Sidechain videos out there. Love to see you update it with some of the new S1 features.
Thank you for making this easy to understand! Good Video!
You’re doing great. You talk exactly the amount of time need and clearly understandable. Don’t change a thing. Thanks for your awesome work.
Thank you! One of the best videos on sidechain: loved the visual aides and the easy to overstand explanation. I finally get it!
Probably the best description for side chain compression !!! Thankyou so much Joe !!!
Well done, Joe!
Brilliant video - it's been a great help with one of my recent mixes
So good, Joe. Again!! 😁👍
Great explanation Joe 👍
very well done ----- good teaching
Joe what a great video! This is fantastic. I really appreciate the fact that your explanation provides us not only the "How" but also the wisdom of "When". It's 2 for the price of 1 and you shared it for free! That's worth its weight in gold. Thanks brotha.
Context and explanations at the start are great! Very helpful for those who need it. Don't need it? Just jump ahead!
You rule Joe! Thanks for so many helpful vids!
I like the fact that you talk a lot, it's always very informative, and good to know the theory before you put it into practice.
Fantastic Video!
A really great video!! Super explanation - many thanks
Your channel is a god send, man. Thanks so much!
Thanks Joe. Another great example of of how to make a cool use of delay or other effect with sidechaining.
Thanks for the awesome tip
THANK YOU, times 100000000000000 for simplest and best explanation!!!
This pre-fader thing is really useful, I have watched a bunch of videos looking for this option before you have explained it
Joe Gilder and Warren Huart are my favorite go to!
Hi Joe and nice to meet you. Your tutorials are so interesting and usefull! Thank you so much!
This information is key to better mixing .....THANK YOU !!!!!!
iI HAD to subscribe to this guy.He breaks things down top a whisper. GOOD JOB.
OMG. Thanks Joe G !
Interesting. I'm going to try that. Thanks for sharing.
Great explanation and demo!
Thanks Joe, I just left a video that had no explanation. I really needed to know what the heck SC was. I like to be educated, keep it up!
Thanks for explaining the "why"....OK, just subscribed because you explained hi-hat/gate/synth so well I understood it for the first time. Thanks!
thank you! very easy to understand something that was confusing
Man joe.... I was wondering about this. Thx alot
It is really helful for me alot. i'm new to midi. I really appreciate for your all contents.
Even tho I am little old(over 40s) to start something new.
wanna say thank you!!
Now I clearly understand, thank you!
I legit laughed hard and had to pause the video when you said “now...less people die...” 😂😂😂
I AGREE WITH " INSIDE THE MIRROR'S " AND OTHER'S COMMENTS JOE ! AS A RECORDING ENGINEER IT'S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROCESS INVOLVES.
WE LEARNED OUR A B C BEFORE MAKING WORDS - RIGHT ? ? ? KEEP UP YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEOS PLEASE JOE. BEST REGARDS - EDDIE.
I goofing around the other day and used a sidechained expander on a delay/reverb track so that as the music gets louder the effects come in stronger so that it doesn't get completely lost. So when the music is softer the expander "compresses" the effects. I'm sure someone has done this before but I thought it was pretty clever.
Thank you,
Thank you
Great, informative. The doctor analogy is really appropriate and I am guilty of just wanting a 'click here, do this' due to laziness, but now I am keen to try sidechaining with understanding. Thanks.
Ok, shut the front door! lol. I am so excited, thank you! I have literally been trying to achieve this type of delay on my vox, and the only way I could figure out to do it was to slice up the audio and add 'Event FX' onto the last word of a phrase etc. This is so helpful! xoxo
As an electronic music teacher, I also teach sidechaining (of course XD) but I must admit your video is really well thought and the Side chaining concept is clearly and cleverly explained ! Bravo !
See brother I understand you. when i try to explain things ppl I kinda get the same vibes. You just keep doing good work. I loved your tutorial.
I like the way you teach
Muito obrigado pela aula, amigo. Eu aprendo muito contigo.
"Thanks a lot for teatching, pal. I realy learn with you!"
I've used side chaining (*very* discreetly, like 1-2dB of reduction) for lead vocal vs. music as well. It helps get that slight edge of intelligibility in cases of a thick arrangement where you still want the vocal to subtly come out a hair more.
I've never completely understood side chaining, but this video helps. I use Pro Tools, which has the same capabilities, but I'm still in the dark about some stuff regarding side chaining. This video helped bring me farther out of the darkness.
Great song
That really helps
Thank you
Great video. The only thing that I was missing was the role of attack and release parameters of the compressor to shape the delay.
Great intro!
amazing explanation!
That's the best high hat I have heard. I could use that as a sample!!! Thx for the vid. Good info here.
...top explained, thank you Joe!!!
Great tip about the delay compression!
Yes it would help me
Keep talking bro. Your videos are super helpful.
Thanks!
Bruh ive been trying to figure out what side chaining is for like 2 hours, all i needed was your paper diagram at 2:35 😅 thanks muhc appreciate
"Less people die in the studio..." I died laughing :)
very well explained Joe, keep on talking!
“...less people die...”
LOL! :P
I'd like to offer my input on the whole sidechaining thing:
I like to think of sidechaining as being similar to a feature that's seen on some karaoke machines. Some karaoke machines have a feature where when you sing into the microphone that's hooked up to the machine (or really any sound you make with the microphone, for that matter), it will push down the volume of the music, and then when the sound from the microphone stops, the volume of the music is pushed back up again. So your singing into the microphone would essentially be "sidechaining" the karaoke track to make your voice sound like it's front and center, much like how a kick drum could sidechain synthesizer sounds to make the kick drum sound like it's front and center. So it's similar to what you explained in the beginning of this video (with the DJ on the radio talking into a mic and his voice lowering the volume of the music).
ayo, that song i looked up is actually crackin. mixed well!
