Hi Joe, may I suggest in your master buss, set your master fader to -6 db when playback is on, then put in the limiter at the end, with no increase with the input knob on the limiter. Place the ceiling at -1.00.....Next turn the limiter threshold counter clock wise until you reach the level (in the master buss section ) to zero. now you have the correct output level. Give it a try, works great for me in "Studio One". Different strokes for different folks !
The reason I love this channel is because I am a studio one user and you always do tutorials using stock plugins. A tutorial using a $200 plus plugin does not help me unless I am rich enough to she'll the money out for that same plugin. Thanks Joe.
I'll join the many other commenters here and say a big thank you to Joe Gilder for this video. I've been recording for a little over a year now, using StudioOne, and this is one of the most useful and clearly explained videos I've seen yet for StudioOne. I've been wondering why my songs were so quiet compared to other music I listened to online, and now I know. Very much appreciated!
Great video and yes I think we can all remember scratching our heads wondering why our favourite records were so much louder! Thanks for making the video!
I like the hard drum sound you can get by stacking 2 or three of these limiters. 20 to 30 ms release and 3/4 db max reduction on each of 3 limiters. Kick and snare take a big jump forward in the mix using this in parallel with the dry signal.
Love your videos Joe. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Hey, Yazoo huh!?! Did you ever know Linus Hall from Yazoo? I lived in Nashville TN and met Linus there. I actually painted his house as he was developing his brew. Now he sells it as Yazoo craft beer! This was back late 90's...
Joe... do yo realize what you and Grahama are doing?!?!? You are teaching all of us something unique that until now only really really prepared people in expensive studios could do! THANK YOU!!! I owe everything I know to you two.
I've been watching your videos for years and using Studio One. Thanks for all the tips! When I heard you say that you were from Yazoo City, a town I used to play music venues quite frequently, I wondered if you and I had ever crossed paths? keep up the great work!
you should really mention headroom and frequencies below 30hz taking all the headroom although its not perceptibly audible. There is more to increasing volume than just throwing on a limiter, which as a brick wall compressor will potentially destroy the dynamics of the song. On another note, its also very important that nothing clips pre master bus and on the master bus
Hehe printed labels from a home printer on a homemade CD :)) Don't be too hard on your first album, it's the best and most magical part of your long journey through your music life, it's super romantic and sentimental for me even if technically it's worth nothing...
Hey Joe. I've been mixing for awhile now. I am new to Studio One. I got into this when I inherited a Music engineering Course as the "teacher". Thank you soooo much for all of your information! Incredibly helpful!
I really like your method Joe. The K14 meter method is a good way to add some consistency to the settings. Maybe your CD was a quiet mix, at least you did something productive in high school. Not so sure I did much but barely attempt to learn.
Thought I had a mix done yesterday, but I came up against the volume problem...again! After doing some quick research I used a limiter to make some adjustments this morning, with improved volume. After watching this video I'll sit back down with the mix one more time to try to get those volumes where I want them with the limiter before I let the song leave the nest for good. Thank you.
great job I want to thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us, the people and doing it with a lot of clarity, sincerity and honesty. you are brilliant.
Hey Joe, This video of yours was really helpful and appreciated. I was able to get improved sound levels exporting my files and the sound levels was just as great when listen using other modes of playback 👏
Very good explanation. I never would have thought to try out the K-14 and K-20 when previously attempting this. I'm actually quite new to all of this, so my question might sound very silly. When I use the limiter, I can't tell if it muffles up the audio slightly and looses a bit of its punch or if that is just me going crazy!
Train your ears,I don't know if you already fix it,coz 7months passed by up to this moment am currently editing this comment, much love from East Africa Tanzania🇹🇿
@MiffedCrew No, you're making good use of your ears. Limiting and heavy compression in general will naturally cut off the highest treble frequencies of whatever it's affecting. The more you limit, the more "squished" it'll sound. That's why good balancing and EQ is very important: if you do it right, it will all glue together once you apply your limiter. If something is off (if parts of the frequency spectrum are too loud or too quiet) then it'll sound too squished and undefined.
Mmmmm, that's very helpful! I used to use limiter (fab filter) but i used to make adjustments based around loudest part of my songs. Still using that k-14 thing around 0 db. Now i know, thanks :)
"Hello, again Joe, I have another question I forgot to ask you in the previous message". "The question I have is, as a rule of thumb usually if you are recording from a commercial source you would record at 0db BUT what would you record at for analog recording?". "would it be the same 0db OR 2 to 4 0db if the signal is weak?". "I would GREATLY APPRECIATE your help & knowledge of this question plus previous question". "Also in this video, the same thing happened to me as happened to you". "I had made a friend a mixed CD that sounded good to me & seemed to play at the normal volume of loudness". "When my friend played it back in his car he said "The volume level was way too low even when he cranked it". "He said, "The mix was good but he liked it loud like most do today". "Anyway, it was embarrassing to me so I know the way you felt".
Joe, you just helped me"Spread my wings and fly" with my audio volume! 😂😂 Seriously though, thanks much for sharing this tip. I am new to Studio One and mixing and I'm going to check out Dueling Mixes!!
Hey Joe . Just a thought . . . . . Consider redoing those earlier songs - with your skills and life experiences today . Really like the videos - very inspirational.
Nope. I'm against re-doing old work. I'd much rather write new music and record. See, that music is a snapshot of where I was as a musician. I've not only improved as a recording engineer, but I've also improved as a musician and songwriter. So I'd rather record betters songs from all the improving I've done over the years.
Except for the volume, your high school song is pretty good! You should've heard my high school songs, and for the first couple years after. The lyrics were so kid-like: "There's nothing I can do. I've been waiting for this time to come. I'll be leaving this school soon........" LOL! Plus my voice is nowhere near the quality of yours. You should still be proud of what you wrote & recorded back then!!!
The limiter also doesn't make my songs loud enough. I have the LUFS level where I need it, and the overall volume right around 0dB. I just saw a video that says SATURATION on individual tracks, to control dynamics, is the first key to overall loudness. He played things with saturation & bypassed. With the saturation ON, the track sounded louder, yet it was showing an overall lower volume on the meter!!!
Ha, ha, man. The same thing happened to me years ago. I was listening to my final product in my brother's big audio system with a question mark on my face: How can I frigging make this thing sound louder? Till I found out just what you just said. I'm not alone. Thanks again.
Hi Joe, I subscribed to your channel. Very helpful video. Wonderful contrast comparing one of your first and last recording. Progression is life is the best thing! See you at the next video! Cheers from the Netherlands!
Newbie question - you suggest to put the Limiter in the Main channel. Do you place it in the Inserts or in Post? Does it matter? Thanks for your time and your wonderful videos!
I say keep it quiet and dynamic. If your going to use a limiter only kiss it (2 to 4 dB reduction) to keep the dynamics in your music. If your going to convert your files to mp3 (which you most likely are) then keep the ceiling at -1.5 dB My thoughts - thanks for sharing mvh
Why do you say that? Genuinely curious. I think I understand lightly limiting to balance volume and dynamic range, but what about the MP3 and curling thing? Anyway would really appreciate an explanation. : ) Have a good day.
Just found your channel, Joe! I am now an EXCITED new subscriber 😁 you remind me of myself in a way... we make the MOST of everything we have instead of spending incredible amounts of money on loads of expensive equipment. Keep up the good work! I am excited to watch the rest of your videos. IT’S BINGE TIME!
Thanks, Joe. I love your Studio One tutorials. I have used the limiter several times, but did not know the difference between K20 and K14, and really had no bench mark for how loud was loud enough. I like how you used one of your your first mixes to demonstrate how effective the limiter can be, and how to avoid over limiting. Loudness matters, but not in the way most modern music is loud. Today's radio is filled with slammed mixes that are little more than white noise. How would you approach using the limiter in a mastering situation?
Agreed. I approach mastering kinda the same way. I may go a little louder, loudest parts solidly in the red part of the K14 meter, but I don't like to go super loud.
Nice video thanks for taking the time to explain. Have a dumb n00b question - I have a electronic drum module that has some pretty neat Compression and EQ features on it for the drum bus and I'm wondering - if I set my compressor Threshold to 0.0 dB, 1:1 ratio, the fastest attack (5 ms) and release (20 ms), and only play with the Output Gain slider, is that in effect making it a Limiter? Or is that called something else when I set those parameters that way? Keep rockin!
Any idea why when I bring in a wav into studio one 5 & export to mix down w/o any processing the newly mixed down wav file is -8db lower than the original wav file…
Thank you Joe. I have learned so much from your videos. I'm glad I have found some one that actually shows how to do things without going so fast I can't even follow the cursor. I you belonged to Patreon as a creator I could afford to help you with 1or 2 dollars a month. Being on Social Security sucks.

How do you set up buss tracks?
@@RGE_Music highlight or select target channels in the mix tab, right click and choose "add bus for selected channels".
Hey can u explain that again sounds really dopeeee
And where can we buy this limiter
@@vxllzbeatz its in Presonus . See my comment above>
The high school song is actually good.
Ikr? He kept trashing it and I'm like dude it sounds like most stuff from the early 2000s... 😋
It's really pretty bad it's like an impression of a song
Joe, I had a pastoral ministries professor at Bible College in Texas, Dr. Davis. He was from Yazoo City, Mississippi. Small world!
The reason I love this channel is because I am a studio one user and you always do tutorials using stock plugins. A tutorial using a $200 plus plugin does not help me unless I am rich enough to she'll the money out for that same plugin. Thanks Joe.
I agree with you on that.
Yes, so true. Your own mix quiet and then a commercial track comes on afterwards and stamps on it. Great video. Love from London.
I'll join the many other commenters here and say a big thank you to Joe Gilder for this video. I've been recording for a little over a year now, using StudioOne, and this is one of the most useful and clearly explained videos I've seen yet for StudioOne. This early recording shows one thing more than anything. What great singer you were back then already, Joseph
:) Thanks Willi.
Great video and yes I think we can all remember scratching our heads wondering why our favourite records were so much louder! Thanks for making the video!
I am blown away how much difference there is in your speaking and singing voices. as in extremely impressed.
Love your sense of humor and of course your way of teaching.
The bad mix of the high school song actually has a vibe to it. Like, a raw, warm vibe.
Consistently the best teacher I have come across . Thanks Joe
Thanks so much for the info! Looking forward in using studio one 5 , with all my samplers and drum machines / keyboards
I like the hard drum sound you can get by stacking 2 or three of these limiters. 20 to 30 ms release and 3/4 db max reduction on each of 3 limiters.
Kick and snare take a big jump forward in the mix using this in parallel with the dry signal.
@joe it makes sense
to work this way
Love your videos Joe. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

This has honestly helped me take my music to the next level.

clear as usual thank you Joe.. cheers from Paris
The old song isn't that bad. :). Cool tips.
:)
That’s what I was gonna say. Sounds great!
Agreed! Sounded good to me!
Joe that Gandalf ref just gained you 10k cool points in my book. You frikin rock star you. Thanks for the continuously excellent content!

So you started as Joey, went to Joseph and ended up as Joe. That's acceptable.
Joe I grew up right down the road from you in Flora MS. Great videos! They’ve helped me a lot.
Joe, your videos lately have been so helpful....this was especially, thank you
Good to hear! Thanks Stephen

Thank you so much Joe. You just did answer to my prayers. I also use Studio One. The K-14 is my answer. Keep rocking. You just gained a sub.
Thank you very much, Mr. Gilder!
THANK YOU! I have been looking for how to do this, but all the other videos are way to complicated to follow
Great HighSchool Song ! Great Music Great Work !
Thanx a lot, Joe, I like you video about Studio One! Best regards! )
Your an amazing teacher!! Your videos are helpful for all musicians at all stages of their journey! Thank you brother
Hey Joe, This video of yours was really helpful and appreciated. I was able to get improved sound levels exporting my files and the sound levels was just as great when listen using other modes of playback 👏
Your videos are so helpful man, thank you!
Thanks for this one Joe! Great content (as usual), and love the Gandalf-comparison! :) Really enjoy your videos, informative with loads of humor.
Thanks Daniel
thanks,, you're tutorials are a nice length, and easy to understand,,also great to see the mic at the right level for a sound tut,
I really appreciate ur knowledge n jewels that u give us .... thanks 💯😎💪🏾
#studioOne
I just saved the pre set your shared with us. Joe Gilder limiter set up.. this is great explanation!
Rock on!
i wish i could listen to your 1st album, it's like in the era of america, csny and seals n crofts . simple and dreamy music.
Very good explanation. I never would have thought to try out the K-14 and K-20 when previously attempting this. I'm actually quite new to all of this, so my question might sound very silly. Perfect timing on this video Joe. I am finishing up tracking on my 1st EP, thanks to you and Graham.
Way to go!
Will definitely try it. Hope we have some k level meters in FL Studio limiters
Which of your online course should you recommend for beginners like me?

joe thanks a lot please more on EQ comp.limiter and reverb
Great video, thank you very much for the help 👍

I see where you're coming from, it's like a mix of grunge and boy band!
Except for the volume, your high school song is pretty good! You should've heard my high school songs, and for the first couple years after. The lyrics were so kid-like: "There's nothing I can do. Do you have something on spotify ? I heard whitewash... I liked it... Now I heard the whole album... I liked it
Joe, you are ctill clipping the tops of your wav file in your latest song. That will reduce your dynamics.
Yeah that's called mastering.
The limiter also doesn't make my songs loud enough. I have the LUFS level where I need it, and the overall volume right around 0dB. Hey bro..why are you making your monitor standing ? They are meant to be tilted I think .
Great tutorial, very useful, thank You so much!!
Thanks a lot Joe!!!
Great info bro, thanks. Question......does this technique apply to other genres as well?
the first song is really good. Did you ever go back an remix it with your current skills?
What is the name of limiter You used in this tutorial? By the way good job! :)
Awesome.. where can I find the video on how to master ?
Thanks
Oh my gosh! Thank you!
Another good video Joe.
Nice song

I finally resolved the mystery of the limiter !!! Thanks to your explanation
Bro thank you!! I almost gave up on engineering and making music I really appreciate it ✊🏼🤟🏽
Boy!! You can saaaaang!!❤
This vid was a big help. Thank you Joe!!!!
Welcome!

than you very instructive and useful.
Does that work in Studio one Artist or just the pro version?
This is all I needed.... Thanks so much 😎🙏
Thanks so much great info! But one question which template did you click on to get where you’re at?
Great video, thanks much!
Hey Joe, thanks a lot bro for that information!!! It answered some questions i had in my head for the longest. PEACE
