There's also an option for Recording to Layers! Hit the settings gear in the transport at the bottom of the screen and click Record to Layers. This allows you to record each layer without having to create a new layer each time. If you record it will automatically make a new one

Thank you for that comment. I was just looking for a way to do that because the way it is presented here and is by default it is useless to me. I usually am behind a mountain of gear when recording and having to reach the computer to create new layers before each take doesn't make any sense.

Coming from Cubase, where it's called lanes. I just put it in loop and record three takes, without stopping. Then, I comp straight from the lanes. Does recording to layers allow you to do that?

    • @shout64

So, at 8:44 magic appeared! If you didn't record multiple takes at a time (i.e. a studio session), but rather recorded different Live performances (i.e. concerts, church services, or sessions).... How would you pull in a 2nd song take from a different recording and Convert it to Layers?
To elaborate: Say you have 2 concerts and you're editing the full band, and you want to merge the best sections of each song. So, you pull the 2nd set of tracks (concert 2) below the first set of tracks (concert 1). How do you convert the 2nd recording of band tracks to become the 2nd Layer?

Please move "layers follow selection" to preferences or give us the option to have it off as default. If you forget to turn it off and you edit something on the top layer, you will edit the rest of them without seeing it. But more crazy, if you make a template with "layers follw selection" off and you duplicate the track, S1 will turn it on again on the new track. That's plain crazy and not useful at all. I totally LOVE S1 and I use it every day, but I hope they will fix this in the next update.

It gave me preroll and auto punch, we could do As Many Takes As We Needed, hit Spacebat to Stop and it Automatically popped open All the Punches in their Own Track Already Routed. You can immediately see the tracks not finished or started late and ignore or delete them. No extra drop down menu waste of time. This was Great and very usable way of working. I have a Behringer UM2 and MS Windows 10 and the free StudioOne version and find it impossible to use the same mic input on the Behringer for inputs to both StudioOne and OBS when I want to record a Windows Capture type recording. It's probably my lack of knowledge, but might it not be possible? It seems that StudioOne wants to take over the audio input and not share it with other software.

But a long time ago I used an old version of Cubase that let you set loop points, and you could record until your hard drive busted, and it would auto create a new layer every time it reached the end of the loop. Hi Joe, enjoying all your stuff, but I have a question: I'm pretty new to using DAWs and come from the digital 'Portastudio' world where the machines I used had a facility that was usually called "Optimise". This was a way of getting rid of all the unused/unnecessary stuff and save a hell of a lot of disk space. I can't find an easy way to do this on S1. I have recently recorded a song where I had done the vocal 20 times and the bass 30 times etc, but I only want to keep the top layer of all these tracks. As I said, on my old multi-track machines these could all be deleted at the touch of a button and you'd see the size of the files more than half. Could you explain how this is done in S1?
Thanks and keep up the great work

What if I'm recording multitrack drums and I want to go between takes/layers for all the drum tracks at once? I usually record entire takes and just pick the best one instead of mixing and matching the best sounding parts of each take.
EDIT: I just watched to the end of the video and you completely answered my question! Luckily I kept watching till the end haha
