Purple Haze | Tommy Emmanuel (Tommy's Reddit Request #3)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- In 2011, Tommy Emmanuel asked Reddit to suggest songs for him to arrange on guitar. The response was huge and very friendly! So here is the third arrangement - "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix, played on a custom Larrivee guitar which was given to Tommy as a gift by Jean Larrivee himself. These were made for fun, as a gesture of appreciation to all music lovers out there!

Jae-Min Seo i would be too
I'd love it too. I don't think Tommy would though. I'd be there every day waiting on him to come out and play some more of whatever the hell he felt like playing.
Jae-Min Seo yeah. That sounds like a home invasion waiting to happen.

That airbend tho
He plays the acoustic the way most of us play air guitar ! The invisible whammy bar was epic though !
lmao. good catch

Ahahaha i think me too
I went to a concert when i was 12 to see James Morrison, trumpet player, as was I. Tommy Emmanuel was playing with him. I left that night a guitarist. I'm now 48, have played in 5 bands own 14 guitars and still play guitar live now, Tommy you sir changed my life in 2 hours.
Those two guys jamming casually in Adelaide. Two Great musicians.
Beautiful
Man, that's cool! And what can you advise me, as an inexperienced guitarist, to do to improve my skills? How did you become a professional?
@user-zc4rn8no1j Just play everyday! That's the only advice I can give, there no shortcut.
That's actually the biggest legacy such people leave. Bigger than the recordings and videos. And now, you might inspire somebody else. And so on...
Do not be discouraged by Mr. Emmanuel and quit playing guitar, but let this be an influence and inspiration to your guitar journey.
too late... killed myself hearing this :D
I've been playing for 10 years, I could never ever play like this. I can barely play a song at all.
@@smoothinvestigator for 5 of those years, they've been pretty consistant. For the past year I dedicate about 1 to 3 hours playing 2 pentatonic scales and c major scale, and songs or parts of songs I know. I "can" play a few songs, but they sound like shit and my picking falls apart at some points, so I can consider it actually being able to play a song. Surprisingly, Barr cords arent an issue for me but a get a knot in the palm area between my thumb and index. I'm kind of at a lose. I dont have a learning disability or anything of the sort, I was able to learn woodwind instruments just fine. Unrelated but I figured with a sorta high IQ I wouldve been able to figure it out, but man is it confidence destroyer whenever I pick my guitars up. Thankfully I'm stubborn but I've kinda of just expected to never be able to play, while still hoping something changes with practice. P.s. oh dont let me get started on finger picking, next to impossible with any finger besides my index
@@smoothinvestigator as for focus, I'm not sure. My focus is just for little improvements here and there, I dont go jumping from one play style to another, or one technique to another on the same day.
@@smoothinvestigator I can play lots of songs and I've been playing for years. I even do some solos but I learned them all from tabs. I could never play like this as I don't understand how. I need a lesson of some kind to teach me some music theory. And I've been in heavy metal bands played songs by Pantera and Metallica even some of their solos but I can't do it myself because I don't know how it's done. It just doesn't click.
Tommy Emmanuel is NOt in the Roling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. :D:D:D
This ranking is such a joke.
If they can't sell it they will no list it
+Rotzloeffi
+Rotzloeffi I couldn't believe that either. It just makes no sense to not put him somewhere in the list.

+tristannolan85 Well I really dont give a shit about their list because, as I said, it is a joke. tommy has fifteen fingers on the right hand, only five visible...
It would seem so, but he has 4 fingers and a thumb like everyone else. However, he uses his thumb as much as his fingers to play the bass notes with. Watch him play, and you'll see him curl his thumb on the E and A strings all the time.

There are a lot of great guitarists out there, and even though some are at the same technical level, I don't think I've seen any with this combination of chops, rhythm, showmanship and pure, unbridled guitar joy. I've never seen this guy just going through the motions.
Ever heard of someone from Texas I used to know?
Stevie Ray Vaughan?
Or maybe a friend of his, whom I was blessed to see 3 times before the vax took him from us?
Jeffery Arnold Beck?
Let's not forget the songs author - Jimi
Find something Live that's boring, I dare ya!
There's 3 that are never ever ever boring
No lawn mowing
Jeff said if he wasn't making mistakes he wasn't doing his job, which he saw as giving it everything he had.
Stevie used to say he played like he was breaaking out of jail- he tried to play as if every note was going to be the last thing he ever played.
Just like Tommy, no lawn mowing.
At times it's more like ripping the strings off.
Fearless
And no matter how 'outside' they get, they are ALWAYS back on the 1.

So what you're saying is that Tommy is old?
Small little kid at 17? What the fuck?
Jimmy’s like, “Hey man, how do you play that part?”
Actually good joke
I think you're getting a little carried way there. There's a reason Jimi preferred a strat to an acoustic, and this is an excellent example why.
@@louissmith5298 it's a joke, and tommy is a better guitarist than jimi objectively.
@@leeonardodienfield402 Yeah didn't realise it was a joke but there are some really fanatical Emmanuel fans who might genuinely think that. Tommy isn't even the best guitarist in his family rip Phillip who was a mind blowingly great guitarist.

I just told my guitar that it has seriously disappointed me.
And then it packed up it's shit and left you for Tommy.
🤔🤣
When he started playing, I looked, and said 'wait, that's not how you play...', and then it sounded great. It's a totally new arrangement that I haven't heard anyone use before - of the millions of covers and tutorials on this song. It really captures the melody and harmony that were not in the original lead.
Yeah, I wouldn't have recognised it as Purple Haze, but it was beautiful to listen to (and watch) ! :)
Its more like “inspired by”...😂
Me as well for a second, but I love his arrangement.
Now try it left handed. :)
Don't look at this and think: " I'll never be as good as him". Look at this and think: "I will practice to one day be just as good as him". Just believe in your ability to play the guitar and believe in yourself. Put in the the work and the practice and it just might happen. Practice is key. And don't forget to have fun cause that's what'll make learning easier in my opinion.
I used to watch videos like this and leave them feeling discouraged. Now I look at them with a new mindset that inspires me to just keep at it with guitar. It has helped bringing up my motivation to learn the instrument.
Sorry if some parts were hard to read, english isn't my native language.
Edit: I don't mean that everyone will be able to achieve guitar mastery, but don't let this vid discourage you, let it be the reason you practice more.
This man is a living legend
Being able to play a guitar and tune it at the same time is in itself quite impressive. Tommy is my guitar hero.
and he casually did it without missing a note. Unbelievable.
Bad version😂😂😂...😊
I'm sure Mr. Hendrix Himself would be taken by this
It’s not about comparing Tommy with Jimi. Jimi was brilliant on the electric guitar and played PH with a full band. Tommy put together a solo arrangement as a request - and does a brilliant job capturing the main riffs and themes of the song. It’s really a shame Jimi’s life was cut short. You have to wonder where he would be musically now in his twilight years. I would like to think he and Tommy might have hooked up along the way as geniuses often do.
There's a quality to Tommy that reminds me of Stevie Ray Vaughan. These guys don't just play music, they channel it. That's why they make the nearly impossible appear easy. I was befuddled when I once heard him say he doesn't know how to read or write music. This guy's amazing!
Castile Castile don’t read the music, be the music
Tommy, I'm from Herriman Tennessee. One day when I was a kid my folks and I were down town at the local hardware store. Out front there stood a man who I recond was the greatest guitar player I'd ever heard, I also recond he ought to be famous.. I didn't know his name i just knew how incredible that guitar was that day when I first heard him play. He was just plain folk, just like us, only "HE ought to be famous!" I told my dad. Who tried to explain, yes son, That's Chet Atkins. I think back... how funny my comment was. "Whatever his name is Dad! He oughta be famous! Did you head that man play? I recon he's about the best guitar player I'll ever
hear!" I was just a kid but I knew what I heard....
I still do. Tommy, Chet would be so pleased to see how far you've taken his finger style. You're really amazing and so is the inspiration you and Chet and many others have spread around the world now. ...and Tommy, have no doubt, you still amaze me as much Chet did that day when Ifirst heard him play .
I recon you oughta be famous too! God bless
My gramma could read or write anything but she sure could make an awesome cheese and mayonnaise sandwich on white bread and laundry.
That's couldn't not could.
SRV has nothing on this, this is on another level with all the texture and rhythm. Fingerstyle in general is a different beast compared to singlenote shredding up and down on a strat.
When i lived in Nashville, I was a pretty big metal head. never really had an acoustic guitar. The man I lived with/worked with had an acoustic signed by Tommy. He's a good ole' bub, likes having his drink after a week of hard work and just enjoying the nice things in life, plays himself a little guitar from time to time when he gets the chance. I asked him who Tommy Emmanuel was, and his response was, "Ah, hell. You ain't never heard of ole' Tommy?"
He showed me a video of this man playing guitar, and I literally changed genres and everything. Now, I just own a Taylor, and anytime I listen to metal music, it's nostalgic and comical. Mr. Emmanuel, you're a one-of-a-kind legend. Your music has inspired my way of looking at a guitar more so than almost any other musician.
He probably wouldn't want you to abandon a genre you loved, though. Hell, I love a metal jam as well as recording some folk instruments, blues, or wine glasses.

You know why guys like Tommy are at the top of any player's list? I mean people who play and know what they're doing? He's tops because we know that the best players play naked and can outdo ANY guy with an effects rack and electric ax. If you play without a Marshall and a bunch of effects and can still impress, such as we have here THAT! my friend is the essence of the best of the best. It's easy to sound good by powering up and turning on the distort and sustain, but try to sound and PLAY good on acoustic. THAT'S! where the money is, baby. Tommy, you are the best.

ProjektEDM Here "money" means target hit, of course. Agree with ya on the other def. on money.
Well, as much as I agree with you, I have to say, some guitarists can use effects, but still retain their amazing playing abilities. People such as David Gilmour use effects like delay and distortion to just flavor their sound. But again, I agree, other guitarists (I'm not gonna point any fingers to any body in particular, but I'm talking about the Edge) use effects way too damn much and ruin the idea of the guitar as a whole. I don't wanna start an argument, but just sharing my opinion. Cheers!
Got that right.

I'm not one of the 303 dislikes, but I get that there are some who prefer Jimi's version (I'm one of em).
