I’m sorry, but no. Hockey is one of those games that isn’t just fun. From an early age there are high tiers of hockey, and even low tiers of non-travel hockey cost thousands of dollars per year. This kid more than likely plays on a travel team, I guarantee his parents pay thousands of dollars per year for travel and ice time, not just his equipment. No one was giggling this off in the moment except the parents that have too money to spend and his kid made it due to pumping a few extra bucks into the coaches pocket.

Lastly, no, not regardless of the level. If a parent wanted to just have fun, they’d put their kid in a non travel league. AAA clubs from a very young age are literal pedigree builders. The average AAA club runs a family about 8 grand in travel and ice time alone. There’s a statistic, ≈70% of North American professional hockey players played a form of high level travel hockey, such as AAA and or Varsity high school for at least a three year stretch. ≈85% of division 1 college hockey players from ACHA, NAIA, and NCAA played at the AAA level and or high school varsity.
Parents don’t fly their kid from Detroit to Nashville on school weeks every other week for Johnny to get a participation trophy and 2 minutes of ice time, they put them into these programs to get them a chance to play at a higher level in the future. It is quite literally an investment.

That goalie is from Alaska. I just came back from a tourney there and got 1st place. My 14uAA team beat their 19uAAA girls team 6-0! We went undefeated. It was a great season
