  • As I was wandering along the foreshore, a glint of gold caught my eye and I realised there was a strap protruding from the mud. I pulled it and guess what was on the end!
When I wound it up it started to work..... for a while! In today's video I find some of the my favourite kinds of objects - those relating to maritime history. Also, I meet a mudlarking friend Kathy who has made a superb discovery with a great story behind it!
I hope you enjoy this foray along the Thames foreshore. Dont forget that if you want to try mudlarking you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find the details on their website:-

Oh dear, Nicola you have gone and made me cry with the beautiful tribute to Her Majesty The Queen. I simply adored her and am mourning her passing along with Great Britain, the Common Wealth and the rest of the world. However, I feel that we are blessed beyond measure to have had her for so long and all that we benefited from her wisdom, grace, and determination to make this world a better place. By the way, it is nice to see your Mom and Dad looking so well. Thank you for sharing your mud larking adventures with us. Sending you big hugs and much love from Tennessee in the USA.

She has been the only Queen I've ever known because she ruled for my entire lifetime. She will be dearly missed and her devotion and dedication to the throne is like no other. Won't it be odd having a king. Here in NZ many of us are still monarchists. The funeral will be on TV here from 730 tonight, right through the night. I'll be up watching as long as I can stay awake. The pottery is Wedgewood Blue Jasperware. It always has Greco-Roman scenes. It is highly collectable. A friend's mother died and he took her collection to a flea market to sale. A few women went nuts over that Wedgewood stuff, and bought it all! It is 1940s-1970s.

Hi, Nicola - Susan here. First, thank you for the tribute to the Queen. I got quite teary again, seeing the letters from the children. Most of us know her as "our Queen", as there aren't that many left who remember singing God Save the King.
I had some fun with the James Barrow Palmer name - he was an interesting fellow. Born in 1798, he gained the Freedom of the City in 1837 (through the Spectacle Maker's guild, but switched to Fish salesman within 3 months). He had two separate businesses in Lower Thames Road - he was a fish factor as well as a salt merchant. He was probably best known for selling Palmer's Sea Salts (so you could take the medicinal qualities of a sea bath without travelling to the coast). His fish business, however, was a bit more contentious. In fact, he was brought up before the Lord Mayor of London for selling bad fish wholesale (a case of bad fish, already rejected by the inspector, covered with a layer of good mackerel). His arrogance in front of the Lord Mayor almost switched it from a warning to a full prosecution, and he threw the fees and fine on the table, stating that 14 shillings meant nothing to him. He was married twice, was the special agent for a fine whiskey (in the '50s), and
once saved the life of a drowning man in Norfolk. My favourite endorsement that he used was for his Sea Salts - "Sold by all Italian Warehousemen"!

Wow thanks Susan. Brilliant info. Funnily enough I saw the info about the fish and the Lord Mayor online, but I had assumed it couldn't be him! That's just great that it actually is him. I remember as a child seeing films on our tiny black-and-white TV...watching her coronation, and then visiting London one month later...the statue in Picadilly still was caged so that people could not climb it... standing in awe at the crown jewels at the Tower...walking through Westminster Abbey...as a student of history, I have ever since followed her life and have admired Elizabeth II. So the last 10 days have been my own period of mourning a remarkable woman...and I have been struck on a deeper level with the spiritual commitment she made to God and to you, her people...Through all the retrospectives and commentaries, and then the funeral services, I have come to understand what she committed to in that coronation ceremony, and the extent to which she honored that commitment for her entire life...We in the world have been blessed by her...Well done,, Your Majesty...Je suis si désolée, Nicola...😢💔

The "Grecian blue" and white vase or ornament appears to be a Wedgewood jasperware with mythological designs - appears in dark blue and light blue productions. A Wedgewood catalog should find its exact number. Some tea cups have 1 man - and 1 man feeding a pegasus. Yours is definitely feeding an eagle or a griffin. This is bigger than such cup, and could be a small bowl, vase, low planter bowl or planter vase. This might be a clone (knock off) by another pottery company with its appearance of low qualilty (spode?).

    • @johnvonundzu2170

A great lark, once again, Nicola! The Wedgewood shard looks like the seated person is feeding a mythical hippogriff. A magical beast like Buckbeak in the Harry Potter series.

I share your intrigue surrounding old wooden ship components. Such beautiful objects in their weathered and aged state. Also to imagine those ships sailing centuries ago. More amazing pipes too!

RIP QE-2, I watched this whole week long event from the other side of the planet on my Tele.QE2 Becoming Queen the year i was born. The amount of history she was personally witnessed & was involved in & with during her long reign is mind boggling to say the least. The logistics alone along with the all encompassing choreography in staging this 1000 year long tradition speaks volumes about British staying power. From once being an Empire, then a Commonwealth and now a Island Country & still relevent surely has had its pros and cons in the world opinion & view. What i find re-assuring is the ability for this family to have a public presence, a closeness like Charles walking along & shaking hands with long line of commoners while waiting for hours. In the US that personal contact with common people would never happen on such a scale for a whole week, too many crazies with bad attitudes, deep hatreds & biases along with their beloved guns, to even think of being exposed & rubbing elbows with the people would be the unthinkable. I do wish our country could have a gun and paranoia free consciousness like Britain and other civilized countries. Many people here think of social medicine and keeping your people healthy without putting them in lifelong debt to a corporation as communism. Of coarse the same idiots elected Trump as their dearest of leaders. God Bless the Queen & thank you for all the interesting history of your foreshore.

Totally interesting, Nicola. That knife was in very good condition for its age, but what a pit about that watch, which at first sight, looked as if it could've been a Rolex. Like you say, Kathy had a great discovery with finding that pot with the inscription on it. Many thanks, and also for showing the variety of lovely birds on the shoreline.

Loved the video…the knife, the salt pot and the sweet little orange bird.
Was a year ago tomorrow that I left on my London and Southern England adventure all inspired by your videos!
It’s strange to see all of those places I stopped around the city memorialized for the Queen. Places where I stood that her procession passed over.
I’m a bit blue actually maybe it’s my missing London maybe it’s having such a permanent figurehead gone who seemed to bring so much regularity and stability and reassurance to England. I’ve been re-watching The Crown series and she just went through so much history and drama in both her personal and public life. Love and cheers to her and to you Nicola!
    😊Michelle

After spending all day watching the Queen's Funeral proceedings, I wasn't going to look at RUclips. But I did and saw you had posted and, of course, there was only one video I could watch. Thank you for this video, it struck just the right chord and the end tribute was wonderful. The choice of Pachelbel canon was perfect.... RIP Your Majesty...
