- You see that object I'm pulling out of the mud! I really was not expecting that! There are so many exciting finds in this video and it was wonderful reliving the excitement of finding them when I edited this video. And Wow, there is a fantastic coin find too. When I initially found it I thought it was an old penny but it turned out to be something far rarer. As always, one of the best things about these finds, is exploring the story behind them. I always learn so much miscellaneous information from these muddy treasures.
Thank you for watching. If you are inspired to try mudlarking then you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority. Details to be found here:-

See you soon.

Well done to the three people who won The Searcher Magazine! I still need the address of Lark Davis. If you have sent it to me then I cannot find it anywhere!! Get in touch Lark! Nicola
Forked stick - to be used for a single at the rear of a river boat
I believe that large wooden oval shaped piece is from a WWII aircraft. The electrical fittings are for bulkhead cannon plugs. Not all aircraft parts are aluminum. Note all the screw holes around the edges.
Take photos with a ruler for scale and send them to Duxford, the Imperial Air War Museum.
You may have a piece from the Battle of Britain!
Thank you. Will do
Very interesting program. Something different and exciting.
It very much seems as if the amount of interesting things stuck in the mud is limitless and I find that fascinating.
Maybe that's why as kids, mud was more enticing than plain ole dirt. 😁
Another absolutely brilliant film, Nicola. I was born 70 years ago on the banks of that river - in the York Road General Laying-In Hospital, but I've learned so much more about the history of that amazing river from your films than I ever have from any other source. You're addictive to watch and your enthusiasm is contagious - in a very wonderful way. Thanks so much.
Thank you Rob
Rob, I love that building! I live in the area now and like you, I just love all the nuggets of quirky local information that Nicola unveils. it's the gift that never stops giving.
@@Gazellekaz The last time I saw the building It had been turned into a hotel - a Premier Inn I think!
Believe me I was as excited as you were yelling at the TV saying Oh my gosh that's so cool, that's so pretty. I loved the metal sign and especially the sunflower in the middle. I love sunflowers. And that would make such a cool piece of art. I hope you show it to us when you're done
Wow NICOLA!! One of the best thames mudlark outings i have seen. Love the plaque
Thanks Adam! ❤️
Please don't be self-conscious about your excitement over the glorious and mysterious treasures you find along the Thames. You make us feel as though we're there, getting our hands muddy, eager to rinse something off for a better look. The Imperial Light piece is beautiful, and I love your idea of mounting it off-center on the oval wooden thingamabob. Thanks for the information on Margaret Mellis, I can see why she inspires you. All the best to you, Nicola.
I MAY be mistaken, but I think the object identified as a barge pole 'punt pole' or 'setting pole', is actually a 'Pike Fork' used to help erect pre-framed walls and scaffolding. It also looks like a defensive pike fork used to push away siege ladders from a wall. It may also be a 'Spar Pike' used aboard ship to help raise and position spars, but this is only a guess. All the 'Barge Poles' I can find have a much blunter end to them. At any rate, just keep Mud Larking and showing us what you and your fellow larkers find. Thank you.
Take it to the museum for confirmation!
Isn’t there a saying
“I wouldn’t touch that with a barge pole”?😂
Thank you! You could be absolutely right. I'll delve deeper into it
In America the phrase goes...I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole! 😁
Clothesprop? I'll get my coat.
The imperial Light plaque has 2.0 CP on it indicating 2 candlepower. This could have been off an electric lamp or possibly Acetylene powered lamp. I imagine the latter, as it is big eoough to come off of a larger tank. (Here in the U.S. some houses had a buried underground tank that they dumped Carbide and water into to generate gas to light up a home. Same principle as a miners lamp but on a much larger scale). On the wood plaque, the top connector with the pins is a commonly used electrical connector. If you really clean the base flange of it, I suspect you will see the words "Cannon" on it and a part number. I am unable to ID the lower item, as you don't have a good close up of it. Here in the U.S. one can still buy imported soft drinks from Japan in Codd bottles. I bought a couple just for the bottles. Great finds. I really like the coin and the plaque the best.
Thank you for this information
We can get Codd bottles in UK from Asian stores. The Japanese brand is called Ramune - my daughter loves drinking them.
Good call on the electrical connector. It appears to be the type that had 16-gauge contacts and was widely used in the WWII era on aircraft, naval, and other military equipment. Can't imagine, though, why it is mounted on wood.
to add a thought, it looks to me like the 'charge 16lbs' on the right may refer to the load of carbide that would have been used in the acetylene gas generator for one of these lights. If correct, that sounds quite large, so either that plaque might have gone with a case of carbide to refill the system several times, or it might have gone to the central canister which would have had gas lines leading off to each fixture in the stately home. THE OLD BYRD FARM VLOG here on youtube has a couple of videos of an in-ground carbide gas generator from an old acetylene lighting system that was installed in a US farm.
@@tuckertomlinson4216 I remember reading where there was a short time that these electrical generators were being installed on boats/ships, usually as a retrofit, as it was all such new technology that would give them lights at night.
We appreciate your channel!
Thank you!
Your excitement and enthusiasm is just so contagious. The day I stumbled across your channel was such a blessing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insights on your finds.
flensing fork?
My thoughts exactly
I am so excited, For you!!! Nice haul!! Thanks for hauling us along!!
Not turning off?! I was so excited with you and I was smiling ear to ear that was great fun Nicola! As always you are a joy. That wooden thing must be some sort of hatch to a boat to reach the inner workings. Love the squirrel bit at the end also. Such a fun video overall.
Love the maritime pole…in America we say “I wouldn’t touch that with a ten foot pole!”
Nicola, Sonia from America. CONGRATS on the new King and Queen. They are so cute together. I loved Diana, but Camilla is the one he should have originally married. Love her now. Anyway this is my favorite of your mudlarking now. I wish there was a place around here I could mudlark, but it would take months of research..
You take care, God Bless!
Your excitement is felt all the way across the pond…❤🇨🇦
Congratulations winners 🥳🥳
I really enjoyed this Lark! Thank you, Nicola❤
When you talked about gloves or not gloves, it reminded me of times I've been hit by a strange feeling of gratitude for just how amazing our hands are: they can manipulate and feel in such incredibly detailed and delicate ways, yet they're also tough, really, and can take more use than some give them credit for. I don't care one bit when mine get dirty if it's for good reason. Digging out a complete stoneware bottle from the Thames mud, using your fingers to both dig and feel the texture of the stoneware: those are definitely a good reasons!
So true!
That's a very pretty brown 🤎 ink bottle !!! I couldn't believe that it said blue 💙 black 🖤 ink on the picture of what the label says on each bottle !!! The pens 🖊️ that I write with has blue/black ink that is mixed together & it's a beautiful color !!! The pipe was cute with the little man sitting on the bowl (?) of the pipe !!! That gold plaque about lighting was very cool 😎 & love the marble !!! Enjoyed your video very much !!! Squirrel was funny on that scaffolding climbing around 😊 !!! ❤️🙂🐿️🥜
Cannot believe how many outstanding finds, lovely ink and the pipe with the person on is exquisite, cannot wait to see the plaque mounted on the wooden object you found, keep up the good hunting
I always enjoy watching your videos and learning about the items you find. I could listen to your accent all day!
I love how you open your excellent ( in every respect)
videos with local wildlife.
I absolutely love when you get excited about a find! If you're excited then I'm excited!! Love the light sign, lovely! My favorite is the pipe with the little man, he's oh so sweet! Sending lots of love and hugs 😘🥰❤
Wow Nicola! What a great haul. Your excitement is so palpable, please don't ever feel you have to tone it down. Your items are always interesting but this lot were especially intriguing, thanks for doing the research for us. And last but not least, I always love your intros and outros - the sights and sounds of nature are so incredibly relaxing. Your videos are a real tonic for the soul. 🙏
Thank you! ❤️
The drake calling to his mate is lovely. Well done, very interesting.
Great, great and super exciting finds!! Wow! 🎉 Love the coin & the pipe!
The plaque, the stonewear, the cod marble and the bit of wood....
The Thames never disappoints!
Congrats to the winners!
hello from Denmark 🌸❄️
I can't wait to see your finished crafting project of the brass lighting plate and wooden board 🙂. Thanks again for sharing another adventure. P.s I think Squirrel might be stealing the limelight 😀❤.
Nicola, no matter how bad my day has been, I can always count on you to lift my spirits. Your shrieks of joy and the sheer thrill you exhibit is contagious. I often find myself making the very same noises though I’m sitting in my living room on my sofa with my dog. He thinks you and I have both gone mad.🤣Love you here in Tennessee!❤
This comment certainly lifted mine. 💜
I am from Tennessee too !
@@rosiamorrison6531 small world! I’m in Chattanooga. You?

@@adamwhitt3600 I’m thinking about moving to Newport, TN to a tiny home. I lived in Knoxville 5 years-hated that city! You live in Gods country! I love to visit NC.

Thank you Chris! Xx
Thanks for sharing
We love when you get excited. It creates more suspense while waiting for the item to be washed off. That coin is amazing considering it was only around for 12 years or so.
Yes! A real surprise coin find
can't wait to see your new wall art. i have an old window frame w/glass still intact i'm turning into art for my living room. cost me nearly nothing yet will be a one-of-kind beauty. thanx for sharing your excitement when treasures turn up in the mud.
Clearly, the word of the day is EXCITEMENT! I think it will be in my mind all day now, thanks to this video, Nicola. What a wonderful series of finds during your excursions. I think any one of them is better than the next. Thanks for conveying that excitement and enthusiasm to us, Nic. Hope you are staying well and wish you the very best of holidays upcoming.
Thx Steve xx
lovely video nicola , as always the best finds ,
Thank you Sarah and Mick 😊 ❤️
I think the pipe was my favorite, although the light manufacturer's plate was a close second.
Congratulations to the winners. I did order a copy of The Searcher with you on the cover directly from their website to add to the one I already have with Si on the cover. Maybe one day I'll get them both signed in person 😉
Looove that shirt/blouse!!
Thank you! A vintage find ✨️ xx
Nicola, how I love your eye for nature, particularly our feathered friends and that naughty but adorable little Sammy Squirrel' and the end of your video. Today, that pipe find was magnificent light manufacturer's plate! And that _glorious_ brown stoneware bottle! WOW! 😊 Naturally I adore sunflowers, so here is my best bunch in thanks for this simply wonderful mudlarking video! Best wishes to you, Wendi 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Thank you! ❤️
Nic well done. The imperial Light Plack is a fantastic find. The sunflower design is splendid
I think this is one of my favourite so far Nicola! Your excitement had me in the edge of my chair for each new find. Thank you so much for sharing these incredible finds with us.
Your excitement is contagious and I am sure that other viewers like me cannot wait to see what Old Father Thames has offered up for you to find.
I thought the marble shone like the moon when you held it up to the sun. It became more than a round ball of glass and became magical and ethereal.
Never apologize for your expressions of excitement, therein lies the thrill, even with the broken off bottle top,we experienced a”Oh MY Goodness” moment.
My favorite find in this one,is the Imperial light plaque.
Why?
It’s beautiful,for one.
Number 2,I know you adore Sunflowers,a find that was made ,destined,to reside in your home!
Thank you Charles xxx
Goodness Nicola you found some truly amazing things in this video!!! It would be hard for me to pick a favorite!! Thank you for always providing such a delightful way to wind down on a Sunday night!! These looks back at history are my favorite bedtime stories!! Much love from DeeAnn 🇺🇸
You and your videos are such a delight.
Congratulations to the winners. Great finds Nicola.
A lucky night! Thanks! Happy holidays! 🌞🎅🏻🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Classic! You, the river, the wildlife, the finds. What your followers have all come to love. Glad you were rewarded with such interesting objects. And thank you.
So many great finds today!!!
That was a wonderful video today !! There can never be to much excitement when mudlarking ! It's amazing how you can find items that are centuries apart in the same place !
Hello 👋 from New York USA Thank you for Bringing me Along with you I can't wait to see What you Find Next 😊
I always love seeing your excitement over your finds Nicola! The finds today were amazing. I love the barge pole, the copper sign, the wooden door and pipe. Ofcourse there is the saying I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole! Lol Happy day from Australia 🇦🇺 😄
Such great finds!! The Imperial Light plaque indicates whatever it was on, took a 16 pound charge and produced 2000 CP (candle power) so a bit more than a reading light. I really liked the stoneware bottle and to think it was still intact after so many years. Your barge pole looks like the world's biggest hot dog fork. LOL All the best to you and love from Canada.
Haha thx Clive xx
I would expect a plaque that size to be mounted on the acetylene tank that feeds the attached lights.
I love the pipe with the little man, so rare ⛏️ and 😍🐿
I love your excitement, it's so contagious. I find myself in full suspence waiting for the tiniest hint of resemblance or a complete item. So awesome. You are a truly wonderful person, Nicola.
Thank you! ❤️
Great at night you get a different light perception. Great finds
Wow fabulous finds! I think that the Imperial Light may have been on a crate since it is marked 16 lbs maybe a crate with a light fixture or a crate of bulbs. Lovely plaque! 👍
That stoneware bottle is breathtaking. Congratulations
Oh, I so enjoyed your excitement, Nicola! I do love the Imperial light plaque, and I totally agree with mounting it on your wooden piece. Love the stoneware master ink bottle!💖
Nicola what a good find great bottle 🍼 xx John
Oh Nicola what a bounty of finds,to watch your excitement is definitely infectious,I wason the edge of my chair till the end. That Stoeware bottle is a real beauty, the glaze makes it look like new .I remember back in my school days using Stephens ink and I also recall that horrible crusty powdered mix that the ink monitor would pour into the individual ink wells. Most desks bore signs of its indelible characteristic.
The lasting impression of this vlog though was your wonderful excitement, it must be wonderful to have a hobby that excites you so muc ,I love it .
Thanks for this Nicola .
Take care happy larking X
Thx Ralph xx
Nice finds! I think the brass plate of imperial lightning was attached to a gas/propane tank that fueled the lights. Since it has 16 LBS on it and a mention of hours, just a thought. Keep the videos going, they are very entertaining! Greetings from a detectorist and occasional mudlarker from Holland
Some very unusual and wonderful finds!!!
Somewhere in that mud is Jack the Ripper's signed confession. You'll find it one day.
Signed in indelible Stephen's ink of course!
Nice to see you again. Have been hospitalized with a injured right leg and Covid 19. In hospital and nursing home for three months. Will resume membership with you again. Merry Christmas and happy new year. Cheers Nicola! ❤️🇬🇧👍🙂🇺🇸
So much excitement! I cannot pick a favorite. They are all fabulous in their own way! It is amazing that squirrels find new ways to the bird feeders. ❤
Excited is awesome!
Absolute corker finds Nicola, plenty to be excited about! A-mazing finds. Oh and I love that Squirrel hired herself some scaffolding to get to the bird feeder 🥜🤣 too cute xx Teresa 🇦🇺❤
Oh Nicola love the faux pas on the clay pipe “it’s a little man with a small tool” made me giggle 🤭
Great finds! The pole was interesting and wonder how long it was exactly. And your little fellow on the pipe has me curious, what is going on with him? Details on his jacket and trousers I think...has anyone else remarked about his questionable activity? Anyways, always learning something new from you, and appreciate all of your efforts!
Haha yes I agree there is something odd I agree. I'm not sure if that's deliberate or the bad moulding..... maybe I need to do a poll later on my community page!
These relic’s are remarkable, I am in awe over them. The foreshore really brings out the best of the best of things. I am happy for you and your excitement. Keep getting excited Nicola it’s really great to see! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💗💗💗💗💗
Amazing finds Nicola! I was just thinking that Imperial Light plack would be perfect for the wooden mount and then you said it out loud. I don't blame you for the excitement. Many thanks as always for sharing your adventures with us all. :-)
The coin was an excellent find, well done. I love watching your channel 👍
What a great episode! I just love seeing everything you find! I’m extra excited this week because I actually got to see The Thames in person! I kept an eye out for you in case you were out filming, but alas, I didn’t see you. We loved London though, so I’m sure we’ll be back!
See you next time!
Yes fingers crossed I am coming from Australia next year. I will have to keep an eye out for @nicolawhite. I can only dream to follow her on a mudlarking excursion
Aloways wonderful and interesting finds :) Happy Christmas!
What awesome pipes! Super cool coin and plaque too. Always enjoy your videos and nature scenes. Hats off to you Nicola! Loved it!!!
What a great video. So many finds and how wonderful to see your excitement at all those things. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us.
That squirrel! 😍 Hope her cunning plan to get to the bird's food was thwarted. And those finds are worth getting excited over. Quite honestly, your videos wouldn't be anywhere as interesting and enjoyable if you clearly didn't love or get excited over finds. Not everything found is going to be that silver and gold some people seem to need to find to be happy. I'm far more interested in the age and attached history to a piece than it's marketable value. You said for us to be ourselves... good advice for you too! Be yourself, allow yourself to get excited over your finds! ❤️
Thank you!
Omg, I get just as excited watching. Cant wait to jump into bed at night and watch you and other muddies. I'm a 60yr old woman living in Australia and LOVE crafting with things I find. Cant waite till yr next adventure 💕😊💕
What amazing finds Nicola. I love the objects you found and your wonderful history lessons. I think the Imperial Light is my favorite but love all of them. I think another saying came from something like your find and it is "I wouldnt touch him with a ten foot pole" just a thought. Until next week! Take care.
LOVE YOUR SITE AND YOUR ENTHUSIASM, THANK YOU SO MUCH, JUNE X
woohoo! I love your enthusiasm...this is my favorite (so far) of your many video adventures!! LOVE the history that follows and gives context. Mostly love the vicarious experience.
Thank you💞🤗💞
Exciting and emotional finds Nicola , I’ve never been so touched by a barge pole in my life 😂🍻
🤣
I do have to agree with you lol
Loved The William Of Orange Coin. Also Stephens Inks Bottle..
What An Expedition !!!!
Well Done Buttercup !!!!
Hyper excitement made me smile the entire time I watched this video! Thank YOU, Nicola! Once again, my Sunday is complete now I’ve seen your finds and your beautiful self!
Love that pipe with the little man on it.😀❤
We have one of these bottles with the label still reasonably intact on display (collecting dust?) in our lounge room. It does not have the “Stephens, London” marking at the base but instead has a Lovatt branding. We were so excited firstly to see your very similar bottle pulled from the Thames mud but then when you provided the picture of the label it took it to the next level. A real link across time and space. Cheers T
Yes I hadn't realised they had labels on originally!
Wow that coin, my mind boggles.
The night of finding larger items! Plus a few small pipes thrown in ! So excited watching you being excited! Congrats on all your treasure finds! I do have one small suggestion; if you do mount the Imperial Light plaque on the board, where one of the pipe holes on the board is, you might put a light bulb in it to honor the purpose of the Imperial Lights. Or not, just throwing that out there! ✌🏼❤️
Such exciting finds 👍🏼
What fantastic finds, Nicola! ❤ Thank you for taking us on all your adventures…I have to know, did your squirrel friend make it down for his 🥜?
Finally!! Haha.
Oh! Nicola, you burst my balloon, I was going to be so clever and suggest the very thing you decided on with the plaque and the board, you beat me to it, This is only a guess, but i think there was a slight possibility that you may have been excited over that find, but i might be exaggerating a bit, Wonderful hunt!.. Cheers!
Nicola, I think your brass plaque may have been on a container of calcium carbide. Calcium carbide is a powder that is mixed with water to create acetylene gas that is flammable, which is burned to create a flame. I t looks like 16 Lbs. is printed on the right side of center.
Thank you! I'm going to look into that now
if i found this things like this id get very emotional!!! i love history !!! and to think them clay pipes have been there 200-300 years !! omg
Love this video so much. Amazing finds, thank you.
Thank you xx
