Nice to hear Joel put an historical perspective on his development. He was correct in his analysis of the times. The powers- that- be had tried to sanitize the music scene and continue their control of the teen market. The Beatles' appearance on Sullivan's show was a revelation to teenagers, not only USA and Canada, but the world. Four young men were pointing the way to a heretofore unimaginable future. The die was cast. The times were changing.
If you listened to this video, you got an instant lesson in the history of early 1960s pop music and American culture. You may not be ready for that lesson or interested in the topic, but there was nothing bullshit about this.
I actually like the pre-Beatles pop music from 1960-63, very nostalgic and innocent, but I get what he was saying, it didn’t aspire future musicians to take it up as a career.
He's such a great story teller!!! 👍💓

He's an American Icon!!!! don't kid yourself!
Billy is awesome.
love him more and more!
This man rocks!!
And Billy is truly one of the greats himself 💖(bet Mr McCartney rates him highly, no doubt)
McCartney probably wonders why he stopped writing music back in 1991... :)
He does. I once read something where Paul said that he wishes he had written “Just The Way You Are.”

Some of his songs sound kind of McCartneyish. When I first heard "Don't Ask Me Why" I thought it was McCartney.

These people applaud anything. 'Dumont', *man starts clapping*'
