Is this a playable mini game anywhere?
Man, without the context of the portion of the original opening where jack gets threatened and finds a wrench to protect himself, your version of him emerging from bathysphere with an automatic weapon kinda makes him out to be the bad guy, lol
Almost like he was a hitman...hmmmmm
i was thinking the same lol the splicers made no aggressive action and he just murks them lol
@@CameronMcKee he came in like a cuban revolutionary -
"die capitalists!"
@@derekofbaltimore I thought Cubans were trying to escape socialism? That that came later in the sequel.? lol
your 2D art is LEGENDARY, love seeing your design process
Wow thank you!!
yo Poly I’ve seen some of your videos before. Nice seeing you here
Polymars: "watch as I port super bioshock to DS and PSP"... here's to hoping.
@@thomasbrush , your art may be good, but if you plan on making it a true 2D 16-bit platform game, then you honestly need to learn from Super Metroid on how to do some good sprite/pixel art, along with a few lessons from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
@@thomasbrush please ...an android version would be soooooo cool
Come on, man... Don't use that SNES bait just like that. You got a pretty awesome 2D Bioshock Flash game, anyway :P Inspiring stuff!
8:50 "All good things of this EARH flow into the city"
Your demo is amazing, and would have been one of those impossible games I would have hated to love. GG, man.
I caught that too.. lol
Good stuff man. Just one other point though: this looks way too good to be a snes game. It looks like a modern platformer. Maybe do a pixel version with a more cartoon-y style? Good job either way.
Same initial reaction.
A cool experiment/demo tho. I'd probably still play it haha
Gotta say, that's a bold move opening your game on a water level. Almost villian-esque.
Looks great, but it doesn't look like a SNES game, but rather something on the 3DO/CD32/early PS1 (like Abe's Adventure).
I agree, but I think this still looks too high def even for those too. I feel that the number of colors and resolution should be more limited for the right aesthetic.
Reminds me of Little Nightmares in many ways, great job!
honored to hear that, ToastedShoes!
Ooooh I can totally see this!
It looks like pinstripe rather than LN
you're incredible, really. Your art is gorgeous and you have good ideias to make your games, totally my inspiration
Umm..... Wasn't Ideias a Egyptian sun god?
@@Deltron37 she means ideas idiot
Awesome proof of concept. I wish you had spoken more about pacing-starting out with an automatic weapon destroys any of the tension and atmosphere. Also the typo "Earh"
Thomas: "I've taken advantage of unity's particle system"
Dani enters the chat.
CX in the chat.
Beautiful, precision work. Wish I had those mad Unity skills.
I just started laughing when Andrew Ryan's monologue starts while you're bobbing up and down looking completely ridiculous, love it.
I LOVE IT.
BioShock has been my favorite game since ever and this 2D version is such an impressive homage. Truly inspiring!!
I dunno if you continue developing it further but I'd like to point a few things that could bring the experience of Rapture another step closer to the original.
1) As you enter the lighthouse, what if you had both the lights off (over Ryan's head) and as Jack gets closer, the lights turn on, making for a little more dramatic reveal.
2) The Bathysphere (sp?) can have a small, door closing animation after you press E and a little depressurization effect in the way of steam coming off the seams to show that this is a submarine.
3) The most important thing in the original was the fact that the word "Rapture" reveals the city. 11 year old me had goosebumps with this reveal. To achieve this, we can have the starting portion of the game be covered with seabed stuff like corals or better yet, be part of a cave-like thing ... and as the word Rapture comes up, the city should come into view!
This was incredible to watch. I'd love to see this become a full game.
Holy crap that looks really good, man I wish I had artistic talent, even 2D art is hard for me I am totally useless when it comes to art.
I’d argue 2d is harder than 3D as you get more help with the fundamentals in 3D software
Cohesion is a difficult thing to maintain with 2D art
your a human you do have "artistic talent" you just need to invest the time remember most artists you see that are good have invested large parts of there life in to gaining this craft they didn't just fall out the womb ready to draw :p
The art was god-like, and the ending was even better
Honestly looks more like a modern 2d game. Too smooth and clean for snes or 90s pc.
according to the gameplay intro, it is completed 101%. congrats. jokes aside, great video!
@6:53 It's kind of the opposite in VR. You're amazed by the most seemingly trivial details. It's great.
I love how accurate the "take the first 5 minutes of shooting splicers. recreate it into unity and hooray, I've impressed the internet" actually is
This is seriously super insane and I'm incredibly impressed at how amazingly cool it looks. You captured Bioshocks atmosphere beautifully with your art. Amazing
Thought we wouldnt notice the "Earh" typo but I did! Amazing work though you've inspired me :)
3:51 omg you had me on this one :DDDD
Good video TB. Would like to see more of these, good to step away from projects to refresh the skills!
The art style is just AMAZING, god you couldn't made it better. Also i find very aburt the jumps in the minigame of the batisphere, would be better if when holding the space bar the batiphere elevates and when releasing it goes down; It would be more consistent with the tone of the intro.
Just a tiny thing, its an amazing 2d version, it is exactly how 2d Rapture will look like lol :D
I applaud your effort. I have zero game making skills. However, the reason Bioshock is immediately gripping is not just the fantastic intro, it's the enchanting yet disturbing environment and more immediate is the tone.
I like the fact that your minimalistic art perfectly matches the art deco style of the game.
This is a masterpiece!!! I'd totally play this. If they ever make a Bioshock set in the 1990s, this needs to be made into a playable mini game within it..
You nailed the atmosphere, particularly with the interior at the end. Great work! 😁
This remake is insane, so beautiful and smooth, good job
I wish I was as skilled with backgrounds as Thomas.
Not necessarily characters, but for me it would be a progress ;-)
I'm simply addicted to Bioshock and I loved your video. Hard work pays off!
How has this video only gotten 4000 views? It deserves MOREEE
Looks cool love bioshock. I can see a full fledged super bioshock turning it into a metroidvania type game. As you progress you get upgrades and can revisit areas to find secrets etc.
Should have started out with the wrench but it was cool would love to see a full game
@Thomas Brush @8:51 typo on sign; ought to read "all good things of this Earth flow into this city." Earth is misspelled as earh.
Recently played through all the bioshock games. Still holds up pretty good. Story is of course one of the best ever!
There is a Bioshock 2D game by indiagames. It was for Java. Instead of cutscenes it has comics like style for storytelling. I started playing bioshock because of that game.
You did good with the art deco design. Very nice.
haha omg.. I was literally just looking at your channel wondering if this was uploaded. I watched a few older videos, and went to the homescreen.. Only to see this :D
Dude, THIS IS SO FRICKING COOL, i love bioshock im testing this game
I would gladly play a full version of this
I dont think that the SNES would have been ever ever be capable to run a game that looks like this..... But nevertheless it looks amazing xD, great job!
I was not expecting the final result to be so polish god damn
All good things of this EARH flow into this city.
That's great, now do it with sprites and a limited color palette to make it a SNES game. =]
I'm happy to see these comments from the purists (like me) lol
Hey Thomas, you should recreate Skyrim in 2D to celebrate the next re-release of TES V
This would be an amazing mobile game, 2K should hire him.
You nailed the parallax. Other thought... AI is going to be able to make all those art assets for you so you can focus on fun game design.
I'd play the shit outta that shit. Especially if you added the wrench and some basic plasmids. Stellar work dude.
This is amazing, I love these kinda videos please do more 3d games into 2d! Your very good! I like how the killing sound is the same as father, which I'm excited about too!
I was kind of expecting a Doom 64 kind of deal but this is good as well. Kudos on the destructo physics. The guns have a satisfying punch 🥊 to them.
Thomas you are a blessing, keep up the good work man👌
You are an amazing 2d artist and If I ever want to learn 2d I will get your tutorial for sure; but, I am currently interested in 3d.
Bro
That's awesome
Bioshock is my favorite game ever and your version was amazing
Im planning to remake or make a game that is fairly Bloodborne in 2d. The areas and stuff like that are going to have Hollow Knight like style but the characters, enemies and weapons wont. I will keep the movement and fight the animations as close to Bloodborne as I can. Im not sure tho if Im going to make this game and I'll, I dont wanna make anyone hyped. Its just a little idea of mine. It will take a lot of time if I want it to be good.
The game looks incredible, but of you had somehow run a filter to make it look 16-bit like Super Nintendo, it would have really sold the look. Bioshock is a game I always wanted to play but never took the time to play. Also, there's a typo at the end of the underwater section.
"Earh"
what you said about how we don't recognize the amount of effort put into the backgrounds is what I felt while playing ghost of tsushima. I got into a rush to beat the game as quickly as possible that I forgot to appreciate how gorgeous that game is
Crash scene looks great. What you've made could have been a mobile port before phones could do 3d aswell as they can today.
The submarine part of the game reminded me of flying with Mario in super Mario world with the cape
Men, i didnt know how much i needed a bioshock 2D version until now... this was awesome, thanks 🥺❤️
Thats pretty cool man. Bioshock is certainly one of the best games i've ever played. Would you kindly make more:)
I wish this was the full game! I'd buy it in a heart beat!
Looks amazing! Flappy bird bathysphere is a stroke of genius, and the lighting looks so beautiful.
I love the idea of recreating Bioshock for a 2D-platform, and truly believe this could result in a experience as compelling as Alien 3 or Abuse. What I see in the video does not remind me of Super Nintendo visuals though - too sharp, clean, colorful. Even if the visuals would work, the gunplay seems to be based on mouse controls. I never played with mouse on SNES. Therefore I find the description highly misleading, so sorry.
Ah man wifes will never be satisfied with whatever hard work we do.. :(
I know :(
If alien: infestion did work so well (with one caveat being the aim), I can imagine this being a very fun game, though I prefer 16-bit sprites myself.
One cool 2d game would be dead space, limited ammo to build tension, variety of firing patterns provided by different weapons, A LOT of potential for puzzles (specially when you find a new tool/weapon), I would just switch ammo for energy and tweak the weapon selection a bit.
Men this is the first time seeing any of your videos. This was amazing! You just won another subscriber. Keep up the good work!
There was actually a official bioshock 2d mobile game that came out in 2010 look it up if u want it's pretty cool
Also it was made before the ios version
So glad I decided to check up on my favorite indie developer :D
Epic. I have many ideas for the games, but i can't draw or programm it. But you inspire me to try anyway! Hello from Russia.
There were a lot of 2.5d Bioshock levels in Little Big Planet back in the day :)
I think Bioshock can fit perfectly as a Castlevania Symphony of the Night style Metroidvania
That bathysphere sequence is giving me nightmare flashbacks to Earthworm Jim on the GameBoy.
On the SNES it was a challenge, on the GB it was actually impossible.
Amazing job!! However, this is going to sound kinda petty and stupid but you shouldn't have given Jack a gun until a little later on. Even if it's just after the first enemy because part of what makes the opening of Bioshock work so well is that feeling of vulnerability while diving into a twisted world you don't yet understand. A very small nitpick but I figured I should bring it up anyways. Other than that, it's great!! Can't wait to see more from you
This needs to be a full game
For the ones curious about the courses:
2d art costs $350 and game dev costs $730.
(you can still get the 35 and 25% discounts)
This turned out great Thomas. This video was definitely worth the wait. You did an amazing job on it. :)
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! I love the 2d feeling, I can feel the smell of saltiness!
Looking at that nice work on Bioshock,
my mind wanders and I ask myself why
no splicers ended up growing a horse head...
wow, this is a gorgeous remake
So...when is that kickstarter being created to get you working on a full game?
Man good job. Your hard work on every aspect of this video shows, from the actual game development itself to the professional structuring of the video. It is appreciated. This is the kind of content that should go viral and boost the creator, you. From a junior game developer to a professional one, cheers Thomas!
You turned the bathysphere into a bathycircle!
This would be so good as a Metroid-like
Bioshock is one of my all-time favorite games and I can honestly say you did it justice :)
Reminds me of an early 00's flash game but not SNES at all.
YOU NAILED IT THOMAS OMG
Wow looks awesome, happy to see you keeping the 2D games alive 😎
I don't know why but this really made me want to see 2D Dead Space
Great job, Thomas! It’s amazing that you put this together in a short time. I recently picked up the physical double pack of Pinstripe & Neversong and I look forward to playing them both. Keep up the good work!
I've played 2D BioShock for Java phones back in early 2000s.
I know it’s not completed but are we able to download this and try it out? This is AMAZING, I wish this was a full game I need more bioshock things like thisss
Saw this and subbed to this channel immediately. For once the RUclips algo found me a gem!
Super dope! Can we try it? Also, can't unsee EARH on the flappy shock section, but still awesome
Honestly looks far more fun than the original. You've kept the gorgeous aesthetic & sound and lost the dark, clunky, dullard, snail paced bore fest peppers with cheap jumpscares that made me want to throw my TV off a balcony. Please finish & release.
Absolutely amazing!!! I love the character shooting and how smooth it looks! Been trying to figure it out.
I'm glad to see that people are still passionate about this masterpiece of a franchise, and you really portrayed that passion into this game 100/10
-Will we next see a 2D Dead Space game... Who knows
WTF NOW IM FINDING OUT THERES A 2D BIOSHOCK
YOU'RE A MADMAN! KEEP DOING AWESOME THINGS!
