Thought I’d drive a tesla just for the heck of it to see what I was missing. My idea of a car is now ruined and I must have one. The experience is sooooo different and quite enjoyable.
If you are used to driving ordinary boring modern cars, then an ordinary boring modern EV is going to seem like an improvement in some ways. But for those of us who still drive interesting cars, a Tesla is about as boring as you can get.
Hey Jay, one note about the not advertising. Tesla currently has a HUGE backlog of orders. They cannot ship any more because they are running at full capacity. I did enjoy hearing your thoughts, cheers.
Kinda lost credibility when he mentioned advertising would sell more cars..Tesla is trying their best to keep up with demand. Currently Can’t build it fast enough. My friend in the US here were told me he had to wait long for his Tesla cuz they are focused in shipping Tesla to Europe.
@@JayEmmOnCars but you would only advertise if supply capacity is greater than demand... right? I'm sure it will be in the future which is why they are planning more and more gigafactories... but it's not there yet so why advertise?
I really didn't want to like the M3P, but after test driving I loved it! The one pedal driving is a revelation and instant performance addictive. Order placed, delivery 'hopefully' next month.....
Hahaha, me too! Went on a test drive last Sat and bought two! 🤦🏽♂️ haha, my wife and I were like, this is a no brainer, let's get rid of the benz and volvo!
Happy for you. I've been a petrol head all my life but was getting a little jaded by ice cars. M3P just breathes new life into motoring again for me. It's not about the performance just the whole package.
Richard Corns Same for me. I’m 62 at the end of this year (unfortunately) and Tesla is really the new exciting thing that arrives in the automotive area since a long time. 👍
@Sunamer Z the car always tells u to stay on and put pressure on the steering wheel to confirm that u're paying attention. And as enjoyable as driving is for me too, tbh in busy roads autopilot is really a great option, i don't think as much as u love driving u actually love the stop and go traffic segments, do you ?
@Sunamer Z its just to know that the driver is still paying attention to the road, the car received 5 star rating on safety for a reason (not only in crashes), it won't drive over kids lol. Besides of course the driver is responsible and in fact the car always puts the disclaimer every time you want to engage autopilot it always tells u to stay up and pay attention to the road and take over if needed, tesla never kept that a secret.
I sat in a model 3 and didn’t think the interior was rubbish . Okay it’s not an Audi interior but the model 3 is designed to get the price down when providing a large, expensive battery pack . Better to keep the price at its current level than splurge on a super premium interior which is less important to the average customer .
Great review! Really appreciate the perspective of a petrolhead and not an electric evangelist. Also pleased to see you're open minded and willing to give credit where its due whilst criticising the notable weak points. An honest approach like this is refreshing and builds credibility!
Why do you think this is honest? A honest review would put a BMW M3 against this model 3 on track and do a 15 round track battle, before calling this model 3 better than a M3.
You seem to be under the impression that would be somehow relevant to the driving that these cars do 99.99% of the time. On track an M3 out of the box is an awful car if track driving is what you really care about
I think we all have pre-existing biases. I respect someone who freely admits and recognise that about themselves, and the mindset they’re bringing to a review (in this case a healthy skepticism of electric cars as machines that can provide driving pleasure) whilst remaining open minded. I’m sick of people that simply seek to confirm what they already believe, and I think people do that because it easy and it comfortable. This happens on both sides. I like reviewers that seem to not be swayed by the fear of pissing off a company that lends out their press cars or hurting the feelings of a friend who’s kindly lent them their car to review, and instead just seems to want to give their honest appraisal. Yeah theres no metrics here, no track battle, Vbox etc but theres other channels for that and honestly, all that tells you is how good a car might be a tiny proportion of the time. I mostly want to know about how a car perform in two places - the ballache commute (90% of my time behind the wheel) and the British B road (the other 10% if I’m lucky!)
@@JayEmmOnCars You are comparing the model 3 to a M3, and declares the model 3 as the better car. If you want to compare apples to apples, you should at least perform a true race on the track (not a simple drag race, but a race consisting out of at least 10 laps). After all, the M3 is designed to be a track focused car, not as a comfortable daily driver.
That was one reason he did it.... he will struggle to beat Mclaren though I suspect, should have called the video "Mclaren please take Note" that would have been nice and light and humorous.... not to mention the views... :-)
That stuff is subjective, but not having a speedo in front of you is a problem- one that it's strange Tesla haven't resolved. I'm surprised to find out they don't have HUDs to be honest, seems an obvious thing in a car like that.
As A current Model 3 Performance owner I can only agree with your conclusion on the interior, it is truly subpar. But they also have some software issues and other annoyances. I often have an error that tells me that the eCall emergency system is faulty, but rebooting the car solves it (that shouldn't be necessary) and from time to time the cruise control just refuses to turn on. The auto wiper function is in some scenarios useless, as it does not use a rain sensor looking for rain on the windscreen, instead it uses the cameras to look out of the windows to try to determine whether the wipers needs to be on. So to get the rain of the windscreen you have two options, either do a single wipe with the button on the indicator stalk, or turn on the wiper manually, which is done using the screen. And a lot of the things are controlled by the screen, taking focus from the road. Overall the Tesla Model 3 does all of the EV related stuff really well, but it misses the target on some of the general car related stuff. As for the performance, it has plenty of it, but after a couple of months the joy of the acceleration has vanished, and I am just longing to get to drive my Porsche which is currently in hibernation for the winter.
You can activate the wiper with voice control. _"And a lot of the things are controlled by the screen, taking focus from the road."'_ And a lot of the things are controlled by the Voice Control.
@@Wirmish Ahh, yes the voice control... Works wonders in Danish... and also in English with a Danish accent... So I have given up on that a long time ago...
Drove a Model 3 Standard recently and was really taken with the massive instant torque available from low or zero rpms. The car was a base model with no options, purchase price just over $41K here in the US. For that money, similar to a base BMW 330 here, I think it's an interesting option. Agree the interior and finish overall seems cheap, but the seats seemed comfortable, and there are some luxury features hidden in those menus. I've never been a Tesla fan, and really wanted to dislike the car, but just was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the massive rpm-free torque can be. No shifting, turbo lag or launch-mode theatrics required, just press down on the volume control and go.
I traded my BMW M3 for the Model 3. I don't regret it at all. I have 41,000 miles on it already and it's been perfect. It's faster than the BMW, handles similar due to low center of gravity, the Brembo brakes do still fade after a few laps of late braking from speed. I think this could be solved with a pad swap. The best part is no maintenance! In the BMW I was always doing those expensive proactive fluid flushes trying to keep stuff from premature failure. In the BM I was always looking for smoke after a cold start, listening for that timing chain guide rattle, crossing fingers connecting rods could handle repeated redline runs, etc. The Tesla is just a more fun/less worry "appliance". Thats not a bad thing.
@@aussie2uGA I'm scared reading this comment. I'm thinking of swapping my N55 M2 for one of these (space, practicality, no fuel) and the M2 is the first car I've owned that I love so much that I even love its problems.
Gone Racing I wouldn't do that, they are fun at first imo but then the screen starts to get super annoying and then the instant torque acceleration kinda gets old because it's the same thing every time. I guess the best way to describe it is that you don't feel so connected, as compared to something like an m2 which feels raw and can go sideways and make noises.
They would sell more with advertising? Well they sell EVERY car they make instantly at the moment (you wait like 10weeks for your car atm) so advertising would be plain dumb... Btw. I think the interior is amazing.
@@JayEmmOnCars I think he was trying to imply, that they probably couldn't shift much more of them even if they were advertising, because their battery manufacturing is at capacity.
Yep, that's one thing most people don't understand. They don't spend a penny on advertising because it's an expense they don't need to. Literally word of mouth are making more sales than they can currently handle, even with their massive expansions planned for the next few years it looks as though it'll be a long time before they actually do catch up with demand. And by that time I highly suspect their technology will have advanced far more and they'll become even more desirable. In the words of Elon Musk - plaid drive train is like alien technology... As if the current tech is mild lol...
On this premium interior thing I am definitely a Tesla fan I think they’re the greatest thing but the interiors suck as far as the materials. I love the minimalism in the model three though.I would love it if my model three had some Audi style seats
Bob Dobalina i’m pretty sure you’re just trolling but I find it hilarious you think that Americans put plastic on their furniture. Ha ha some people in the 80s with Gerry curl do it to keep their hair grease off the couch but funny stuff dude thank you
Great review, James. Having just made the same change as the owner in the video (M135i / F10 M5) to Model 3 Performance, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. I used to be spending about £400 a month on petrol. In my first 5 months of Tesla ownership, it's cost me £355.32 in electricity (between AC home charging and supercharging). The difference in fuel alone almost pays for the car. Once I factor in my business mileage, then I'm actually making money. Don't get me wrong, the Model 3 isn't the perfect performance car. The M5 would eat it alive over a certain speed, but for entertaining driving on Cornish back roads, it's hard to beat. I agree that it still isn't an electric car for the masses, but it's beginning to get there. The E-Niro, Kona and new Renault Zoe are fabulous EVs. As demand increases, the cost will go down (until the government realise how much tax revenue they're losing, but that's another story).
As a BMW M owner with a friend who has a model 3 the assumption that an M5 would be better over certain speeds needs one caveat. The BMW driver would need to be very talented and those speeds would be a jail sentance on British roads.
I appreciate your fair and honest review. The interior is really subjective and some people love it and some hate it. I agree the materials could be nicer, but I really appreciate the simplicity of the interior and love how it’s like nothing else on the road.
The thing is that when it comes to every day performance, technology, and economy. Its really hard to beat this car when compared against other cars in its price range. Thats why people say its the answer.
I have one and totally agree with it and i have put a lot more mileage in this car within 8 months of ownership than than any other ICE car i owned mainly because my work place offers free charging and it costs peanuts to charge at home as well which makes to want to travel everywhere around the country to explore more. Also, precondition feature, and dog mode and sentry mode are just great. Never need to scrape ice off the windows or windscreens in the winter.
Sounds like good garage. I’ve got a comfy/rowdy combo myself. B5/S4 and 370Z. I like to stir my own gears, so the S4 is a manual and would miss that in a model three
Getting some serious Jeremy Clarkson vibes at 16:40 😂 Meant in a good way, of course. Nice review, made me want to chop my very nice but pedestrian V60 in for one!
We went for a test drive out of interest. Ours arrives in November! Absolutely incredible machine that is faster than the vast majority of cars on the road.

I’m a petrol head - love racing, cars, riding motorcycles - but honestly I’m one of those who sees every new expensive combustion car and think, why did you buy that? We’re in a climate emergency , the owner had the money to buy a Tesla or other premium electric and yet you didn’t . I immediately see the owner as uncaring about saving our species (the planet will be fine ) and dislike them . That’s just the way I see it .

Nick Clark biggest 15-20 oil ships pollute more than every car. If you leave just true petrol heads we probably wouldn’t make a dent, comparatively to people not recycling. Not eating meat does the same to the environment to switching to electric. I will recycle, but take it to the centre in my old school JDM sh!tbox, which would be better at saving the planet than people jumping from electric car to electric car every 5 years. No point of electric cars if people keep switching every 5 years, if people keep cars going for 15-20 years petrol or electric rather than going to the new tech car every 3 years we would drop the carbon footprint massively. Industry still has to industry though
@@slideways8022 Tesla's Model 3 drivetrain has been tested to 1 million miles with almost no wear. Model S battery packs have already lasted more than 300,000 miles of real world use in customer cars on real roads. Almost nothing of EV battery packs is wasted or not reused or recycled. Don't believe the anti-EV lies constantly being put out by oil companies. Do the math for yourself. P.S. Took my Lexus for service and decided to pop by the local Tesla service center for a test drive. 3 months later, I'm the proud owner of a Model 3 Performance! Love the car, just wish it was build like a Lexus. Oh well, everything else makes me smile!
As a Lexus driver this is one of my big concerns. That, plus the fact Lexus do some wizardry with sound (in their V6/V8 cars anyway, the 4 pots sound awful), I'm going to miss that when I eventually go electric- hopefully hydrogen not battery though. My other concern which has nothing to do with EVs- how are you finding Tesla customer service? I've genuinely found Lexus so good that I'm worried about going back to anyone else now!
@@ApothecaryTerry Sorry for the late reply. I never got a notification. So far, Tesla service has been fine. Nothing special like Lexus. But, my Tesla needs far less service than my Tesla. I get my tires rotated at Discount Tire and I'm good for another 5k miles. Do I miss the sound of an engine...sure! But, the instant torque and lack of engine/exhaust drone is relaxing, though I still find my RX450h is a little quieter in wind noise and tire noise.
@@Curryolla Good to hear, while I'm making the most of petrol for now, I reckon in maybe 5 years I'll be able to get a charging point installed at my flat or hydrogen might be viable. I'm going to miss a nice engine sound and I'd rather skip batteries for hydrogen but it seems Tesla are setting the bar reasonably high so other manufacturers will have to release good products to keep up. Currently in a GS450h, which weirdly is not the same drivetrain as the RX450h (it's basically the same as the LC500h, minus a launch gear)- one difference is the 200bhp electric motor so I've got used to the instant kick from that which I do like a lot. I think this video makes EVs seem boring due to lack of sound, but of course switching James's voice for a Mark Levinson stereo will help! No offence to JayEmm of course...his voice just can't quite match a nice engine or good music for excitement!
@@ApothecaryTerry Love the GS450h. Personally needed the AWD and got an RX450h and Infiniti Q50 Hybrid AWD as well. I love having Mark Levinson. The Bose in my Infiniti is too "mid-heavy". I find ML is great for classical and Jazz music. But the Tesla's sound system is better for 80s and pop.
@@Curryolla I've not heard a Tesla sound system, but for the rock/metal/prog that I mostly listen to while driving I find the ML system unbeatable. @Sonymnms 52 I suppose he was volatile when he was told to put his submarine where the sun doesn't shine. I did like though the fact that he open-sourced his company's patents in 2014 to encourage other companies to help the acceleration to sustainable energy for the planet and my Grandchildren. Never seen a CEO do that before.
It's coming. Once they announce their next gen batteries and drive-trains it wouldn't surprise me if they make a deal with a legacy auto maker, maybe even multiple to use their previous gen tech. It will kind of be like computers, instead of "Intel inside" it will be something like "powered by Tesla". I think in a couple more years legacy automakers are going to be begging Tesla to make a deal like this.
@@Ryukachoo I'm not so sure, Elon and the CEO of VW seem to be friends, and the "tech" is the drive train, software, batteries and motors, not the bits of steel and seats that are stuck on top.
Paul Elkington I tend to agree. Why not just sell the “skateboard” and let other makers customize the skin and interior and make it pretty with a nice fit and finish.
There's no answer to any of these questions: How will people who currently buy a car for £1,000 - or even £5,000 - ever afford a car that is electric or hybrid? At those prices, the batteries will be shot. Are we happy to make cars un-affordable for the less wealthy? Is the government going to put charging stations for every car on every pavement? Otherwise, how are people who live in flats - i.e. most people who live anywhere near the centre of a city - going to use an electric car? What about the environmental - and human - cost of all the metals that are in these batteries? The government is making this promise of banning ICE engines seemingly without making any of the difficult - and expensive - decisions. I.e. the current government is claiming all the credit for being 'green', while leaving the problems caused for future governments to sort out.
'Are we happy to make cars un-affordable for the less wealthy?' That's exactly what the UK govt./London mayor/TFL want. Car ownership for everyone used to be seen as a driver of economic growth; now they are just seen as a problem to be ridden of. 'try walking or cycling, pleb!'
Exactly what I’ve been saying. I can afford maybe a few grand, these things are a liability when they’re older and a huge waste. I kind of predict in the future we’ll be hiring them and giving them back for refurb after 3-5 years.

As a Porsche macan GTS and soon Taycan owner I think those complement each other perfectly. I sold my GT4 for the Taycan turbo as a fun spaceship car. The Macan is incredible daily driver. I can understand why the tesla can replace the daily driver car though, quiet and cost saving, but it's not quite there for me as a premium daily. Well reviewed!

Appreciate your even-handed approach - very interesting watch. They're such impressive feats of engineering, but easier to admire than love; I relate to them as an appliance, rather than a living and breathing machine (sound, or lack of, being a big part of it).
Great review! I liked how your skepticism coming in was basically resolved. The unconventional things you get used to really quick, including the speedometer being on the screen. It's similar to how Mini Cooper and I think even the Prius has/had their speedo in the center. If you want theatre, you should've tried Track Mode! As an American, I don't think most people, even car people, would know what their daily drivers did on a drag strip either. The car specs people seem to care about on a daily basis are 0-60 times and peak horsepower. I daily drive a 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD but I've also got a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT (Vauxhall VXR8 / Holden Commodore VE) with a 6.0L V8 that I actually don't drive much because the Tesla is just so good and well rounded at everything. RE: advertising. I think they aren't spending anything on advertising because they just can't produce any more cars than they are currently making. If you've got a waiting list already, making a longer waiting list isn't really any better for anyone. Maybe once Giga Berlin gets built, they'll need to start advertising in Europe because all the Euro-spec cars they're currently making in North America will relieve the factory crunch. Tesla sold more cars in North America in 2019 than BMW did!
I have a Model 3 and a Leaf, and their regen is nothing alike! Except for cold days when the regen is reduced, you simply don't have to touch the brake in the M3. Takes a little practice to learn the braking distances on regen, but once you get the hang of you you rarely touch the brake. I also find the statement that the steering isn't "ultra precise" curious, because both in my own experience and from just about every renowned car reviewer I've read that's exactly what they lauded about the M3 steering, that it is highly precise and quick. Not much feedback, being electric, but super precise. But ok. And regarding the interior, it's actually very German and Bauhaus in concept: form follows function, no unnecessary shape or adornment, just what you need to get the job done. The interior disappears during the driving experience. I used to love German interiors, the BMWs and Mercedes of the 80s and 90s, very driver oriented, every item with a purpose. Nowadays the bling in Mercedes cars is sickening, ridiculous shape choices, excessive use of chromed bits etc. Tesla is what the Germans used to be, I love it.
I think it's an exciting beginning for the brand. I love my 3s-gte powered turbo, manual, awd wagon, but that's had 100 years of technology revisions behind its design. These are only new and will get better and better and better.
Great review Jay. Was interested in your POV as I have a Model 3 arriving in a couple weeks as my new daily. (First EV after a string of BMWs.) Ended up just going with the base model, if you can call a 350HP RWD compact saloon "base"!
Ford and GM spend on average 850 pounds advertising per car sold. Yet sales declining at a rapid rate . Tesla spend 0 pounds on each car sold and yet they cannot build cars fast enough. The fact is if you build a great product it needs no advertising it sells itself. Welcome to tesla
I don't know how it works as far as refunds go in other countries, but the 10k cash discount in American standards mainly comes from tax and government refunds. When I purchased my model 3, I received $3750 for tax (I heard it was 7500 before), $1000 back from my electric and utilities company, and $2500 from the government rebate. That's about 7000. Afterwards, the money I save from zero maintenance and 1/4 cost of fuel, $10000 savings is definitely not far fetched.
If they ever reach a point where manufacturing capacity actually exceeds demand, maybe they will start advertising. Until then, it's kind of useless. Isn't it?

The interior is its market price. My RS6 is nicer inside but it cost twice as much. M2 cost similar but the insides shit and much prefer the Model 3 over the BMW
Note it has winter tires, so would handle better on summer/all-weather. Updating software continuously is also important - especially for those people have to pay to update the in-car satnav....
I'd put up the touchscreen for climate control but the lack of HUD is a let down. Maybe in future models they will improve interior qualiy as the company keeps growing and improving. Great video. Keep up the good work.
Most balanced Tesla review I've ever seen, well done! It's mostly Tesla fans and people that drive them that put others off buying them, not the cars themselves.
As a Normal Brit earning normal wages doing normal mileage with a family in mind, this is well beyond affordable for the masses! £50k is way more than I could dream of affording and even on the 2nd hand market with half dead batteries it will need expensive maintenance so really it's only worth buying new. I went to a Tesla shop (in a shopping centre lol) and looked at the Model 3 and S and I must say the interiors were awful. Already falling apart in the shop with people in and out , they certainly will not age well inside. The interior is very basic and really needs as you say someone with taste to redesign, it is the place you spend you're time and really is an important selling piece especially for me. Yeah, the other 'gripes' didn't make sense either: he doesnt like the lack of dash - but why ? - just sentimental it seems "is it a track-weapon.?.... No." um - maybe look at videos of it where they actually go on a track instead of tiny lanes?
As someone who tracks both a Model 3 and a Miata, please do not write it off as a track weapon before you've tried it. It's serious kit on a circuit. Is it going to give you the same tinglies as a 720s? No. Will it have serious pace alongside the other super saloons? Absolutely. The car comes alive. It has a bit of understeer but it's a small price to pay for being so blisteringly quick out of the corners. Track Mode v2 released this week introduces power bias control. Flick a slider on screen and make it a fully RWD car, and turn the nannies down or off. Eager to get it back on track this spring to see if it can now be dialed in properly to erase that understeer. Put some performance rubber on that thing and take it to Silverstone will you?
Short term reviews like this always seem flawed. It's great that the presenter found the Model 3 to be very surprising and capable. However the specific strengths and weaknesses of the car are found by longer appreciation and will often change. For instance the technology in the Tesla is often held out as well in advance of others but (other than the neat over-the-air updates which mean I am never driving an out of date car) I find most of the advanced driving tech to be less competent than in my eNiro or Mazda CX-5. On the other hand the screen being out of line of your vision quickly becomes the new norm and the idea of a bunch of clutter blocking your forward vision starts to seem bonkers (there is no issue with your knee hitting the screen unless you have your seat in a very funny position for your size). The build quality, whilst not 'luxury' is still better than most other EV's I have owned, and the seats are more comfortable than most too. In general the quality is 'perfectly adequate'. The paint quality on the other hand leaves something to be desired. In the end, find another £58K car that is 4 wheel drive, does 0-60 in 3 seconds, (or £38K in 5 seconds), has great handling, improves as time goes on (the car is now faster, goes further, has 1-pedal driving and host of other features, which it did not have when I bought it), is of a 'reasonable' build quality, costs very little to run and fuel, can comfortably seat five people and take a really good amount of luggage at the same time, is not quite as bad for the environment etc, etc. There simply isn't any other car close to it and that is why Tesla have so many fans. The model 3 is not a perfect car, there are many, many things that could be improved on, but - unlike other manufacturers - you have some certainty that Tesla are working on doing just that and those improvements are coming to the car you already own, not one you have yet to buy.
@SLH SLH Model 3 build quality is on par with Toyota and BMW, but not as good as Mercedes. It's more than adequate. My paint is nearly perfect and on par with most German cars. Later Model 3s are better than very early cars due to the experience effect of getting better at building things. Model 3 is not perfect, but on the whole it's better than pretty much any other similarly sized sedan. Better torque, smoothness, handling, road feel, efficiency, styling, automation, fast charging, over the air updates, etc. Regarding environment, a fossil fuel car can't be powered from sunshine or wind. An EV can. And the grid is increasingly renewables since unsubsidized wind and solar are already cheaper than coal and nuclear. Therefore an EV gets cleaner as the grid gets cleaner. Combustion cars get dirtier as the engine parts wear. At best, they never get cleaner.
Great review, I love my M3P but also love my 4c....... But the 4c seems so "old" now .... I am really looking forward to seeing what the major manufacturers are going to bring out in future
Maybe have opposites, like an S2k. A relatively low powered high revving car and a low down torque heavier car. Take it with a grain of salt as I am only 14
As for it not being a track weapon I have to disagree. I went out in one last week on a wet track day. Was expecting it to be quite dull and ponderous and would miss the noise. Quite the opposite. Was great fun and felt very nimble. More nimble that a car this weight should be. The turn in is sharp and has a very quick steering rack (2 turns lock to lock). The punch out of corners is superb and grip was fabulous (running on Michelin Pilot Sport cup 2). This was in standard track mode and not the V2 track mode. It is a different experience from an ICE track experience and has to be driven slightly differently to be smooth but no less fun. I am used to driving supercharged Lotus’s and older M3’s on track as well as many other types of cars and the Tesla is up there with them in terms of fun. How it will behave and last on a dry track on a warm day is anyone’s guess. Will get to have a go again soon and hopefully with the V2 track mode installed.
Anyone who actually drives a Model 3 for at least a day and then gets back into a regular ICE car, will know how rough, harsh, noisy and somewhat jerky ICE cars are. I loved my Audi RS but hated the drive back in it after testing the Model 3. It is a real game charger and I'm (or was) a massive fan of big engined, fast and noisy sports cars.
My father in law has a Model S P100D and he had huge problems with the dealer while going through the process of buying one, he got messed about for about 8 months but still stuck by the brand and got his car, i think Tesla need to work on their customer service, i also think another problem is all the people that work for Tesla in the UK (sales team) are young people without much experience as now experiencing some difference dealers they are all timenaame, quite blunt and a litrlw rude..you'd expect much more respect when buying a 100K car...the staff handing over the car on collection day didn't know anything about the company or cars.. I still stick by what i say that they do make great cars but need to improve in many places. Thanks for the video James. 👍
Mr JBCars Agreed. The buying and collection experience is poor as are communications in general. Luckily the product is excellent. They’re a young company so hopefully the other areas will improve.
"It's the electric car for the masses. This particular model is just over £50,000." *laughs in poor* (I realise the dual-motor performance is going to cost more than the base, but still when the average UK salary is somewhere in the £35k range, i wouldn't call it affordable for the masses!) Appreciate a skeptics review, for the same reasons you state at the start, everyone on the internet sings their praises.
That's the top of the range one. As for a thirty odd grand car not being for the masses. Have you actually been on a road lately? I don't live in a rich area or anything but it seems every other car is less than 3 years old, probably on a lease deal or something. I think they're out of their minds paying £300 a month half of them can barely afford to drive a German rep-mobile but they most certainly are doing.
Considering man made Climate change is a hoax this is the real reasons for electric cars- in the future driving will be only for the rich, not the masses.
@@TheMentalblockrock Hmm... who to believe, 99% of climate scientists? Or right-wing politicians, the oil companies who back them financially, the tax-dodging billionaire-owned media who support it all, and the politicians' duped followers?
@@markg55 You're right, seems to be a UK thing that most people lease something new and expensive. Have colleagues who lease and think that £270 a month is cheap. One who's just turned 21 got himself a lease on a brand new 320i. Meanwhile im driving an 18 year old e46 that only cost me £1850 total!
They daren't advertise - they can't keep up with demand and are currently battery constrained. If they started to advertise before they've built up their capacity to make batteries, they'll just generate ever-longer waiting lists for orders to be fulfilled.
The image on your screen that shows right before a possible crash is not there to distract you from the road, it's to distract you from your screen if you are touching it or playing with your screen while driving, pretty nice feature too.
I can tell you the autonomous parking feature is pretty bad, a guy on my street has one and it always ends up 3ft form the kerb blocking half the lane making the street a single carriage way 🤬
Since we in the UK are weird, we buy fuel by the litre but measure distances by the mile, fuel economy in Miles per litre is actually the easiest and most obvious metric to work out for yourself. My car takes 55 litres to fill and does about 400 miles on a tank. You don't have to do any annoying conversions to get back to a metric you can look up.
I wonder if he knows the Model 3 performance beat the Ferrari 458 Italia on a track (with Pilot Sports Cup 2 tires and Paul Pobst). And, I'm not talking about a straight line.
I’m American & I agree that the Tesla interior is cheap & ugly. This is one of the reasons why I own a Porsche. Porsches have the whole package, beautiful style, beautiful interior & amazing driving experience. However, I have considered a Tesla for my daily commute & I have never doubted their acceleration capabilities.
The slippery slope to cars becoming as anonymous as white fridges ? Bear in mind government will not tolerate car drivers dodging the typically £2000 fuel duty and VED revenue each year EV drivers currently avoid - they will get it back from all of you as soon as there is a bit more take up.
They "to Me" seems on par with Iphones.. uselessly technical and tied into ridiculous processes that means you cant do any self maintenance...but i guess its a good business model ...
This just shows how much there is to educate about electric cars. Power train is free of maintenance, but suspension, steering and brakes parts are same as regular cars and cheaply available.
'd like to know how touch-screen controls compare with buttons 'n' switches. At night-time especially, isn't it distracting and unsafe to hunt on-screen for entertainment/ heat/ foglamps/ seat adjustment/ whatever, compared with feeling for usage-memorised, individually-sited, ergonomically-shaped, manual controls? And, even in night mode, what does that screen do to the driver's night vision?
I just find the Model 3 too sterile with no character. They should make it more aggressive and sporty looking and add some sporty noise like the Porche Taycan has. Give it a soul.
@@carsonj1 I unfortunately don't have high-hopes for the Tesla Roadster 2.0 It will likely follow the same trend. Most people purchase a car because they feel attracted to its character. The latest Alfa Quadrifoglio has lots of this for example, and its not necessarily all perfect, but it is an attractive value proposition. I love my wife for her faults not because she is perfect. Same argument goes for a car.

@@superseven7947 yeah I'm just saying there is at least a reason to its looks and considering other automakers attempts for low drag vehicles I'd say its top 3 for sure. I don't think Tesla struggles with finding a good designer but they have an efficiency standard to work within
I have a lot of respect for Tesla and the innovation we have seen. One must always be mindful though of safety. I remember how annoying my first mini was with its central Speedo. We are allowed to criticise if warranted. A heads up or similar to put it in line of sight is the way to go. Also ancillary controls like the heater etc should be intuitive to use not placed on a tablet display. Voice command if it works though would suffice. EVs will always be an issue for some who are passionate about cars, it's not about the innovation it's about losing the sensory experience of hearing the engine, changing gear and being in control of the machine. The EV party piece is acceleration. That's it really. To me an EV is ideal for the daily commute. As a source of fun, no not for me I'm afraid. I like cars as a hobby not appliances on wheels. I think the comment about a dodgem car nail it. No skill required and just another step towards automation.
I am impressed by your review. Its balanced and refrains from nit picking on fine detail just because you need to criticise something. You make a very good point about the heads up display which should be included at the first opportunity to review the design. I would have thought they'd include it on a premium model. The large display screen is not without its merrits but the important stuff should be in front of the driver

@@stinger15au 1. You haven't answered this point: what do you do if you live in a flat (apartment) and so have no driveway - run the flex over the pavement? As I've said elsewhere, you need charging points on pavements for that to happen - that's not happening at the moment. There ARE (the plural of 'is') solutions, but they require the government to put the infrastructure in place. And the UK gov. is not doing that. 2. All it shows is you haven't driven one. 3) Then you drive for about 4 hours and take a 30mins stop like you would on any other journey. If you are not doing that, you should be. Stop for lunch even. On extremely niche roads or trips, there might be a extra hour of downtime over a 2 day journey. A VERY small price to pay for the 80% savings it cost to run a EV for the entire year I would argue. the MAJORITY of people are not routinely doing 800mile journeys every day where a EV might not make as much sense (although it would save 10's of thousands on fuel and payback the car in less than a year if that was the case) The truth is, the extra hour of your life on the random 1000mile road trip every now and then, is not a big deal. Hey Jay, one note about the not advertising. Tesla currently has a HUGE backlog of orders. They cannot ship any more because they are running at full capacity.
I did enjoy hearing your thoughts, cheers.

@Sunamer Z its just to know that the driver is still paying attention to the road, the car received 5 star rating on safety for a reason (not only in crashes), it won't drive over kids lol.
Thanks Doug!
After all, the M3 is designed to be a track focused car, not as a comfortable daily driver.

As demand increases, the cost will go down (until the government realise how much tax revenue they're losing, but that's another story).
your right about the government.
Car prices are going up not down this will never be a car for the masses
As a BMW M owner with a friend who has a model 3 the assumption that an M5 would be better over certain speeds needs one caveat. The BMW driver would need to be very talented and those speeds would be a jail sentance on British roads.
Andy Fox so, how much did you spend on the car? Financed or cash? Thanks for the info.
400 a month on gas... i beg your pardon??????

People may buy a new EV in 5 years, but well made EVs will easily last 1 million miles, with a battery pack change or two. Old battery packs are being used for grid storage, or can be recycled. Almost nothing of EV battery packs is wasted or not reused or recycled.
Don't believe the anti-EV lies constantly being put out by oil companies. Do the math for yourself.

There's no answer to any of these questions:
How will people who currently buy a car for £1,000 - or even £5,000 - ever afford a car that is electric or hybrid?

Embarrassing and inconvenient and never happens with any other brand. Or maybe they just don't get the publicity when they cock up, which they most certainly do. How many vehicles have they sold and how many incidents like this have there been? We can be assured that, because they're Teslas, we've seen them all.
Appreciate your even-handed approach - very interesting watch. They're such impressive feats of engineering, but easier to admire than love; I relate to them as an appliance, rather than a living and breathing machine (sound, or lack of, being a big part of it).
I enjoyed that. A fair and balanced review from a real 'car guy'.
Fantastic review, I’m sold.

Isn't it?
Watching this video 3 years later and look at that! The prophecy came to be! Tesla is now advertising and doing discounts.

I have watched so many of these reviews and I have to admit yours is way up there. Can't beat an English accent for commentating and I'm from NZ.
They are shipping as fast as they can make the Model 3. So they should waste money on advertising so they can big up a bigger backlog?
Yeah, the other 'gripes' didn't make sense either:
he doesnt like the lack of dash - but why ? - just sentimental it seems
"is it a track-weapon.?....
I asked Tesla themselves for a car for a week to address the exact issue you talk about but they wouldn't even respond to me

There is no dealer for one thing
@@stinger15authats correct, they are closing them down and changing some of them into tesla service stations
Tesla service used to be great but that started to turn around a year or two ago. It is now awful. Shame because the cars are great.
"It's the electric car for the masses. This particular model is just over £50,000."
*laughs in poor*
(I realise the dual-motor performance is going to cost more than the base, but still when the average UK salary is somewhere in the £35k range, i wouldn't call it affordable for the masses!)
Appreciate a skeptics review, for the same reasons you state at the start, everyone on the internet sings their praises.
@@dasstig5274 Same here, an apprentice at work, just passed his test. The idea of just buying an old car seemingly hadn't even occurred to him.
They daren't advertise - they can't keep up with demand and are currently battery constrained. If they started to advertise before they've built up their capacity to make batteries, they'll just generate ever-longer waiting lists for orders to be fulfilled.
Already looking forward to your review of the new Taycan!
The image on your screen that shows right before a possible crash is not there to distract you from the road, it's to distract you from your screen if you are touching it or playing with your screen while driving, pretty nice feature too.
I can tell you the autonomous parking feature is pretty bad, a guy on my street has one and it always ends up 3ft form the kerb blocking half the lane making the street a single carriage way 🤬
Cornwall1888 prop doesnt have the function. It’s a extra. It parks really close
ER van Dam maybe you’re right and he just can’t park so should have it
Since we in the UK are weird, we buy fuel by the litre but measure distances by the mile, fuel economy in Miles per litre is actually the easiest and most obvious metric to work out for yourself.
AscendedSaiyan3 cool story bro

Of course they will, but if I can save money and the planet in the meantime... why wouldn't I?
Never heard of a Toyota Camry?
I've had more fun in my "fridge" than I ever had in any of my previous cars.
Thanks for another honest review...pokes at both Mclaren and Audi...
I'm an equal opportunity disser
They "to Me" seems on par with Iphones.. uselessly technical and tied into ridiculous processes that means you cant do any self maintenance...but i guess its a good business model ...
Err there is no maintenance to do, that's the point. All the drive units are sealed for the life of the car of 1+million miles.
Richard Kok You can always program engine sounds into its sound system like a lot of ICE cars do nowadays.
Case in point the new BMW i4 that was launched at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. Now that in my opinion is a sexy looking electric vehicle.
thats why you get the white interior..nobody notices the cheap interior because its so bright! my m3p is white on white and I love it. Sold a m3 and a sr20det swapped 240 to make room for it.
As I've been saying for quite some time: the worst thing about owning a tesla is being associated with musk's fanboys
What 18" wheels are on this? And tyres need to change my 20s on m3p 2020 for winter
Looks good, problem with M3 or an M4 is how much they loose in depreciation...hope to see you soon #ashgood. We have a Taycan turbo coming in
True. Ran a M3 a year for so ago for 18 months. Lost about 18k 😐 Had my M3P for 6 months now and the few 2nd hand ones about are commanding full price or more?
If you boot that Tesla, how much range will you have? I mean can you drive it hard and still be able to get home without charging it?
Dull looking but impressive performance. They need to inject some real passion into the design.. Get a proper design house to style it make it more desirable to people who love cars.
@@user-to2rf1rj5v most beautiful car in the world? I think that title is held by the Jaguar e type or perhaps the lamborghini miura..alfa romeo 33 stradale.. Mercedes gull wing.. to only name a few .. Designed with purpose, passion and real beauty.. I get it that new innovation has to begin somewhere and times are changing but as an old petrol head it's going to take something that doesn't look like a bland, everyday household appliance to grab my attention
Drag coefficient. When you compare it to a Prius then you might understand that it is actually great looking haha
@@larryspiller15 everyone is entitled to their opinion and 'beauty' is in the eye of the beholder
@@superseven7947 yeah I'm just saying there is at least a reason to its looks and considering other automakers attempts for low drag vehicles I'd say its top 3 for sure. I don't think Tesla struggles with finding a good designer but they have an efficiency standard to work within
Jay which would you choose between this car and the stinger ?
Totally agree with this review. Sort the heads up display and get the interior sorted.
Excellent review!
"I can't wait to see what comes next"
... That would be Plaid ;)
The Tesla vehicles were designed by the ghostwriter of Spaceballs.
It's got winter tyres on for some reason...u don't need them in the UK they will just wear out fast
Umm, you can test drive at the mall ‘shops’. Clearly you haven’t researched this part well?
I am impressed by your review. Its balanced and refrains from nit picking on fine detail just because you need to criticise something. You make a very good point about the heads up display which should be included at the first opportunity to review the design. I would have thought they'd include it on a premium model. The large display screen is not without its merrits but the important stuff should be in front of the driver
Not if you live in a flat.
Or like a car that doesn't sound like a milk float.
Or enjoy the convenience of not taking hours to fill it with 'fuel'.
The internet is never to be believed.
1) There is solutions if you take the time to look for them
2) Ok boomer
3) It takes about 5seconds to "fill", you goto sleep and wake up with it full every day. Comparing it directly is the wrong way of thinking about it.
@@stinger15au
2. Why are you calling people whose age you don't know 'boomer'? Do you know what the term means? (I'm not, by the way.)
3. What if you're on a long journey? Does it take 5 sec to fill then?
@@julianevans9548 1) I don't currently but have before. There is options, some of which have the government involved, some don't.
2) Because the comment is stupid and factually incorrect. It would be like saying a Porsche 911 is the same thing as a Model T, it isn't.
A VERY small price to pay for the 80% savings it cost to run a EV for the entire year I would argue.
the MAJORITY of people are not routinely doing 800mile journeys every day where a EV might not make as much sense (although it would save 10's of thousands on fuel and payback the car in less than a year if that was the case)
The truth is, the extra hour of your life on the random 1000mile road trip every now and then, is not a big deal. Not when it saves so much money and is just plain better the other 362 days when you literally spend zero time charging.
@@stinger15au 1. So,
1. Still unable to answer the point.
2. Still don't seem to know what 'boomer' means.
And still calling others stupid whilst not knowing the plural of 'is'. (That makes it very hard to take you seriously.)
Here in the states, the bloom is off the rose. We are expecting Tesla to fit proper interiors and improve the styling. They are popular but time to up their game.
