You are kind of right. When I got my first EV in 2014 a 220 mile trip involved an hour of pre-planning and three stops of ~40 minutes each. I’ve just ordered an ID.3 Tour (77kWh) and I know that I need to stop more often than the car does (because I have the bladder of a man in his fifties) so the plan for long journeys now is just to plug it in every time I need to stop. However, the charging infrastructure has always been there since 2014; it’s less reliable than it was seven years ago, and upgrades aren’t rolling out as fast as they could, but as long as you keep a contingency (20% on the ID.3 would be >50 miles) and use ZapMap or Plugshare, you will always find a working charger when you need one.
With 7 miles of range left, imagine if it had been Richard that had made a wrong turn, or there'd been a bit of motorway closed, with an enforced diversion (which happens quite frequently to me, in my experience).

Really surprised that no-one else is interested in the cost aspect of this event. Even though they arrived at the same time I'd be willing to bet that the journey cost twice as much in the Audi given the chargers used vs the cheap superchargers. So taking that into account a victory for the Tesla.

Same reason cop computers are legal. The law is inconsistent as fuck.
Most traffic laws are hypocritical.
Most people look at that dash in their modern ICE cars anyways lol. The GPS is always over their. Most people change their volume and stations over there. The temp control in most ice cars is actually in a lower location than the Tesla screen. Lol

Well can't say this wasn't entertaining, but watching it with some friends we think we worked out why it worked so well. All of us got the feeling of a "normal car" vs "EV" vibe here because the Audi just blends in sooooooo nicely and it *doesn't* feel like an evil EV, which is out to destroy the rest of the cars. I love your channel but I own a diesel and I make trips like that often here in the States and I can guarantee you that I spend nowhere near 45mins at petrol stations for that amount of miles. There are a few big problems with electric cars for now. 1. You would need to drive an electric car 400,000 miles to break even on emissions with a gas car. ( fact, look at the science) 2. They generate a large EMF field in the cab from the battery and the motors.
This is definitely one of the best ever Carwow videos

Comparison to a petrol/diesel powered car would have been interesting as well. Seeing how much more time (if any) you need with an e-car compared to an ICE powered car for the same journey.
An ICE car could be about 1h faster, maybe 1h 15m if it can do the whole journey on one tank. The driver might need a break or two though anyway.
I would also have been interested to know how much it cost to do the journey in each car.

Loved this so much. The charging speed with the Audi is ridiculously quick. Definitely won it for Richard. (And Matt's silly mistake going North instead of South) 🔥
Summary:
Both cars made it in similar timing, the Tesla doing so comfortably and fully charging and the Audi going to the limit and maximising charging speed.
Both drivers recognise the Tesla would be comfortably better when using the same strategy.
