Welcome to the greatest Audi drag race of all time!
We’ve brought together SIX high-performance Audis to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile to see which is the must-have Audi RS in 2022.
But can you pick a winner? The most expensive car here is the R8 V10 Performance, packing a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 that can produce 620hp & 580Nm of torque. But don’t be fooled into thinking the biggest price tag guarantees it a victory! After all, the RS e-tron GT may cost £35,000 less, but it’s still the most powerful car here! Its two electric motors combine to put down 637hp & 830Nm of torque!

RSQ8 I think has had a stage 1 remap, my guess is its sitting around 680-700hp. New idea for car wow videos is "car wow dyno of truth" the manufacturers say it has 400hp but let's find out on the car wow dyno of truth 😁 it will be a big hit i bet.
This is a nice idea, it could even highlight some of the curiosities I've got around press cars having a better tune than standard.
If you look at drag races involving the Golf R for example, you'll notice that the press cars were noticeably faster in the quarter mile than customer cars.

I would be returning that R8 back to Audi and telling them not to return it until they have fixed that launch problem and removed the soft limiter. That is outrageous!!

You know that R8 is not turboed, right? So the launch gonna be bad comparing to all these. Look at the difference with shifting when they start from 50mph. V10 is monster there.
But yes that doesnt change a fact that the launch did not work properly right there.
The fastest time for R8 they've done is 10.7. I dunno what happened with it this time, but 10.7 would've easily won the race.

@@matisamiec6791119 The R8 not being turbocharged has nothing to do with its poor launch performance. Quite the contrary actually, turbocharged vehicles usually have poor launch performance unless you artificially build boost by brake boosting before the launch. Initial acceleration is best benefited by high torque numbers, something which turbocharged vehicles usually lack when in the low RPM range during launch.

@Wastelander The results seems very strange here. They probably didn't clock every car separately right? RsQ8, Rs5 and Rs6 were all faster than normal here.
Rs6 normally runs 11.5-11.7, RsQ8 around 11.8-12.0, Rs5 around 12.0.
I got a feeling that only the Rs Etron 11.1 was accurate and the other times were adjusted?

@Neon I don’t think it’s regulated tho, that’s the thing. Many BMWs don’t have it, some AMGs, even the MK8 Golf R. And I can’t think of any Italian and Japanese cars that have that.

Why ? The power : weight ratios are similar.
This RS3 is brand-new, whereas the RS5 is 5 years old. Even so, the old RS3 isn't far behind.
The more I think about it, the more I realise its not that surprising - RS5 has 1 more cylinder and about 400cc more giving it 50hp over the RS3, but more body so its heavier by about 150kg which probably negates the extra engine strength and power.
The RS4/5 is a bitter disappointment in every aspect. Weak engine and it’s fat.
That RS3 does itself no shame in the Drag Race. Sure it's last, but 0.7s behind the RS-E-tron despite being over 200bhp down is damn good going, that is a bloody fast car! Especially as the E-tron is more than double the price of the RS3.
Well I own one 8v not 8y, and the Sound can just be beaten from the R8 and RS6 C7.
Why conpare to the E-Tron the R8 is more expensive again and slower in the drag races.
They are all brilliant cars i would be proud to own any of them

Little trick with the soft limiter Mat.
Put it in drive, let the car roll forward slightly and chuck it in neutral. You will then be able to rev all you want!
I think it only works if u roll a bit faster

I think R8 was launched cold. The tires need warm up for such a high HP car. Matt has done 10.7 sec quarter mile at least 3 different drag races. Even in the below video, he realized it after first launch and did the tire warmup and the second run was golden. Not sure why he didn't do the same.

Launch control on my R8 holds at 4500 RPM. If the engine isn’t warm then it won’t engage. This was an awesome Audi race!

Looks like TC or ESC is intervening. I have no idea how it is in dynamic mode. Maybe set the rev limiter for the LC alot higher.

The new ones are shit. I had the previous one and it was mad. But yeah needs to be race mode and you hold the traction button for 5 seconds. Otherwise it switches gears like it dot with him and bogs down

What’s crazy is that a $500 and half an hour ecu tune to the rs3 will actually get you close to the ev performance. Incredible car.
The R8 seems to be panic shifting during launch control instead of just letting it bounce off the limiter until it gains traction. This causes it to shift into second gear when it’s only doing 18-26mph which then takes the rpm below its power curve.
Then maybe he had to put in in manual mode
Can’t these modern TCU (transmission control unit) will automatically upshift before the rev limiter

Because he's doing it wrong. ESP in sport, gearbox in Auto Performance and it will start like from slingshot. Without ESP it just spins wheels and will upshift right before rev limiter, that's why it bogdown.

@@towely4717 it's for fun but also to compare vehicles, and many viewers think it's a true braking comparison. CarWow uses testing equipment in other reviews that are for fun.
The reason the RSQ8 is faster than the RS6 is because like all heavier cars with the same engine and running gear, the ecu's are mapped differently as they are pulling more weight so once the car is up to speed its gained momentum so pulls longer and harder than the lighter model with the same running gear. I noticed this with an astra vxr and a zafira vxr both totally standard and same year but the zafira out run the astra. Its based on the mapping..
RSQ8 soft limiter has been raised, so clearly it has been tuned. RS6 said he hit 3,000 rpm with same motor as the RSQ8 so if he is revving higher then it has been tuned and explains why it was pulling on the RS6 in the drag races especially rolling start
Good catch, I agree. It does also have enough muscle to take advantage of the multiplication of a torque converter, which I think makes a top end difference as well.
Not every engine is the same, sometimes the stats lie in the RSQ8's owner's defence

The 275/35r21 tire on the RS6 has a circumference of 89.8" which is smaller than the 98.3" 295/40r22 tire on the RSQ8. If both had stock tires and rims for the model plus same gearing, transmissions and engine, then it makes sense that the RS6 had quicker acceleration but the RSQ8 had a higher top speed over the mile.
(A tip for Audi) hope mat reads this.

Awesome comparison! As an Audi fanboy it’s good to see how they compete with each other. Would love to see them tuned to their max and then raced.
Considering that Audi nowadays gets blown outta the water by its competitors this is really the only type of content that us Audi fanboys can enjoy.
Surely Audi is hiding some hp/torque in the case of the RSQ8. Even if the R8 V10 Plus bogged down in its launch, it's just not possible for the RSQ8 weighing about 700kg more, having the same hp as the R8 and the same powertrain and hp/torque figures as the lower, more aerodynamic and 300kg lighter RS6 and still coming in front of both and with this level of consistency (except for the rolling races, in which the R8 has the kickdown advantage and gets up faster but, still, the RSQ8 just leaves the RS6 in its dust).
or the dude in the rs6 just acccidently put in 87 lol, car would have to lower timing etc and would have lessp ower lol
or the rsq8 has bigger (surely way bigger judging by the front bumper grills ) intercoolers which help the turbos coool down the boost so the engine sustains its peak hp rating better and longer than the rs6
Was the sq8 1/4 mile time faster than usual. I guess if not then something somewhere is giving that car some extra mph at the top end.

Either RSQ8 was well "broken in", or it's tuned. I know M5s are like this. They were slower when they were first launched, then they pick up additional performance after a while. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.
All cars are like that.
it seems like the engines are assembled manually, and there is a video on youtube where stock cars are measured at the stand and they showed a spread of up to 80 hp.
@@MrRakushin this is especially noticeable with turbocharged cars, since they are harder to control than let's say NA ones. And some being hand-built, well... In case you get lucky, you get a faster car than the rest 😁

Not well broken in as such, these days the management regulates torque and power that much that such a difference of cylinder compression for example is compensated
I bet that RSQ8 was tuned. No way that brick should pull on the top end over an RS6.
Mat, I think that the R8 is having Launch ctrl issues due to the soft limiter. Since it's in it's first generation it must realise that it's past it's 3000 rpm limiter and then it bogs to 2nd then it realises it actually needs to move. That's probably why it bogs from 1st down to 2nd on a launch. This is first generation stuff and hopefully they fix this Launch ctrl issue. Note I am not a rocket scientist or engineer I am just a normal person that can figure this out. Don't worry Mat, this will hopefully not be an issue later on
Perhaps Audi handicaps older r8 models via wifi update so to sell more new cars

I don't believe that is the case at 8:15, the car is detecting too much wheelspin, and high RPM which is causing the ECU to shift to second to get traction. Cool weather will cause any road to do that, even on a AWD/4WD car.

That V10 is one for the ages for sure, but soft limiter, who cares? I’ll tell you who cares, car spotters that count on other people to rev it for their kicks/entertainment. It’s about the driver enjoying himself on the move, not impressing and entertaining other people. It’s nice, but it shouldn’t as big a deal as people make it out to be, revving stationary is just childish.

Thats what the stage 1 remap does to this engines :) 120hp and 200nm more aproximate than stock. Stock RSQ8 can't beat RS6, it's not possible.

@@zyneeee check the br performance page, and you can see that they managed to pump the hp from 600 to 723, and torque from 800 to 1033nm. They did stage 1 on two RSQ8's.

I think they are chiptuned, the RS5 in this channel always do 12,1 or 12 seconds in the best chance, how in the world he can shave 0,4 seconds? It's an automatic car with 4WD so the driver dont have that influence i think!
Rs3 isn't tuned, it's only just come out and the ecu is still locked.

If you want to turn rev/soft limiter on any car do this press brake put gear between p and r while holding the shift lock rev the car and it will go to the highest rev the car got

I would take the RS3 - absolutely gorgeous 5-cylinder. Some casual tuning up to 450 hp and you are as fast as an RS5, RS6...
I would take the R8 - absolutely gorgeous 10-cylinder. Some casual tuning (turbo) up to 1000 hp and you are as fast as an Bugatti Veyron etc. It was drag stock cars so please dont write about casual tuning.. :p
But if you tune the rs5/6 it works be even faster. I’d take the r8 but the soft limiter is the reason I didn’t buy one and the reason I will never buy one

At 450hp it would smash the rs5....its the only affordable car in the range for me....so thats the one ill have to get..
RS3 tune and minor bolt ons for 550 bhp... roughly 5k USD and remains a normal car. R8 TT kit 50k+ usd...

Was dynamic. That is not the highest setting there should be a performance button on the steering. Push that mate.

These soft limits and EVs remind me why I love my V8 RS5 so much. Akrapovic Evolution and 8300+ rpm limit of beautiful sound... Stage 1 and some intake mods at 460HP shes not shabby on the power either.
For the R8 it's best to buy a 2019 model. The newer models have particular filters, soft limiters, and also temperamental launches. They ruin the super car experience.

Audi RS3 and RSQ8 are very impressive! But I think the RSQ8 have a Chip-Tuning!
The fact that the RS6 takes the lead on Audis fully fledged supercar; and the the fact that the new G82 Bmw M4 is on par with the new RS6, goes to show how backwards Audis actually are.

To be fair,the r8 is basically using a modernized engine from 2008. Just imagine if they turbocharged it how fast it would be.
@@brad6491 The 4.0L in the RS6 is from 2011, so it's not really about the age of the engine. In this case it was all about the R8's reluctance to launch properly. It should do a sub-11 second 1/4-mile with ease.

Nobody does backwards better than Audi 😂😂 just try to scroll on the infotainment on any pre-2015 Audi with MMI. Even the windshield wiper controls work the opposite of how you expect.
But all jokes aside, I feel like in the case of the R8, it’s just a software issue. Motor Trend was able to get a 10.6 second run in the 1/4 mile with the 2017 R8 V10 Plus. Mind you, that’s with 10 less hp than this.
Until a few weeks ago I would NEVER have watched anything to do with an Audi or most other foreign brands but I am watching because I enjoy your show. Thanks for the good work!
Only additional car I would have loved seeing in this matchup Mat is the S8 which I know you just featured in another video - with the ~3.5 second 0-60 you observed I’m sure it probably would have placed somewhere in this pack with a mid/hi 11 second quarter mile - great race all the same!

Also that RSQ8 is tuned for sure - there’s no way that what is essentially the same engine in the RSQ8 and RS6 runs faster/quicker in a heavier and less aerodynamic body

I think it’s simply because they let the cars stand there for multiple hours and tires and engine gets cold. R8 has a very aggressive launch and in order to not get wheelspin u have to warm the tires. Wheelspin= bog down
Actually the rsq8 is really this fast. Nothing weird or tunes or anything like that. Rsq8 is about 0.3 slower than rs6

@@adamlohr4287 I know that the R8 launches aggressively but why do they put the car in manual mode instead of letting the car handle the launch in its entirety ? As in: why does he have to pull the paddles ? The R8 does not require you to shift manually when using launch control - That is what I’m asking
