All I can tell you is that you got this way of teaching down like no one else: simple short sentences, no talk, pitch perfect speed and timing, truly elementary.. I hit that subscribe button faster that ever before. Cudos to you good sir, and cudos again!
I think this is by far the best tutorial, it lays out steps in the way a musician would construct a sound, not by some preconceived logic, but naturally. Also, each step is illustrated perfectly with a new sound quality.
I'm late to the party having just purchased the DX but this and Part 2 were very helpful. Looking forward to watching the rest. Thanks for doing this series.
This was a VERY GOOD tutorial. You really nailed it with those explanations, what different things do and how you could think of them in terms of a more "traditional" synthesis. This really helped me to grasp things (just got my Reface DX yesterday :) ). Thanks!
Between this video and Phil Clendenin's explanation (sans heavy math) on the Yamahasynth web site, FM is going to be a lot easier for a lot of people to work with. Thank you very much!
Almost ordered a DX100 but found the Reface DX. I have a soft spot for old PC-98 FM synthesis chiptunes so I'm excited to get down and dirty with this, especially since I just got a text saying it was delivered. :D
Thank you very much! Buy one of these and didn't understnd how to program it coz I was use to soustractive analog. So thanks again, feel now like it was worth the money!
Howdy! I'm definitely getting a DX! They are awesome, as are your videos, too! Thanks! Please make videos on how to accurately imitate famous synth solos, from such classics as: ELP'S Luck Man, In the Beginning, Edgar Winter's Frankenstein, etc. That's my goal, to use the DX to play the synth solos on the keyboard, while listening to the remastered radio versions available on RUclips! Oh, yeah!
The Reface line is still alluring in spite of it’s annoying little quirks. I have a feeling that people with synth-caves is much more likely to fire up a Reface for couch noodling/ composing before their Jupiter’s or DSI's... Pretty please Yamaha: drop a Mk2's soon! Reface SY.. Oooh Yeah!
Thanks for sharing! This was really useful. While the Reface's screen is a vast improvement over the DX7, I still wish Yamaha had released a standalone editor with it.
+Alex S. Glad you found it useful! Agree with Frau Hase on the knobs, it's a tricky choice, as cheap knobs would have been worse. I find the touch-controls ok to use, but I lost count on how many times I try to adjust parameters directly on the screen :-S
I find it difficult to use the touch sliders precisely. And same here re pressing the screen. 😄 I feel, rotary encoders would have been ok for the purpose.
+Stochastic Design lol i do that too but still great little synth i love it , its my first synth thats away from the computer and am gettin a korg minilogue soon to use along side it cant wait
Thank you for, uploading very informative video. If only they inserted a little oscilloscope like on the Minilogue...well, it would have been very useful. But on the other hand you can still output the signal through the Minilogue and instantly see the result of soundshaping with FM synthesis
Maybe someone will make a battery operated oscilloscope for the DX, that would plug into the line out jack? It would attach to the DX by sticky Velcro, so that you can remove it, when you pack up the synth.
Thanks so much for this video! So it's very easy to program a sound has several octaves in one? E.g. one note has a low bass note, together with an octave above, with another octave above?
+Stochastic Design making a a ultra modern tchami patch would be cool, i can get quite close with thor in reason but not got to grips with the dx yet as i have not had it long , although one thing it does well is the low end its so heavy
The DX is sequenced from the QX5fd sequencer, the simple drum beat was programmed directly into the internal sequencer of the RX11 and synced via MIDI.
Sorry but I can't see how anyone thinks this is useful. You can't see what the user is doing wuth their right hand. They are pressing buttons but you can't see what they are doing. I would really like to see this but I can't. I have tried this on various devices but all are exactly the same.

Oh you're a real homie for this. Wish all RUclips tutorials could be in this style and so concise!
I'm late to the party having just purchased the DX but this and Part 2 were very helpful. Looking forward to watching the rest. Thanks for doing this series.

Fantastic! I’ve enjoyed my reface dx for a few years now, using stock sounds and soundmondo grabs. Finally getting into synthesis thanks to you!
So glad I found your channel! Time for a binge watch I reckon!
+donkeyfacekilla1 Don't forget snacks! :)
Thank you so much for posting this. With my reface I feel like I'm going in blind, I know nothing about FM synthesis. This helped a ton!
+Nicholas MusicianBada We used to share that same frustration, and we want to help others "get it". Glad it was useful to you!
Nice Lesson! Explains FM so well, especially how it relates to subtractive synthesis.
This is the perfect FM tutorial I didn't know I needed! Brilliant!
Brilliant video, thanks for taking the time
Just getting one comment like this makes it worthwhile.
Thanks, but it would be nice to see what buttons you're pushing to get to some of the menus.
Best FM tutorial ever
+Giulio Fassina Thank you!

Thank you very much!
+Filthy McNasty Thank you, that's what we're aiming for! FM is too good synthesis to require a PhD.
Almost ordered a DX100 but found the Reface DX. I have a soft spot for old PC-98 FM synthesis chiptunes so I'm excited to get down and dirty with this, especially since I just got a text saying it was delivered. :D
Thanks for tutorials. I’ve been thinking about buying this synth.
This is not a bad alternative to the real deal and a whole lot less "hissy". Great JOB!
Thank you! Agree, but it has its quirks. (And so does the original)
Thanks for this really helpful video. Planning to work through all of these.
Fantastic video, so clear and concise and with a sick jam at the end. Can't wait for pt.2!
+Anonymous Animal 2 Glad you liked it, and thanks for the feedback! Part 2 is almost ready to upload, stay tuned!
Ahhhhhhhhh finally I am starting to get this!!
Dope jam at the end man
these videos are gr8. copping one of these tomorrow
Thats very cool, I was feeling stuck with my DX and now I understand the tricks for making intersting patches!
Keep the good work!
Glad it helped, stay tuned!
This was fantastic. Thank you.

Keep practicing, and thanks for commenting!
I have to have one! Thank you for the awesome demos!!
Thank you 🙏, I know I’m many years behind 😉
Nicely done, sounds great! Thanks for this - I learned some stuff 😊🤟🙏🤓

verry good tutorials for fm newbies like me. thanks.
Glad it's of help, thanks!

EVERY synth should have an oscilloscope, now that you mention it. But you're right, it would really help to visualize FM on the DX.
Maybe someone will make a battery operated oscilloscope for the DX, that would plug into the line out jack? It would attach to the DX by sticky Velcro, so that you can remove it, when you pack up the synth.
これ見てたらどうやって音作ればいいか分かった。欲しくなった。ありがとう!
Great..! +Stochastic Design . Good work!
+Ant GM Thanks!
Thanks. Enjoying my DX and FM in general. :-)
+paulie rendle Great! :-)
Hi - do you have an idea of the settings I would use to use this for a Talkbox?
Thanks so much for this video! So it's very easy to program a sound has several octaves in one? E.g. one note has a low bass note, together with an octave above, with another octave above?
Thank you! Yes, all operators can be tuned, for instance an octave or two apart as you describe, but also fifths etc.
Thank You! Though my ears bleed a bit now, Ive learned a lot since my DX Reface didnt come with a manual
Hey great video!
+Acekorv Thanks!
Really awesome, thorough video. Thanks!
Thank you! :)
I'm trying to find a synth that is on par with the old pss-480. Is this it?
Great tutorial! thx
+DeathByDinSync Glad you liked it!
Does it have an acoustic piano sound ?
nice video i want to know more about the lfo part!
+Jupiter Ghost Thanks for the feedback, I'll be sure to bring it up. We will delve a bit into waveshaping first!
+Stochastic Design making a a ultra modern tchami patch would be cool, i can get quite close with thor in reason but not got to grips with the dx yet as i have not had it long , although one thing it does well is the low end its so heavy
Thank you.
Great !!! Tankks !
+Ariel Carmeli Glad you liked it!
So its oscillators now not operators?
I have no idea what buttons you are hitting on the right.
Can it take batteries
Yes it can
Cool!
+beephouse Thanks!
SOrry but Im confused about the end! Is your dx sequenced from the Qx as well as the drums?
The DX is sequenced from the QX5fd sequencer, the simple drum beat was programmed directly into the internal sequencer of the RX11 and synced via MIDI.
Thanks so much for the reply, it sounds great when theyre synced. Im shocked
Thank for showing us all how to get into that first screen,, shit
you're a fucking genius
Sorry but I can't see how anyone thinks this is useful. You can't see what the user is doing wuth their right hand.
They are pressing buttons but you can't see what they are doing. I would really like to see this but I can't. I have tried this on various devices but all are exactly the same.
😢
I really don't want to disrespect someones hard work but you can't see what the person is doing with their right hand
so this is annoyingly useless
