They put Chevy engines in them when the set them up for racing because the original Inline 6 was under powered and they only made 2 V8 Torana one of which is crashed and the other one in a museum.
Yes, those were the days. Top class motorsport with great drivers, great cars and entertaining commentators. Not the sterile 'Supercars' parade we have these days and a commentary that includes at least one "Got the job done" every 10 minutes. Always a Ford fan but you can't take anything away from Brocky, what a talent.
@H HOUR HOTEL fuck you pull out some stupid comments mate! So what Ford was hard up for a dollar hey? Moffat, Johnson to name a few! Even though Dick was a pioneer to start with Ford has/ had plenty of coin when they first got into supercars. You got a problem with Brock and Holden?
H HOUR HOTEL .You are the master of the moronic metaphor. STFU. All of your comments have been carefully researched at the university of abject stupidity where you graduated with distinction.
My first trip to Bathurst. We would leave Melbourne Friday night and arrive very early Saturday morning and and do a couple of laps before setup camp on top of the mountain. Great days. Still going and camp in the chase campground.
2019 and the lap record is down to 2:03. But in all honesty, they are just cars built purely for racing, not road cars re-purposed like Brock drove. I couldn't go into a dealership and buy anything like the cars that race at Bathurst. The only resemblance today is the name...Ford or Holden, and even the Holdens are Chevy. According to Google, a V8 Supercar would cost you about $730,000.00. What did the Torana or Falcon cost? So technically the cars are better, but they have lost the fans that could go and buy the base of what raced.
Yes they built the cars as a rolling chassis at GMH at Dandenong. They had huge amounts of extra spot-welds. No engine or transmission, sound deadening or seats from memory. Built them for the other big teams too.
Thing that sticks in my mind was the total dominance of the A9X that day, many other cars had blown engines and crashed out of the race in the very hot conditions, while all others were struggling just to get around the circuit Brock was killing it , he even set a lap record I think - maybe his final lap?. When most others were failing the A9X package was being pushed harder and harder by Brock and she never flinched once, the ultimate dominator on that day and incredible to watch and hear the performance!!.
My father wore the same suit as Ivan's to his wedding lmao. I so wish we had a solid production cars series. Its sad that we don't even have production cars at all anymore. Australia is not the place I remember.
Yeah, today's cars all look the same, I gave up watching Bathurst years ago. I remember when I moved down to the big smoke Brisbane from the Territory in 84, lived in Thorneside, on race day the street was divided, Ford versus Holden, meat pies copious amounts of beer, couple of the blokes removed the front seats out of their Holdens or Fords and sat right them in front of the tele, profanities and polite words of abuse were exchanged between rival houses through out the day, the looser's went into hiding for the next few days whilst the victors gloated but was all made up very soon over a few cartons after all there was always next years race. That was Australia, we've lost so much of our ridgy didge character.
This is what muscle cars are all about, able to pull its own weight. Go back to natural . These now touring cars are not real . I want to see the new generation carmaros and Mustangs go hard on its own power, brakes , and body. I think most agree. The torana lives as a ledgen coup, Hale Peter Brock, driving that car fast and faster , as we still remember as kids, Peter Brock, you are our hero. Amen.

The idea that so many of the races come down to a few seconds speaks more to the forced homogenaity of the competition than it does the personality of the teams. Like so many other things, the best days were yesterday's.
Mount Panorama and Indianapolis Motor Speedway are alike in many ways, except one of them you can turn on the cruise control and let go of the steering wheel. What a tool.
Actually, if you watch in-car cameras at Indianapolis you would realise that there is far more to it than cruise control. It is a totally different skill than road racing but it is a skill nonetheless.
Not a bad lap in '79. 2:25:00 with no Chase in play. Now they run a 2:07:00 with the Chase. Even with time moving on, Brockies lap is hot as fuck for its day.
Pretty good lap considering it was so dirty off line, he definitely lost a lot of time into the cutting.....Bathurst and Indianapolis are just so similar? Must be all the corners and elevation changes.
At the start, behind the indomitable Evan Green, is that one of the Repco Rally Commodores I see on the start line?? It was a very busy couple of months for PB -- winning the Repco Around Australia followed up shortly after by a Bathurst victory. It was a bit hard for a young Ford supporter to take at the time but both were superlative efforts. The detritus that passes for sedan racing these days in this country just doesn't hold a candle....
In the Group C touring car days, the race cars were for all intents and purposes very much hotted up road cars with a few added extras for safety such as the bolt in roll cages and bladders in the fuel tanks as well as other obvious differences such as slick tyres. But there were a number of the Group C Falcon's, Torana's and Commodore's that were actually converted to road cars after their life on the track. Not to mention that more than a few started their lives as actual road cars before hitting the track (Dick Johnson's 1980 Falcon rock car actually started life as a cop car in Maryborough before Dick bought it at auction earlier that year). Group C and Group A race cars were much closer to their road going versions than Supercars or V8 Supercars or whatever they want to call themselves ever were or will be.
@@3800TURBO the only Supercars race I watch these days is Bathurst. I'm from Adelaide and don't even watch the Adelaide 500. These days I prefer sports car racing.

He clearly had as much as most of the other teams put together. McLaughlin today is properly the equivalent of Brock was then. He always looked so relaxed in a car.
I think they were used to pull hot air out from under the guards, to keep the brakes cool. Brock used them for qualifying in 1979 and they were also fitted to the VC Commodore the following year, in some of the sprint races, from memory. Probably not used in the longer races because it would take longer to do a tyre change in a pitstop
Economaki doing a typical American thing: harping on safety. Or was that to show that the Aussies weren't knuckle draggers? Never mind how spectacular the course is.
I think he wanted to point out the safety aspect of it. Being American means nothing, Bathurst led the way in a lot of innovations in motor racing and safety was a big one.
Funny that a guy known for unvarying perfection, lapping time after time like a machine, stuffed up a corner in a totally, utterly un-Brocklike fashion during his Hero lap. But got pole anyway...
The "Standard" A9X road car came out with the Aussie built M21 4 speed box that would snap the input shaft like a carrot with any engine mods, but the "Bathurst" model had a modified floor pan and a Borg Warner Super T10 4 speed. A little bit more useless trivia is that the earlier L34 had a more powerful engine than the A9X, because they already had the L34 engine homologated for racing, so didn't need to have it fitted to the A9X road cars
