His phrasing in his lead solo is so good you can somehow still hear the chord progression behind it

That somehow is called playing the changes. Needless to say this guy does it well, but that is one of the main goals of learning to improvise well.
Basically what bebop jazz guitarists do. Some jazz standards are so harmonically dense that you have no choice but to play the changes.

@@joro7656 mayer doesn't play that much funk or jazz like tomo but I think tracks like helpless and moving on shows funk inspiration and if you are considering jazz he does that on Im gonna find another you and the intro to neon is jazzy sort of

A perfect example of how, regardless of genre, there's always something to improve, always something you can learn to apply to your own playing. Amazing pick dynamics, great timing and control, also really smooth transitions. Having found your channel recently, I'm very glad I stumbled across this video. There are so many levels that I love about Fujita's delivery from his use of the Strat neck, to his voicings, to the amp use, his very expressive us of dynamic, to the call response, and did I mention the tempo is perfect!

トモさんの演奏を聴くのは、ユーチューブでも教則DVDでもいつでもそうなのですが、甘美な体験です。時間を忘れて聞き惚れてしまいました。
楽器の持つ美しい音色を引き出すために予め存在していたような演奏だとおもいました。
中でもこの演奏は演奏者としても会心の出来ではないのでしょうか。ただただ心地よいです。
このギターはノートラスロッドのデパーゴでしょうか。楽器製作者としては冥利に尽きるのでは。
同時に、自分もプレイヤーではありますが、このような極上の演奏に出会う度にウェス・モンゴメリの言葉を思い出します。
「誰かうまいプレイヤーを聴いて、自分にも簡単にそれができるような気がしてるような人は、実はそのプレイヤーがどれほどの時間をかけてそこまでできるようになったのかを理解していない。」ギターというのは本当に難しい楽器だと実感します。ほんとうに、ピッキングやタッチの一つ一つがそのギタリストが歩んできた鍛錬の歴史を礎にしているのだとおもいます。このようなトモさんのようなプレイには程遠いながらも、私はギターが好きです。おそらく一生をかけトーンを追求してゆくのだとおもいます
本当に素晴らしい演奏をありがとうございました。トモさんの演奏はタッチに温かみや優しさを感じさせてくれるので好きです。

I want to comment on not only the great phrasing and soloing and chord changes, but on the timing, it is just amazing how even in the solo Tomo has really precise control of timing!
Thanks so much for your kind words! 1) Originally my time was not great at all! 2) Practice with a metronome did overcome my problem 3) I have learned that it's so important to be a patient person for something to accomplish.

Just had my first lesson, and it was worth it and more, it wasn't easy it will work you, but oh how much you learn, so much, why waste your money on some local guy, when you can learn from the guy who taught John Mayer. Cost is minimal. Thanks Tomo, I just wish you had been around 20 years ago.
