    You are a wizard! I showed this to my husband. He's an engineer & knows a lot about chemistry. He came over to see if I was ok because of the noise I made when I I saw this pendant. 😂 I told him how you took the Bismuth and melted to make the crystals. He was impressed with the end result of your pendant. Got an "oh wow" from him. High praise from him Daniel! 💗💗

    Hey Daniel. My metallurgist husband says the iridescent sheen is an optical thing, not due to oxides. He says light hits the surface molecules and reflects different wavelengths. When you put the UV resin on top you changed the optical properties, making light hit it differently and that's why the sheen disappeared. I have made faux kyanite crystals and used iridescent pigments to achieve the same effect on their surface, Those color shifting chameleon powders work great! You can use more than one color and apply them randomly over the surface, similar to how you made those faux moonstones. A magenta-blue shift would look lovely!

      I wondered that as flame painting copper has the same problem, stunning colours until you seal it and unsealed it’ll just turn green. Such a shame to lose the beautiful colours like blues and pinks from the heat.
      The structure still looks amazing on your piece Daniel 👏🏼

    Bismuth is the coolest element ever, and you made it into something extra special. Bismuth crystals have always reminded me of some ancient pyramid structures, and the pendant looks like a miniature world. I think you made the right choice with how you hung it. I was gonna suggest grinding a shallow groove around the sphere and add a metal band to it, but this is much less invasive and leaves the beauty of the crystals free to be admired.

    • @daniel..cooper
      @daniel..cooper  9 месяцев назад +1

    • @2degucitas
      @2degucitas 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@daniel..cooper You could pre-make the wire loop that goes around the side seam and put it in place before you put the clear dome on top. It would be held in place by the cured resin.

    Sometimes you can put a holographic nail polish ( ordinary not gel) on and it looks fantastic. Then you topmost it and loose all the holo -ness. All those fantastic colours disappear. This reminded me of that. There are a few different top coats and not all keep that beautiful holo look. Maybe it's the same with resins. I'm sure it must have something to do with light refraction but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

      I asked my son about your issue with the color loss. Naturally he got all technical on me. However the gist of it was that he suspects without knowing all the details,that it was oxidation. He says he’d have to do a little research on it but that was his gut instinct. The resin potentially oxidized the bismuth. I hope that was helpful.

      @@StephanieDwyer-t7y Tell him my metallurgist hubby says it's an optical refraction off the surface molecules. The resin on top changed the way light hits, so no iridescence
