  • With the differences between medical doctors who have MD degrees and those with DO degrees getting fewer and fewer, the most common question I get is: "how is what you do different from a chiropractor?". Well...let's talk about that.

A difference between MD and DO is DO school requires a less GPA to get in. I have a buddy who couldn’t get into medical school with his 3.4 gpa. He did get accepted to two DO schools

How can you tell accurately where a spinal dysfunction is by just using your hands? Most doctors need to use MRI, xray, or some kind of imaging.

Great question Jay! I am looking for different dysfunctions, such as muscle imbalances, tightness, loss of spinal curvature, poor mobility, spasms, etc.. These are all problems best evaluated with a good physical exam rather than any kind of imaging. However, if I suspect something like a disc herniation, degenerative changes, or nerve root impingement, then I could utilize the appropriate imaging modality to evaluate these problems further.

When you perform physical manipulation, what is the actual goal? Is there actually peer reviewed research that backs up any specific benefit? I am asking because I've always heard that there's no scientific evidence that seeing a chiropractor (which is my only experience with manipulation) has any more benefits than a profession massage from an LMT, and that the risks are much higher than a massage because of the stress it puts on your skeleton.

Great question! The extent and quality of research for all forms of manipulation isn't great; however, there are quite a few peer-reviewed studies showing the benefits of osteopathic manipulation (OMT), including spinal manipulation, for all sorts of disorders. There are systematic reviews from the Cochrane database, a review in the New England Journal of Medicine, and a systemic meta-analysis in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders just to name a few from more prominent sources. In terms of studies comparing chiropractic to massage, I am not familiar with any; however, since OMT encompasses the techniques used in both chiropractic and massage, I doubt there would be any use in doing comparative studies between them. As far as choosing massage or chiropractic, it is probably best to pick whichever provides you relief AND you're comfortable with. Either way, I would recommend seeing a physician if you have long-term pain. The advantage of seeing a D.O. who does manipulation is that you can be evaluated by a physician who can also do the same techniques as a chiropractor and/or massage therapist.
