      Keep Productive Reading physical books for me takes the price which I can also do when using public transport. But when I’m driving I prefer Audible or podcasts.
      However, if I had to choose one it be physical books

      Audible. I find it hard to find either the time or the calm to sit down and read. However audible I can listen to a book when I work out or drive my car etc. I’ve got over 100 books so far in it.

    Thank you for comparison. I would say the Blinklist is good for books when you aren't sure if you should read it or not ..you can get some overview and decide according to that ... and I still have problem with audiobooks cuz I dont know if I can count it as "read" if I just listen to that haha .,. anyone is the same?:)

    • @notadumbassliberal6950
      @notadumbassliberal6950 4 года назад +5

      According to science you absorb the information equally as well though listening. So unless your getting a trophy for "reading" the book, I wouldn't worry about it.

    • @user936
      @user936 4 года назад

      If you have trouble sitting down distracted to read I think audible is a good alternative. Problem is I keep picking detail-heavy books and re-listening to parts...probably would be better with a kindle version! I'm terrible at reading and likely on the dyslexic scale.
      I am considering picking a book in both audible and electronic format then read/listening simultaneously to see if I can retain more information "reading it twice". I realise this is a costly prospect going forward if I think it was a successful endeavour but the idea is to spend money but save time.

    • @ktee6370
      @ktee6370 4 года назад +3

      Yes, and I tend to absorb and be able to think through information better if I get it visually. I have blinkist, so where necessary, I go to the "text" page to read it. I wouldn't say that I had "read" the book, but that I'd got a good summary of it. I always fall asleep when listening to full audiobooks so I never get through any. Certainly I'd be happier to read a printed-out book.
      (I also have Scribd, I like it because I can read the books on screens, but I found its app difficult to use and don't like the UI on its website for ebooks.)

    • @user936
      @user936 4 года назад +2

      @@ktee6370 if I listen to audible books I make a point of doing it when I'm quite awake or doing something requiring me to be awake but with not an awful lot of mental stimulus most of the time. Like motorway driving. I can always pause it using the steering wheel controls should the situation around me change.
      Although if you have a habit of nodding off during them that probably shouldn't be a recommendation on my part :D

    • @ktee6370
      @ktee6370 4 года назад +1

      That is true, it'd be dangerous. Luckily I don't drive 😄
      I'm doing research on the field of literary studies, so I tend to mull over texts and words, expressions and sentences. Reading consists of a lot of re-reading, and that includes flipping to previous chapters and passages to ascertain the relevance of what is currently being read.
      That is probably why my brain turns off when I'm listening to audiobooks: My mind is aware that it isn't possible to rewind the file a gazillion times, so it probably just chooses not to engage.
      Thus the falling asleep.
      But when insomnia hits, I have a tried-and-tested antedote 😂

  • @mereiriz

    I love the idea of audiobooks; being able to do other things while “reading” at the same time. Sadly, it doesn’t work for me. I’ve listened to a couple of books on Audible but at the end of it I don’t remember absolutely anything. What I actually read stays with me way better. So, it doesn’t matter to me if at the end of the year instead of 50 books I read only 25. At least I remember those. :)

    Blinkist offers a free book to listen to for 24 hours everyday no sub required. I use it to see what a Book is like if it’s seems really good then I end up buying a physical copy because I like to take notes so I’m not just listening but applying and practicing what I read.

    I was listening to Read To Lead Podcast to help direct my library so that I wasn't randomly buying books that I might be disappointed in, but then found Blinkist. I use Blinkist to go through the Blinks. If I find the blinks lacking in any way and want to dive deeper into the book, then I will purchase on Audible (or use a credit). If I really enjoy the Audible version, I will purchase the physical book so that I have the ability to write in the margins, give to subordinates/colleagues, and keep for posterity to evaluate how my notes and thoughts on the subject have changed or evolved. Now that I am getting into Zettelkasten, maybe Blinkist and Audible will suffice... TBD.

    Audible is great for reading non-fiction books, reading physical or digital books is great for fiction or short reads. I've tried Blinkist but it didn't fit me and how I read.
    I'm a serial note-taker, and I often put write things in the margins or nooks and crannies of books (marginalia), or highlight stuff in Kindle/iBooks. Reading non-fiction books really puts me into overdrive on note-taking, and most of the time I spend more time getting off track on certain things being mentioned in the books rather than focusing on finishing the actual reading. On one hand, this may be very useful time for thinking, but on the other sometimes it's just make me overthink or over-analyze sections, which then gets resolved by reading the next chapters of the book. Listening to non-fiction really allows me to make space in my mind to think and visualize, while not get bogged down writing or noting stuff. Plus, it's great for your walks or commute, truly handy. (In the same way this is why I like listening to non-fiction podcasts as well.)
    For fiction books, nothing beats (for me) the suspense of reading it with your eyes. You can pace yourself, you can allow yourself to ruminate with certain passages, and it demands your full attention. Reading fiction is also easier for me than reading non-fiction, so I guess I can make time to read a good book in a day or two. Lately I've been very busy day-to-day, but I've allowed myself to read at least 30 mins of fiction everyday.
    Blinkist is good when you're trying to evaluate reading something, or even summarizing what you've read. While its summaries may be really good and even entertaining, I feel there's a lot you're missing if you don't get on with the book.
    Audible is also quite cheap, but of course if you want to build a physical library you won't be able to do that with a digital subscription. I've lost many of my books two years ago due to termites, and that experience really taught me how to divorce myself from physical books, and really just focus on what's in them. That said, it'd be actually more expensive to buy a physical book a month than get one from audible. Except of course if you frequent second-hand and thrift bookshops, where you can get a lot for cheap. (Though I usually read it in the shop, if I can!)

    I have not tried Blinkist but don't think I'd like the condensed format. I LOVE Audible and have been listening to it for past couple of years. I spend a lot of time commuting in my car and Audible is perfect for that. I mix it up between non-fiction and fiction books and really find it to be a good value. I do also spend a good amount of time reading paper books as well as I enjoy it, and also to keep my professional skills up to speed. Some of the education books I read are not available on Audible so paper is the only way to go, but I do also enjoy spending some downtime with a good paper book as often as I'm able to.

    In my experience, the book being read by the author is very hit or miss, and usually miss. Authors are good at writing, not necessarily voice acting. Stephen King is my favorite example of this. He's an engaging and prolific writer, but man does he stink when it comes to trying to read his own material!
