I'm just recovering from a hard faint - a channel is covering Chris Rea! I'm a big Elton fan but Chris runs him very very close.
No one captures the heat shimmer of the beach quite like him. If you listen to this one you should really combine it with the next two on the album as they tell a kind of story of heat, dust, sweat and trembling lust.
Follow ups? Auberge, Looking For the Summer, Windy Town, Curse Of the Traveller. So many great songs, sadly so few hits.

You guys would love his extraordinary guitar/slide guitar work on 'Warm and Tender Love" and 50 others and his impeccable pop on Diamonds, and 20 others. It was the MTV video of the time. The images captured the beach atmosphere wonderfully, evoking an endless summer day of blue green water and a bluer than blue sky. The lady? Entrancing. Chris set the mood, playing his solo acoustic guitar and singing with wistful remembrance of, it turns out, his own past. A favorite song and video of mine, then and now.

Chris did play "Road to Hell" on Letterman, but he is generally unknown here in the USA. He's huge in the UK and eastern Europe. Careful with Chris, he does have multiple versions of his hit songs and you picked the down tempo version. The official video version is much tighter. The other song that fits this theme and is equally if not more catchy and evocative is "Looking For The Summer".

I bought a package he put out of 11 albums, each album a different taste of blues, for example, one was Texas Blues, another, Chicago Blues. To release 11 albums at once, incredible.

This version is different to the much more well known single version of the song. It's got a real iconic higher pitched guitar riff to it.

Agreed. That would've been the better version to react to.

He comes from Middlesbrough, same as David Coverdale Whitesnake, Paul Rodgers Free... They were breathing in petro-chemical fumes, and smoke from the steelworks from birth which explains their gruff voices 😉

My favorite Chris Rea is Fool (if you think it's over) from 1978. Do give it a listen.
