Trying out some new in-car cameras and still have to dial in the settings. Thanks for bearing with me as I figure these out. Really great improvements here with Mach-E and I’m looking forward to testing out Blue Cruise 1.2 for upcoming videos. The extreme power limitations are crazy though and really take this out of a performance car category for me. Thanks for watching!
We’ve owned our Mach e for over 2 years and have over 48,000 miles on the odometer. It’s become our preferred vehicle. Our model 3 which was purchased before the Mach e has just 23,000 miles on it. Both EV’s have been equally reliable and the only maintenance on either has been a tire rotation costing twenty bucks each.
7 mth mache gtpe owner here. Very accurate assessment. Glad you've bounced back to mache. The ota updates are lackluster with very little details on each update. Ford cuts power starting at the 50 mph mark so way sooner than 5 seconds. It's faster to 50 mph than MYP. But falls off the cliff at the 5 second mark and makes you feel you're driving a 3rd rate vehicle for an added cost. The psychology is tough to handle.
Performance vs Normal GT definitely is down to personal taste. I do agree most would prefer a Performance ride quality, but I feel safer and enjoy the normal GT more since I can feel the road better and I feel it gives better raw feedback. GT like a more raw experience vs a performance is more a luxury experience. I definitely appreciate your point of view.
Battery Preconditioning - Navigate to a DC charger within 18 mi and you'll see the HVB Coolant Inlet temp rise to 20ºC+ and hear the pump running behind the dash if it's heating. I don't think it was heating in your case because the battery was already warm enough (15ºC) for a low power DC charger. If you set it to a high power DC station it tries to go up to 25ºC.
Still loving my 2022 select! It's a mom car... doesn't need to be fancy. Biggest improvement for me has been mileage shown on the dash. It never used to get close to 247 but now when 100% charged, it is giving me 250!
I think the "grabbing" you feel when stopping with 1-pedal is the "Auto hold" feature which will hold your car still after stopping without needing the brake. If you turn it off, you will not feel it.
I have yet to see such limitations on my 2022 GT Performance and I just had an "issue" with an Audi SUV; it tried to catch me so it could cut me off. I got up to over 114 on a near flat road for over a mile and he could not catch up. It soon slowed and got off at an exit and I slowed down due to traffic. I saw maybe a 20% cut back on power until I got down below 50 near my exit. The only time I saw a 50% drop was when I was 3 miles from a charger and my range dropped below 20 miles. I was still able to maintain 55-60 and below up to the charger at 17 miles left, but I could tell the top end power was gone. The one thing I saw in an earlier run/incident is that if I took my foot off the pedal the car seemed to get the power back and I got as strong a surge of power as I did when I started. This could be because of all the updates as back in late 2022 the power cutoff seemed to happen at 80 and the car would not recover as quickly as it does now. FYI - My winter range at 100% seemed to have increased with the last 2 updates: a minimum of 235-245 now versus as low as 185 before (5 degrees F, 210 at freezing). Above 50 degrees F the range is closer to what I had when I picked the car up in August, 259-269 and one time at 271 miles.
Why don’t you see Mach-E GTs? Here in the U.K. I can tell you why I’ve never seen one because they start at 74,500 GBP ($89,300 USD) that’s Porsche Taycan pricing (75,500 GBP) I love the Mach-E but for that amount of money I know what I’d spend my cash on. Love your channel.
The "L" on the shifter is ~50% regen of the one pedal driving regen. It's almost exactly the same level as the regen when in "unbridled" and NOT in one pedal driving
Totally agree with your evaluation of Ford’s software/owner communication, dealing with them on my Lighting like pulling teeth. Hopefully they figure it out soon.
Thanks for coming back to the Mach E, Kyle. I’ve had my E4X for almost a year now, and love it a lot. But admittedly, it was the car I could find at MSRP at the time. Still love it despite the flaws, but I really wish Ford would make Mach E owners whole as far as the HVJB is concerned. Feels like a hanging knife we’ll all have to deal with sooner or later. Anyway, appreciate the content 👍
Great review Kyle! I'm in Golden, CO and have a regular GT and love it but agree with most of your points. I've found that the fast charging speed is dramatically reduced when you have cabin heat running at the same time. Not sure if you tested it both ways, but when I've turned off the heater speeds seem to improve!
We have the Select AWD. Agree totally with your dismay over lack of info given to driver; we use OBD2 reader and app as well. Cannot precondition battery w/o L2 home charger as far as I can tell. Car wants external energy for that purpose. Once battery up to 80-85°F, charge curve pretty flat to 80%. But low voltage battery takes lots of Amps; don't let anyone shame you off the 350kW dispensers.
@TechnicalLee That capability has not been listed as part of any update we have received; I will test again but I think not all versions of the car get the same features.
@Rowan Anderson Yes, this does work now. Thanks to all for the info. Curiously, it took 18 min. for battery heater to shut off from 50°F. Wonder how they chose the 18 mile limit.
I would have loved Magneride on my 2022 GT, but I *didn't* want the extra bolstering or summer tires, and I like the flower petal wheels, so I was more than happy to save the thousands. Thanks for these videos, Kyle!
Great video Kyle. Kia EV6 GT does more w 77kW pack than Ford does with 90kW pack. It's a shame w Ford's GT badge. Hope they can get around 5sec limitation, that's really only missing piece in an otherwise great car. EV6 GT needs 90kWh battery and Mach-E needs EV6 GT motors :)
For all the Mach-E performance nerds, I did give it my best to fry the contactors but back road abuse is nowhere near what this would see on a track. Oh well, next time! ⚡️ 🔥
If you want to make a high performance EV, you have to make a high performance pack. See Randy Pobst run up Pikes Peak in a Plaid. That said, in city traffic, this thing probably does great. Get off the light quick, looks cute, and has room for groceries.
@@anthonyc8499 that’s part of it… The whole battery isn’t set up to deliver the current those motors can request. There’s not enough cooling and sensors, it’s underspec’d for proper shredding. Fun car other than canyon runs and track use, I must say.
Love mine, but I'm glad I got the performance edition. The seats, wheels, and magnaride were sooo worth a few thousand more. My guess on the power throttling despite normal looking battery temps is that the limitation isn't the cells, but the high voltage battery junction box. They had to redesign that part because the original failed due to overheating and welding of contactors on a lot of 2021 and 2022 GT models and required replacement, mine included. They are probably limiting the power around that bottleneck, not the cells thermals. Edit: Just watched to the end and you nailed it too.
Kyle, what was the app that your were using to see all the nerdy data? BTW, I have/chose the 2022 regular MME GT version. Man I love that car. I could have easily paid the extra $4k, but chose not to. I did this for 3 reasons. 1) I like the regular GT interior better with the copper stitching, and I see that comment fairly regularly. Not a fan of the shoulder bolster on the GTPE, but if you are big canyon carver like you are, then I can see that might actually be a plus. I like to corner carve, but like my seats better. 2) I'm going to toss the suspension because in BOTH GT versions it is not where it needs to be. Obviously more bouncy in reg-GT, but still problems w/Magnaride. I have already purchased the $3k KW coilover kit for the MME. 3) The GTPE wheels look nice, but are a pain to clean, and I really like these almost solid black wheels on my Dark Matter Gray GT (plastic inserts and all). 😎
I like Ford, but their refusal to provide anything but the most limited settings really keeps me from considering them. An example of this is "Smartlok" and your choice of on or off. Off is full manual locks, on is only slightly better. For a service truck, I frequently leave the vehicle running when I stop, but Smartlok won't unlock all the doors unless you turn off the vehicle. I get it, maybe in South Chicago or North Birmingham I'd want those locks, locked all the time. However when I'm in the rural areas I want it to unlock when I put the vehicle in Park. Chevrolet has no problem with that and gives me a ton of options. Ford, C'est la vie.
I suspect that the Ford's heat issue is in the motor or inverter, rather than the battery. Having seen the inverter, it's more likely in the motor itself. Low volts = big amps = big heat.
Kyle, Did you speak to the ford engineers about the power limitations you experienced on your canyon drive? I wonder how these power limitations would manifest driving up I-70 from Golden to the Eisenhower Tunnel? I have to believe the car would be able to make it and stay with normal ICE cars. We’re off to the dealer to test drive a GT tomorrow. Did a test fit in front and back seats today for our 90 year old mom, as we are her chauffeur for appointments etc. it’s nice to see you mentioning all the incremental upgrades that have been made since your first reviews. The MME may be our first pure electric car, driving a 2010 hybrid RX450 at the moment.
A friend in CA bought from a dealer a 2022 GTPE with only 3000mi for $62,500 a month ago. That's the sweet spot in deals right now, you can get a GTPE essentially new for the price of a 23 GT.
2 years down and very happy with the MME FE AWD ER, dont see the point of GT with such limitations, Ford needs to do better adding a GT nameplate needs to count for something, magna ride difference was noticeable but not enough for GT nameplate
I feel like the one pedal braking make sense. You use less friction brakes would you let the regen slow it down most of the way. When I use one pedal braking in other EVs (Bolt, I-Pace), I don't remove my foot completely. I modulate the pressure depending on my speed and the flow of traffic, with the intent of never coming to a complete stop if possible. As good as regen is, it will never be as efficient as maintaining a moderate speed. For me, the smoothness of the car coming to a complete stop when i remove my foot from the pedal is more of a corner case that I don't care about.
Might be able to shed a little light on the "Unbridled" question. My understanding of the change is that several users pointed out that "Unbridled" is an adjective while the other two modes are verbs. Switching to "Unbridle" puts all three driving modes as verbs. Simply put, I think the grammer police got them!
Why? Maybe because dealers are greatly marking up the performance (even more than non-GT). Only 5K more. I wish. Until dealer stop milking it's customers it is hard to get most EV's.
@@EVandMe there’s always been a good spread of Mustang trims & options but it’d be good if Ford trimmed down the Mustang Mach-E lineup. They got a start already by making the CART1 awd. I think there’s a place for the base GT but maybe it should be called the LX.
I can’t see the point in the GT if it constantly limits the power. Is this the same suspension in the AWD Premium? Maybe the wider tyres make it feel better handling because them 225 55 19 on the Premium seam very narrow. I get my AWD Premium this week and I’m getting them wheels off straight away and getting some 245 45 20” on. Well you answered my question at the end great videos really enjoying your channel.
The most annoying thing with my Mach-E is Ford's Software Updates in Europe. US is getting 4.2.2, and most people in Europe are stuck at 2.7.4 (at least from MY2021). My car is now nearly 1,5 years old and the frunk button on the key still does not work. It is a little bit frustrating.
After owning a Tesla, I could never own a Mach-E, problems with power delivery, inconsistent regen braking, questionable stability control, slow charging and problematic over the air updates that are few and far between, and when you do get an update it's to only fix problems with the vehicle. Totally different user experience from the Ford, I'd be so disappointed if I owned a Mach-E but then someone let me borrow their Tesla. Ford has lots of work to do just to approach a 5 year old Tesla.
In the intro, the lights keep flashing and the mirrors folding in/out. Is that some feature that is unlocking the car each time you stand close, and locking it when you step further away? The best feature that would quickly become very annoying, if you are doing something in the garage with the key in your pocket!
Imagine paying to get a GT and after a few seconds you are accelerating like a Nissan Leaf. And it's in the middle of winter with snow on the ground. What's gonna happen when you do this on an 80 degree or warmer summer day? No thanks.
The EQS 580 never throttles the power unless you are below 40 SOC. On the other hand, the AMG does. That's why it's not much faster at the 1/4 mile. That's a BS gimmick no matter who does it.
It’s not turtle mode, it’s tortoise mode. Turtles are fast! Have you ever tried to catch one, I have. It’ll always out swim you. My neighbours daughter has a tortoise and is very slow. 😂
2 months ago I bought a 2021 Mach E, after an upgrade from the dealer and the latest OTA updates, I can't get more than 20 minutes of charge from a Level 2 charger. After 20 minutes, I have to go unplug, replug, wait 20 minutes, unplug, replug. Absolute crap. I called the dealer again and the appointment is in 10 days! Imagine not being able to put gas in your car and having to wait a week and a half????? So disappointed in Ford and the Mach E
I didn't spend the extra because of A.) Ford dealerships are a$$h0les with the markups and B.) the GT was frankly top of my budget... maybe the next one when I replace it in a few years if I stay with the MME. Frankly I think it might be a Silverado EV or a Lightning for the next vehicle but we shall see.... I have to say though, your original charging at 30kw, something is wrong there... even when my battery is cold, I see WAY above that as far as charging speed. Mine is a '22 model year, not sure if that really will make a difference though. I see around 40kw until well into the 90% now. I would LOVE to know how to get on the beta for blue cruise... I heard the 23's have lane change on them as well as blue cruise pin balls in the lane which I heard there's a firmware update that fixes that but when I took it to the dealership they said I'm completely up to date. With one pedal driving it's so hit or miss... I always use it but sometimes I find I have to hit the brakes and other times you don't. You mentioned the L function... be wary.... if you have it in L, Apple Maps gets REALLY wonky and the car cannot identify the GPS location. One thing you didn't mention in the video is the rear wiper... it's too small, one of the things I did recently was put a larger wiper blade on it which helped A LOT! A/C vibrations don't happen BUT It's freaking LOUD.... like we've taken it in a few times to the dealership because we were worried about something being broken. The 5 second full power is beyond annoying, I've also found it to be much less when driving freeway speeds. One thing to try is there's an Unbridled Extend which really helps with that power cut... you don't get full power all the time but its not nearly as noticeable if you're trying to do repeat sessions. (again it's not as fast though) I thought it was called Unbridled as well and until this video that's what I thought it was called but now I'll have to check tomorrow.
90% of people don’t buy GT is because they don’t need it. They buy an EV for as commuter car running errands at least I did. I got the premium rwd standard range. I love it. As far as performance the GT is not worth the extra money period. It’s not a canyon car it’s just not. As a true enthusiast that wants have a experience when you drive meaning you are driving the car shifting the gears your driving the car no the other around. Every EV is numb no feeling at all. Example of a true enthusiast car I drive my GT 350. He’s driving hard canyon driving that’s hilarious 😂. EV track session that’s laughable 😂. He trying so hard to sell a computer with wheels are fun in the canyons.
5 second rule should only be for food on the ground not a car lol.. i love my mme gt but yes that sucks especially when you're on the highway and someone wants to race you and you can't get full power because your already at 70mph and limited just by driving..
Full throttle for a few seconds and it stops accelerating? Cruising at full throttle? Are you kidding? My 2022 Model 3LR would be approaching escape velocity. Tell the truth, you were in an MG Midget.
Ford has been making automobiles for over 100 years, as far as I'm concerned, they should be the gold standard to which the "new guys" aspire, not the other way around. BTW, I have owned Fords for decades, but they just seem to be trying to rest on their laurels instead of competing.
I work at a used car dealership and we recently had a Mach-E come through. I've owned EV's for a few years now, but figuring out things in this vehicle were so difficult. It's so counterintuitive. I couldn't get it to charge. I plugged it in and there was nowhere to set the charge limit. I figured out you had to set some sort of location but it never started charging. And it was one of the cheapest feeling interiors which was disappointing.

Kyle, could the power be limited due to the motors getting hot?. It's not the battery getting hot. Should be able to see that with the OBD readout.
You can view the software version on the car if you dig deeper into the menu. It’s under Settings I believe
It only shows for a short time (like a few days) after an update applied. Then it clears out and just says "up to date"
That only shows the SYNC software version, which is only 1 module of 40+ in the Mach-E.

I'm salivating waiting for the EV6 GT video.
A friend in CA bought from a dealer a 2022 GTPE with only 3000mi for $62,500 a month ago. That's the sweet spot in deals right now, you can get a GTPE essentially new for the price of a 23 GT.
I like sitting high in the Model Y Performance. It gives me the SUV feel. While not being a large SUV.
2 years down and very happy with the MME FE AWD ER, dont see the point of GT with such limitations, Ford needs to do better adding a GT nameplate needs to count for something, magna ride difference was noticeable but not enough for GT nameplate
What do you mean by "power boost?" Is that a launch mode?
This is why so many people are buying the Model 3 Performance. Or just the Model 3.
and the headache of dealing with a Ford dealership that is a big turn-off
This competes with Model Y.
Well, what about all of the Headaches dealing with the Tesla dealership? Oh wait, there are no Tesla dealerships ha ha.
I found the suspension very weird, too soft and accordion like...
The 5 second thing eliminates it as a serious performance EV. Suspect that most buyers aren’t aware of this until after they buy.
Looking forward to the Mach-e Shelby.
apparently, people at Ford don't know that car performance is mostly measured in quarter miles runs.
Awesome accurate oos review! You’re making me love my Tesla more😂
Why? Maybe because dealers are greatly marking up the performance (even more than non-GT). Only 5K more. I wish. Until dealer stop milking it's customers it is hard to get most EV's.
The GT basic is a just a premium with larger front motor. This trim and the CA RT1 shouldn't exist
They should have called the basic GT the LX.
@@anthonyc8499 The offering should be Select (standard range) Premium (extended range) and GT-PE - having the Basic GT, and CA RT1 is too many models
Considering replacing my polestar 2 for a Mach e gt performance. Do you think the Mach e is a better vehicle?
i have the non performance gt and it does jus fine for me jus wish it had a lil better efficiency but the extra $8k ish wasnt worth it for me
The most annoying thing with my Mach-E is Ford's Software Updates in Europe. US is getting 4.2.2, and most people in Europe are stuck at 2.7.4 (at least from MY2021). My car is now nearly 1,5 years old and the frunk button on the key still does not work. It is a little bit frustrating.
If i only drive 10-15 miles a day is it better to fully charge every day, Only charge to full every couple weeks, or charge every day to 10%-20%?
Ford needs to make a red interior option. Sometimes I wish the interior was more aggressive like the normal mustang.
What software/app and OBD reader are you using here?
Great video! Whatever you do don’t let Jordan drive that thing 😂😂
If you still have the car, can you do a video about the Apple Maps EV route planner, which is currently only supported by Mustang Mach-E?
After owning a Tesla, I could never own a Mach-E, problems with power delivery, inconsistent regen braking, questionable stability control, slow charging and problematic over the air updates that are few and far between, and when you do get an update it's to only fix problems with the vehicle. Totally different user experience from the Ford, I'd be so disappointed if I owned a Mach-E but then someone let me borrow their Tesla. Ford has lots of work to do just to approach a 5 year old Tesla.
So the 2023 software can’t be used by older versions? Just curious
Isn't "unbridled extended" kind of redundant? Perhaps they need to rename those modes.
In the intro, the lights keep flashing and the mirrors folding in/out. Is that some feature that is unlocking the car each time you stand close, and locking it when you step further away? The best feature that would quickly become very annoying, if you are doing something in the garage with the key in your pocket!
Now I have seen this exact behavior in other cars that you have posted reviews on. Hmm, the new norm?
What brand is the camera you have on the driver window?
So much smoother annoyances
Could you re-test the DC fast charging on the ID. 4 with the SK battery if possible? Thanks Kyle, awesome channel(s)!
Yes!
Are batteries ever going to get better?
Imagine paying to get a GT and after a few seconds you are accelerating like a Nissan Leaf. And it's in the middle of winter with snow on the ground. What's gonna happen when you do this on an 80 degree or warmer summer day? No thanks.
Pretty sure "battery inlet temperature" is coolant loop temperature at the battery inlet, not charge port temperature.
It's the temperature in the hose right before entering the pack. If there's no heating/cooling active it will drift towards ambient temp.
The EQS 580 never throttles the power unless you are below 40 SOC. On the other hand, the AMG does. That's why it's not much faster at the 1/4 mile. That's a BS gimmick no matter who does it.
The accurate truth is why I followed years ago. Good product for a fun drive between/before/after a commute. 43:08
Nice .. have try Mustang eletrice here in Norway. I like the handling... But is not as Tesla for me i like Model S best.
It’s not turtle mode, it’s tortoise mode. Turtles are fast! Have you ever tried to catch one, I have. It’ll always out swim you. My neighbours daughter has a tortoise and is very slow. 😂
Amazingly, most of the cars reviewed on here aren't big hits on CR's yearly April review!
(again it's not as fast though)
I thought it was called Unbridled as well and until this video that's what I thought it was called but now I'll have to check tomorrow.
Waiting till they add these features before i buy one for my wife. Chicago dealers and sales people seem to really be down on Ford EV's?
Really disappointing that Ford put a Mustang and GT badge on something with so many limitations in sustained power output.
What’s the apps name I need that also thanks !!
Does a model 3 use friction brakes during high regen?
You said V+A=KW, I think you meant to say V*A=KW.
Full throttle for a few seconds and it stops accelerating? Cruising at full throttle? Are you kidding? My 2022 Model 3LR would be approaching escape velocity. Tell the truth, you were in an MG Midget.
In Texas, they don't have a premium GT
Does not sound very "Mustang GT" like to me. With or without the "Performance pack".
Ford has been making automobiles for over 100 years, as far as I'm concerned, they should be the gold standard to which the "new guys" aspire, not the other way around. BTW, I have owned Fords for decades, but they just seem to be trying to rest on their laurels instead of competing.
Does anyone know what OBD2 reader he is using? Love to have one myself.
OBDLink MX+
Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app
So a performance model Mustang Mach E that limits performance... for 70k i'll look elsewhere.
You see less of the performance ones because of availability.
