My experience with the Pimax as similar, but the 60hz is not the only downside it also have no depth, you can look around but not move you head closer, leaning ect ect. Can cause nausia in some VR games i tried.
Only the rotational movement, no 6DoF? That's a shame, a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I could combine the 3 point LED model I cobbled together for flight sims to get the leaning in as well. I have to do some research.
I'm amazed by how far we've come in 5 years. The fact the quest 2 beats all these headsets while being a mobile headset is just incredible. Looking forward to what 2027 has to offer for VR now!
@the dark bun are you being serious? The half life series is always been about innovation game mechanics, so vr is a logical step to take in order to achieve this
Phillip! I want to say i loved this review! It's something different that appeals to me as i own a vive. I also own a pimax because i wanted to check out the 4k. I do want to tell you though, compared to "real vr" like oculus and vive pimax does not even compare! The oculus and vive have roomscale tracking which means you can move your head not just 360 degrees but you can move in, move out, take a few steps over to the side, it doesn't sound like much but that completes the whole experience! I highly suggest you go out and demo oculus vive, or even playstation vr just to see the in and out tracking (even though the playstation vr tracking is terrible). I also wanted to say that the screen on the pimax is, good in certain areas, like the screen door effect which is good but compared to any other major vr headset it's very lacking. These were just my thoughts and It seemed like you liked vr and i highly suggest you go check out real vr at like bestbuy or the microsoft store or something because in all honosty the pimax feels like a VERY cheap knock off with %25 of the actual features of real headsets. I also want to say, for not having a headset to compare the pimax to, you reviwed this like REALLY well.
i don't know about that. pretty soon, all you'll need for that is your phone. new android devices are all going to ship with gearvr grade vr-compatible motion tracking, so all you'll need for steam VR is a viable wireless connection to a pc, which is also coming with the new 10gbps wifi spec, and a middleware like riftcat, which is already available and works with any gyro-equipped phone (though it kinda sucks because the sensors are laggy in current phones). so in a couple of years at worst, you won't actually have to buy almost anything to experience entry-level vr.
Exactly...people are spending a shitload of money on products that are still at an infancy level with no major titles to play on....I say why rush it...enjoy your ps4/xbox/pc games without vr for now and instead of paying a shitload of money for a test-like head-set use the money to buy a better pc/screen/graphics card....VR can wait...enjoy the technologies we have mastered at their prime and in a couple of years when the newer versions of the headsets are released with hundreds of complete compatible games and much more affordable consumer-level prices, then you can buy them and enjoy the new-age of gaming. But for the time being, VR is not worth the trouble.
Zero Budget Noob Hundreds of complete compatible games? Who will make them if you're putting people off VR? There will be no newer versions of headsets and VR is dead in the water if no one takes a chance on the tech, provided they have the means, of course.
Only question I got is if it will work in 3 months, would be cool if you could make a new video about it in some time, just to update us about how it "ages" :)
Gearbest is an awful site. Google their reputation if you don't believe me. You will probably get what you ordered, but any support beyond that is impossible. When I tried to return a DOA tablet, they wanted me to ship it to a warehouse in China before they sent out a replacement, and when I told shipping would cost me 130$ they basically said that's my problem, not theirs. Any return/replacement polices they have are pretty much a scam, and when you're ordering cheap Chinese brands that's not something you want.
Weird, my experience is the opposite, I once made a mistake within my delivery address, but with some pushing and pulling I got it fully refunded (minus shipping costs), which they didn't have to, as their terms and conditions states that they don't have to do anything if you, the customer make a stupid mistake as filling in the form wrong... though, the product I ordered was about 40 dollars, so not that expensive. If gearbest is still a no go, I would also recommend banggood. When the product I ordered there broke, I got a new one and I didn't have to ship back the faulty product (shipping costs where to high for that, which according to their policy they would have to pay if their product is faulty). I only had to pay the shipping costs for the new product, which isn't much, if you live in The Netherlands. Maybe I just got lucky ;)
But he hasnt even tried the vive. The vive is the best experience you can have on vr. this doesnt even have room scale or controllers it seems. I'd struggle to call it VR at all.
so have i. it was honestly a let down. the little will to buy it i had before faded completely. i'll look into it again when it hits $300 and there's actually more than just minigames on the market.
I first saw the video about a week ago, spent most of the time since trying to come up with a good pun for the comments to challenge you with. Needless to say it was crap.
60hz is a killer. 90hz is the bare minimum to do what PSVR, Oculus and Vive are doing. Basically this is a completely different kind of product from the main three VR headsets.
not having basestations, controllers and the worse refresh rate makes the price seem a bit overpriced... if you take the 700€ of the vive and then remove 240€ for the basestations and 200€ for the controllers (in store prices -150€ because they probably don't cost that much too make) you get about 260 € for the headset... now lets compare that to 300£ and you see wich one of them really is cheaper... (yes it does have a higher resolution display but that is balanced out by the lower framerate)
I've tried all three, the Vive, the Oculus, and recently the Pimax 4k. A friend who makes games for VR got one and let me try it. It's a pretty crazy coincidence that almost right after I try it you review it, but I was pretty disappointed. What killed it was the 60Hz. The Vive and Oculus have 90Hz. I can deal with sitting only, but the 60Hz feels choppy and nauseating compared to the Vive or Oculus. For someone who hasn't ever used VR before it might be ok, but coming from the other two is a definite and obvious downgrade. The tracking also gets a bit choppy sometimes.
I was like, "how the f everyone on yt is a sound expert and knows to determine highs, mids and lows, while im yet to understand what they are" and then you got me. LOL, I love your humor.
how is it for stationary stuff? like elite dangerous or DCS world? stuff that doesn't need special controllers or weird movement. also now i want icecream, god damn it philip.
Here is a tip : If you cross your eyes the right amount during the vr footage, you will get double vision. Adjust how crossed your eyes are until the left video overlaps with the right video. Now you can see in 3d.
Great video. Really helpful and enjoyable to watch. Despite it being a relatively long video. Your style of filming and humour keeps me watching. The set certainly does appear to bring VR to more people with its price. I assume that it doesn't register forward and back head movement (zoom)
Thank you very much for your review. I've been searching for a headset that would work for my needs in viewing 360º live streaming video from a set of mini BlackMagic cameras shooting 4k at 60fps. I plan to send a ROV fitted with a high end 360º camera system to explore the ocean animals under the mini sailing cruise ships. I didn't need any head tracking systems like in the Vive or Sony products. I just wanted to bring the diving experience to people who for one reason or another are unable to dive in cold Alaskan waters.
well ... on a rewatch ... I assume the "buzzing" is probably the resistor. It happens with every chinese appliance. I "think" it's to save on materials, as you build just one circuit and change the resistance for the desired effect.
Excellent review. It's interesting to see how decent this device compares to mainstream counterparts. Although at the time of leaving this comment, the Rift doesn't cost much more, but still it's nice to see cheaper alternatives. $800 for the Vive was too much for me to consider it seriously, but in the $400 range I'm much more likely to take the plunge (and I have).
framerate depends on your video card. The only downside as mentioned in the video is that the Pimax has 60hz refresh rate, compared to 90 on the HTC Vibe and Oculus Rift
I think the Pimax 4K is pointless, I mean the Google Cardboard can do everything this thing can do for cheaper and you can use special software on your PC to connect your phone to your PC and use the cardboard to play PC VR games.
I think the bandwidth would be a lot less, and screen latency would be even higher (nausea). Also, you'd need a super high end phone with at least a 4K screen (do they even exist?) to not get screen-door effect. I've used a cardboard, and the FOV on it is laughable.
Coming from someone that has tested most of the consumer headsets I’d say mobile VR sucks. No positional tracking, No 6of controllers. However using a larger phone e.g iPhone 8 Plus would give you a much larger FOV. Depends on your lenses (Fresnel or Bipolar) focal length and IPD. However for cardboard headsets you only get a limited selection (Google, Chinese Wholesaler and those binoculars you pulled apart)
What you were saying about the nausea, apparently it's more likely to happen if you're very resistant to "travel sickness". Something about your body telling your brain that you're moving vs your brain telling your body that you're moving. I experienced it while trying out HL2 in VR on a rift DK2, since I always got nauseous about halfway through a level, I could never really finish it, but it was a pretty great demonstration of what's to come. If you haven't tried HL2 in VR, I'd recommend it, since the models look to have a higher polygon count than the demos.
I owned a Pimax 4k VR for 5 months now. It is generally a great product. I never really had problems with it other than getting the software to work well with it. I had to downgrade to an older version and I use that to hook it up with Steam VR. (I don't use the crappy things that come with the Piplay program)
BROOO I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THE SAME KEYBOARD AS YOU, that keyboard is honestly dope, if you're looking for a cheap mechanical keyboard, that keyboard is the AJAZZ AK33 and it's even got rgb lighting
Hopefully the Pimax 8k version will have a 4k upscaling thing for games and native 8k for movies, because if so would be a great content consuming device
is Pimax still the best choice? I'm trying to save up for VR and I want to avoid the screendoor effect, and I'd like the highest possible FOV available. what would you recommend? also, I love your channel, subbed.
Another alternative that is 1:1 to vive/oculus which is somewhat cheaper is the razer hdk2 (it's a opensource devkit, Seated experience only or similair movement tracking like the Oculus DK2 and like the pimax no hand tracking devices, people are mentioning that you are able to hook up a kinect for room tracking and or a playstation eye camera with controller to also have motion controllers). If you think of getting a Vive or Oculus: The vive has better movement tracking up to 7.5 meters, oculus does so in 2,5 to 3m sideways and 1 to 2 meters forward/backward motion. (unless you buy more tracking stations). The vive has some weird cirular lenses (likely to prevent the screendoor effect a bit but you do notice these ingame after a while)... the visuals are much better on the oculus, and because of the soft housing it's allot lighter. Btw: Any game that has OpenVR support can run most if not any vr-system in some matter.
Great video, and good to see someone else trying to push the technology forward. Now, what is that gorgeous keyboard and where can I get it? I have been looking for something exactly like that for ages.
11:50 , you can use the nolo vr addon to get hands. It only has one base station, and costs about $100, but there are plenty of software workarounds that have been made, and have proven to work great. But if you are really on a budget, get a windows mr headset($200~$400), which has a bunch of sensors in the headset that track your head, and the controllers very well, and allow for a much bigger play space.
For the uploader: You can use the "Motion" Sensor on your vr and you wont need any controller. Really nice and easy to install, just glue it on the device. Maybe you can also solder it to the usb cable?
Superb work dude. The cutting in the music is really distracting and annoying though. Sounds like the video is buffering. The producer was getting trigger happy with the fader...
My experience with the Pimax as similar, but the 60hz is not the only downside it also have no depth, you can look around but not move you head closer, leaning ect ect. Can cause nausia in some VR games i tried.
Robbaz one of my favorite channels watches another one of my favorite channels :D so cool!
Robbaz Hello there my lord, want me to escort you walrus heaven?
Yeah. He did mention this in the video.
Only the rotational movement, no 6DoF? That's a shame, a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I could combine the 3 point LED model I cobbled together for flight sims to get the leaning in as well. I have to do some research.
oh shit he is here.
Seems to me like a well ROUNDED device -

Really great review and hilarious. RUclips finally suggested something good for once! Subscribed.
2kliksphilip did you try out Elite Dangerous with VR? I heard that it is one of the best VR games out by now...
i luv u (no homo)
Philip always makes hilarious videos, you're gonna love him

This is the first time ive seen 4K and "Budget" in the same sentence although it isnt really 4K which makes a lot more sense.
dont forget "VR"
13:54 it seems valve was working on HL3.
@the dark bun half-life Alyx IS half-life 3
@the dark bun are you being serious? The half life series is always been about innovation game mechanics, so vr is a logical step to take in order to achieve this
rfr Foglia whatdid he say he edited to say it has some hl3 files in it
Very nice, fair, honest review. I love your stuff, as always.

The music on all your channels Philip is always AMAZING!! :)
I think they'd be even more successful if they made a full hd or 2k even cheaper alternative. That'd blow mobilevr out of the water easily.
Marcos42563 yeah, 2k, 90hz+ and no headphones, proper controllers, 300€... to dream is free 😔
Marcos42563 or make it 2k with all six directions of tracking
i don't know about that. pretty soon, all you'll need for that is your phone. new android devices are all going to ship with gearvr grade vr-compatible motion tracking, so all you'll need for steam VR is a viable wireless connection to a pc, which is also coming with the new 10gbps wifi spec, and a middleware like riftcat, which is already available and works with any gyro-equipped phone (though it kinda sucks because the sensors are laggy in current phones).

15:50, Never thought I'd see the day Girl's Generation make it onto a 2kliksphilip video!
Adam Macdonald its hilarious
I love the Pure Pwnage reference at 1:08, haven't thought about that show in years
RUclips recommended something I actually wanted to watch? I'm blown away.
Im so glad you did a video on this.
Can't believe the Deus Ex devs ever thought controlling head direction with a controller was a good idea.
THIS IS THE ONLY DECENT REVIEW I HAVE EVER SEEN OF VR DOOOO MORE
Gearbest is an awful site. Google their reputation if you don't believe me. You will probably get what you ordered, but any support beyond that is impossible. i love your overcoat phillip it makes you mysterious and cool.
Hahaha that intro tho.
Probably hundreds of videos made accommodates to how well your camera shots are made. I im kinda envy of that
You sold me. I love the HTC vive but the bugger is too expensive.
But he hasnt even tried the vive. The vive is the best experience you can have on vr. this doesnt even have room scale or controllers it seems. I'd struggle to call it VR at all.
I have tried the vive myself.
so have i. it was honestly a let down. the little will to buy it i had before faded completely. i'll look into it again when it hits $300 and there's actually more than just minigames on the market.
@@GraveUypo I think it's reached that point now ;)
I liked the pure pwnage reference when you were walking in public. Gave me some nostalgia and now I'm watching cooking with dave (He's pro at cooking)
Great video! It's nice to see that there are cheaper VR alternatives to the Vive and the Oculus.
Welp, I wrote in the Discord something about Philip and VR, and two minutes later this is published. Nice.
I first saw the video about a week ago, spent most of the time since trying to come up with a good pun for the comments to challenge you with. Needless to say it was crap.
So, you are like god now, right?
60hz is a killer. 90hz is the bare minimum to do what PSVR, Oculus and Vive are doing. Basically this is a completely different kind of product from the main three VR headsets.
Oh and headtracking is very important that this is missing.
PSVR is also 60hz, and this uses the same fake 120hz interpolation.
I can't help but be somewhat impressed that the PSVR runs at 90Hz on a PS4. Pretty good optimization (sorry for necroing the comment thread).
philip, that intro was amazing 10/10!!
not having basestations, controllers and the worse refresh rate makes the price seem a bit overpriced... if you take the 700€ of the vive and then remove 240€ for the basestations and 200€ for the controllers (in store prices -150€ because they probably don't cost that much too make) you get about 260 € for the headset... now lets compare that to 300£ and you see wich one of them really is cheaper... Nice review and the outdoor shots were hilarious
If the 4k headset doesn't have IR emitters on the headset itself, the base stations wouldn't work for spacial positioning.
This video is unavailable on this device. Nice, RUclips!
>if you're poor
>$300
...
300 dollar compared with 700+
i know i know.
bratan why dont u buy bitcoins 10 months ago??
Define poor exactly?
cybersasho Because we are poor and didnt had money for it lol.
1:34 im dying of laughter lmao
thanks for brutally murdering me with your ''kliky'' jokes hehe
I wish there was a cheaper, 1080p version :/
But it's already quite cheap....and 4k is their selling point
You're probably gold with the OSVR HDK1, never tried it but it seems like it does what's on the tin.
yea, I just want to watch movies
KodredCud agree with those below. A OSVR 1.4 or a DK2 is provably what you want. Just remember you get screen door effect at those lower resolutions.
AirplaneRandy for movies just get like google cardboard for your phone
looking right out of Cyberpunk in public like that.
nice.
I've tried all three, the Vive, the Oculus, and recently the Pimax 4k. A friend who makes games for VR got one and let me try it. tagtag123 it's 60hz
Oops yeah, that's a typo. Fixed it thanks.
Lmao 30Hz would be unplayable
I was like, "how the f everyone on yt is a sound expert and knows to determine highs, mids and lows, while im yet to understand what they are" and then you got me. LOL, I love your humor.
how is it for stationary stuff? like elite dangerous or DCS world? stuff that doesn't need special controllers or weird movement.
also now i want icecream, god damn it philip.
Here is a tip : If you cross your eyes the right amount during the vr footage, you will get double vision. Adjust how crossed your eyes are until the left video overlaps with the right video. Now you can see in 3d.
How much alcohol did you drink as a child?
"Since I was a child"
not "While I was a child"
Justyn HaLl hasn't vomited from anything OTHER THAN alcohol, insinuating vomiting from things OTHER THAN alcohol during childhood, you dummies
people are good at taking jokes like real talk 200% autism
Captain Jack when are you going to release your VR Video? I can't wait to feel that experience.
I really enjoyed your video my friend, thanks for using your time to make it
>bamdwidth limitations
why not use HDMI 2.0??? silly company.
1:35 - That Oblivion Soundtrack though, the nostalgia xD
I just found out that pimax released a controller named Nolo.
Maybe you could check it out? ;)
well ... on a rewatch ...
I assume the "buzzing" is probably the resistor.

Holy shit, scrolled down to the comments just when I saw this hahaha

Excellent review. It's interesting to see how decent this device compares to mainstream counterparts. Although at the time of leaving this comment, the Rift doesn't cost much more, but still it's nice to see cheaper alternatives. $800 for the Vive was too much for me to consider it seriously, but in the $400 range I'm much more likely to take the plunge (and I have).
Can you use wii-motes?
Aaaah. the oblivion music, lovely 1:33
That intro though. UNATCO?
No. Savage.
Quit screwing around.
Great video - well thought out. Thanks Philip!
Does it induce nausea if you use the Pimax while eating 500g of sugar free gummi bears?
nice text also good timing with real life clips
I imagine the Pimax has a much lower framerate as it's higher resolution and cheaper.
framerate depends on your video card.
The only downside as mentioned in the video is that the Pimax has 60hz refresh rate, compared to 90 on the HTC Vibe and Oculus Rift
And it doesnt have controllers and stations. As a Vive owner thats something must have with vr.
Watch the video before commenting... and your answer will be revealed
Well it doesnt have not yet
Oh I was talking to batteryacid :P
19 minute PHILIP VIDEO!!!?!?!?! *makes mac'n cheeze* LETS GOOOOO

However for cardboard headsets you only get a limited selection (Google, Chinese Wholesaler and those binoculars you pulled apart)
With a couple of cameras, a good quality USB cable a good phone and some know-how anything is possible.
Well what about refresh rate? Your probably going to get 30HZ from a 7 Plus (coming from experience)
Can't play Elite Dangerous on a smartphone.
this has to be the first outdoor vr hardware review
What you were saying about the nausea, apparently it's more likely to happen if you're very resistant to "travel sickness". Something about your body telling your brain that you're moving vs your brain telling your body that you're moving. I experienced it while trying out HL2 in VR on a rift DK2, since I always got nauseous about halfway through a level, I could never really finish it, but it was a pretty great demonstration of what's to come. If you haven't tried HL2 in VR, I'd recommend it, since the models look to have a higher polygon count than the demos.
Lovely video Philip!
I owned a Pimax 4k VR for 5 months now. It is generally a great product. I never really had problems with it other than getting the software to work well with it. I had to downgrade to an older version and I use that to hook it up with Steam VR. (I don't use the crappy things that come with the Piplay program)
Thank you very much for this excellent and detailed overview!
Damn it! It's so close, and yet so far! My 4K monitor will have to suffice for now...
BROOO I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THE SAME KEYBOARD AS YOU, that keyboard is honestly dope, if you're looking for a cheap mechanical keyboard, that keyboard is the AJAZZ AK33 and it's even got rgb lighting
You have amazing humour - great job!
I really like the random shots with the headset on your head. Looks very futute.
I'm glad that VR could bring competition to make these headsets cheaper and higher quality.
20 minutes of phillip?
Never before have I clicked a video so quickly...
Hopefully the Pimax 8k version will have a 4k upscaling thing for games and native 8k for movies, because if so would be a great content consuming device
those built in headphones actually look really good, they look much better than what other headsets do
finally you have a decent desk and proper mousepad !
Very positive review for kliksphilip standards
I've tried a Vive and the biggest letdown for me was the low resolution. This being 4k looks like it might be the solution!
Great video. Really makes me think about using the product if I had one.
loved the outdoor scenes.
specially 18:16
is Pimax still the best choice? I'm trying to save up for VR and I want to avoid the screendoor effect, and I'd like the highest possible FOV available. what would you recommend? also, I love your channel, subbed.
Nice Oblivion song at 1:34
The more companies the better, competition is the greatest innovator and I cant wait for vr to get more affordable
1:06 calm yourself jeremy. i respect the subtle pure pwnage callout.
You look like FPS Russia! Love your review! Thanks
pimax 8k sounds good, I'll wait :)
Oh how far vr has come.
Great video, and good to see someone else trying to push the technology forward. Now, what is that gorgeous keyboard and where can I get it? I have been looking for something exactly like that for ages.
Watching Philip talk at 0.5x speed is really pleasing, for some odd reason.
Those small videos in the city. So so funny haha
I think this is really good for simulations such as Project Cars or DCS, where moving around is not necessary.
typing on that keyboard looked trippy af °-°
there are two reasons i want a VR headset. Warthunder with a joystick, and racing games with a pedals and racing wheel
I like the Pure Pwnage reference.
1:09 All about that micro, combination of just talking casually and 9:22 made me rofl hard heh heh heh
Great review. Thanks!
For the uploader:
You can use the "Motion" Sensor on your vr and you wont need any controller.
Really nice and easy to install, just glue it on the device.
Maybe you can also solder it to the usb cable?
Superb work dude. The cutting in the music is really distracting and annoying though. Sounds like the video is buffering. The producer was getting trigger happy with the fader...
