  • Hailing from Japan and formed in 2013, Band-Maid has carved a unique niche in the music scene. Their sound blends the traditional aesthetics of Japan with a modern hard rock and heavy metal punch. The band, consisting of Miku Kobato on vocals and rhythm guitar, Kanami Tōno on lead guitar, Saiki on vocals, Akane on drums, and Misa on bass, has captured international attention with their electrifying performances and infectious energy.
"The Non-Fiction Days," comes from their 2016 album, "Brand New Maid."

The story behind this song is that it was shot on a wind-swept beach in the middle of winter in Japan. Japan is on the same latitude as New England. It was brutally cold that day. There is a mini-documentary on RUclips of the filming of the video. The Maids wore their normal maid outfits during the shots and were probably freezing their butts off. The filming took all day. There are photos of the maids huddling in long insulated coats between shots. The night scenes had fire barrels for lighting, but the Maids stayed close (too close) to them to stay warm. Saiki and Akane's coats caugh fire because they got too close to the fires. These young women's motto is "whatever it takes" to get their music out to the masses. They are rock troopers.

It's The Non Fiction Days & the very real BAND-MAID even set the beach on fire with their red hot music :)

The Non-Fiction Days use to be their go-to closer. When the song ended, the Maids would give Miku her few seconds to say goodbye, bow, and then all quickly walk off stage. The crowd felt like they'd been run over by a speeding freight train of awesomeness. It all felt so good and the fans wanted more! But they were leaving... until next time! Thx, Adrian & Glenn!

The location is Namasaki Wind Farm (Cosmo Eco Power Company) Sudahama Beach, Suda. It's about 80 miles due East of Tokyo. The pier looking thing in the background is the Hasaki Marine Research Facility.
Shot in the middle of winter, It was so cold the ladies had huge parkas to wear in between takes. Akane and Kanami set their parkas on fire from the flames trying to keep warm!

This is such a good song for driving down the road with the wind in your hair that sometimes I just sit in the house with a fan pointed at my face listening to it. How can you non-like the Non Fiction Days?

Their best "outside writer" song in my honest opinion. You can't tell just by watching, but it was a very cold and windy winter day on that beach where they filmed. Yes, the fires were absolutely real and a few of the girls got a little too close and singed their parkas in between takes. 🤣

The incredible first track off the truly epic EP/album Brand New Maid, where their record label finally realized that the Maids should be allowed to record the songs that they write because they were all complete and utter bangers. Thrill was the gateway song for me (like it is for so many people) some three and a half years ago, but very soon afterwards I listened to The Non-Fiction Days and realized that Band-Maid were the best prog hard rock band on the planet. I have not looked back since.

🎉 Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite “Tiny Hat Era” Band Maid jams.
“Stereo EQ sweep,” “flanger,” whatever it was is exactly what Hoobastank used for “Crawling in the Dark.”
It was a cold day on the beach 🏝️ There are photos of the girls in big black puffy eskimo jackets to keep warm in between takes. Some people see Saiki’s red cheeks and mistakenly think it was due to cold, when it was actually her makeup style at the time.

Kanami in her pre-PRS Addictone guitar, MISA in her 4-string bass days and I believe this is Miku's first Zemaitis guitar.
This one hits HARD! and is just as relevant today.
I do know they were at the beach ALL DAY into the night and it was windy and cold, I believe they added the fire to keep them warm.
My understanding from comments over the years is that Akane's tiny hat used to be MISA's. MISA hated it and threw it away. Akane thought it was cute and dug it out of the trash and started using it. She stopped using it maybe end of 2017 or beginning of 2018.

This is indeed the first "Official" video with Miku playing a Zemaitis, although the secret "alternate" Alone video is really the first we see the Z.

The maid wore car coats (go all the way to the ground) between takes and the cameramen wore them when the maids were filming the night scenes and I believe that two of the cameramen caught the coat on fire trying to stand as close as possible to the flames to keep warm. The other thing I like in the video, is that Akane hurt her leg a few weeks before this was filmed so they had to use a stand in for one gig. Well the Madiacs took the opportunity to send her a bunch of drum stick with get well messages written on them and I think you can see her using them in this video

The flames were real. During the shooting, Akane's dress caught on fire (it was put out immediately by the crew). The winds blew strongly throughout the shoot (stills exist showing the band members in their Arctic Terror warming gear, worn at all times when the camera was not "rolling").

This shoot was a lot like the one for 'Shambles'. It was a very cold day, and an even colder night. So much so, that the only time the girls were warm, other than in between shots with their coats on, was when they flames were going. Now 'Shambles was shot in an open warehouse, so at least they were out of the wind, for the most part. But you should do 'Shambles' next. It was commissioned for the Netflix Anime, Kengan Ashura. There's also a LIVE version, but this is one of those rare cases where the Music Video is the definitive version, like 'Unleash' where they appear in anime form.

I consider this song and Real Existence as the earliest examples of the Band Maid "sound". Both are not band written, but the band must have had a hand in the musical arrangement.

Band-Maidstein 🙂has fire effects in their videos frequently. In the very early days Misa was wearing the hat. Ckeck out the album cover of their debut album "Maid in Japan".
