    "Non-Fiction Days" is such a great start to the album. It's arguably their best song pre-"Alone" and I think it sounds the most Band-Maid of those songs.
    Regarding their early albums, this part of an interview they did with Barks magazine was insightful (translation by t-shinji):
    "- In the beginning, you received songs form external songwriters, and you must have received opinions on how you should do. I think in that case, generally, you tend to rebel like “No, we are not like that. We want to do something unique to us.” No matter how good provided songs are, and no matter how well they suit you, you want to rebel. It’s like when you are about to do something, your parents tell you to do it (laughs). However, according to what you said, you didn’t have such unfortunate relationships then, and you think your experiences at that time have become your roots, don’t you?
    Miku Kobato: That’s right, po. Actually, we are the type who can quite frankly say no (laughs). For example, even when we received a song from a veteran songwriter, we talked with him like “We want to change it like this”… We didn’t just play what we received.
    Saiki: I think many of those veteran songwriters were quite generous. They were rather like “If you have something you want to do, tell me.” So I often frankly said “I don’t like this part” (laughs).
    Miku Kobato: Like “How about changing this part to this expression?”
    Saiki: Yeah. We said like that, and through that, we learned quite a lot about our own identity and color and what we actually wanted. That made us able to express by ourselves, so that wasn’t negative at all, and that made it easy for us to digest songs.
    Miku Kobato: Yeah. We’ve been doing in the way that suits us, po.
    "

    I think as you said they took a lot from what they learned in the early days and from the writers. Also I think they are just much better musicians technically now than they were back then. They’ve progressed so much with each album, even after they started writing their own songs. All and all I think them having songs written for them was probably a benefit, almost like an apprenticeship. And we have the maids we have now due to the road they traveled and I wouldn’t remove a single domino, or they all might just fall down. Great video! Great drawing as always! Keep up the great work.

    I really like the old stuff, but you can clearly hear its not composed from Kanami... Its really like they´ve "restricted" them and they had a little spotlight to show off and otherwise it has to be "casual", like i said i hear these songs too all the time, but if you compare it with their own stuff especially for MISA its SO DIFFERENT :)
    Great decision to do their own stuff, they evolved a lot and these early days helped them in terms of songwriting too ! Greetings from Germany

    • @Parker--
      @Parker-- 2 года назад +1

      I don't think it's fair to say they "restricted" them so much as they were given the basic formula and they didn't fight to reinvent the wheel and experiment. Maybe Misa isn't as utilized, but you can hear everything everybody else is doing just absolutely shine through, but it's all structured in a very, very familiar song structure built to show the talent rather than have it live or die on changing the formula and how to compose a song. Like, if they didn't push to change a bridge so that it becomes the spotlight of the song and be worthy of a song itself and then blend it into the chorus at the end, like Blooming, is it really restricting them for not pushing them to do that? Does JBI sound more technically proficient than BNM? Not to me. Now, does it sound like they found a better sound and do they experiment with the formula to make songs like Moratorium, Puzzle and Cross standout because they explicitly don't stick to conventional music formula? Absolutely. I don't think the talent and execution evolved by any huge amount; I think the evolution of their understanding of music evolved once they took the reigns. You can't blame the writers and composers for not reinventing the wheel for them. That's something they had to do for themselves.
      Also, part of Kanami's genius is not excessively showing off. Everybody still gets their same little moments to shine through; the difference is the moments are atypical of what you normally hear so it gets more attention that it would otherwise.

    Excellent choice sir. At times I love to listen to their production chronologically simply because it's an amazing trip and you can literally see how their musicianship and songwriting skills are gaining sharp edges. Yuragu, Order... that bridge in Brand New Road where MISA sounds like a jazz double bass!. Listening to this album is like watching take off a powerful Atlas rocket climbing to the moon. Who could stop them?. Absolutely nobody.

    Still a relative newbie to BAND-MAID, so for what it's worth... To me, it sounds like you can hear the ladies straining at the bonds that are holding them back. They manage to shine through occasionally, particularly during the solos (and the jazzy thing in "Brand New Road"? Holy Sh**!), but it's not quite them (except for Akane...jesus!). My guess is that "Alone" will stand out like a bright, shining diamond at the end of Part 2. As always Ryan, thanks a ton!

    This this the album before their full album debut "Just Bring It", which they wrote. For this album you're listening to, "Alone" is the one track they wrote. It's nice to hear this album then to hear their more recent live versions to see the progression of their skills and musicianship. This album is before Misa changed to a 5 string bass since they had not tuned things down a half step yet, Miku didn't have her Zemaitis yet and Kanami was still using Addictone guitars. PRS was the next album. This album is more straightforward but the writers did keep their abilities in mind and I know Kanami was allowed to input her style more in this album.
    Thanks Ryan. The artwork is looking amazing.

    Out of the three BAND-MAID albums, before they started writing most of their own music (Maid in Japan, New Beginning, Brand New Maid), my favorite is New Beginning. It obviously doesn't have the complexity of Unseen World, but it rocks pretty hard (like Shake That, Don't let me down) and there are some interesting songs (FREEZER, Arcadia Girl, Beauty and the Beast).

    That little jazzy section before the solo in Brand New Road gives me a little bit of Kansas or Yes vibes. Pretty sure that's the only place in their catalog where I can say that. Kansas or Yes would probably have done it for 2 minutes while Band-Maid does it for a few seconds and moves on.
    Saiki has always been a good singer but her vocal performances have so much more dynamics in them now. She was only 19 when she joined the band and talks about how she knew nothing at the time. She didn't even know how to do a sound check. She has come a long way.

    The Non-Fiction Days is one of my favorite Band-Maid songs. They used to end shows with it, and it’s one of those songs where you could believe they wrote it themselves. It also does sound better live and they bring so much energy when they play it. This album is great in that you can see where they start to turn that corner and grow their own wings in terms of music and songwriting. Not their best album but an important one.

    Ryan!
    Back to you after this reaction!
    Like you, having been spoiled by the "real" Band Maid it is sometimes tough to listen to.
    It is not bad at all, whatever the die-hard fans say, but...
    They sound like a beast trying to break through its shackles. The head (vocals) is still very much under the control of their management/Japanese music industry, but the tail, legs and talons are starting to apply enormous pressure onto their chains already at the rare moments they are allowed some kind of freedom!
    The main reason I have so much respect (love is another thing!) for them, and it is very difficult for non-Japanese to grasp, is that they somehow broke through barriers that no other band had done before, notwithstanding all-female bands.
    Thanks to these ladies the Japanese music industry will have to change or else.
    Younger bands (Asterism for one) are following suit. When you know that Akane and Kanami spend time together watching and listening at other bands, some small-appendaged morons will soon feel they are not only bullied at home but also in their professional sorry lives!
    I said it before, I am a man and proud to be born a man, but I will support any ladies bent on showing some sense to some male idiots! My mother's influence? Certainly!
    I told you I was going to write books! LOL
    Going to Part 2!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

    Band-maid in their early stage imo sounds like another all girl band called Scandal. I think their management was pushing them into the direction. Because Scandal was the reigning girl band at that time and probably the recording label wanted Band-maid to be the next Scandal... and the girls weren't too happy about it, "look at me" is one of the rare Band-maid songs that isn't on my playlist, I'm not lying it's not like I love every Band-maid song. If new beginning was their seedling stage album, this is their budding-flowering stage album. The next album "Just Bring It" brought out the band's distinctive sound that we are familiar with. Brand New Road is one of my favorite songs on this album.

      But there are other indie bands, less known bands that are more interesting so I'll keep my mind and ears open. I went through Wagakki Band phase (their music up until 2017 was great imo) and came back to band-maid, and I mostly listen to them ever since.

    Definitely this album's songs sound better live. Remember we still didn't have Miku with more abilities on guitar and her Zemaitis crunchy + heavy tone, MISA's Black Smoker bass or Kanami's PRS + her Mesa Boogie amp. But sometimes i miss her Addictone guitar's tone thou. I personally like "YURAGU" very much (the next song that will be in Part 2). Great reaction, great insights! Yeah, I think this is my least favorite Band-Maid album. It's still a good album, I don't think any of the songs are bad. But I think it's because on this album, even more so than on New Beginning or Maid in Japan, you can hear when Kanami, MISA, and Akane are being reigned in and when they're set free to do what they will. The contrast is really striking. The bridge and solo sections of ORDER compared to the rest of the song are a great example. The song as a whole is pretty good - one of my favorites from this album - but that bridge section really cooks.

    BNM is a great album. You can already hear the distinct Band-Maid sound developing.
    They had good writers (well other than the dude who wrote Don't Let Me Down) and the management was willing to let them add their uniqueness to the music as well.
    Yeah, the mix is a bit softer on this album vs. everything after. Also keep in mind I believe MISA is still playing a 4 string bass and Kanami is still playing Addictone (I may be wrong on that).

    Take into consideration before being too harsh..... Japan do things VERY different to the west... And music is no exception
    As per Band Maid..... They regard Maid In Japan, New Beginning and Brand New Maid as "mini albums", in between an EP and a full on Album. In the bands eye's, Unseen World is their 4th Album. There are so many hidden gems in their previous 3 "mini albums". And when a "Maidiac" says ...... "they are so good, there isn't a bad song!!" ... they mean ALL of what B-M has released. ... ALL.
    It seems that the first 3 releases were "school/college projects"..... Teachers and Lecturers teaching their students, YET allowing them to evolve into their own character.... this is what happens at Art school. It has been stated that Kanami submitted over 100 songs before "Alone" was "allowed" to be released. Saiki was Kanami's main cheerleader. Over beers, when Kanami would get depressed about songwriting, it was Saiki that would always encourage Kanami to continue...... This is another reason why I love this band...... they are so ... human.
    Do they have bad songs??? Of course they do. It's just they have (IMO) way more good songs than bad..... waaaaay more, even if they didn't write it..... and most of their "lesser" songs are from outside writers... Before Kanami found her groove. Check out "Start Over". This song occurred when Kanami had "Writers Block". This song very divisive. For me it is the polar opposite to Blooming. With Blooming, Kanami gave the others an "assignment" to come up with a riff/something and then Kanami would arrange it..... With Start Over, it was the girls trying to help Kanami with her writers block ...... As you will find out... the songs are polar opposites..
    Look At Me.... Filler........................................ but the talent is there. One has to understand their history to truly appreciate them... From "Maid In Japan!" it is a snowball that's just getting bigger.. to now, and forward..... taking everything in it's path.

    The choice of album was a bit surprising, but I guess it's what you had on hand so it makes sense.
    The BAND-MAIKO album is mostly covers of BAND-MAID songs. I'm not sure if you would want to hear the originals first.

    Ryan!
    I missed this particular series! I am now at 11:06, but I will keep my comments for later!
    Now, I have a suggestion/challenge for you:
    Find the most endearing picture of a smiling Misa (just her face) and draw her with a background of a Dragon flying through lightnings!
    I am sure you will please a lot of your fans and Band Maid fans!
    Incidentally, do you like fantasy novels?
    Best regards,

    That's a good album too. I'm not sure you'd like Maid In Japan or not. It's just a different style, more "commercial". Personally the earlier stuff seems more lead gtr driven in my opinion. As for doing their own music I wonder if that's why they've switched labels so many times, movement toward their own control and self determination. Anyway, I don't know that much so I speculate.

    Personally I like the 2nd album better than this- Freezer, Thrill, and Shake That its best songs. This along w/ Conqueror are their weakest imo, although Conqueror has 3 bangers like Glory, Blooming, and Rinne. World Domination to me is their best album- best production, best riffs and it's Band-Maid at their heaviest and grooviest. Just Bring It is probably their most polished album (and contains their best song in Puzzle). Unseen World to me is a bit experimental as far as Kanami testing her limits as a player and a songwriter and it's great, but World Domination is just a more complete and realized album to my ears. I can't wait for what they have next! I'm sure they are releasing another album by December or January. They're so prolific.

    • @Parker--
      @Parker-- 2 года назад +1

      I agree with pretty much everything said here. I like New Beginning more as well. Freezer is somewhere between my 2nd and 5th favorite song of theirs depending on the day. Conqueror has some bangers for sure, but it is extremely uneven. Part of me rationally says WD is their best album because it is a better listen all the way through than JBI, but the hits on JBI, is peak B-M IMHO. Moratorium is my favorite. Puzzle, Secret My Lips, Don't You tell Me, Cross, and take Me Higher are simply some of their best tracks and the soundscape used for that album and specifically Kanami's guitar are just absolutely my jam. I think Warning is another top 5 B-M song and one of my top 5, but yeah UW and singles since have been a bit too experimental for my personal tastes. I'm not as big a fan of the circus/carnival guitar used in Black Hole, Different and Sense. I'm hoping Kanami reels it in a bit and moves towards a more hard rock sound with the next album.

    I believe someone else mentioned the song Order, I think it was the first time Misa put effort into slapping. I know that she hurt her fingers because she practised too much. Another older song Turn me on is a Misa/Akane intro master-class. I think you will like both.

    @Ryan Mear You can have your opinion, but it seems a little one-sided to me. I was a fan of them a long time ago and this songs did catch me and make me a fan. I was watching them growing and step forward and it is amazing what they do now. But don't forget your past when you look into the future. Band-Maid is Band-Maid with all their facets. By the way, Miku did already make some lyrics with the compositions of other composers than Kanami, maybe also this one? I don't know, but I respect and accept.
    And to correct you, they are not begging for attention from guys, they are telling a story out of life.This stories happen in real life, why should they not sing about it.
    Band-Maid of the past is as amazing as they are now. Different, but still good. I love all their songs.

    • @RyanMear
      @RyanMear  3 года назад +2

      I think there's are two other songs co- written by Miku. One with Saiki. I think I mentioned the same things you did in the video. I never said those things don't happen in real life, it's just evident, by BAND-MAID's lack of any songs like that since writing on their own, that they wouldn't have written it.

  • @Gabor...hachi.juu_ichi
    @Gabor...hachi.juu_ichi 3 года назад +1

    Aside from all the well known facts mentioned in the comments about the freedom and progression of their songwriting, another major noticeable element for me is the evolution of Saikis voice and vocal style too. Which leads me to the general observation of how much their vocal arrangements were influenced by anime soundtrack pop-rock style. It is still evident, even on Unseen World, though totally uniquely morphed into the complexities of the musical arrangement. Mainly with songs that feature a lot of Miku's vocals. Her soft tone and phrasing is a masterclass of that style. This is why they were unique straight away as they managed to cleverly fuse the styles and just worked. Growing up or even living briefly in Japan one simply cannot ignore the music of anime, it's everywhere. Can also recognise the influence of Japanese punk rock, shoegaze, noise rock, even math rock ( at slower parts or tempo changes as well as some of the free run bass lines). All of this of course would have been saturated subconsciously and they all just turned it into a unique amalgam of awesomeness!
    With the whole thing of writing their own material, another major element worth noting is the signature of Miku's lyrics and the vocal melodies. That also definitely put a stamp on "the real Band Maid" sound we hear from "Just Bring It" ( by the way, worth doing a full reaction on that album, there are some proper gems on it)
    Damn, sorry for the verbal diarrhoea, I just get excited about BM and only discovered Mr Mear's channel recently which is now my favourite thanks to his effortless cool.
