here is the part 1 of 3 parts reviewing this instrumental album. I,ve never know a band to put soo much into their music that you wouldn't miss the vocals. Even when the vocals are from Miku and Saiki!!!!

I love Kanami and her love for dissonant notes. I heard BM live many times in small venues in Japan and when they came to LA I asked her, about that, not sure it was translated right but she gave me 2 thumbs up. As to Misa, she figured out the importance to establish a distinguished bass tone/sound very early on and mastered it, besides her musical ability. I do studio work as a Bass Player, sometimes in Japan because of family and I had a few engineers referencing Misa as to the sound they would like on their Bass track. Talking about Akane, she almost never repeats patterns and uses that progressivee style throughout, and that's not easy for a bass player since playing in the pocket requires ability to play a progressive style as well. Overall, as a musician for almost 40 years, BM captured everything I always wanted in a Band. Even in Japan I noticed many musicians in their audience, including Miyako and Haruna of Lovebites one time. I wish we would have the same in the US as to live music of that particular genre, in Europe its somewhat happening. Luckily my work allowes for me to run all over the globe and follow may favorite Bands.

That was some great insights. There was one guitarist reactor who recently said he would fly across the country to play with Misa. He wishes he could find a bass player like that for his band. As they say...game recognizes game.

What an excellent comment sir!!. In the last talk in BM Prime between Miku and Akane, it seems that the ones who don't have an easy time following MISA and Kanami's creative passion for transitions are the girls in charge of keeping the rythm up. However, the approach they make to this "problem" is absolutely self-challenging to be up to it and contribute with their own creative complexity. Someone said "fractal" about this way of composing in a comment. For me, it definitely works.
Wonderful comment. Thank you for sharing your stories. So heartening to hear that other musicians appreciate their sound (and not just us musical plebs who their love music but are know-nothings otherwise lol).
This band is like an orchestra or a quartet.
KANAMI creates music that works well without vocals.
Two layers of vocals are added to that, and it becomes one work.
Their music is really fun.
I really like the idea of a quartet in the very classical way!
We still haven't fully digested the quintessence of Unseen World that Band-Maid is just about to release a new full album. Go figure the amount of music possibly stored in Kanami's music vault. A cavern with tons of hidden gems just waiting to be crafted by the 5 ladies.
They say it will be an EP. We know from the past that they considered New Beginning and Brand New Maid as "EP"s, and they contain nine and eight songs, respectively. So, the new album may contain anywhere from 6 to 9 songs.
What you said during No God, "who writes like this" is exactly the reason I love this band so, so much. There is absolutely no reason to be this dense compositionally but they do it anyway and it's at the same time never too much because this band in impossible.
Yep they cannot exist because they are impossible, but I'm glad they do!
It's from their (Kanami mostly) classical training. Western classical music, which also includes Baroque & Romantic eras (early & late) are usually this complex. Also includes Jazz. Of course it's all encased in modern prog rock/metal sound, composition & instrumentation & also includes inspiration from past rock music.
When I ripped the CD to files for my library...I changed this album title to "Unheard World" 😁
The most important point is the writer is female & all the member. Did you ever heard female band play this kind of music before? Never. Even a male band that can write this kind of music is so marginal.

I really have come to appreciate the No God instrumental. Making the MIDI of it last week gave me a renewed appreciation for everything Kanami does underneath the vocals.

I'm always amazed at how much of the music is buried under Saiki and Miku's vocal work, they are a brobdinagian top presence on the layers of sound, once the vocal is removed you can start to hear more aspects of sounds that are not powerful to rival the vocals, it also goes in the other direction as well, you remove the music from the vocals and really get to hear just how much Miku is doing on any second in time, quite amazing really, this is why Band Maid has no rival's.
I am sooooo glad you did that! Yes, that is backward masking. On Manners, I got serious 67-68 Beatle vibes, with the horns sounded like Strawberry Fields, and the backward masking like Walrus. And that sounds like when you would do fast reverse on your car cassette player but it was like 90% engaged.

On Prime, Akane talking with Miku....She says she writes out all of the drum parts on sheet music ... note by note. So I think that in itself tells you they are very disciplined. The bass usually follows the rhythm guitar...Misa is just running all over the place lol absolutely love everything they do. its disgusting how hooked i am, 2 years now. ALWAYS catches you off guard, that's why i watch you Ryan, I have the same reaction. Thanks' for these in depth shows. Giovanni too. I don't think any of us realized what's behind Saiki a Miku . I didnt. And all of what's there 100% supports the vocals. genius all the time. amazing

Every time I listen to this CD I'm like "Who even needs Saiki?!" Then I listen to the normal CD and I'm like "Oh they definitely need Saiki."
Also still no idea how Miku comes up with lyrics after hearing the backing track! Lol props to the pigeon queen 🐦 👑!!
Kanami doesn't only provide the backing but also the vocal melody -that Saiki and Miku can twist to their desire to some degree.
@@realdocloco This is true. I'd love for them to release a couple demos & studio cuts in like a special edition something or other. It would be interesting to hear how Kanami records the vocal melodies. Piano? Sing/hums it? Both? ....& how close the end product is to her demo.

@@lordvorador5735 I like your idea. I'm curious how Giovanni was arranged with the addition of the lyrics. She seems to me so difficult to sing. How does Saiki find moments to breathe? It's extraordinary.
@@lordvorador5735 Somebody said that Kanami uses a dummy voice generator in her software. "Default talk" sort of thing. It sounds like words, but in fact, it's only a vocalisation, just fake words.
When I order this scorebook/instrumental CD set, I thought to myself that this was going to be one of those albums to listen as a curiosity, something interesting to check out every now and then. But this stands out on it's own - these songs as instrumental are "complete", it doesn't feel like the vocals are missing - and I know what you mean - I love Saiki, it's my fav vocalist these days - so it almost feels wrong to acknowledge how awesome these songs are without the vocals.
I've checked out a few instrumental versions of songs from other bands and it just feels like the engineer simply clicked off the vocals track and there is something clearly missing... like it's the karaoke version of the single... it's just odd.
And you know what's great as well? It's been almost 10 years since Band-Maid was put together and we still get THIS! I can't wait for this summer's new EP...
I can still hear Saiki's voice in my head while listening to the instrumental cd - love it, but my partner prefer the album version.
You would think I know these songs inside and out as many times as I've heard them but as soon as you take the vocals out, it's 90% brand new to me.🤯😳🥴😵

Not "female" guitarist, just guitarist. And for me, Kanami is my favorite musician. I love the direction BAND-MAID is taking and I trust Kanami completely on what she's going to do next. She just has to put a pillow on her seat and drive the van to infinity and beyond

@@2abug The reason why I called it "female" is that the video is actually uploaded with that title. In fact,Kanami is my number one favorite of all guitarists!
Kanami has Carlos Santana and Eddie Van Halen as her inspiration, she has managed to capture the soul of CS and EVH in her playing in a very creative manner. I hold Kanami as on of the best guitar players of our time, her composing skills are over the hills and far away compared to many other great players (I'm an old Gary Moore fan LOL).
All songs sounds different without vocals you can here the instruments clearly. Thats great. Both rype are great with and without vocals. They should release on every album 3 discs: instrumental only, acoustic versions and normal songs.

The secret weapon they use is all 4instruments play a part of the melody, but you need all 4 parts to hear it. Something other bands aren't doing?(with Saiki layering above it all)

I always tell my fellow band members in the band I play with: Great bands create music in a way that, if you listen to any single instrument you would not know if they played the same song, but when you listen to all of them together you will hear the song clearly. Which is exactly what Band-Maid does. I my own subtle way I'm trying to get our guitar players to play different lines without telling them to, I'm a bass player so I'm not supposed to tell them anything LOL
Really enjoyed this! I'm always impressed by how this band creates such complex, nuanced and textured sounds in the classic rock song formula. Thing I love most about them is their unique sound; they don't - to me - sound like any other band making this style of music. Sure, some songs resemble older classics, but their full catalog as a whole is just so distinct and original. Amazing band.
Thank you for always great analysis. As I always think, even as an instrumental band, they have a rare enough talent, but they put a catchy melody on it. Furthermore, Miku's lyrics are deeply meaningful. And the harmony of powerful and delicate Saiki vocals and Miku. While it is still evolving, the unity of the band is also strengthening. Even so, it's fun and adorable like a comedian! There is no reason why I can't love such a band.

Ok first things first: it's staggering how much Saiki and Miku's vocals add to the songs. I found myself humming the vocals during this whole video because i miss them so much lol
But, with that being said, it's absolutely amazing how well each and every song works in its instrumental version. They added so much details, so many things that will go unnoticed under the vocal melodies... but they don't care, because that's how Band-Maid works, they're not a lazy band at all. And that's one of the reasons on why they are the best rock band in the world

even in instrumental track, Kobato's war cry "DON'T SAY YOU LOVE MEEEE" still running in my head since day 1.

I listen to them so much that they become "default" music to me; I start to take what they're doing for granted. At that point it's fun to go back and listen to my pre-Band-Maid playlists for a couple of weeks, then go back to Band-Maid and especially Unseen World. They're incomparable.

For a band without a keyboardist, Band-Maid has some of the best synth parts that really enhance the quality of a song.
In an alternate universe Kanami's guitar lines in the choruses could have been the vocal melodies, and the songs would have been just as good.
This album has no fault or bad songs on it, it feels like you heard the songs for fist time. MISA goes ape on"I still seek revenge", as in every song. These girls are beyond gifted!!!! ( I´v changed my icon to a young MISA). Thanx Ryan!

After Life is one of the songs that blew me away when I heard the instrumental. So much cool hidden guitar parts! You teased I still seek revenge, which also has a couple of hidden gems.
It really does boggle the mind just how much more is going on than you think, even with the vocals stripped out. Having a sort of guided tour of neat things to listen for is really great.
And since I don't think I've seen anyone else comment RE: the reversed bit at the end of Manners yet, it sounds like a slightly distorted female voice singing something like "I've been thinkin' 'bout you" over and over. The voice doesn't sound quite like either Saiki or Miku, and the intonation seems more like native English, so I'm thinking it's some kind of sample. I'm terrible at placing genres, but kind of R&B ish maybe? That's about as much as I could sleuth out though!

I played the end of Manners that was in reverse in Forward. Now I hear KURUPPOOO at 3am every night.
I know you've mentioned it before that Kanami has so many riffs in one song that they could be their own song in itself. Listening to the instrumentals, this is accentuated. There are so many riff and chord changes throughout each song than you realize, because we constantly focus on Saiki's vocals. Each of these songs tells it's own story without the vocals and could carry an entire concert without the listener becoming bored. It really is stunning how incredible Kanami's writing and this band really is.

Fantastic job Ryan. I´m looking forward to the rest of the album. This band is like a pearl necklace, five perfect works of nature linked by a highly visible thread of friendship and mutual support. In which other band would such a shy genius bassist have developed such a commanding presence and a brand new way of leading this type of rock music with a bass?. Only one in which a shy genius main composer would support her wholeheartedly. All for five and five for one. In short, every day I listen to her music, I marvel at being witness to the birth of a period band. Thank you!.

Thanks for uploading this content. I feel that Kanami wants the score and instrumental CD published so that other musicians can recognize her genius. She puts so much effort into writing parts of the songs that are almost impossible to hear behind the vocals. Of course, MISA is also playing crazy bass lines that are sometimes buried in the mix, even with the vocals removed she is sometimes hard to hear. Akane tends to blast through the vocals, but you can still hear her better on this CD.
What's really f'ing cool is how many of these tracks, with just a little tweaking, could all be stand alone instrumental tracks. I mean, that's crazy!
A thing I love about Band Maid is so many of their songs (and apparently this entire album) can be released as an instrumental and it's still interesting and fun to listen to. It's just so dense and entertaining.
I know they/we all love Saiki, but releasing a whole album without her vocals is this weird "If we could go without 1 member, we all know who it would be..." (I know they would never, but it's still makes me laugh to ponder)
I make a serious job offer to Saiki...to be my House Maid. Save her all that hassle travelling the U.S. 🤞🤞🤞😁

im totally with you on that riff in No God its just so damn good.. with Manners the last part(more rocky fast tempo section) to me feel incomplete without the vocals.. not bad just with the vocals it sounds almost like that part was written with the twin vocals fully in mind as other instuments to make the final sound. but like everyone else i am amazed how good the intrumentals are on their own how much you hear and how often you brain tries to implant the vocals when your listening lol
I read that Kanami does write the vocal melodies too when composing. I would guess Miku and Saiki develop the harmonies...unless Kanami is a control freak 😁

16:50 This is why I always compare Misa-dono to John Entwistle. She plays these great bass lines that just work within the context of the song, go try to replay them, and feel your brain catch on fire from trying to keep up.

I love both the normal and instrumental versions of the album. There is so much more detail in the instrumental version. I wonder if it has less compression or they play with levels/filters on the vocal version to keep from taking away from the singing?
It’s amazing how much more aggressive the guitar sounds in After Life and I Still Seek Revenge without the vocals on top.
This instrumental version, to me comes off even more as a progressive metal album.
Owning both on CD, and listening on traditional hifi gear, I reckon it is a straight vocals-stripped-out instrumental. When played via app, streaming, codec...perhaps quieter instruments have more headroom to get boosted when vocals are absent...changing the mix. It's why I buy CDs...to own the license and have music as intended from the studio (I only play CD once...rip it to lossless FLAC files to stream to hifi...and put on USB drive for the car)
Agreed, on both. I have the CDs, a vintage Hi-Fi and a modern system too. Definitely more fun to play them at a decent volume thru real speakers than e-buds or headphones.
Band-Maid are on their way to become a prog metal band, this is what I've been saying since I've first listened to Unseen World. I'm a former Dream Theater fan boy that converted to Band-Maid when I found them in Februar/March of 2021. BM are more than capable of writing and playing prog metal, and Kobato is more than capable to play at the level necessary, Black Hole live proved that.

The sun is definitely coming out!
No God: This is no longer rock or whatever associated with metal and the like.
This is pure jazz in concept and composition, so reminiscent of the avant-garde jazz of the 70's and 80's that all "purists" denigrated at first before bending on both knees o it later!
This music played by young women? They sound like a bunch of mad men and dogs, before switching to bewitching and forceful womanhood!This is probably why the mainstream Band Maid fans have some difficulty to grasp. I am not complaining, as this will soon become run-of-the-mill pieces for them in a near future! The only problem is that they will force us to pay more attention!

BTW: That interplay of melodies during the bridge of No God is one of the most beautifully crafted music piece I´ve ever heard.

Manners: You finally uttered the word "jazz"! Before that, we could hear first some violin to be followed by the guitars being played like such, and at the very end Miku or Saiki is adding a faint melody behind it all...That is Kanami's composition for you. Like a special signature reminiscent of a famous movie director appearing for a few seconds in every of his films!
This is the very reason we have to listen to them both on CD's and live. Two totally different concepts, both equally enjoyable!
What puts us at a disadvantage is the fact that we have been conditioned by "male" music all our lives from classical to jazz and give a chance to our women to only genres we thought suited them best...
A big middle finger under the noses of ours, men, and I bleeding enjoy it!

Having had the score and CD for a few months, I’ve listened to and digested as much as my tiny mind is capable of. This comment section is gold because clearly a lot of people haven’t heard the tracks before this. Kind of like hearing it the first time again.

The rain has finally stopped!
Warning: One of their rare songs better on video than in live concerts for the simple reason they have to pare it down so much on stage.
It took me some time to appreciate that particular song, but I constantly go back to it as there is just too much to take in in a single listening. This particular reaction of yours opened quite a wide scope.
As for Kanami, you are right, she is properly using a synthesizer, and even a piano at one time. But all the guitars cannot be so thick if Miku does not participate. Now, how much does she do?
A for relentless Akane and Misa this is a typical proof of their dual musical education, that is, classical and jazz.
This song could do very well, and probably better, as an instrumental. It is impossible to stick a label genre onto it. Even the solos are something new.
But the more you listen to it instrumental, the more you have the feeling of a complicated symphony. You only just can come back it again!

Bonjour Robert-Gilles. The rain has stopped in Japan but in France it is slow. Well, as long as the wine is flowing... I appreciate your mentioning the word "Symphony". That's exactly how I see Kanami's way of composing. His songs in UW are so complex and filled with so many little things. Warning should be played with several guitars live. I think the Maids should hire Ryan specifically for their US tour if they're going to play this song. 🤔Amicales pensées de France.
TOOL could have written 12 albums around he "throw away" bass lines that MISA is dropping in each song.
You never realize how much the vocals are a part of their songs, until they're gone of course. Like a totally different song, Incredible.
Thanks Ryan for reacting to Unseen World Instrumental Score. I've read the comments and I agree with most. You said Warning was fast, it's at 195 BPM, so it's quite fast. The layering of Band-Maid's music is astonishing and mindboggling at the same time. BM songs are even more layered than Dream Theater (I used to be a fan of DT), this is why BM won me over to their side. I have the book and the CD, still have not played thru it, but I will do after listening to your reaction. Looking forward to part 2 already 🙂
BTW - I will go to Tokyo in January to see Band-Maid live at Tokyo Garden Theater if the restrictions are lifted by then.

After Life is again a piece of greatness from Kanami and Band-Maid. This record is best listened to in a studio environment or with studio grade headphones. I have a small home studio with reference speakers and can hear all instruments damn clearly. I'm lost for words in describing BM. UW is a masterpiece album composed and played by 5 incredibly talented women from Japan, and I stick with that.
The up-beat (or off-beat) in the drum is what makes "Warning!" sound so punk (or ska) - but there's still this "galloping" to it.
I laughed at your mimed "Get Down!" in "No God." Can't not hear it! I expect it from everybody in the room next October.
In "After Life" you point out how the chords are implied because everyone's doing their own thing. It's like Dixieland Jazz. It's Dixieland Rock and Roll!
Is "Manners" still their most Clutch-adjacent song? It's great how you still get goose bumps all these months later. It's a mystery, isn't it?
After checking out loads of other incredible, talented bands, you come back to bandmaid and find out how different they are. I think Kanami appreciates Misa's creativity/style and lets her do her own thing to come up with the sound that no other bands have.
They were already doing it in Yolo and how the band uses Misa's grungy, funky lines which is completely different from Kanami's...how do they gel those different sounds? Must be Akane doing it.
In a lot of songs the drums and the rythm guitar is the glue, not the drums and bass like in other bands, this is very typical Band-Maid style songwriting.
Don't worry, I have the Squier bass VI too (with labella flatwound strings) and I struggle too - not to play it but to leave my guitar and bass automatisms behind and use it like a different instrument. Remember that even The Beatles mainly used it as a bass (an easier one for guitarists like John and Georges) so ...
Oh cool! I will like it, but for what it costs, I at least expected proper intonation attainable. Not for low E!

After Life: I have the suspicion that Band Maid are simply sneakily taking us to their real concept of music, notwithstanding vocals. One just cannot, should not, may not captivate you to the point of forgetting top-class vocals usually associated with their music!
Talent? More than that! Sheer study in how to catch your listeners and never let them go!
Jazz and avant-garde all over again, even if the video nicely distracts you away with the funny tale of a revolution in the kitchens!

No God is a work of art, and far from the only one on Unseen World. Akane's double bass drum work is so cool in this song, going in and out between single and double kicks. At song #2 we have already established that Band-Maid songs work perfectly fine on their own without vocals. When Saiki's and Miku's vocals are added it makes Unseen World a masterpiece record, all they needed was 2 songs to convince me, amazing composing skills and musicianship from Band-Maid.
I just cant wait for October 19th Phoenix Crescent Ballroom there is a bar at the end of the stage where Misa plays lol!
In Akane's fills, you can feel a sense of rhythm within the tempo going into or out of fills. Feels sooth. I'm not a drummer, maybe it's a measure thing, but she seems to use timing to set up. Maybe that's standard I don't know, but she makes everything sound smooth???? Can't teach creativity, tough to convey I suppose.
I hope and pray you do the rest of this fantastic album!!!!!

Like you Ryan, words fail us to describe everything we hear in Unseen World. I will make some purists scream but this music is like a symphony or constructed as such. It pains me to say this but the voices of the singers partly hide this incredible musical harmony. These musicians are phenomena.
I've heard various explanations to the jazzy outro to Manners. I'm going from memory so I may be wrong here. A few people claimed it is an older Band-Maid track played backwards or slowed down. The reasoning is on the limited edition of Unseen World the first disc is labelled 'Roots' and the second disc is labelled 'Progress'. Manners appears on both discs so yeah, twice on the album. The band said Manners is the bridge from where they came from to where they are going. This might explain an older song at the end? There is no definitive answer as far as I know.
Yes some people have played it backwards, a few said played backwards it still sounds backwards! So who knows? There are Reddit posts about it.
Also about Manners, it was the last song written for the album. Miku wanted to call it 'Rule' but Saiki vetoed that as it sounded too pushy. From Wikipedia it states: 'Lead guitarist Kanami Tōno wanted "Manners" to have a Western feel to it, so she analyzed all the songs that were nominated for Grammy Awards'.
The 'voice' on the outro sounds really otherworldly to me, I love it!
I reversed it (I missed the Reddit posts somehow). It's a female (99% sure it isn't Saiki) singing "I('ve) been thinkin' 'bout you-ou-ou-ou" in what feels like a slightly wonky 3/4. But it sounds chopped and spliced. The cadence and melody are quite different from the chorus in the song of that name by Londonbeat. I think it's the only backwards element in the outro. The voice sounds familiar but I'm probably imagining things.

The up-beat (or off-beat) in the drum is what makes "Warning!" sound so punk (or ska) - but there's still this "galloping" to it.

ヨーロッパのことは言えませんが、ここアメリカでは「選択科目」です。1年生から5年生まではごく基本的な音楽の授業があり、それ以降は生徒がやりたいと言えばやるだけです。バンドに参加することを選択した子供たちのために、それは男の子と女の子の間で約均等分割されている、私は思います。

@@RyanMear 返答ありがとうございます。まさにその通りで音楽に対するアプローチの事です。これは生まれた国の文化的背景だけが原因でそうなるのか、それとも全く違う風土文化で両者を連れて来て育てた場合そこに顕著な違いや差、若しくは傾向性というものが生じるのか という疑問になります。これは大人数でやらなければ統計が取れないので科学的な答えを得ようとすると大変な作業になるのでそこまでするつもりはありません。あくまでライアンさんの主観や感性で答えて頂ければ結構です。再度日本語なので解読変換作業申し訳ないです。

The most important point is the writer is female & all the member. Did you ever heard female band play this kind of music before? Never. Even a male band that can write this kind of music is so marginal.
I don't think that is the most important point. BAND-MAID has made it clear that there is only music to compare. It did not matter the gender
