"This video is not about using our products." It just so happens to be that we have the best sounding drums in the horror genre lol. I had no choice but to buy today. Great video.
5:12 - "not about, hey use our products!" Er, you know what though, I think I will because they're freaking awesome and versatile in every context! I've even used Damage in a house track!
Awesome vibe guys! Love the style of this show! Your attitude is so organic, it's clearly reflected into your products as well :) Keep them episodes coming! And thank you for sharing your story! It is a true honor!
This was awesome. Damn, YT being used for something genuinely interesting and helpful. More of this please! As a matter of fact, give Neil his own channel. ;)
This is cool, look forward to seeing more. Great to see Neil's an ex-metal band musician, nice! (Edit: Not just any band, Annihilator! Damn! That's awesome!) Inspiring to hear how about his journey and how it led to Heavyocity. That studio is amazing. Love Heavyocity, started with Evolve and Damage which blew me away when first released. Now have almost all of your products and will be using them a lot in the next 12 months.
Thanks Neil for this video, I'm new to your channel since I have down/off time due to Corona...You're definitely motivating and inspiring m to push into my composing career! Thanks so much.
Fantastic trailer piece and video from Neil at Heavyocity. And great insight into its construction. Heavyocity's products are incredibly high quality and they are beautifully showcased here, but doesn't feel like a hard sell at all. Love the sound design and custom percussion work, not just using loops. Outstanding work and video showcasing it. Are those Dynaudio monitors and Sennheiser HD600 headphones?
Thanks for the kind words Benjamin! Really appreciate it! The monitors are ATC's, and the headphones are the Sennheiser HD650's. Both of which we LOVE.
Isn't it great to have the latest and the greatest? Yeah Berklee is a great school I played with players from Berklee in the 70's from Boston.Sounds great.
If you're doing both music and sound design, I recommend using two daws unless noted otherwise. If you're working in Reaper, it's good for both music and sound design (I'd use it for game sound design). If you're working in DP, it's usually better to use a separate program for sound design (Pro Tools) unless the cue uses sound design techniques.
This is so awesome! Is there any chance one can download the template for any of your 2 hour cues to have a better grasp on composing? Im a full on heavyocity user btw 😏
Is Atonal Swells (at 10:00) the name of an actual sample library or just your your description of what this sounds are like? No matter, I really like those. How did you make them and with what library?
10:35 does anyone know where to find or how to produce these kinds of unnatural sound effects? I’ve been looking everywhere for how to do it but I can’t find anything.
Nice tutorial proposal. Appreciate. Can you also write me private answer, or comment here, how instruments are routed in this window on right. DAW is by Motu, but does this window is from DP? I'm using Logic normally...
Hi Neil, awesome video! I recently picked up a set of SCM45A's like you have (they're amazing) and similarly to you have to have them on the desk riser... I'm concerned they might be too close to me for such big monitors? Just wondered how you got along with them in that position? Cheers :-)
Hey Craig, thanks for writing in! So, we actually placed them at least a foot away from the wall and the measurements were totaled to help minimize standing waves. We also have the tweeters in an equilateral triangle to our listening position so that when mixing we are in the most ideal spot. Although the monitors are large, they are considered midfield monitors ideal for “critical near field listening” so they work well as a mid/near speaker. Hope that answers your question!
Thanks for taking the time to reply Neil, appreciate the info and confirming they work well at that range. Since I left the comment I've mixed a couple of pieces and had great results so really happy with these beasts! Looking forward to more videos from you.... Cheers!
Hey Bruno! The one on his desk is the Euphonix MC Mix, though Euphonix got bought out by AVID. The AVID Artist Mix is their version of the product. Cheers!
I'm a little confused. Why do you need to bounce that Gravity riser to audio to use the "Punish" knob? Can't you just automate Gravity's punish knob? Am I missing something?
Hey Eric, thanks for writing in! You have a great question...it's actually because our PUNISH effect was inspired by the PUNISH knob in our instruments, but it's actually not identical. PUNISH (the standalone FX plugin) is really a bigger, beefier, and more-tweakable version of the effect that we created in our instruments, with multiple compression and saturation models, transient shaping, EQ, and limiting. Hope that helps clarify for you! Cheers!
Yes, it's not really in any particular key, I used some melody motifs against some atonal beds and textures to make it sound more unnerving. I'm sorta breaking traditional theory rules here, mixing music with sound design, creating tension and energy that just felt unsettling to satisfy the vibe that was needed. -Best, Neil
Do another one where you write a full orchestral Star Wars action cue, because that's where I need help hitting deadlines. ;} Nicely done, but sort of depressing because this type of "wallpaper music"Is the direction that a lot of media is going. I dig all the cool production and stuff, but it would be great if us composers could actually write music instead of dramatic sound design. Again, not bashing your products or what you are doing with these videos, I'm just bashing the entire entertainment industry ;}
What I appreciate about these kinds of episodes is the ‘real talk’. I am always down for coffee time with Neil. Looking forward to these.

This is amazing! I would love to watch more stuff like this! Please keep this series going!

thanks for the tips. I'm an amateur filmmaker who dabbles in audio, so this helped a lot for our film this year. thanks.

Lovin' the 'favorites' template idea for production... thank you, Neil!
Loved your STORY....
Today I understood the difference between Orchestral Music and Sound designing.... THANKS
YOU HAVE AN AWESOME SETUP
These 2 hour cue sessions are amazing!
Dude, you played with Annihilator! That's awesome! \m/

So you got only months to go. Nice.
Heavyocity are the Best!
Glad you posted this video! I work in a very similar fashion. I would even say say identical fashion on this type and similar jobs.
Thanks for sharing. Always good to see how other composers work. Thank you.
Such a great video, super helpful, thank you so much! Love the past 2 videos you guys have published on your channel. Keep up the great content :)
Thanks Neil for this video, I'm new to your channel since I have down/off time due to Corona...You're definitely motivating and inspiring m to push into my composing career! Thanks so much.
That was really informative. Also thank you for sharing your background.
The cue sounds great!

Love me some Heavyocity! And Digital Performer, huh, don't see that one so often...
Great concept - thanks for the video! *thumbs up*

Yeh, that template idea is very helpful for "production"... Awsum!
Is Atonal Swells (at 10:00) the name of an actual sample library or just your your description of what this sounds are like? No matter, I really like those. How did you make them and with what library?
Never mind, I found it. Gravity > Pads > Elements Menu > Atonal - Odd Texture > Snapsots

drinking game---take shot every time he says the words sound design

I don’t trust myself to have my coffee anywhere near my S88

what is the 8 fader box that sits under your monitor? what brand?
Thank you
Bruno
Hey Bruno! The one on his desk is the Euphonix MC Mix, though Euphonix got bought out by AVID. The AVID Artist Mix is their version of the product. Cheers!
#The man who tries to make theses sounds tracks is pretty insane 🖤😑
What patch is that big nasty echoey sound from?
Listening to some Skinny Puppy might help as well.
Curious what metal band you played in after Berklee?
He played in a metal band called Annihilator! :)
Heavyocity Media That’s Rad! I love Annihilator!!! Alice in Hell!!!
Heavyocity Media I’m a metal guy turned composer myself! 😊💪
Does anyone know what library the music box piano comes from?
Hey! It's from AEON Collection >> www.heavyocity.com/aeon-collection
Does anybody know what's the mixer on the desktop???
The one on his desk is the Euphonix MC Mix, though Euphonix got bought out by AVID. The AVID Artist Mix is their version of the product.

Great company and great topic....but please, video has way too many cuts....it's ok not to do that!
Hey Chris! Thanks for the feedback, we'll definitely keep that in mind for future episodes. Cheers!
Thanks for the good info. However, too much quick cutting for a demonstration video. :)
Hey Clay! Thanks for the feedback, we'll definitely keep that in mind for future episodes. Cheers!
What happened to your hair ?
Drums add too much groove, not associated with "spooky"....drums fill in too much where horror music us usually about space.
True... But I feel like there’s different types of horror music for different kinds of horror. Like action horror/ folk horror etc
What monitors are you using? I see genelec monitors. What are the other ones?
They're ATC's! The SCM45's - they're fantastic
Thanks Niel - Great piece and great video. I will be watching it more than once!
