- This is an old VHS rip, sorry for the poor quality. This is for Vintage fans (not only), but the Band rocks! More infos of this recording? Please let me know. If there are any problems with copyright laws, please feel free to tell me. I will delete this video immediately.
Charlie Baty: guitar,
Rick Estrin: vocals, harmonica
Brad Lee Saxton: Bass, background vocals
Dobie Strange: drums
I saw Charlie Baty and Rick Estrin both in 2019 at Mike Ledbetters memorial show at Legends. I sat front row and got too drunk to be in public then went asking for autographs - got one from Rick and I didn’t talk to Charlie but he was in great spirits and played nothing short of how he is in this video. I’ll regret forever not talking to him when he was packing up his guitar. RIP.
I drove by myself 3 and a half hours to the show from Indiana
R.I.P. Little Charlie Baty and thank you for the music
Saw them three times. After seeing them the first time, I immediately ordered seven or eight of their CDs. I’ve seen a LOT of musicians in my 69 years, but I’ve never had more fun than I did each time I saw Charlie and that includes the times I saw Little Feat, James Brown, and Tower of Power. These guys were no frills, no gimmicks just straight up good talented musicians. Unfortunately, too few people even heard of these guys. Thank goodness for recorded music. Charlie is gone, but his playing will never die. And Rick, what a showman. Love these guys. Thank you so much for this post. BIG smile on my face. Thank you Charlie and Rick.
One of the greatest bands to ever walk the Earth. period.
OMG followed the NightCats from these days .. Rick Estrin and the NightCats were up at Blue Frog in Sept 2023 and man they were GREAT!!
It was about a year before this show when I first saw them, have a few pics with them from afterwards. It was fantastic too, at the old Muddy Waters Club in NOLA, uptown on Oak Street! Go Charley Go, surely missed, but wonderful to have this to view, thanks for sharing!
Incredible. Charlie sounds mind-blowing on that strat
This is the lineup I remembered/hearing many times at “The Belly Up” in Solana Beach. Great memories “Fo Sho”. 🥳 Love you Charlie. Love you Rick. Miss you. ❤️
bought these guys 30 years ago at a record fair cause I liked their album covers. glad I bought them. still listening to them.
Little Charlie and that Epiphone are absolutely amazing!!! Funny stpry: I actually had all four of them in my 1980 Chevy Chevette back in about '87 or '88. They played the "Down Home" in Johnson City, TN and my friend Bob and I saw their amazing show. Afterwards, we helped them load up their equipment in their van but the van wouldn't start. So the four of them and the two of us loaded up in that old Chevette and slipped and slid all over town in a bad snow storm to get them to where they were staing the night. . Not only are they master bluesmen, but ordinary guys that I'll never forget. Thank you so much, uploader for the show. It's like going back a few decades.to much better times.
Charlie was truly dangerous on that guitar! I'm surprised they didn't put him on jail--DANGEROUS!
RIP, you are greatly missed.
I saw These guys in Berkely, CA at Larry Blake's R&B Cafe back in 1992-probably same set list as this. Little Charlie became my favorite guitar player after about 30 seconds of watching him play. It was so cool to meet them between sets and buy their CD's right out of a guitar case. They were amazing, fun and brilliant players. After the place closed (at 1:30 AM or so) we came out to see there had been a riot that night. There were riot cops, burning cars and lots of trouble outside. We had no idea inside because the place was rockin'. Rick Estrin is the most unique front man I've ever seen. Just love this band!
Baty was BAD-ASS.
That what-ever-it-was tele mean.
Estrin and his “no hands” harp solos!!
Out of this world guitar playing!
One of the greatest bands to ever walk the Earth! As a matter of fact they're not walking they're floating
My favorite band ever. Very fortunate to have seen them live multiple times. Always tore up eyes like a cat.
Charlie was astonishingly good and Rick was a master harp player and showman.
Saw them in Portland Oregon with Charlie on guitar about 15 yrs ago! They took an intermission to sign autographs in the lobby of the theatre and damn, those guys are down to earth smooth blues cats. Real movers and shakers! The Night Cats were prowling so good that night!!! WOOO!!!!
Great classic Little Charlie. I used to go see them every time they came to Chicago back in the 90's!!! Such a great band.
What's the name of the tune after 'The Booty Song' @ 39:39 ?
Smart Like Einstein. It's on their Captured Live CD from 91.
Thanx Paul... I'm crazy about the way Rick blows the Chromatica on that one.
So... uh... Epic, so dramatica (;-p)
Thank you Mario Hemken for sharing. I wish they have this re-issued on DVD.
LEGENDARY performance by the LEGENDARY performers
Cool band. Saw them in San Antonio at Billy Blues in the Billydome back in the mid 90s.
Maybe my favorite blues bands ever! Fantastic performance. Charlie and Rick and the boys just cook with the gas on high.
Saw them several times in Sacramento and Davis, California, in the early 1980's when a student at CSU Sacramento. Great band, and too little known.
Video is great Mario. Important thing is that even though it's a rip, you have a professionally recorded mix on that film, and it still sounds pretty good. 😀👍👍👍
Charlie was just ridiculous as a guitarist. Incredible.
Saw them on this tour in Tegelen Blues Fest Holland. Best act of the whole day. Ended up meeting them in the US later and Mr. Baty got me into playing hollow body guitars starting with his. Got lots of amp help and tips from. Some he got from Jimmie Vaughan. Cool guys all around.
Superb musicianship, plain and simple, across the board.
Charlie was WAY on top of his game here! Best band line up!
Thanks for sharing. Man, Charlie was on that night!
Estrin is amazing!
always listened to this guy on cd's here in australia during during the nineties, was in awe of his blues rockabilly style
Charlie Beatty played like he was from "mars" this night ...out of this damn world !!!
Fantastic performance. There's a LOT of Little Walter in the guitar, the harmonica and the attitude. But not only are they all great musicians, they are putting on a great show and are entertaining.
You'll never get his style down until you add a sixth finger. LOL
I saw Little Charlie and the Nightcats around this time (I think it was in 1993-1994). They did some of the same sets. It was in Fort Worth Tx. , I can't remember offhand the name of the club.It seems like they had a bass player that had a stand up base. Awesome band ...Hell of a good time! Much respect and I never have forgotten them! Thanks for this!
What wonderful they published on VHS. Talented musicians with great sense of humour. :-D One of the best discoveries I have made in a long time.
These guys got it all together! Great talent and showmanship! Rick and Charlie have such great chemistry together. I'm still studying Charlie Baty videos to learn his style on guitar. Thanks for putting this up....pure joy! Wish I could have seen them in person.
Thanks for uploading this live video! Despite the grainy picture the sound is pretty darn good. You can call this group a lost gem.
Saw this band at a fireworks show one night in north Cal. That's some guitar sparkle, for sure. The sky blew up later, and tomcats yelled across fencetops all over town.

Comedy and blues music, That's a great mix. I even love the name Little Charlie, maybe because I know a hunchback guy named Charlie.
Fantastic Band
Mario, I would love to have a copy of this. I don't even care if it's on VHS. I can convert it. Let me know if you can help a brother out! Oh yeah, and thanks for sharing. This is a spectacular show.

Amazing. thank you!
What maestros
Hey, it's real crazy... I'm sitting in a hotel at San Juan, Puerto Rico and cannot wait to enter my personal blues highlight, the Blues Cruise...
And spend my time watching youtube vids. Was searching for Little Charlie cause I like him so much, found this - and identified the channel owner as a german Blues fan?!? Is it real? I just came here from Berlin, Germany :)
I saw them about 15 yrs ago in Portland Oregon and damn those cats were on fire!!!! You know Little Charlie retired right? Now it's Rick Estrin and the NightCats. I can't believe I got to see Little Charlie, he was so hot that night I couldnt contain myself..... Indescribable and unbelievable.
LITTIE CHARLIE WAILING, HE IS THE REAL DEAL, SEE YOU AT BBKINGS
james brugaletta just saw him and Anson a few weeks ago in Austin
COOL
Top!
Go Charlie go!
9:30 Clothes Line
Best thing about top of the line blues acts is you usually see them at a club where if you dance you can practically shake their hands and on break they will sell merchandise and you can talk to them. Don't get that at an arena show.
live chemistry
What's the name of the tune after 'The Booty Song' @ 39:39 ?
'Smart Like Einstein'
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Are these nightcats the same guys who performed with Little Walter? (Little Walter and his nightcats)
Mario- not sure if you’ll see this. I would like to know if you have any idea how to obtain a copy of this performance. As you know the video transfer was pretty bad. Does the original tape exist anywhere? Thanks!!!
46:17 I'll Take You Back
Does anyone know where this was recorded?
