I'd just like to tell Apostlethirteen that I'm not angry, but I did this video in the afternoon before a show after having been on the road for several weeks playing most nights. I might have been a bit burnt out, but I gave it my best and I applaud Adam for trying to put some working musicians on the net for free guitar lessons in a variety of genres. I feel confident that someone got something from it. I didn't - I did it for free.
One of the most underrated guitar players of all time. Charlie is fabulous......His band is one of the best blues bands to ever perform in my humble opinion, of course...
When I was in grad school at UC Davis in the early - mid 80s, Little Charlie & the Nightcats played around town and on campus all the time. Charlie's guitar playing was amazing, as were Rick Estrin's vocals and stage presence. Lots of great, beer-soaked memories of watching these guys perform.
Little Charlie plays some harmonically sophisticated lines that melt like butter into the overall mix of the band sound. Listeners who haven’t made a study of music theory and jazz harmonies just hear a good blues player. Analytical listeners hear something that goes beyond the usual 7th chord and pentatonic playing of many blues guys. It’s always interesting to hear him play. On a more basic level, he’s a lot of fun to hear, even if you can’t identify a chord as a 13 with a flatted 5th and a flatted 9th. Good video for players looking to expand their comping abilities.
wait 6 people actually gave this a thumbs down?! Wtf are you guys morons ? Charlie is the master of masters- i grew up sneaking into the rathskeller at larry blakes in Berkley when i was under age just to watch him! holy cow i have been hooked on this brother since i was but a we laddie boy of 18 - im 56 now and i am still working on the stuff he did 40 years ago! The Night Cats inspired me to live this Blues. Little Charlie has a compression for composition that is masterful his showmanship is spectacular. And he is the shred master! The Blues is truth!
I'm been waiting for Adam St. James to do something with this fantastic footage for nearly four fucking years, nearly begged him to publish it. Yahoo, now I can watch it and learn. Little Charlie is unsurpassed as an all around blues/jazz player.
Charlie rocks! I've seen him play over 30-times starting '92 when I caught a show in Pittsburgh... Mr. Baty (paying due respect) is an absolute monster on guitar! Every show was as good as (if not better than) the last. I hope I'll get a chance to see him play live again before he throws-in the towel for good! Thanks for the video, Mr. Baty!
Had the great fortune of seeing Charlie perform last nite in Winters at the Palms. Great show. Have always been a fan. His playing is very inspirational! Thanks for sharing your insights!!
In Barney Kessel quarted "salute to Charlie Christian" 1:44 min is excatly same riff. Many solo riffs are same in this song as in that start tune. Look youtube.
Excellent video. I’ve never been able to find a clear copy of this footage though. Does anyone know where I might find it? Ps. I believe Charlie just passed away. Beautiful and intelligent player. He will be missed.
Great stuff, Charlie. Very unique - although I'm reminded of Jimmy Rivers who played guitar beside Vance Terry on the album "Brisbane Bop" in the mid 60's. Jimmy and Vince were at the hard end of everything: western swing, bop, R&B etc.Check it out. Hats off to Charlie.
Little Charlie - great interview! Way over my head, of course, but I'm just learning. I still remember seeing you and the Nightcats play at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach in the mid 90s. Been a fan ever since! For the love of god, please tell us you're still working and where we can catch a show!
i think charly is one of the best electric guitar players in the world..i have thousands of records....igot a feel for guitar, since i play a little,,micro minor leagues..haha..i pay much attention to gtr players....charly is on a league of his own...incredible artist...thnks for showing us some of your magic.
It's funny that, in the interview, Charlie talks about the Charlie Parker influence but the performance shown is full of Charlie Christian lines. If you don't know Charlie C check out his Minton recordings of "Stompin' at the Savoy" and " Swing to Bop" . If you think Charlie Baty is great, then Charlie Christian is off the scale.
Man, that is some kind of hot playing right at the start of this thing....right out of Charlie Christian....Mr. Baty is a fabulous, guitar pickin' dude.....I love cats like him....He's all business...Man, oh, man..
Adam thanks for putting this video together. I've been a Little Charlie fan for years! It's great to see this performance/interview/lesson. Thanks Charle -I was able to steal a couple thangs ; ) Wish I could see you perform again. Did you ever do that solo jazz gtr project?
First and only time I met little Charlie he was like the nicest guy to me! Took me on stage and gave me the run down on his gear and everything! But yeah, he was grouchy it seemed at a lot of their show's
You think someone who had access to Charlie like this would have used a pro video camera, this his horrible video quality, almost useless, what a shame but this is the first time I've seen Charlie actually talk. He always seemed such a grouch at their gigs, almost unapproachable. What an amazing talent, a real guitar hero / craftsman of tone...
I love his playing style. Truly gifted. With that being said... I paid to go see him way back in San Diego at the Blind Melon club (Now 710 Beach Club) and I got there early, got a table in the center front and waited. He came out and started setting up. I walked up and told him how much I enjoyed his playing. He just gave me a look and gave me a psssh. I could understand if I was an over the top drunk idiot but I wasn't. They say never meet your heroes. In this case it wss true. After that I stopped seeing "celebrities" as heroes. Reminds me of when George Lopez met Eric Estrada. Reality is that he's a HIGHLY underrated guitarist and sadly... a complete dick. You could defend him and say the dude might've had a bad day. But I've heard nothing but great things about SRV. Has anyone else had this experience?
I've stole a ton of licks from this! Thanks! But what the heck is that first song? Very cool. I looked up "One Mint Julep" and that wasn't it. Thanks for posting. Great stuff.
RIP THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LITTLE CHARLIE GONE BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

Yes! Seen them multiple times, and had the pleasure to shake his hand and chat a bit. He's the real deal. R.I.P.
God Bless this amazing talent. RIP Charlie Baty.

I use to go to Melarkies on 16th & Broadway in Sacrammento and watch Little Charlie and the nightcats tear it up

Really enjoyed this. Thanks. Charlie's a big talent.
Loved Little Charlie and the Nightcats…! Rick Estren and Charlie Baty BAD TO THE BONE...!
That was at Moondog's in Blawnox!

He mentions Christian at 7:50!!!
Man that is a GREAT guitar!

Definitely uncharacteristic. Seemed approachable and humble in my limited experience.
Very interesting guy !!!
Thanks for posting !!!
Does anyone know the name of the tune that Little Charlie opens this video with? Thanks.
The song is called Topsy.

I've stole a ton of licks from this! Thanks! But what the heck is that first song? Very cool. I looked up "One Mint Julep" and that wasn't it. Thanks for posting. Great stuff.
