I think you missed the point. The lovey dovey moments are intentionally superficial, because the intention of the story is that good stories, no matter how simple, if they are indeed worthy of merit, build bridges between generations. The grandfather is old, the kid is young, and yet the story binds them together because it’s simple, but still so good that it brings the two of them that much closer.

In the book, Inigio is meant to be one of the greatest swordsman around. He’s been out of it and drinking, he beats Westley until they get into super close quarters in the rocks. Westley then *slightly* begins beating him, but in the open he had no chance. It’s amazingly written, you should give it a read.

I find it fascinating to 'talk to' people who've also read the book. A friend showed me the movie right after it came out, warned me the book wasn't nearly as good. I agreed with her. One of the few time the same writer did the book & the movie it generated --William Goldman, known as "the God of screenplays" for many years in Hollywood. I thought the book had too much excess & side plots, but I'm not sure what I'd think if I'd read it first. I'd be interested to hear the good points you prefer in the book.

You are the second reactor who thought of Degoba, nice! Miracle Max is Billy Crystal. Inigo's actor lost his father during shooting, so he sells the emotion of the fight with the six fingered man very well.

I still don't get how so many reaction videos know Andre the Giant and have NOT watched this movie. I've loved this since childhood and have NEVER seen him anywhere else. I know he was a pretty famous wrestler, but seriously... I know WAY more people who have seen this than watched ANY wrestling.

The "problem" with this movie, like many seminal classics, is that it has had such an influence on popular culture (and nerd culture in particular) since it came out that some parts of it now seem almost tired or predictable. Then again, there are certainly worse things than becoming a victim of your own success...

@@stillmagic714 Or me reading Dracula as an edgy preteen. I spent the first quarter of the book scoffing at Harker (and by extension the author) for not noticing (/laying on too thick) all the VERY OBVIOUS SIGNS that Dracula was a vampire, until finally the penny dropped that this was where nearly all those tropes came from. Still makes me laugh to think about now.

Yes, Miracle Max is Billy Crystal. As you pointed out the little boy is Fred Savage who later starred in 'The Wonder Years'. The grandpa is Peter Falk, best know for 'Columbo'. Buttercup was also Jenny in Forrest Gump.
This film is well-known and well-loved enough that many people recognise the 'My name is Inigo Montoya...' line even without context so it is used in other comedy. I have seen a mug with 'you killed my father' with 'you drank my coffee'.

As for the reason why Westley could defeat Inigo, Westley has been training consistently and constantly for five years under and as the Dread Pirate Roberts while Inigo, driven to despair by his inability to find the six fingered man, has been a drunkard for much of the last decade. "When I found you, you were so slobbering drunk that you couldn't buy brandy!"

Why doesn't she recognize him? It has been five years that he's been dead. For five years she has been alone with her memories of him, and after he's been dead for five years and she's been dealing with him being dead she might see someone who reminds her of him, but it isn't the same because she's certain that he is dead.
And with that unpleasant caterpillar of a mustache crawling across his upper lip, he looks different than she remembers. :-D

Tumbling down the ravine (and it is described as a ravine even if the obvious cant of the shot shows it's not quite as drastic an angle as it is shot to be) makes more sense as the walls of a ravine are usually very steep, meaning controlled descents are not always easy to accomplish.
