Mephiles the Dark made one appearance in Sonic 06, a game famous for being one of the worst Sonic games in existence. Since the events in the game were erased from existence, Mephiles never even existed in the first place. So how could he possibly return?

Eggman made a pocket in space and time to create past events. All the characters escaped. Including Eggman. So who's saying Mephiles cant slip out of Crisis City?

there's also the small little detail that Silver, despite being from the same game that retconned itself out of existence, has frequently and consistently appeared in later games

The answer is yes. Their is a way to bring back(the real) Mephiles the Dark. With no cloning or anything like that. And you can thank Sonic Generations. When Elise blew out Solaris: the Flame of Hope, she created an alternate universe where Solaris doesn't exist but the events themselves are locked in a time and space realm they left from. Locked away from the consciousness of Sonic, Elise and everyone (Except Blaze the Cat). That is until the Time Eater opened a space time rift to Crisis City in Sonic Generations. It is absolutely possible that Mephiles could unknownably escape Crisis City to the White Space in Generations and migrated with Sonic's current dimension where he doesn't exist.

Another possibility goes that the ending of Sonic '06 is that because Elise extinguished Solaris' flame, the timeline just resets, with a likely possibility that no one will remember the events that took place. If that's the case, then the the events of Sonic '06 happen within a time loop, which effectively renders Mephiles as a living paradox. Think Eobard Thawne, aka the Reverse Flash.
Tying in events from Sonic Generations (which may be the new timeline you're be referring to) feels like the right call to make. As this may make Mephiles aware of his situation as a living paradox, and break free. Once all is said and done, the ending is left open ended. He still likely has a chip on his shoulder and an axe to grind to take down Shadow (which I believe that he'll likely do first), and he'll likely sow dissent among the people in the new timeline. For all I know, he could essentially do anything he wants.

Another way to look at the love/hate relationship is, and I’ll admit it’s extremely unoriginal in many ways, the relation between Batman and Joker. Both of them loathe each, but in a twist way they complete each other. Joker needs Batman to be whole as both the part of the reason he’s insane, and the few things he finds fun in life (which also includes his twisted sense of humor).

And seriously just because villains are defeated doesn't mean they're going to stay gone for good they always come back. The only way they do stay gone is if they're dead and none of the Villains Shadow Sonic Silver and their friends defeated in The Sonic Series are dead but why haven't they come back? That's impossible because they're not dead
My theory: when Infinite was traveling through history to recruit some of Sonic's past enemies, he stumbled upon a separate timeline. He notices how strong Mephiles is and brings him into the main timeline. However, he brought the Mephiles that just got released from the scepter, because that would be the easiest version of him to keep under control.
Infinite Actually Created Clones Of Past Enemys.. not recruit them.. and the timeline that mephiles existed was erased.. so he cant be found in sonic's History if you dont use the time eater.. -_-

Technically shadow did beat mephilies when he took out his rings. Plus we haven't seen sonic truly fight mephilies because he killed sonic using a sneak attack
He didn't. Mephiles used all that as a distraction which Shadow fell right into. After Shadow appeared to have won Mephiles appeared somewhere else entirely to distract Sonic with a chaos emerald and kill him.

Shadow sealed Mephiles 10 years ago and was always meant to do so, but there is one problem with that.
Shadow was still asleep in Prison Island during that time, it makes no sense.
If you say Sonic 06?not a reboot, then Shadow must of woke up for 40 years went to Solianna help the duke seal Mephiles away and then went back to his sleeping tubes for 10 years where Eggman woke him up for the events of Sonic Adventure 2

@@FrostTheHobidon Other than bad writing, you could argue that this timeline iteration is not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
The best example is that both Silver and Blaze came from the future to fix the past. Since they are from the future, any intervention that they have to the past means they are making a new timeline from then on.
Same thing when Shadow and Silver when further back to origins.
Now, depending on how you think Time travel works, can depend on how things would actually play out. I'm running on the idea of anchor points in time, where if you go and kill your young 20 something grand father in the past, and then go back to your time, Nothing has changed to you or your 70 something grand father who's still being a $#%¤. But the past will now run a time where some rando(you) killed your grand father and that will play out as if everything is normal, your parent and you will not exist in that time.
Before the game's timeline that we play, there probably was one that the two never came to the past, practically granting Mephiles an easy win to all this charade, with the minor inconvenience of not being able to fuse with Iblis.
Before that, he probably had to figure out, with little foresight, on how to get to Iblis. Maybe princess carrot legs death acts like a powerful containment cell that he couldn't breakthrough, and Iblis would essentially be locked until he grew to a state to not only be free, but also unable to fuse.
He probably found the best direction was through shadows intervention on accident. So multiple attempts with that must have showed the best type of results, making his obsession on shadow like a key to an unorthodox piece to an elaborate puzzle.
This still doesn't explain away the broken game or shotty writing.
But yeah, Time Travel stories are bull shit when used sloppily, their just a bitch when done right.
Maybe because shadow is one of the most powerful characters in the whole franchise

My take is this :
Just before Solaris was defeated Mephiles tried to escape from his body and painfully succeeded . The part where Sonic and Elise blew out the flame was actually an illusion made by him. Then Sonic and Elise were locked in another dimension filled with clones replacing the normal characters.
This would explain Shadow suddenly becoming an edgelord, Tails being a fraidy fox, Knuckles becoming dumb and Rouge becoming useless

YESSSS!!!! I want this guy to make a comeback!!!! I'm sickin' tired of seeing Eggman as the main villain over and over again. I miss the days in which Sonic battled lovecraftian horros like Perfect Chaos, Solaris and Dark Gaia. Bringing back Mephiles would improve the series A LOT!!!😀

When the timeline continues after Solaris is erased, Silver is still born. Crisis City could be Soleanna, and maybe is. Silver is still born there, just at a different timeline. Yes, it's a timeline fracture in a timeline fracture.

I actually love '06, it uses elements that I really wish they'd not abandon just cause it doesn't get well received, the big one being, NOT PLAYING AS JUST SONIC.

This could actually even fit in the 06 timeline.
After the events of Shadow The Hedgehog, the 'goo' was splattered around the Earth, one part of it wounded up fusing with Iblis' core and form the flame of Solaris, while the other 'goo' simply got absorbed by the Earth and eventually reached Dark Gaia's dormant state, which made it easier for Eggman to unleash it over the world (I still find it weird how a Dark God can be woken up by one beam from the Chaos Emeralds).
And after Dark Gaia was defeated, the goo again rose to the surface and remained in that state until GUN found it.
In the timeline where 06 didnt happen, the same thing happens except the 'goo' never reached the core of Iblis.
Hell if they bring him back i wouldn't minde a remake of his story mephiles is my only favorite villains in sonic but i honestly like the part of a time god backstory but the defective clone would be interesting
Honestly if Mephiles came back I'd think they'd have to do it Dan Phantom style, with Mephiles existing outside of time itself, but Mephiles and only Mephiles is able to return where Iblis is left to oblivion. This gives Mephiles a reason to return because much like Cell, Mephiles was robbed of his true form, and would attempt to systematically hunt down and destroy those responsible.
If I'm being real if Mephiles was advertised as the main villain of a new 3D Sonic game, regardless of his VA, I'd pre-order that shit even if the game was a buggy mess, because Mephiles is the ONLY Sonic Villain to ever make me cringe in nervousness and anticipation for a battle.

I think Mephiles saying to Shadow "your powers are limited" that he is talking about Inhibitor Rings. Shadow knows that and then realise that removing them will unlimit his powers. And thus making the most epic scene in Sonic history.

*Mephiles could be a paradox.* Think about it, the timeline may have been reset, but there’s still reality out there where ‘06 happened. You can’t erase history, you can only rewrite it. (Or at least in the Sonic series.) It’s been said that sonic, silver, and shadow have very vague memories of the events Sonic ‘06, so that means they haven’t completely wiped out... unfortunately... so Mephiles could just come from another timeline

Personally I think sonic team should do like a redo of sonic 06. Same characters, same locations, but they fix the story and gameplay to replace the original 06 as canon.
my back story for mephiles is that Dr Gerald robotnick created a failed shadow along with the biolozard but mephiles escaped
Here's an idea, instead of changing his origin, Sega can do what they did with Shadow in Sonic Heroes, have Mephiles get resurrected by an evil genius like Eggman, and if the new game he appears in turns out to be a sequel to Sonic Heroes and Sonic 06, they can have Metal Sonic developing a new form while going rogue again, and the two villains can even join forces with each other at an attempt to destroy everyone.

Mephiles could just pop out of ANY timeline (depending on how SEGA sees timelines - as just one string, so that when one thing is changed it IS definitely changed; or as many strings, so that if you would go back in time and change something you would just create a new string, a new timeline but the old one still lives on). Pretty cool reimagining of the character's backstory. Didn't quite like him to begin with as he was yet another "hedgehog" looking dude. But revisiting now, he is a good villain.
an idea i came up with one time for how mephiles could come back would be a game focused around silver, where silver and mephiles somehow survive the timeline getting rewritten but mephiles is in a more broken state. both get flung into different points in time, and while fighting off mephiles silver has to warn the other characters about mephiles because all their memories of sonic 06 were erased. this could allow mephiles to come back and could also allow silver to come back without the future needing to be ruined for it to make sense in the story, silver technically isn't supposed to exist in the current timeline, so it doesn't really matter what point in time he goes to.
also from silver's perspective this story would take place directly after sonic 06, and then at later points he would travel back in time for things like sonic colors ds and sonic forces, despite those games chronologically taking place before this.
silver surviving the timeline being rewritten could be explained away by the combination of his psychic powers and him being in a super form at the time.
In all honesty, they could say he events seen Sonic 06 never happened, therefore Solaris was never erased. It could happen

mephiles and solares were successfully erased from existence but Mephiles being the intelligent time traveler he is had a back up plan in case solarus fell.
Before sonic was killed mephalis was almost defeated but he started making a plan B first he cloned him self and hid it in the past, then killed sonic to awaken ibles and become solares after solarus fell the clone awakened as mephilus planed but with out the host the clone was unstable and became the time eater.
I belive if my thearys currect mephiles can return once hes regained his power and intelligence that was lost with solarus and the host.

Also if you think about it the sonic 06 silver timeline returned in sonic generations, meaning it is possible that mephiles could return without having to change his back story
i think an idea would be that due to the phantom ruby's existence this would be a perfect time to wrap some things together
for example an idea would be to have the phantom be a "fail safe" for solarises destruction,this would make sense with the powers that the phantom ruby holds (time manipulation,reality warping,meshing the past to the present ,able to make clones of different people [before you say the phantom ruby was destroyed,no the phantom ruby remakes were destroyed the phantom ruby was sent back in time as shown in Sonic mania plus])
In my opinion Mephiles and Zavoc are REALLY underrated characters because SEGA waisted SO much potencial of them and I really liked them

I think that bringing back Mephiles as "G.U.L.F." a.k.a another Shadow clone is a dumb idea. It isn't necesary for him to look like Shadow when in the curent Soninic storyline he can take form and cooperate with someone who will share his destructive nature, like Infinite for example.
Hey Sega, if youre reading this: DO THIS PLOT!!!! Not only would you bring back a villain that is both awesome yet terrifying at the same time, but would also possibly show more of the Black Arms as a whole, i.e. how they came to be, culture, etc. Lord Danny, I bow to you for this wonderful idea fpr Mephiles' return!!!

I mean, I can think of ONE WAY that Mephiles could still exist. It’s worth pointing out that each timeline has it’s own separate, alternate timeline. What if Solaris still existed in a different timeline, and somehow made it into Sonic’s current timeline? I know this is basically pulling a Trunks, but it would still work.

My brother once told me a great theory he had. His theory was that in the Sonic universe, when things are erased from existence, they go to the a place Infinite claimed he made, but in reality, was a place in between time; Nullspace. He then said he believes Infinite is Mephiles’s servant, and is trying to get him out. And finally, he says Mephiles even created the phantom ruby itself, in order to control Infinite’s mind, the only reason he lost in Forces is because despite controlling Infinite’s mind, he couldn’t control his ego, and at the end when Infinite escaped, it was because Mephiles was summoning him… to punish his servant for disobeying. I really like this theory, and I hope something similar happens in a future game.
A plot twist that would actually kind of make sense that if Infinite is Mephiles.
If Shadow 2 or when the next Modern Sonic game happens and Ian Flynn does the story, I think Mephilis should be the main villain and have a good explanation on how he's back.

I feel like because of Crisis City in Generations, the Time Eater theory, and his mini-appearances, hopefully he will have a grand return in a future game. Mephiles' crystalline form freaked me out because the only thing I remember from him is when he took out Sonic. The hardest thing about his portrayal would be trying to get Dan Green back.

He could have the same backstory but we have to change the events in 06. He could have travelled forward in time to escape his death then he could come back in an unexpected game in 2023 or 2024

He apparently got Zavok, Chaos, Metal sonic and Shadow on his side, dispite two of which currently inactive and one sided with Sonic. It's possible that Infinite's power spreads to creation of clones, including Mephiles and other dead characters, such as Black doom, the other Zeti and Gemerl, just to name a few. But, like I said, he's a mystery. Maybe he can create characters that don't exist, or maybe it was some sort of machine made by Eggman (he could probably do that, he created the Egg Colossi, but that could possibly be covering them in indestructible plating) that revives beings and another device that can control minds.
There's another possibility. The Shadow that we see in Sonic Forces could actually be Mephelis, It's pretty easy for Mephelis to disguise himself as Shadow considering that He is A clone of Shadow, and why would Shadow be evil? He's been on the same side as Sonic for awhile now. Or I may be completely wrong.
Tavan Radke that could happen, but "mephlies" has no mouth and other unique aspects. However, it may be possible he just looks like shadow from a distance slash he's disguised.
What about Iblis?
Storyboard Mephiles the Dark is my favorite Sonic Villain character he's way better than Dr Eggman and he should return for real and for good in the new Sonic games.
After all because nothing can stop him from coming back after all no defeated villain stays gone or defeated for long they always find a way to bring themselves back.
The way I see it from a Story perspective is that even if the events of Sonic 06 were erased from existence, Solaris was not. Solaris is a God, and you can't erase a God from existence because they made existence. And since Solaris is a God of Time along with Fire, he would remember the events of the 'erased' reality and would be VERY angry and want revenge, however, he did not go unchanged. In this new reality, Solaris never existed instead it was Iblis God of Fire and Mephiles God of Spacetime. Since Mephiles remembers the events of the 'old' reality he now seeks revenge on the hedgehogs who cost him his victory.
From a SEGA Executive standpoint though, the one I'm not a fan of but is more likely, they're not going to touch any concepts or characters introduced in Sonic 06 with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole. The sole exceptions being Silver coming back to at least story relevance in Forces, though that's debatable, and Crisis City coming back for Generations.
I'd love to see Mephiles return in the future but if they do they'll either have to make a new backstory, alter his existing one, or keep the existing one and use a variation of the God of Spacetime explanation I gave. I rewrote 06 so that Mephiles, out of pure rage induced insanity, interfered with the reset and recreation of reality and is implied that he's still out there. Don't know if I succeeded in the implication bit though but that's what I tried to do and confirmed it in a Silver focused story I wrote.

Makes quite sense but technically, the Solaris that's fusion of Iblis and Mephiles isn't the Solaris kniwn as a God in Sonic 06, it's a project led by Duke Of Soleanna that just named after Solaris. That's also why even though Solaris was erased from the Sonic ymtimeline, Soleanna still existed. Silver was re-introduced in Sonic Rivals and the current one we have is Silver from that game who had almost the same story but with a difference. If they want to bring back Mephiles, that could also be a chance.
I have heard of this one theory that The Time Eater is Mephilis. I feel like it would be a cool concept.

Mephlies has this case file: A powerful demon who's related to a god. Mephlies originated from an incident in Soleanna labetory. He was originally planned to control time for good deeds. However when the accident occurred, his mind was corrupted by Hate and Rage and became what you see to this day. Mephlies looks just like our lovable sonic characters however has no nose no mouth and no feet and has crystal skin. The only way to help him turn the side of good: Reincarnation!

I think Mephiles totally could come back. Sure, Solaris was blown out and erased, but here's some food for thought. Does Solaris' erasure apply to ALL possible timelines, or just this one? Perhaps, Mephiles (and, by extension, Iblis) still exist in an alternate timeline. I imagine that, if Mephiles returned, the explanation could be that he somehow learned how to travel BETWEEN timelines as opposed to between multiple points in one timeline. (Time travel's weird, OK? That's no secret.) Who knows? If anything, just put him in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle on mobile already!

If they ever make a sequel to Sonic Unleashed, Mephiles' design could be used as Dark Gaia's avatar, awakening early due to Eggman's actions in the first Sonic Unleashed and trying to build up it's power to kill Light Gaia/Chip once and for all. Heck, we know that it caused/absorbed Sonic's Werehog form and that it draws power from the darkness within the Chaos Emeralds, justifying it looking like a both a monstrous regular hedgehog and a monstrous crystalline hedgehog.
I wish Shadow could meet Mephiles the Dark again for future Sonic the Hedgehog video games.

You made some good points and I love that backstory but honestly I think that Mephilis is infinite from what Sega said we've seen infinite before and besides he's my favorite villain but even if he's not infinite the way to bring him back would be your back story you need to go take that to Aaron Webber or Sega or whoever is in charge of Sonic
Mephiles and Iblis probably could be black arm minions who take revenge for Black Doom with the same memories but no longer can control time and the flames. Or maybe, he could be Black Doom's Son!
It just doesn't make sense because you defeat Solaris. Mephiles couldn't come back. The flame of Iblis was blown out and then you never see mephiles again after the boss fight. I don't think Sega should bring him back. Also if he was a part of Shadow the hedgehog then it would only make sense if they made a Shadow The Hedgehog 2 to follow the story. Without bringing Shadow as a main story in the game it just wouldmy make much sense to the sonic franchise. Still this is just my opinion
Personally I liked 06 more than Unleashed (Which was far more enjoyable than the parody game Sonic Generations!) 06 had an epic story I wouldn't want to just dismiss. What I don't understand is why blowing out the candle from 1 timeline would automatically mean that Solaris could never return, here me out Solaris could quite easily still be alive in an alternate timeline. Even if Solaris was weakened by being removed from Sonic's Timeline, part of it could have escaped like the Time Eater theory suggests. However suppose 1 of the timelines we have now that the Solaris Experiments were repeated 10 years later wouldn't Mephiles & Iblis have the chance to be created once more?
A New Backstory isn't necessary to bring back Mephiles & Iblis. That being said your alternate backstory seems similar to Eclipse from the Archie Comics, as Eclipse is a 2nd Ultimate Lifeform created by the Black Arms to deal with Shadow. Anyway there's this theory that the Phantom Ruby from Mania was actually part of Solaris. It could have either survived 06 or been the device used to seal away Mephiles from another timeline, then it later fuses with a Mobian to become Infinite. What do you think of my thoughts on how Mephiles could return?
I Have an idea for how the character could be introduced in a new game, not saying it WILL happen, just saying that this is what I think would happen:
After the first level of the game (most likely green hill) Sonic and Tails are seen running across the place for a bit after. "Man, this place is really nice" Sonic says looking around, "Eh, I've always found it more on the bland side of things considering it's just a field" Tails responds, Looking at his weird tablet thing from colors. "Hey at least there isn't sand everywhere" Sonic says probably referencing forces. They continue walking a bit before finding Shadow and Rouge holding something in a strange abandoned castle it seems. "Hey Shadow, long time no see!" Shadow and Rouge turn around to see Sonic and Tails approaching "Oh, it's you. Do you think you could maybe leave me and Rouge alone for this, we found something that seems kinda.....mysterious." Shadow says responding to Sonic. Eagerly, Sonic runs over to Shadow and Rouge to see what it is. A sorta, scepter, it seems. It looks like it's containing something that looks like darkness.
Then, out of nowhere, Eggman pops up, "oh ho ho, it seems you four have found what I've been looking for!" Sonic and the gang jump up at Eggman's sudden appearance "Why would you be looking for this, doctor?" Shadow says, slightly holding the scepter up. "Well that's for me to know, and for you to find out" Eggman says in response. "Well, why don't you go moto-bug someone else ay Egghead?" Sonic would say, clearly making a pun. "No can do Sonic, I need that Scepter of Darkness for my great plans!" Eggman says, gesturing to himself in a sorta "I am the best!" kinda way. "Robots, Attack!!"
Suddenly, Motobugs, Buzz Bombers, and Caterkillers start to approach the gang, clearly going after the Scepter, Sonic and friends fight most of them off till a Buzz Bomber shoots the scepter out of Shadow's hands and yoinks it, handing it to Eggman. "Hey Egghead! Give that back!" Sonic would say, Jumping on multiple badnicks to get to Eggman, who is already flying away. Sonic eventually hits Eggman, Causing him to drop the scepter. "N-n-n-n-NO!" Eggman Exclaims. Shadow tries to run over and grabs it, but he is too slow and the Scepter hits the ground, breaking. Eggman would command his robots and get them to retreat while everyone else goes over to the Scepter, looking at it ooze darkness from out of it. Suddenly, the darkness shoots up in a way similar to how it did in 06, With it hitting the ground and morphing into a cloud of Smoke. Upon Seeing Mephiles, Everyone would take a step back, with Sonic exclaiming something like "Shadow, did you just clone yourself?" With Shadow looking a bit, confused.
"Oh Sonic, You are such a fool. Let me introduce myself, I am Mephiles, and Since you've released me, I will grant you one wish (in reference to Shadow's introduction in SA2) However, this wish cannot be about possessing a new item, just to let you know." Mephiles explains. Sonic starts out by saying "I wish for-" Shadow cuts him off saying "I wish to see what Eggman's plan is." Mephiles would slightly tilt his head up and look at Shadow. "Very well, though I won't take you to the specific time of now, I will take you into the past to see what Eggman is planning." His little time travel orb thing happens "Hopefully, it brings you good use, as you will only be there for 10 Minutes. Good luck to you four." Mephiles would then do his signature laugh as all 5 of them teleport to the past (with a little more effects than 06) launching you into the 2nd level of the game.
My backstory is this
(If a game qith Melphesis happens again Shadow NEEDS to be the main character in order fo my storyto make sense all the way.)
Melphesis was erased.. but he created a backup plan if he died of any cause. So he made the time eating monster in Generations it destroyed parts of the timeline and sampeled old ones like the 06 timeline. When it revived the sample timeline Melphesis was brought back. When the time eating monster died... Melphesis survived because of the White Void when Robotnic and Egg man survived...
He put ideas in both of their heads so they can make an escape route without Melphesis being detected.
Years pass
Melphesis finds Shadow and enters his mind undetected.. he put thoughts into his mind corrupting his mind about Maria, GUN and past timelines by talking through his shadow (reason why he has Shadows form.) Shadow would be absorbed by these thoughts and attack Tails and scream "06" while Shadow is crying. Melphesis (black goop form) would come out of his eyes and mouth and turn into Shadows form. Melphesis would say "Again with this world..." Melphesis would teleport out with something beyond chaos control while leaving Shadow weakened.
... Mephiles... his name is Mephiles...
So here's my idea for Mephiles coming back to the main story, or if Sonic 06 gets a remake (Which I hope), so here's a couple of my ideas:
First: Mephiles wouldn't be included in the remake, but a substitute character would be take his place.
Which it would spare him an opportunity to stay present in the main Sonic timeline. Instead of being erased. So that he'll just have a different story.
(The second one makes a whole lot a of sense)
Second: He'll stay present in the timeline, but this is how: He'll be in a project that would involve Solaris, but instead, Mephiles would be a part of a whole different project that would be so secretive that none of the Sonic characters, or even Princess Elise wouldn't known about.
His is about separating Solaris which would be the secretive one, and can easily be confused with the actual Solaris one. So basically the main event of the game.
The Solaris project, is the actual time travel, or the candle. Which this is the actual Solaris project and the one Princess Elise would get mixed with, because of (Insert Reason here). So if she erased that project accidently instead of Mephile's project, Mephiles would see another day, and still encounter Shadow and Silver for what ever reason.
So the story would technically be erased, due to everything being so different without the Solaris Project, but Mephiles would still be alive because his is still present.
Third: He'll just be a different piece of Solaris, one that no one knew. Including Eggman, and Elise.
But this is hard to tell why he takes a form of shadow or a different Hedgehog, so I'll leave that to you Guys/Gals.
