I remember when he was with the Spurs, game 4 of the '95 Playoffs vs the Lakers. He had a wide open shot that would have sealed the game (they were up by 3), and he completely bricked it. He's not a very clutch player. Van Exel shoots a 3 at the other end to send the game to overtime. Then Van Exel hits another 3 to win the game.
Doc Rivers was a decent player, but not very clutch. Also have memories of him playing for the Clippers. He had a couple of good years in Atlanta with 'Nique.

Never seen a more animated reaction from an opposing teams bench. It was a weird circumstance because the Celtics were gunning for Bird to break McHale's record and Bird was throwing up absolutely absurd heat checks and making them. It was a perfect storm and you had to hand it to the guy. Basketball, relative to other sports, is also an art form. Yeah, "hick" don't mean stupid. Larry kept it real by constantly challenging himself and his teammates with the trash talk and bravado. He'd never let himself look like a fool by not backing up his talk and led his team by example whether it was scoring, passing, rebounding, diving for a loose ball - whatever it took. Also, took his opponents' heads apart psychologically since he didn't have the highest physical skills (he did have considerable skills, though). Almost unbeatable when young & healthy.

Larry was an intellectual prick. By that I mean he used to jog around the garden watching the other teams train to gain an advantage and remind them who they were playing. Players before him or after didn't have the psychological knowledge that the great man had.

Well it's a particularly funny circumstance where you have this total hick talking trash before doing what he said he was going to do. Nobody has ever done that like Bird has; before or since. Toss in the token race crap and it makes it even funnier.

What was it that Charles Barkley said once, "God made Bird slow and couldn't jump just so it would appear to be fair to the rest of the NBA players" or something like that, or "so they would think that they may have a chance against him"

  • @denniscasey284

It's impossible to compare them if they didn't play against each other in their prime. Of course then there's Baylor West and Oscar and probably 30 more who should be included in the great category. But who's counting.
