Falls Of Lora on a full flow SpringTide

  • I have been through the Falls of Lora many, many times in the past. However I never tried it when it was running on full flow on a spring tide. I always assumed my Inflatable boat would have too much drag and not enough power to get up the fast flowing waters. Now I have a small RIB I thought it was time to give it a try … and it managed fine ..just :-D

    How did I miss this video. Wow, it looked nerve-wracking. I remember you talking about it when I met you. Thanks Stephen 👍

    Pretty exciting. Thanks. I'd thought that I'd been lucky when I happened to stop to see the spot. Now I can see I arrived on a green day. So I guess I'll have to go back some day. There were some kayakers, river/surf kayaks, playing under the bridge on the north side. One guy got flipped and had a lot of trouble. It seem far more intense than it looked. His friends towed him ashore, recovered his 'yak and paddle. So the 3m dinghy on my sailboat with the 7.5 hp outboard.... I'm glad I found out watching the video.

    Having watched this film about 18 months ago I could see it was a hard challenge, due to I have years of white water experience in a kayak under belt , would have love to run it in a kayak years ago. So with great delight I got to visit Loch Etive today which was wonderful seeing the mountains with a snowing covering , Much to my delight I got to see the falls of lora in a similar flow as per video, The Skill with Donnys timing is not to be under estimate, these falls look hard close up . I've done the meni straights which is a challenge also. But these falls take skill and experience. Was amazed too see big boils of water in the eddy lines come out of know where. Take my hat to Donny doing them with 25hp engine, hopefully back later in the year to get on Etive myself.

    Great info Donnie I would of thought your 25hp would of had no problems with that, these things teach me to be more careful than I think. Me only having a 9.9 four stroke tells me I may have drowned. The more I watch you the more I can see me being less stupid and stop thinking I’m instruct-able. Thanks for sharing Ray K UK. YNWA.

      It was a delight..and something I wanted to do for a while. Im just sorry I didn't mount the rear camera on the boat as I went backwards.. at one point I was aware of water coming over the stern as a white wave washed it..it would have been good footage :-D

    Have dived the Falls (but not on Springs). Was like being in a washing machine. Interesting rock formations and gullies and a heck of a down current when you fly over the sill at the bridge. Another good one but not as deep or as fast or turbulent are the narrows at Loch Creran.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 года назад +1

      Hi DiveRIBOrca ..yes Im familiar with the Loch Creran overfalls too. I don't go there much in the boat now but sometimes sleep in the car in the lay by under the bridge ..if its too late to drive home

    Hi Donny, if we wanted to launch our ribs on Loch Etive, where should we put in, is there somewhere we can do that with a car+trailer? Also, are there tide restrictions for launch (I know there are for the falls themselves) Cheers.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  3 года назад

      Hi FishmOnster ..you can beach launch at Kelly's Pier , Taynuilt. Boats like Warrior 175 etc go in from the beach and its solid for driving on... even down to low water mark. Best 2 hours before or after high tide as it gets shallow quickly. You can also launch Dunstaffnage Marina if you want a slip and car park for a few days Think its around £50 for a week parking plus using the slipway ? .or even use the public slip at Ganavan sands but the council now charge £7 per day car park fee there. You can get a RIB through the falls at any time as the channel under the south side is about 30ft deep ..but keep to the south side close to the bridge support ..the reef is in the middle of the bridge. Any other info ..just ask
