FIXES AND UPDATES: Just use the correct version of Blender and everything should work. I was on v2.93 To everyone having issues with the textures turning into one color (one texture) when create a material atlas (in Blender), try using the same version of the VRM Add On that I use in this video (2.1.11). OR before doing the atlas you can unpack the files by going to File > External Data > Unpack all files (Thanks tucker in the comments for finding this). If you're having issues (like with eye tracking), then before hitting Fix Model, click the wrench and disable "Keep Upper Chest." Then continue to edit the model as usual (not sure if this breaks something later on, but someone said it worked for them). If you're having issues installing the material combiner plugin, make sure you downloaded the correct files. On the download page it explicitly says to download NOT from the assets section, but from a link in the CHANGES description. For a lot of issues, make sure you're on the right version of blender and start over with a brand new project. Make sure you're following the tutorial EXACTLY. Fixed a problem. If your avatar imports into Blender fully colored and when you click "Fix Avatar", the eyes turn white, just do the wrench and uncheck "Combine Same Materials". This should fix that problem (and hopefully not cause others). Also make sure you're using BELOW version 2.16 of VRM cuz 2.16+ is not compatible with the material combiner and causes all sorts of issues with atlasing.

I can't wait for the next part. I spent a stupid amount of time toying with the thing in VRoid. Then, with blender here, I was able to fix sooo much I didn't like. Like, I gave myself the duck-footed stance I have in real life hahaha.
Try going onto editor and click the neck bone, then click the bone image on the right of your screen and it should say neck, and you should see a thing called relations, your gonna wanna click on that, and if it says the bone is parented to upper chest, your gonna need to change that to chest. Hopefully this wasn't too confusing and helped lol
Also if you need to reduce more polygons you can remove some of the skin under the hoodie and pants by deleting the vertices. You would not need it anyways on a quest avatar
I have some problemes with the VRM plugin it doesnt show me anything on blender ( I found out that working with unity is easier so idk it works for me better)
hello if anybody is having problem witch merging all textures together you need to downgrade your VRM to version 2.15.26 and downland material combiner addon dev build and remember save Vroid avatar to 0.0 not 1.0
3:53 for anyone else who got the following error: Eye tracking will not work unless the bone hierarchy is exactly as following: Hips > Spine > Chest > Neck > Head Furthermore the mesh containing the eyes has to be called "Body" and the armature "Armature". If you were also unable to solve by repeatedly clicking, I was able to fix it by creating the Neck's parent bone to the chest. For some reason it was set to upper chest.
You need to go into Edit mode on blender which can be found at the top left, you're usually defaulted to Object mode, go to click on each bone to find the Upper chest and delete that one. It will automatically set the chest to the parent of everything else and ya should be good to go. Can't explain too well but hope this helps everyone c:
Issue that I ran into that I was able to figure out: When you go to Atlas, it may say "Install Pillow". Go ahead and install, then restart blender. If it still just shows "Install Pillow", just hit that again, restart again, and the option to generate materials should be there!

I am having trouble getting the "Add-Ons" added to my Blender, I keep getting an ERROR for the cats plugin and the other two wont add on or at least I cant find them to check them off. A little help please?
Try downloading the other files from the githubs, i had the same problem so i downloaded every file i could from each page, ran blender as administrator then tried every single one, eventually one of each worked, hope this helps…

Hey y'all! If you have already changed to an older version of VRM and the Material Combiner still isn't working, try using a slightly older version of the material combiner. That fixed my issues!
I hit a bit of a road block, whenever I tried save atlast the entire model and textures just break and disappear, I even downloaded VRM 2.1.11 but it does the same thing. Do I gotta restart the entire thing? Edit: Had to restart the blender process, it works fine now
im a bit stuck with the same issue only I think I now have the correct atlas combiner, but now it wont even let me use the activate the correct add on. :( So when you say restart do you mean completely reinstalling everything or going back to step one of importing the vrm file for the avatar?
@@2xenos1 I just simply deleted all my progress after installing the correct VRM version, closed out of blender and reopened it, and did everything again from importing the vroid model to exporting it after I was finish with the blender process, I'd probably double check the addons just in case if they were uninstalled or were unchecked

1:41 I've downloaded Blender 2.93.8-windows-x64 and updated versions of each add-ons. Everytime i go to install the zip file into blender nothing happens. I even looked up their names in the blenders search bar and did not find my add-on. Because of this i can not import my vroid model.
17:35 this does not work for me. I already tried the VRM + Materual Combiner Addon posted here and different versions but "save Atlas to..." does not work. It just removes all and applies the hair texture to the whole body. No window opening to select a save folder.
I still have to test this but when looking it up, it appears that there's one optimization fix that brings the polygons down MASSIVELY. Select your body armerture, go to edit mode, click and drag to select all of your model then in the "Face" menu, click "Tris to Quads"
For anyone on quest or anything at that trying to keep the model looking good but the decimation process is too tedious, to get consistent results, use smart decimation and set it to 14000.
I'm only having one problem and I'm confused if I'm the only one but The addon "Shotariya's Material Combiner" won't let me check the box, it keeps saying "Traceback (most recent call last)" and "ModuleNotFoundError: No module named "material-combiner-addon-2" Is there any way to fix this?
Several issues; Fix model does not load the textures properly, atlas compiles the material into one but has the model white in Unity, re did everything and still nothing, even though I'm back tracking to fix it.

Personally i am fairly exsperianced with blender and have many hours in photoshop so am naturally quite pacient and ellimante and test problems until somthing works. However I only have just now stupidly seen that you should use the older VRM Addon and it has vixed my issues, I think this may be the main cause for most negative comments. I tried that materials thing with the atlas btw and it just straight up broke my avatar. I believed you when you said it would look normal in unity, it didn't... I had to come back here and re-blend my avatar from scratch, luckily I had only made a few minor changes in blender in the first place.
@@karma3574 First I made my avatar with 11 materials as I thought I had no choice, but then when I realized my avatar was definitely a bit too tall (probably over 7 foot) I decided to go back through the process right after I finished choosing my avatar's appearance in VRoid. I noticed you could change the materials right there in the export menu, and instantly tried going to 2, I was amazed when it worked just fine. Definitely was tedious having to remember literally everything you said to do in this and the next episode, and I did have an unexpected problem I managed to fix before making a test build and calling it quits for the day when it was practically perfect.
When I combined materials my avatar looked gray and plaid with no color. Then when I moved into Unity, I was unable to extract textures. Any ideas how to fix this, I’ve been stuck at that spot for hours?

Hi I was starting the atlas part but I had a problem it says python imaging required and I don’t know what it is (I use Mac) and I have a quest headset what do I do please help
i had this issue also and it was because i had installed blender from the windows store. once i used the installer directly from the blender website all i had to do was click install the Pillow button. might be the same if you installed blender from steam

Yeah I had the same problem Im pretty sure, try turning off the delete transparent meshes in vroid studios, yeah it does add more polygons to your avatar but it will probably fix the problem^^
@@evievrc thank you! but also when i converted my avatar to vrc the transparent parts showed up as black spots or areas on my avatar, do you know how to get rid of transparent areas in blender?..
@@onlyguy2 Sorry for the late reply, but yeah You can open the textures in paint 3d and retexture some areas and re apply the changes to your avatar, that should fix the transparency and black spots. So basically just color over the texture where you see the black spots appearing
My experience with this tutorial: At the fix model section I had to disable combine smae materials sin the settings just right to it so my eyes didnt disappear. And at the atles section I had to install something that disabled the plugins installed before, that confused me for a minute there.
What if I want to decimate the face of my model; will it still be able to have face expressions/animations? All this reducing polygons section made me realize I can actually make a low polygon version of my model by myself to give it the PS1 dimension feel.

As of now, dynamic bones work on quest, so you don't have to delete them anymore.

Try downloading from the zip that have their name on eg: "cats-blender-plugin-zip" rather than "Source code zip"

Try using version 2.1.11 of the VRM add on when importing the avatar. A recent update to the VRM addon seems to have broken it.

When I combined all of the materials it turns into a blob of one colour have I done something wrong
Same happened to me. Suddenly my avatar was one big blob of a shoe texture :///

For some reason it's coming up textureless when I export it from blender
Like when you export to unity? you have to make an assets folder titled Textures and save and apply and your textures will appear^-^

Hey Panda amazing tutorial as always! Personally i am fairly exsperianced with blender and have many hours in photoshop so am naturally quite pacient and ellimante and test problems until somthing works. However I only have just now stupidly seen that you should use the older VRM Addon and it has vixed my issues, I think this may be the main cause for most negative comments. i cant for the life of me get it to work the combener just wont work
Was anyone experiencing an issue with Blender when exporting? I get a "Eyes not named 'Body'" error, and I'm not too sure how to fix it >.
Maybe next to the fix click the wrench
And deselect keep upper chest

great video! although for me the mirror mode doesn't work, and the material combiner keeps generating problems, basicly it does all the textures wrong within the atlas

when i export it to unity it says there are no textures to add to the model? i dont know what to do
i tried atlasing the close together and then everything else together but my avatar turns white.
I tried that materials thing with the atlas btw and it just straight up broke my avatar. I believed you when you said it would look normal in unity, it didn't... I had to come back here and re-blend my avatar from scratch, luckily I had only made a few minor changes in blender in the first place.

@@karma3574 First I made my avatar with 11 materials as I thought I had no choice, but then when I realized my avatar was definitely a bit too tall (probably over 7 foot) I decided to go back through the process right after I finished choosing my avatar's appearance in VRoid. I noticed you could change the materials right there in the export menu, and instantly tried going to 2, I was amazed when it worked just fine. Definitely was tedious having to remember literally everything you said to do in this and the next episode, and I did have an unexpected problem I managed to fix before making a test build and calling it quits for the day when it was practically perfect.

When I combined materials my avatar looked gray and plaid with no color. Then when I moved into Unity, I was unable to extract textures. Any ideas how to fix this, I’ve been stuck at that spot for hours?

@@AbusingEgo I fix it for myself. I downloaded blender from steam and put version 2.93 in beta versions, after these actions there were no problems.

Something keeps going wrong with the Atlas. It just turns everything into a flat color and destroys the textures.
Try using version 2.1.11 of the VRM add on when importing the avatar. A recent update to the VRM addon seems to have broken it.

If anyone gets an Attribute error when using atlas, Uninstalling Pillow 10.0.0 and installing 9.0.0 made it work for me.

If you have that problem too then maybe try going to blender>file>External data>unpack all into files, and then pick the top one.

I don't know if anyone else had this issue, but when I pushed the fix model button, my eyes went white and I couldn't find a solution.
"To everyone having issues with the textures turning into one color (one texture) when create a material atlas (in Blender), try using the same version of the VRM Add On that I use in this video (2.1.11). OR before doing the atlas you can unpack the files by going to File > External Data > Unpack all files (Thanks tucker in the comments for finding this)."

i had this issue also and it was because i had installed blender from the windows store. once i used the installer directly from the blender website all i had to do was click install the Pillow button. might be the same if you installed blender from steam

Yeah I had the same problem Im pretty sure, try turning off the delete transparent meshes in vroid studios, yeah it does add more polygons to your avatar but it will probably fix the problem^^
@@evievrc thank you! but also when i converted my avatar to vrc the transparent parts showed up as black spots or areas on my avatar, do you know how to get rid of transparent areas in blender?..
@@onlyguy2 Sorry for the late reply, but yeah You can open the textures in paint 3d and retexture some areas and re apply the changes to your avatar, that should fix the transparency and black spots. So basically just color over the texture where you see the black spots appearing
My experience with this tutorial: At the fix model section I had to disable combine smae materials sin the settings just right to it so my eyes didnt disappear. And at the atles section I had to install something that disabled the plugins installed before, that confused me for a minute there.
What if I want to decimate the face of my model; will it still be able to have face expressions/animations? All this reducing polygons section made me realize I can actually make a low polygon version of my model by myself to give it the PS1 dimension feel.
