What I find interesting about this band of his, Banda Nova, is that some of them are relatives : Tom Jobim, wife Ana Jobim, daughter Elisabeth Jobim and son Paulo Jobim. There were also two couples in the band: Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum and Simone and Danilo Caymmi (son of Dorival Caymmi who was as important as Tom Jobim to Brazilian music). Tom used to say his band was a huge family.

This song has a direct connection with a Brazilian literature novel by "Jorge Amado", with the title "Gabriela clove and cinnamon". The book portrays the love story between Gabriela and the Arab Nacib, against the backdrop of Brazil in the 1920s and the prosperous period of cocoa production in the state of Bahia. The plot portrays romance, a little history of Brazil and the society of the time. It's wonderful!
"Saudade" is a tricky one, its a substantive for the feeling of missing someone. Its not the action, like in english "to miss". It´s very nostalgic and sad indeed but also strong and warm, it´s a word that embodies the feeling of being away from your loved ones/birth place. But it´s a feeling that keep you holding on, it´s not a "sad" word. For instance "I have so much saudade from being able to go out on the streets unbothered."
