    Actually, here in Russia i have an unlimited data plan for a smartphone. The thing is - not only does provider scan TTL, but they also check which ips packets are directed to. They check for stuff like steam, windows updates, etc.
    That's why i have to use either hosts file or vpn/proxies.
    Still worth it for $5.

      Because it is more complex. It's too complex to put in a post, but here is some. . The UE registers on the network, there are checks an challenges in the setup that have to do with the imei, timsi, and gutti. There is a configuration message sent by the UE that tells the system what catagory of device it is, and capabilities. That way the EnodeB knows how many mimo layers to use, or what other channels can be included in carrier aggrigation, including the 5g layer (yup, 5G is simply a aggrigation layer) . There are many other things like drx sleep time to save battery life, ect. Your phone will have many radio bearers established in a so called context. Where voice may go on a high priority Qci1 bearer, data goes on a best effort QCI5 bearer. Throttled data, and depending on the setup, tethered data, goes on a QCI8-9 bearer, and is handled every x cycles of the scheduler. If the load is small, it shouldn't make a difference, but the load is never small. Every second the phone and system send layer 2 messages by the hundreds. Everything is known. Who you are, where you are, how fast you are going, what sites you look at, where you shop, and what you masterbate to. A fool living in his van isn't going to get past it.

    I find this interesting as I have used unlimited data for a few years while traveling and working, but my plan would not allow hotspot or tethering. Recently I have found that if all of the traffic is encrypted through your favorite VPN the service provider will not be able to read the TTL, or otherwise... If you VPN from your phone with absolutely all traffic encrypted and then tether it should work with no issues. This isn't a difficult fix and doesn't require much tech savvy.

    TTL decrements at each hop or is timestamp-based depending on implementation, not a loop.
    As per wikipedia:
    Time to live (TTL) or hop limit is a mechanism that limits the lifespan or lifetime of data in a computer or network. TTL may be implemented as a counter or timestamp attached to or embedded in the data. Once the prescribed event count or timespan has elapsed, data is discarded or revalidated.

      I have a Huawei E5770 with modified firmware that includes a hidden menu on the built in display, I can change it to random IMEIs that are commonly assigned to Android and Windows phones, that has worked in the past, though I now have a sim that allows upto 80GB before throttling, but it's a good feature.
      Other firmware enhancements include:
      Changing TTL on the fly (like this vid demonstrates, but a quick 3-button press away),
      "Anticensorship" mode (Basically a configurable VPN, to be configured over telnet tho),
      DNS over TLS (Haven't had a play, not sure what use I have for this yet...),
      WiFi extender mode (So if near a WiFi hotspot, it can hop over and use WiFi data instead),
      Also, things like changing USB modes, enabling/disabling telnet and ADB-emulation, DD-WRT package support, custom web interfaces, etc.....
      Ya have to find the firmware on some dodgy Russian site as a basis and use their firmware as a base install, then make modifications to the firmware, repack and apply (In case of Russian spyware OFC, but I doubt they would after going through this much effort to make a pocket router into a powerful micro-pineapple so to speak)

    Hey Glytch. Dunno if you are still looking at the comments in this video so I hope you see this. I found a rather cheap grandfathered ATT data plan that works wonders for me when I am on the go.
    Back in 2010 for a limited time AT&T offered new iPad users with the 3G option an unlimited data plan for $30 a month. Some time back I came across these accounts being sold on eBay for like $10 an account. I bit the bullet and purchased one. Been worth it ever since. The reason I suggest this is because the seller was already fixing the IMEI issue that these iPad only plans have by making sure the registered IMEI is from a dead cellular enabled iPad. I have a OnePlus phone and use that data plan as my second sim for unlimited data on the go and unlimited hot spot sharing. Only restrictions are battery and cell strength. IF you are looking for a fairly affordable data plan, try checking those accounts out. Price was raised to $35 but still within range of a budget.

      @@NicholasSouris Hahahaha I cannot argue with your first sentence -- that seems to be fully factual!
      The second, I choose not to follow. Glytch clearly states that he's not an expert in everything. Becoming an expert and becoming trusted in a field or with a group means pronouncing things correctly and understanding them fully.
      TTL can be a value of 0 to 255, and is set at the time the packet is sent onto the network. Each hop decrements the TTL value on that packet, and once it reaches 0, it is discarded by the router that decrements it from 1 to 0, based on various RFCs. It is up to the network device manufacturer to follow the RFCs, and sometimes someone will decrement and forward a packet with a TTL of 1 rather than drop it as the RFC defines.
      Many operating systems have a different default TTL. What I could find on the web (unverified by me):
      Linux kernel 2.4 (circa 2001): 255 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      Linux kernel 4.10 (2015): 64 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      Windows XP (2001): 128 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      Windows 10 (2015): 128 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      Windows Server 2008: 128 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      Windows Server 2019 (2018): 128 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      MacOS (2001): 64 for TCP, UDP and ICMP
      I did confirm that on my MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 that the TTL is indeed still defaulting to 64:
      *iMac : ~ --> sudo sysctl net.inet.ip.ttl*
      *net.inet.ip.ttl: 64*
      Setting it to an arbitrary 66 seems like an odd way to "allow" packets through, but also a way to use the RFC standard packets to communicate something to the network. Since the LTE Modem will first talk to the receiving LTE tower controlled by the carrier, an unlikely TTL value of 66 allows the carrier to control those packets differently than a standard packet, such as 128, 64 or 255.
      When my computer sends a packet to my home router, the packet has a TTL of 64. When it leaves my router and is sent to my carrier, it has a TTL of 63. Then the first carrier router will get the packet, decrement the TTL to 62, and pass it on. Switches will pass the packet but not modify it.
      If a routing loop occurs, the TTL will soon reach 1 and then the packet will be dropped rather than causing an Infinite routing loop with a packet that will go nowhere forever. It's self-terminating! It's pretty awesome.

    can you explain for a lamens pleb why you would need this, I understood they are id'ing you on your phone via the TTL but I don't understand why they would limit you in this way, maybe because we don't have unlimited data plans in Canada. In essence, are you popping a cell phone sim card with unlimited data into a combo modem/router and tricking the ISP into thinking it's actually in a phone and not the hotspot combo device? I wonder why they block devices like that though to begin with

    • @FreeStyleSloth
      @FreeStyleSloth 3 года назад +2

      This is my understanding of it. His phone plan gives him unlimited internet for his phone ONLY. If he were to hotspot his laptop as an example, it would be speed-capped as to prevent such a thing from happening. By doing the above method, when the data gets passed through the phone the ISP thinks the data is coming through his phone rather than through a hotspotted device. This gives him a faster speed.

      it's not id'ing the phone through the ttl, it's more like 'if ttl=63, then apply rate limit, else, do nothing'; through that command, he's setting the ttl to 66, so, when the time comes to check, it's not equal to 63, so the rate limit isn't applied

    I’ve been wondering if the Raspberry PI could be made into a decent travel router with a WiFi dongle. Especially if you can get it to share a Hotel WiFi captive portal.

    • @JonathanGray89
      @JonathanGray89 3 года назад +4

      My first rpi was a kit meant for usage as a wireless router, came with the dongle and everything. I used it for other purposes but yeah. You can even get things less expensive than the pi to do the job just fine. I have a rock64 currently providing routing access between my VPN and LAN (using NAT to share the rock64's private IP with my VPN) along with acting as my personal NAS and email server (traffic being selectively forwarded through the VPN). You can do quite a bit with those things.

      Yes!

    • @auto117666
      @auto117666 3 года назад +1

      I’ve seen implementations where it goes from a wired to wireless network, but I have always had issues with travel routers getting past a captive portal where you would share out the wireless network to all of your devices (wireless to wireless or bridge mode).
      Getting the networking to work as an access point is easy enough, but it’s the authentication and easy setup for WiFi selection is the main issue for me.
      I had been thinking of creating a simple webapp in python which would allow a user to select a network and select it (limited sudo access). After connecting, test if a captive portal was detected, it would forward you to that page or show it within a simple IFRAME to enter hotel info or click yes.
      OK, after typing all that out, I think I could probably save myself some headaches and code time by simply authenticating with my phone or laptop then just cloning my MAC address to the travel router/RPI. :)

    It's Time to Live (as in, I'm going to live over there or he is likely going to live until he is 72), not live (as in that is a live wire). Soft I. It's a measure of how long the packet will live (soft I) on the network. That packet is going to live on the network for 64 hops.

    Please clarify for the people that over think everything. This method doesn't give you unlimited data just says the traffic is coming from a 65 phone rather then a 64 hot spot? Unlimited data is still through the provider and can't be hacked? My unlimited data plan throttles after 5 gigs(not true unlimited). Will it give me more then 5g of data or just allow me to tether and share the connection?

      You most likely don’t want a raspberry pi as your router since it’s slow AF when it comes to networking, but as Glytch mentioned, there are some nice LTE hotspots that support iptables in the firmware.
      Google dd-wrt (that’s a custom firmware you can burn onto lots of different WiFi hotspots).
      Iptables itself is a whole rabbit hole but basically it’s a kernel based set of networking rules and there’s a LOT of different stuff you can do with your networking packets.
      I dismissed the raspberry pi in the beginning of my rant but if you’re just wanting to dip your beak into Linux firewalling then it’s a cheap way of getting started. But you gotta build from the ground up with that one and it has a lot of quirks and weird limitations.

    • @davidg4512
      @davidg4512 3 года назад

      @@KarryKarryKarry with 8 megabits connection, the pi is fast enough lol. I actually run dd-wrt alongside my pi which does everything else, except NAT/Gatway. For some reason, I couldn't get TTL modification working on my dd-wrt but had no problems on the pi, thus I just left it that way instead of spending more time trying to get it to work.
