      No. I like the MoFi as well but a lot of the benefits of the MoFi are in this one... The most important thing is to get the support for the right channels, external antennas and both of these radios have that. You could always get both and return the one of your choice. That way you get to choose with both in hand.

    The problem with VPNs (that most people do not realize) is that your traffic exits to the internet AT the VPN provider's location, where, lots of hackers hang out. Think about it ... VPN .. hackers .. go hand in hand. If they wanted to, they could snoop on your traffic over at the VPN server. So I do not recommend using a VPN for "security". It is a misconception. All you need is a SSL connection (the lock symbol on your browser's address bar). This establishes a true end-to-end secure connection the bank/etc.

    • @PeterC408
      @PeterC408  3 года назад +1

      Have you been to a secure co-location server center? I have been to a couple. There is no wondering around. One even had armed guards that were there to protect the sensitive data their customers were gathering.

    • @rizwanarasheed
      @rizwanarasheed 3 года назад +2

      @@PeterC408 Hi Peter - I was not clear when I said "hackers hang out". I meant that they themselves are also using the same VPN provider as you and as such THEY themselves are on the same network as you are when you're connected to the VPN and thus they can snort the traffic where your VPN IP address is, over at the 'datacenter'. So they do not need to be physically present at the VPN server -- they would be connected, just like you or anyone, and monitor the traffic at the VPN IP address level.
      Some VPNs also NAT VPN clients through the same public IP address.
      By the way, thanks for all your videos.

    Thanks for sharing! Just bought one of these for a van build. Two questions. Can the repeater mode be automatic? Meaning if I roll up to a public WiFi can I use that to bypass my 4G data automatically or is it a manual process each time? This might be a dumb one because I suppose you can just use the repeater but does the tethering work over WiFi?

    • @PeterC408

      Interesting... can you get it to default to WiFi repeater mode and automatically switch to 4G if not available. I know that it will reconnect to wifi (xfinity public) for example but will it switch back and forth automatically? Not sure - I would have to try that. I would bet that it can failover but perhaps automatic fail back might require small intervention via the web interface. Great product. Still very impressed with this.

    • @PeterC408
      @PeterC408  10 месяцев назад

      TTL is just a packet value, time to live, that will enable a packet to die instead of bouncing around aimlessly forever. Back in the day, it was creatively utilized by some providers to identify phone traffic instead of hotspot or devices. That "trick" has evolved but so has the market. We can now have many wonderful and unlimited options like TMHI. The cat and mouse game of trying to out smart big telco has run its course and the reasons for doing so are disappearing. Why not just get an unlimited TMHI gateway for $50-40/mo and just move on?

      pasted from another response "In the cat and mouse game of trying to get more internet than you are paying for, TTL has gained a lot of attention. Some telco providers are using a Time to Live value for phone traffic, so that they can treat it differently than internet. Some people have claimed that they can fool the big Telcos into thinking that their internet traffic originated from a phone, but I know of no one that has gotten away with it.... that said, even if we did, it would be short lived. Do you have a client rep you ask , a special number to call , or how can I get quick and reliable results here ? What is the proper way to request a new client rep ? Failover is a feature of some of these routers... It uses a "watchdog timer" to regularly check for a response from a known entity... if this fails, it looks to switch. If you want this feature there are some very good choices out there but you need to look specifically for this feature. I did a video on it but few seemed to care. Now, this will provide great failover, just not automatic.

      Lots of people are trying to use phone plans in routers. Some of these have phone applications that register the phone IMEI to the SIM. It seems easier to get a hotspot data plan (although maybe not as inexpensive). Setting TTL is an older trick. Now they are using phone apps to bind phones to phone plans. I am not sure about Metro PCS. Not registering means that it could not get on the network (APN) did you set the APN to fast.metropcs.com

Some people have claimed that they can fool the big Telcos into thinking that their internet traffic originated from a phone, but I know of no one that has gotten away with it.... that said, even if we did, it would be short lived. Visable service tries to bind itself to a phone to make sure that it is not supporting WiFi hotspot users. Hotspot users, like us, are generally considered undesirables; we place a tremendous and constant demand on the network. Companies like Visable, Mint, Metro PCS, Consumer Cellular do not own their networks but instead purchase excess bandwidth from the network owners. If you want to run a hotspot, going to the source should be your best bet. AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile are the ones that own the networks. Those should recognize straight away. It is interesting to know that Visable worked after removing and re-inserting the SIM. I would have thought that they would have locked to that phones IMEI number upon registration in their app. You would not have to do this if you had T-Mobile for example. They have a hot spot plan for 100GB of data for $50/mo. How much data do you use?

      If you have an old AT&T account for your iPad, the answer is surprisingly Yes. My cousin had an old iPad and I put it in a radio for him. He has been watching non-stop for 4 months now without no issues.

    which CAT is this device?

    • @PeterC408
      @PeterC408  2 года назад

      CAT is a term used on ethernet cables and it is short for Category. This box doesn't really care what ethernet cable you plug into it, but I bet you mean will it take full advantage of CAT 5e or CAT 6. Look, the speeds you are probably looking to replicate are less than 100Mbps, so you don't care. It will give you wireless (WiFi) speeds above that but for cabled devices, you would be limited to 100Mbps. Don't let that slow you down... this is a super great device that only 3 out of 5 will appreciate or understand. 😮😎

      A very good question. Try plugging a wired connection into your phone or trying using a public wifi as your own. With this thing, I could go to a Starbucks and setup my Alexa (wired or wirelessly and encrypting all my traffic with a built-in vpn). That's the difference, oh and I can support more clients.

      I am not paid for my opinion but let me tell you that this company creates some of the most well made and innovative devices I have seen in years. Get one and make your own decision. There are a lot of people out there that do not know how to use technology.... but IMHO this device is a very creative and an incredibly useful device. Using this device, I can pick up a public internet that totally unprotected, create my own network with a firewall and even implement OpenVPN .... On the device!!!! I can then share it with dozens of devices. I just made Starbucks and McDonalds free networks, safe enough to trade stocks or buy bitcoin!!! 3 out of 5 people? Some people are just dumb.... look at the uptake on free vaccines, it is also about 3 out of 5.

      This looks like it might be worth taking a look at. MOFI had a great product but kind of ruined their reputation by cost reducing the 4500 and really making it vastly inferior to its once glorious self .... and then they made it worse by standing behind the change poorly. We'll see.
